《Cloud Dungeon》Book 2 Chapter 12

Due to the lack of proper conditions for evolution, sky sharkman pirates have become extinct from the dungeon unless specific conditions are achieved. They are now regarded as an extinct race and an extinct bloodline.

Due to improper conditions for evolution, the sky sharkman race are in danger of extinction, beware or you shall lose this monster race.

As Dia woke up, these two screens appeared and after almost five minutes of slow reading she finally understood the messages that contained quite a few hard terms.

“Shark… shark…” She thought slowly as she tried to remember what was the sky sharkman race until the dungeon system realized her desire and the mental image appeared as well as bringing up a mental map of the entire dungeon showing where every last figure was.

“Ah! The ugly thingy that Waid made!” She exclaimed.

Remembering the creature that had killed her cute seafolk boy and seeing them in such a hard time to the point of almost vanishing. She was actually a bit happy and was thinking about how to make the little shark seafolk.

She did realize that they were very weak though and might only be able to live in the first floor. The conditions to evolve into seafolk are somewhat high, blade wing flying fish aren’t able to survive against the adult sky sharks in the fourth floor.

Sky sharks have a very particular growth pattern. When an adult is going to give birth, they go as far down as the first floor, even though they would grow weaker as they do that, and release their young before going back up.

Sky Shark infants all exist in the first floor, they are abundant and are hunted in large number. In floor 2, sky shark infants still exist but they are much older and bigger. They are some of the few that helped capture the wyverns showing their strength in numbers. Because of the low amount of food, the sky sharks at this age become territorial and aggressive with each other. Besides eating whatever they can get falling into the water or passing above it, they also cannibalize but they are still not fast enough to catch blade wing flying fish.

On the third floor they are finally adults but still slower than the flying fish. However, that changes on the fourth floor. Sky sharks, due to the feather scales having developed for a long time and evolving fins that are very long, have feathers that allow flight just like birds and they gain a similar gliding ability as flying fish. However, what is different from the fish is that they developed an innate wind magic which reduces air resistance allowing them to increase speed drastically in the air. Thus, from the third floor up, the seas are scarce of blade wing flying fish.

The only thing the sky sharks don’t attack are island turtles because these creatures’ shells are so hard that even the sharks’ powerful jaws aren’t able to break it. There are two types of sky island turtles which are Cloud Island and Land Island Turtles. Both are very powerful defensively in their own ways where one is bouncy while the other is hard. What is more is that both turtles have spirits living on them so they are also protected by their residents.

At this time, Waid suddenly appeared in the air out of nowhere frowning, “What is up with this message about my race going extinct?!” He asked frowning at Dia.

She shrugged, “I just woke up, what happened?” She asked getting up and walking out of her room to call Misty about it, showing the still hanging messages.

“It seems someone attacked the sharkmen.” Misty said. “I wasn’t paying attention so it mi… Ah! I know now!” Misty said. “Earlier the snow elves were running around looking for an island to make a farm on but no one would let them so I just said to take one by force. Seems they got rid of the sharkmen for their island since it was being used poorly.” she explained.

Waid’s face was burning, “Why did you push them on my monster!?” he shouted.

“I didn’t say it for any particular reason. Well the fact that it was the emptiest island did help in the decision, but I could have pointed them to any island like a goblin pirate island. However, they still have a rather good thing going and even make good berry rum.” Misty said.

Waid was bright red while pouting but suddenly the two dungeons felt a large pain in their heads.

The third floor boss has been attacked outside of the dungeon island by other dungeon monsters. A pack of sky sharkmen have challenged the blade wing flying fish swarm for rule as dungeon boss.

“W-what?!” Misty exclaimed. “Waid call Mir, Dia we need to go down quick!” Misty said.

The two were having a lot of pain in their head for some reason.

The reason was that the dungeon boss was connected more strongly compared to the other monsters of the dungeon. When hunted and killed outside of the dungeon instance area, it causes the direct mental link to be severed creating a lot of mental stress on both of them.

On the third floor, in the cloud sea that was bubbling with foam, a frenzy happening. The adolescent sharkmen already matched the 50% strength of the leader and each of them had a strange coral-like spear. Around them was a swarm of common third floor blade wing flying fish.

HISS!

They hissed and swung their spears and no matter where they swing, they would hit a fish in the swarm.

The reason why these are counted as a boss is because of Dia’s idea which allowed one of the fish to control the swarm through mass mentality. Even if that leader dies, another takes command until there are no fish left in the instance and in the actual swarm outside. Even so, death was a very distracting thing for them.

With the sharkmen’s jaws, spears and claws as well as their superior speed coming from the fourth floor which matched the speed of these fish, since strength and speed are different, they were able to avoid and attack the swarm.

The swarm had around 100 individuals and shockingly, the eight sharkmen have already killed half of them while their naturally strong feather scales and muscles were only ruffled and some thin scars formed.

Similar to speed, defensive power isn’t affected by the floor so only if careless would a fifth floor monster without a monster core die in the first floor.

ROAR!

The leader roared and suddenly his body doubled in size while his feathers turned red in color.

It suddenly swung its coral spear and suddenly a huge wave of mana burst out sweeping through more than a dozen fish and chopping them in half before sending them flying.

This was an innate sky sharkman ability that only adult sky sharkmen can use which is called berserk burst.

It is a single mana infused attack, but sky sharkmen use a burst of mana to rush suddenly with almost triple their current power.

This attack leaves them weakened though but with so many corpses around him, the eyes of the adult sharkman turned red as he began to eat and eat and eat. Like an insatiable shark, it ate the living fish and dead ones. Then with the other sharkmen, he finally caught the last fish.

At that time, Dia and the others finally arrived and found the bloody spot on the cloud sea.

“Stop!” Misty shouted but the shark opened its maw, bit the head and ate it.

The third floor dungeon boss has been completely killed, floor instability detected.

The sharkman pack has succeeded in killing the boss. The eldest sharkman has accumulated a large amount of mana and shall become the new boss. Monsters shall proceed to the boss island for the dungeon to evolve it into a proper dungeon boss.

The sharkman race is a fourth floor monster, as such their power is restricted in the third floor. Their race has to be weakened until it matches the floors strength limit. The entire race must be evolved to match the third floor power level.

“AHHH!” “ARGAH!” Dia and Waid cried as they gripped their heads, feeling as if their brains were being dug out with a spoon.

They even lost control of their levitation and had to have Mir spread branches from her arm to catch them.

Veins appeared on the heads of the two children as they cried in pain for almost 10 minutes until the mental damage and ‘physical’ damage to the dungeon vanished. This was a very clear danger that Dia’s kind of dungeon had. Unless the boss was made to live on the dungeon boss island, they would roam too far.

As the two got over the pain, they felt very weak.

“What happened?” Mir asked Misty.

“The connection of the dungeon boss is almost five times stronger than the previous kinds of dungeons. If one dies off by being killed like this then it would cause a huge mental burden along with soul wrenching pain. Since they don’t even have a solid body, the stress went directly to the soul. When Dia finally finishes forming a solid body, the pain will weaken with time as her body gets stronger and stronger." Misty said.

Mir scowled when she heard that not understanding why such a thing was actually done.

After the pain faded it took around 20 minutes for the children to regain their ability to move and think, following which they started crying due to the pain.

Pearl had felt the pain that Waid was feeling and appeared soon after becoming his crying shoulder until they finally calmed down.

“Alright, we need to make the new boss, this can’t be delayed." Mir said.

Dia sniffed but nodded and they went to the third floor main island where the beanstalk was made. The sharkmen were already on the island looking around the beanstalk and roaring while running after the animals and spirits.

“Stop hurting them!” Dia shouted causing the bodies of the few remaining sharkmen to tense.

Tears welled up and she called the leader so that she can change him. Waid joined her so that they both could make him.

They both appeared in the creature creation space and had the boss there. The current sharkman was like what Waid had created but rapidly the form began to straighten like the pirate variants. Suddenly the physical strength began to drop and the 3 meter tall figure began to shrink until it was 2 meters tall.

At that time, the figure that was hunched began to straighten while the long tail that reached the ground began to shrink. The finlike legs became human legs with ten toes that had webbing in between them and the hands formed five fingered hands with webbing there as well. Veins also gathered from the torso all the way to the head.

The muscles began to grow smoother and like a human’s. The neck that was as wide as the torso began to shrink. The boss seemed to be in pain as the neck shrank to human size taking the head as well. Human shaped shoulders formed and the head structure began to change.

The large black eyes changed to human eyes and were pulled forward while the round head began to shrink and the large nose shrank into the front of the face forming the nose. Slowly black hair began to grow while the mouth began to close and form a human sized one but the fangs didn’t vanish. Finally the sharkman took a perfect human form. The physical strength decreased to 75% of the original strength that belonged to sharkmen but the mental power drastically increased. It was able to speak in human language and to rationalize but its power wasn’t like before. The last change she made was remove the territorialism and aggressiveness towards spirits and other animals.

“They are like the seafolk you made before." Waid said.

“Yeah, I combined it.” Dia said, “They are Seafolk (Sky Shark Variant)” Dia said.

“He isn’t much of a boss.” Waid said and moved his hand as the coral spear appeared. He grabbed it and poked it. The coral then became like iron and formed three sharp heads at the top. This was a strange iron weapon that he had spontaneously made by mixing the mana of the clouds of the dungeon with iron. It was called a sky iron trident. He gave it to the boss which caused a strong aura to come from it.

They nodded and left letting the sharkman evolve. Soon the dazed seafolk boss appeared and it looked at itself with coherent thought.

The third floor has re-stabilized and the new boss is the seafolk (sky shark variant).

Seafolk will now appear on the third floor.

Due to the evolution of the sky sharkman boss into a seafolk (sky shark variant) the sky sharkman race has completely evolved into seafolk. The sky sharkman race is now extinct. They are now regarded as an extinct race and an extinct bloodline.

Due to the boss of the third floor being much stronger than the previous boss, power recalibration has happened. Creatures living on the fourth and fifth floors have grown 20% stronger. Creatures living on the first, second and third floors have 20% more potential for growth.

“Eh?!” Waid exclaimed.

As he looked shocked, all the sharkmen began to roar and hiss as their bodies began to change drastically as they became seafolk. Four were female and three were male, along with the male boss made it that there were four of each sex.

They each had a spear but the spears weren’t made of the strange sky iron that Waid created. Contrary to their savage nature before, they were now much calmer as they examined their strange new bodies. The seafolk had tightly packed feathers as opposed to the wild feathers they had before. They still had their gills allowing them to live in the water and they didn’t seem too bad off on land either. Still, even with instinct, they stumbled as they stood upright and used the spears as canes to help them get used to it.

“What is wrong?” Mir asked as she flew over.

“MIR!” Misty shouted calling her over.

Mir read the screens and went a bit wide eyed but nodded, “I see, this makes sense. If a boss is stronger in a lower floor, the monsters above have to have more power to battle against the boss or they would blow through the next floor and abandon their post.” Mir said.

“Still, to think such a difference existed but… this 20% potential, won’t it make a big increase in power in the lower floors?” Misty asked.

“Wouldn’t that have happened when any boss evolved?” Mir asked.

“Wait, bosses can evolve?” Waid asked.

Do to the increase in potential, the boss bewitching lesser lily alraune has become a Bewitching Lily Alraune.

Due to the increase in the dungeon boss power, power recalibration has happened. Creatures living in all floors have grown 3% more powerful. Creatures living in the first floor have 3% more potential.

The second floor boss, Big Bad Wolf has evolved from a kobold (unique sub-race) into a Wolfman (Unique Sub-Race)

Due to the increase in the dungeon boss power, power recalibration has happened. Creatures living in the third, fourth and fifth floors have grown 10% more powerful. Creatures living in the first and second floors have 10% more potential.

Due to the increase in potential, the dire sky wolves living with the floor 2 boss and on the nearest islands have begun to evolve into Dire Sky Wolfmen

Following that, countless windows materialized showing many Lesser creatures evolving like the lesser thorn protector alraunen on the third floor becoming true thorn protector alraunen as well as several races gaining greater variants earlier on. Some weaker races from the fourth floor appeared on the third floor and it kept going like this.

As for the two bosses below, their increase of strength resulted in direct evolutions and a drastic increase in the entire dungeon’s overall strength by more than 30% higher. It was an amazing discovery that even Misty did not know since most of her knowledge was innate. So unless she spent months looking through everything, she would have to encounter the event to know about it but since she helps take care of Dia and the management of the dungeon, she doesn’t have that time.

At once, the dungeon became more dangerous and it did not go unnoticed.

In this world, the six sentient humanoid races have followed a strict level grading system before. This is both for sentient people and monsters who were both graded after long period of research and this obviously included dungeons.

To grade a dungeon though, it requires very extensive research that was done on Dia already.

Within the first floor entrance island, in one of the upper floors of the adventurer's guild built early on, was a young 30 year old looking male. The round ears showed how he was a human while he sat in meditation.

At this moment, while he was meditating without any movements, his eyes suddenly open then he frowned and stood up.

He walked to a strange sigil on the wall to his right and placed his hand causing the markings to shine. After a while, his face become dark as he left the room then headed to the guild master's office and knocked.

“Who is it?!” the voice from inside came.

“It’s Marcus." the man said.

“Come in!” the voice from inside said.

This man by the name of Marcus opened the door.

“Did something happen Sir Dungeoneer?” the guildmaster said very respectfully.

Dungeoneer is a unique profession. It’s the only one that can remotely understand a dungeon’s internal structure and this is done when they do a pass through the dungeon. Similar to the sigil in his own room, within the dungeon on each floor he spread around a significant number of these exact same ones all the way to the fifth floor. These sigils were able to absorb a trace of the dungeons mana and allow him to examine it on each floor.

By absorbing for 1 minute, the amount of mana the sigil absorbs as well its quality can be observed by these people. It is also these people that can shatter a dungeon core while safely preserving the soul inside.

“The danger level of the dungeon just drastically shot up." he said bluntly.

“Huh?!” The guildmaster said shocked, “What just happened exactly?” He asked confused.

“This is different from the time the dungeon formed its sixth floor and obtained structural stability, this time the five floors below became stronger. The quality of the mana on the first, second and third floors has had a drastic increase of 30%. In addition, there was an increase in mana quantity of almost 30% in the fourth and fifth floors. In an overall sense, the dungeon that was regarded as an E rank dungeon just went up to D rank." Marcus said.

The jaw of the guildmaster dropped when the detailed report came in. “What the hell just happened?” he asked in awe and fear.

“I do not have a deep understanding of the new dungeon system yet but from what I understand, the dungeon boss plays an important role in controlling the power balance of the dungeon’s entire structure like a key pillar in a large construction." Marcus said.

“So there was a dungeon boss switch or upgrade?” He asked.

“That is what I assume it to be, yes. Most of my identification magic doesn’t work well and I have been doing my own research into the cloud dungeon’s structure. Like myself, the sky dungeons that appeared all over are under watch by my colleagues. Come New Year’s, we shall gather our findings to spread research knowledge throughout the world from the dungeoneer guild.” He said.

The guildmaster scratched his head then took another report scroll and waved it to the dungeoneer. He took it, opened the scroll and began to read before his face showed an expression of shock.

“They plan to make a completely new system for the adventurers ranking?!” Marcus asked.

“They obviously have to take into account the fact that the sentient races have had a level cap increase to level 1000. The past few months countless nations have taken in children to train as knights and examine their level up rate from simply training. In three months of training, the children went from level 1 to level 25 just from the most basic strength, agility, dexterity and weapon training. This had previously been the growth rate of levels 1 to 10 so from what we can understand, levels 1-250 have the same ease as levels 1-100 that existed before. They are planning to set up a new ranking system once the information from monster tamers and dungeoneers come in. Most likely, this upgrade in power that you mentioned won’t cause the increase to D rank. From what I understand, they will add lesser and greater ranking such as F- and F+ in the future due to the level range increasing." the guild master said.

“This…” The dungeoneer said in shock. “Is there any estimates of the new F rank?” he asked.

“Yes, the previous F rank was to level 60 but now it will probably be level 100 but this is my guess and not official so don’t focus just on that.” he said.

Marcus nodded, “I understand, I will still put up a notice and send news to the floors above to warn the adventurers inside." Marcus said.

“Please do that.” the guild master said nodding.

The dungeoneer turned and left to head to the communication room to reach the safe zones entrance islands that the adventurers guild was slowly investing to build branches at. There they would concentrate the knowledge of monsters and floor items and give out quests for the people exploring the dungeon.

Soon, a large warning notice was put up next to the bulletin board that quests were put on but there was no way to tell the adventurers already in the dungeon run. Still, the spirits warned them as well making them withdraw for the time being.
