Chapter 39: Beast Blood
Even during the deepest of nights the entire city was lit like a Christmas tree.
Burning candles, oil lampposts and torches illuminated every step of the way in the noble District, allowing for rather safe travel during the night.
Makoto was currently deep in thought.
Naturally he had accepted the quest, he wanted to finish things with the Blood Moon Cult once and for all but there was one little problem with that.
He didn't know how long he would have to do this and there was his lover after all.
It would be unfair to leave her at the Inn for days, just because he had to take care of something.
If she was a player he could let her get in touch with Lilliana and Sanja and hunt in the Labyrinth but because she was an NPC that complicated things in that regard quite a bit.
Unwilling to leave her without anything left to do he made up his mind and entered the Inn.
Saracesse was currently sitting on a chair and staring out of the window when she heard him enter.
Seeing the immediate change in her face from gloomy to happy as she jumped into his arms nearly broke his heart, as he knew there would be bad news to his arrival.
After finally getting her to calm down and sitting together with her on the double bed, he started to explain.
"Listen Saracesse...
I have to go away for a bit because of a Quest that I got.
Remember how I was able to put Rhobos Grandel in Jail? Well I think I never told you that it came with a price and that price was a favor, one that has to be repaid no matter what.
To put it bluntly, I am going to expose the houses that supported the Blood Moon Cult in the shadows, not only because I was asked to do it but because I want to take care of this.
I know it is not fair to ask you to wait here until I am back so I thought of something.
If you were able to form a party with Lilliana you should be able to get stronger in the Labyrinth too.
Your level is not appropriate for the first floor anyways so you should go hunting alone in a deeper floor of the Labyrinth till I am back, just come back occasionally to the Inn if you need to sleep.
I probably won't be back for a few days so don't despair, I promise that I will hurry as much as I can to get back to you."
She remained silent for quite a while after he finished, just staring into his eyes for many minutes until finally letting out a long sigh.
"You really like to keep your girlfriend waiting don't you?"
Feeling a sting deep in his gut from her words, Makoto lowered his head in guilt.
"I am sorry..."
After lifting his head again he saw the smile on her face before it disappeared again.
"I am guessing you also have to go now?"
Nodding his head in even more guilt after confirming that he had to log out for some sleep, he could see how her mood dropped by another notch.

"Well if you have to go, go. I don't blame you and I know it's not because you want to."
Avoiding eye contact she turned away and was about to walk away when he put his arms around her from behind to pull her into a tight hug.
Deep down inside, Saracesse might understand but that didn't mean she wasn't saddened by it so all he could respond with was this intimate but heartfelt hug.
She turned towards him with a soft gaze and her head slowly inched closer to him, responding the same way he exchanged a long and intense kiss with her, exploring every nook and cranny of her mouth with his tongue before slowly stepping away.
"Don't you dare keep me waiting for too long."
Saracesse whispered, her head kept low and he put a hand beneath her chin to lift it up so he could stare into her beautiful sapphire blue eyes.
"Never, my love."
Smiling at his words and aware that Makoto just called her 'My love' for the first time, she put her head into his shoulder and hugged him with back breaking strength.
"Mine..."
Was all Saracesse said.
Deeply touched by this display of affection with this one word, he also put his arms around her and kissed her head.
They stayed like this for a good bit until she let go of him and he logged out, leaving her behind with gut wrenching guilt.
.....
Sharon stepped out of her capsule, a little unstable on her feet after staying inside of it for such a long time but that quickly faded away.
With a few quick steps she reached her drawer, picked up the phone on top of it and searched through her contacts for the right number.
It only took a few seconds before her handler that monitored the ingame time she spent in Azalon picked up the phone.
"Hi Sharon, what's up?"
"Hey Markus, listen, I know of a way how you can repay me that favor you always talked about."
A short silence was audible on the other end of the line before the man responded again.
"Go on."
"Well I would need you to look into someone, more precisely, to look into someone from Azalon, I need his real name and Address."
"Sharon that is illegal in more than one way, if I do this I would be lucky to just get fired without getting into jail!"
"And without me you would never have been introduced to your wife and your children would never have been born so what will it be, yes or no?"
Anxiously waiting for his response, Sharon crossed her fingers, hoping for the right answer.
"...Alright, fine.
I will contact you as soon as I know more, what is his ingame ID?"
"Makoto, M-A-K-O-T-O."
"Ok..."
Grinning from one ear to the other while holding her phone, she tried to cheer him up a bit.
"Don't be like that Markus. It's going to be alright.
Tell my sister that I said hi and that I will visit you guys soon, I hope you make some more of that amazing pork again, it just tastes godly.
Alright, talk to you later!"
Ending the call, still with an incredibly bright smile on her face she looked at her capsule, her heart rate increasing right away.
Sharon knew that she was deeply in love with Makoto at this point, her feelings had grown so strong that every time she logged out she had this incredibly longing feeling towards him.

They had to meet in Real Life, no matter the cost.
She had to see him with her own eyes.
Holding one hand against her chest, her cheeks reddened just thinking about what they could be doing if everything went well with explaining that she was the real Saracesse...
Biting her lip with her chest tightening once more she stumbled to her bed.
.....
It was Friday.
The last day before the weekend.
Incredibly bored and only listening with one ear to what the Instructor was saying, Makoto's mind wandered off to a distant place.
He was back inside Azalon, fighting mobs, kissing Saracesse and letting his desires take over.
Back in a place where he belonged.
He only noticed a familiar figure standing outside of his College after many minutes.
The same calm demeanor, stature and visible muscles.
Veronica's boyfriend was waiting outside, presumably for her.
Seeing him standing there lit a fire in his heart again, but not the good kind.
Dark emotions surged through him, hatred and disgust spinning in an endless spiral.
After a minute or so something else entered that mix after staring at his back for a good while, sympathy.
It extinguished his hatred and disgust and instead he only felt sorry for the guy.
He was unaware of how his girlfriend behaved behind his back, how she played around with other guys, possibly even getting intimate with them while he was kind enough to wait for her outside of College, 25 minutes before the Course even ended.
Just from this one simple fact that he was waiting patiently outside for his girlfriend like that, Makoto thought that he couldn't be a bad guy,
It was deep sympathy that he was feeling for this fool right now.
The same fool that he had been not too long ago.
A sudden determination entered his mind, with one hand raised he excused himself for a 'Toilet Break' and took the elevator down.
It just wasn't fair to leave him like this, unaware about what was going on behind his back.
Makoto would make sure that he at least knew the situation, he would tell him the truth.
Maybe a simple warning could save him from the same despair and anger that he felt after discovering her real nature.
With a gust of wind to welcome him, Makoto stepped outside.
Immediately the waiting giant turned around, clearly surprised to seeing him standing there.
"Hey, aren't you that friend of Veronica's?"
It was good that the guy recognized him, it made everything a lot easier.
"Yeah, or at least I was.
My name is Makoto btw."
Shaking hands with the big guy he soon enough got a response.
"Steve, nice to meet you."
"Likewise, listen I have to tell you that you should watch out for her, she already broke my heart by leading me on for quite some time.
I don't know why she does it, maybe it gives her some kind of kick but she flirted with me to the point where I thought for sure that she felt the same thing that I was feeling for her.
You seem like a good guy so I wanted to give you a fair chance with this."
Noticing that Steve's expression changed with every word that he spoke from a friendly smile to rage, he took a step back.
"Why would you even say something like to about her? Are you jealous or something? Fuck off dude, you don't bash another man's girl."
Clearly angry, Makoto tried his best to calm the guy down so he could explain.
"No you are misunderstanding this.
I just wanted to give you a warning because I couldn't believe it myself, it only seemed fair..."
It was clear as day that his words fell on deaf ears, they only helped to further enrage Steve.
In hindsight it had been a stupid idea, what proof did he have to convince him, how did he expect that anyone would believe him in the first place?
Makoto's actions had been driven by his emotions, more precisely, his deep sympathy towards Steve.
He knew all too well how it felt to find out how a person could really be and he wished for no one to ever experience the same fate.
It was naïve, thinking that anyone would listen to him when he slandered another's girl.
Unable to keep his anger in check anymore, a straight punch soon enough found Makoto's face.
No good deed goes unpunished...
That was all Makoto could think as he stumbled back, holding one hand against his bleeding nose.
Steve was about to swing again when he noticed how Makoto's eyes suddenly had a deep crimson red color, making him stop dead in his tracks.
Accompanied with a visible glow, the stare alone sent cold shivers down Steve's back.
Immediately his entire attitude changed from wanting to help the poor guy in front of him to seeing him as nothing more than an insect, one that had dared to hit him on top of that.
Killing intent was emanating from him and Steve quickly stepped away, noticing the acute danger.
Every trace of sympathy was blown away with that one punch and with an icy voice, Makoto spoke.
"You can think what you want really, I warned you.
Don't come back bawling your eyes out because you got stabbed in the back, for all I care you can drop dead in a ditch."
Completely stunned about this 180° twist in personality, Steve watched Makoto walk back inside, unable to even respond.
He tried his best to wipe away the blood that still trickled down his nose on the way back.
When he entered the room his Instructor was about to ask where exactly he had been for all this time but the words just wouldn't leave her mouth.
One quick glance from his red eyes was enough to completely shut her up as he walked back to his seat .
Quite a few others noticed his changed behavior and eye color, sending more than one chill down many spines.
Makoto continued to stare outside the window as if nothing had happened, creating the illusion that he never really left the room.
In his own reflection he could clearly see the red glow from his eyes and a sinister smile appeared on his face as he looked outside.
He was aware of the change.
The Beast and his own personality had started to merge for quite some time now and he welcomed it.
Every time he felt it run rampant inside of him he had no fear, no worry or sorrow.
It was the only time that he truly felt free and no one would be able to take that away from him now...
