《Cloud Dungeon》Chapter 4

After spending so much time just flying, Dia became bored. Slowly she spent more time sleeping with few changes besides her clouds and island getting a bit bigger each day. Despite summoning some new wisps, she is still bored. Dia asked many times for Mir to teach her how to use magic, but it resulted in the flower in shaking her head and she just kept her roots planted into the ground.

All that time that passed has changed the flower though. Before she was at best 50 cm tall with a thin stem and roots, but now she explained that she was already growing and would soon reach prime condition to evolve. The leaves have formed small branches that work as arms. It just added a second limb to the leaf, but that did make it more versatile and made her more dexterous. The roots have slowly bulked up, the stem has grown and she grew two new thicker ones that wrapped around her original stem forming a small armor for her otherwise weak plant stem. The flower bud is bulkier as well.

Now she stands almost a meter tall. Her growth was attributed to the fact that Mir knows how to properly collect mana and how to distribute it through her body making it grow faster.

As for the garden, the trees were now rather tall, all the herbs lost the Lesser in their name becoming rarer herbs and branching out forming antidote herb and a few others that have naturally spread. The saplings have also grown to about 3 meters and now hide the dungeon core at the center. After extensive asking Dia even let Mir move into the circle near the dungeon core if she taught her magic and although she moved, Mir kept saying that there wasn’t enough mana for Dia to use resulting in her sulking.

The true reason she told Misty when Dia was out swimming in the clouds.

‘The girl is too young, if her mentality was a bit more mature I would have taught her by now, but she wants to make many things that would cause more trouble than it’s worth and the cost for most creatures would already be high. I am going to let her slowly grow the dungeon first and form a large pool of mana before teaching her how to make more advanced monsters. By that time, I will already be teaching her how to change the look of the monsters.’

Misty understood and agreed. A child with an unbelievable power isn’t a safe thing since it could give birth to many things that shouldn’t exist.

Now with Dia sleeping everything was calm but that didn’t last, as if crossing a barrier, the island shook and suddenly the air was filled with much thicker mana and everything in the dungeon spurred to life. Slowly the dungeon began to turn as seen when the sun’s position began to change and it began to move.

“What happened? What was that hard hit of tingly feeling!” Dia asked teary eyed.

“We must have hit a strong mana spring.” Misty said

At this time Mir began glowing as the branches on her body began to grow. Rapidly her meter tall body grew to 190 cm. The arm branches stretched out and formed two sections. The vines began to grow and wrap the chest giving her bulk and taking a semi humanoid form creating woman breasts. Then it moved on to the legs, formed thick vine like legs as if muscle without skin, arms, the pointy end was covered and the vines formed something like a hand but were more like five loose vines that would act like the fingers.

The flower bud also grew and finally split open revealing ugly fangs and a purple inner mouth before it quickly closed.

The thorn bush warrior flower has evolved into a Thorn Guardian.

Following this, many more messages began to appear as more plants began to evolve. Some of the magical trees began to shrink, but then rip their roots out and then the branches would split in two sections forming arms before a head formed and the bottom of the tree would split to form two legs with the roots split between each foot.

Some brown cap mushrooms were also now 50 cm tall and walking on stumpy legs with red with white dot mushroom caps. They were ugly and somehow cute at the same time because as they opened the mouth on the lower part of the stump that now had a face it kept squeaking like those rubber ducks kids play with in the bathroom.

Mir quickly walked over and wrote in front of Misty.

‘Quick! Have Dia stop the dungeon before it gets deeper or else the monsters will keep evolving at a faster rate!’

Quickly Misty moved and snapped Dia out of her fear of all the monsters and told her not to cry until she stopped the dungeon from moving or else more monsters will appear.

She held back her tears and shouted “No! NO NO NO! NO MO MONSHTA!!!!” She cried and instantly the dungeon stopped where it was.

The sudden stop didn’t affect the inside of the dungeon because of the dome protecting it and removing all forms of inertia.

With the dungeon stopping Dia burst into tears causing the entire dungeon to shake and unknowingly, her clouds began to release rain due to her crying as well.

For the next twenty minutes Misty kept comforting the little girl and slowly she tired herself out and fell asleep causing Misty to sigh before she turned to the island that was now with quite a few monsters.

“STOP AT ONCE!” Misty shouted not worried in the least in waking Dia.

Dungeons have a setting for hibernating and she was currently in such a state and wouldn’t wake up until time was up or unless something happened as shown when they entered the mana spring’s area of effect.

The monsters froze in place.

She looked at Mir.

“How do we handle this?” She asked.

‘To talk with the girl, I am in no condition with how I look at this point. If I could evolve once more I could become more presentable, but at this point I am a full monster. The girl currently has enough mana to make me a dungeon boss though and with that she can merge me with a few other dungeon creatures to make a new, more powerful creature. If she gets 2 of each wisp and merges them with me, I may become a Nature Guardian depending on how she makes me. If I get to humanoid it could take up all her mana and I would fail the transformation.’ Mir said.

“We have time before she wakes up, we can work on expanding right?” Misty asked.

The head of the flower shook.

‘With the current mana we will focus on evolving a few wisps so that they can greatly improve the dungeon. Gnomes and nixie are extremely important as well as sylphs. By making these three we can set them up to greatly improve the dungeons growth rate and they will take control of the wisps in our stead making them work much better.’

“How do we do that?”

‘Dungeon fairies have a small control of the dungeon. One of which is partial control of the monsters so you can have them do some things. Evolving is pushing it, but we have to stabilize the island that is flooding with mana.’

With a serious nod Misty flew out and called three earth wisps and had them fly in front of the dungeon core.

With her innate control of mana, Misty began to draw in some of the dungeon’s mana and began to order the wisps to merge and then thought of the gnomes.

The innate knowledge of the world brought an image of a short bulky bearded old man, but pulling up her short memories of earth and remembering the short pointy headed ones that stood as statues in the front lawn, she began to have them change into that form and slowly the essence of this world's gnomes filled the other mold. Soon the three wisps merged and lowered into the ground before the earth started to rise and take the shape of a garden gnome. Soon the earth crust burst and a moving 30 cm tall garden gnome fell on his butt.

“Aye me arse!” he shouted in pain and got up. “Ah this be a might fine lan.” He said and began to look around and frowned. “This be good lan but bit blan…” He muttered then put his fingers in between his lips and let out a resounding whistle and soon earth wisps began to rise out of the ground.

He pointed to nine of them and fiddled with his fingers and they began to rotate and slowly merge, drawing mana from the air itself and soon they shot into the earth and began to form more gnomes like the first, but with different faces and personalities. Finally they moved and started to shout orders to the wisps and kick the plant monsters out of the way and told them to plant themselves in certain places.

Mir looked at Misty.

‘What kind of gnome was that?’

“I put the essence of this worlds gnome in the form I remember from the world we came from. I have too few memories, but those are garden gnomes that would be placed overlooking a flower garden and I thought they would be something Dia would make.” Misty explained.

Mir looked that way again and examined them and their methods before nodding and then they began the next one.

In Misty’s mind, a nixie is a 5 cm tall fairy, but with a small fish tail for legs and no wings. Now they instead have fish fins for wings with small pair of legs coming out the side of the fishtail near the waist. On their neck is small slits that act like gills and they can perfectly fly out of water, but swim even better. They have pure black eyes and pointy ears and look more like a pixie than a fairy who are more humanoid.

The three water wisps soon merged and formed into a nixie who giggled and rushed into the nearby cloud water and the water wisps flew overhead and soon, in a similar fashion to the gnome, began to merge as well using the ambient mana. This was because the dungeon recognize them as an evolution and would evolve more naturally.

The next was the sylphs, they were similar to fairies but they were a humanoid shaped wind which would be wholly unsatisfying for Dia. So, Misty outright created a new shape making them have an upper body that can change from solid into wind and back while the lower body was a small green cyclone and once they were completely wind they could access their race ability to disperse into the wind and reform.

Again this surprised Mir and this time she even face… or flower palmed upon hearing Misty’s reason, but she was already coming to terms that the pair was going to pretty much make everything as they pleased. At the very least it helped that Misty kept the essence of the creature while only changing the shape.

With the three down, the last were the salamanders and the fire spirits. These were just as important as the others since they aided in breaking down the compost while they worked.

Salamander kept the lizard form, but it was more like a chameleon that was the size of Dia’s palm; from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail it all fit in her hand. This was their natural size in this world and they used their ability to control heat to make a mirage and hide themselves. In combination with their size, they had barely any presence.

Releasing the tiny lizards, three sets of two fire wisps merged naturally and formed salamanders.

Then Misty made the fire spirit. In all it is a really small fire pixie. The nature of fire spirit is that in a forest it is small but if it were within a volcano it can be found in human size or bigger and it might even be a bit demonic. When in a natural fire environment, the most powerful fire spirit that lives at the largest source of fire mana would even be categorized as a Great Angel of Fire.

That said, the ones that were formed here used five wisps to merge and form one really small one that was as tall as Misty herself.

She bowed to her and then giggled. The spirit then muttered something in an incomprehensible language to the wisps and salamanders that were now hiding and they began to move.

In a very short time, the elemental spirits began processing the mana and quite rapidly the number of spirits began to rise.

In such an mana rich environment, the wisps began to multiply and it resulted in there being an abundant number of workforce and creatures to make the population of spirits slowly rise.

Within the next eight hours, under the guidance of Mir, the four top spirits created a small balanced flow of mana throughout the entire island as the wisps processed the mana in the air. Under such conditions, the size of the island and clouds explosively began to expand.

The island that was at 11 meters in diameter began to shake and expand at a steady pace. The clouds were even more eye catching. It was as if a cold and warm front had met and now the clouds that stretched out 25 meters from the island kept rapidly expanding more and more.

“Wow…” Misty said after a few hours, noticing the sizes rapidly growing allowing the plant creatures to slowly spread out. With the increase of size, the plants were also slowly gaining more space and with Dia still asleep Misty began to move them around, keeping them from fighting or causing trouble.

As the first island finally reached 30 meters in diameter, the island size stabilized and stopped growing, but the clouds kept stretching. Slowly over the next day the clouds reached almost 100 meters from the shore before it finally stopped. The clouds went 100 meters to the side and 100 meters down.

From there they began to grow increasingly dense and from below the cloud that allowed the sunlight to pass slowly began to block the sunlight and began to cast a shadow.

Reaching this point Dia finally began to stir.

Mir saw her and quickly jumped away from her to not scare her due to her form still being rather scary. She knew more than to scare the girl and left Misty to deal with her.

Slowly the ghost of the little dungeon sat up and looked around blinking.

She didn’t recognize the place she was, but soon she looked around and saw the little pool that was 80% filled with water.

A little bit away the small channel of the cloud water had stretched to the size of a small stream that had gathered several other streams and formed a stronger current. Beyond that is a slowly stretching garden with quite a number of flowers before at the edge of all the eight segments of the island were the trees and monsters.

“Do you like it?” Misty asked appearing in front of Dia.

“What happened Misty?” Dia asked confused.

“You went to sleep after crying so me and Mir took care of the dungeon. With so much mana in the air, we even made a few fairies to take care of your island and then it grew big.” Misty said with a smile.

Dia blushed bright red hearing she fell asleep after crying, but as she looked around her eyes sparkled at all the flowers that were now sprouting. Around the flowers were a few trees that were providing shade and the sky was mostly covered by their branches, but it still let pockets of light to pass through letting the flowers soak in their light.

“So pretty!” Dia said with her eyes sparkling as she stood up and rushed into the small field of flowers.

This was possible thanks to the gnomes and earth wisps. With their capabilities, they could move the plants without causing problems such as killing or injuring the roots.

Like this, the flowers were moved closer to the dungeon core, the remaining weeds that haven’t evolved were placed after that and then the trees were placed at the edges allowing their roots to be both directly inside the cloud sea and the island. This allowed them to keep up their strong growth even though they were a bit further from the dungeon core where most of the mana was concentrated.

Only real trees that weren’t monsters were left within the garden because although a flower field is beautiful, shade also helped growth of a plant as well as the leaves from the trees working as fertilizer. There were a total of sixteen trees within the flower path.

As Dia was looking around she noticed one of the gnomes popping from the ground and froze. “Hey… isn’t that the hard pointy head thingy that mama put in the front of our house with the pretty snow white doll?” Dia asked pointing at the gnome.

“It’s called a garden gnome and I used the shape to make the gnomes in your garden. Just call him a gnome cause that is the name of his race.” Misty said.

Before she could react she heard the sound of splashing and turned her little head. Splashing meant fish so she wanted to see, but what she saw was a very tiny fish like fairy hopping through the water while giggling.

“KYAAA~~~! SO CUTE!” She said and instantly bolted towards the little nixie that had just jumped out of the water and caught her midair and began to cuddle.

The poor thing tried to struggle and soon got a chance, but Dia cupped her hands making it hard to jump out.

“Wow its a fishy fairy!” Dia said with her eyes sparkling.

She then saw a small red light as a small red fairy appeared in front of her hands and looked at the nixies who looked at her with a pleading expression, but the fire spirit just giggled and flew off.

“Misty~~~! What are all these pretty fairies!” Dia asked with sparkling eyes.

It was every little girl’s dreams to see a fairyland garden filled with fairies fluttering around, so of course Dia was over the moon.

“Dia, put the little fish fairy in the water, she doesn’t like being out of the water.” Misty said wryly.

Dia looked a bit downhearted, but released the little nixie who vanished into the water.

As she washed her ghost hands in the freshwater, she suddenly felt something next to her. As she looked she saw a dull red little ball that faded away and showed a tiny little lizard that tilted its head at her.

She wanted to cuddle, but she remembered the little fish fairy and was reluctant until the tiny salamander walked to her leg and rubbed its head on it.

She stretched out her arm and the salamander jumped on and began to climb.

She giggled as she felt a ticklish feeling from it climbing and it went all the way to her shoulder and cuddled up to her neck.

“So warm.” Dia muttered as she began to giggle from the tickling and eventually leading her to outright laugh and fall backwards on the ground. This lasted for a while before she pulled the salamander off and put it on the ground laughing.

Just as she looked up, she noticed winds gathering in front of her and a small cyclone formed and soon a small fairy figure appeared grinning and waving.

She looked at it interested and touched the wind, but it just felt like a gentle breeze. The sylph giggled and moved close to her face and kissed her cheek and vanished.

Dia was giddy, but as she goes to move to the edge where the weeds are she notices all the monsters and stops fearfully.

“Don’t worry Dia, I had them all stay in the outer corner. They look scary, but they won’t even dare hurt you.” Misty said and Dia nodded.

Misty pulled Dia back to the core where Mir was causing Dia to tremble.

Mir lifted her arm that extended and she wrote on the ground.

‘Did you like how I taught Misty how to make the fairies?’

Misty told her what the message said and Dia nodded.

‘You know, you are finally ready to make your own monsters.’

“REALLY!” Dia suddenly shouted making Misty roll her eyes.

‘The dungeon won’t grow anymore until the next monster is created. It’s called the Dungeon Boss. It’s the strongest monster in the dungeon and it protects the dungeon core or the stairs to the next floor normally.’

“So… how do we make it?” Dia asked shyly.

‘I hope you can make me the next dungeon boss. It's a bit easy, but also hard.’

Dia looked conflicted as she remembered what Mir did to Misty and since she wanted to be the dungeon boss it felt even more conflicting since she would remain close.

“Maybe we shouldn’t do that Mir. You will stay only 100 years and then you will go back to the spirit world and leave an empty shell that will form a strange personality with a familiar face. It will be strange.” Misty said.

‘That is true, but if I don’t do this my form won’t change unless Dia does it herself and she is reluctant to even come close to me.’

“Well… you hurt Misty before…” Dia muttered.

‘Then let’s do this, first we will make a brand new dungeon boss, but then you can change me to be more human okay?’

Dia nodded.

With that said and done, Dia slowly moved close and got near the mana pool that was almost full.

‘Call that big two headed monster over there and four wisps of each type.’

Mir pointed at the spitting thorny flower.

Misty flew over and called it, but made it close its buds completely. After that four wisps of each type flew over.

‘Put your left hand in the water then touch the trunk of the big tree. Then think of the wisps spinning around it slowly entering the trunk. You will get an image of what the flower will change into and you can change it as you want as long as you have mana in the pool.’

Misty instructed Dia who dipped her hand in the water and reluctantly touched the thorn bushy flower and closed her eyes.

She imagined the scene of the wisps spinning and entering the flower. She saw the monster flower grew a third head which was much bigger and became the main body, followed by several other buds appearing with lots of moving vines.

She shuddered as she saw this and instantly wanted something that looked pretty.

Instantly all the flower buds lost their mouth and just maintained the flower. It was like a gigantic rose bush but she knew that at the bottom of the rose was still a kind of opening for the plant to eat through, but she didn’t like such a huge monster and wanted something small.

Instantly the flower began to break apart. The main flower became smaller and the rose petals became bright pink. The many long extra vines remained but the biggest one became large like a bed. It also looked like a lily now and slowly the body of a woman made out of twisted bark appeared. Her face was human shaped, but it was wood.

Dia couldn’t push any more, but the woman was still pretty and the many flower vines slowly curled around the main flower forming a kind of bouquet arrangement making her feel safer.

She settled on this and opened her eyes.

In front of her the wisps began to spin and enter the flower as the tingly feeling from the water rushed into her hand and out the other into the flower. Slowly its base expanded and the biggest flower began to sprout, while side vines also started to sprout and formed lily buds that released a sweet relaxing smell. The biggest bud kept growing until it opened up and slowly the body of the tree woman appeared.

“Wow a Bewitching Lesser Lily Alraune!” Misty said.

Dia looked at her strangely.

“An alraune is how people call a plant lady. The lesser part is because she is made of wood and not skin and bones like how you used to be. She is from a lily plant and she has magic to make other people fall in love with her sweet smelling flowers.” Misty explained each word of the name.

Dia was still confused, but she liked the outcome. However, as she moved her hand she noticed it was touching the bottom of the pool that was almost empty.

“Wow, that used a lot of mana and even then the plant isn’t smart like us.” Misty said.

The first floor dungeon boss has been created. By creating the boss, the floor is now stabilized and solid. The area within 2 meters around the dungeon core will move up to floor 2. The boss will remain and guard the way up. Monsters can freely go to the second floor as long as the dungeon conscious allows it.

Upon this message appearing, all the spirits jumped out of the ground and clouds.

The area just before the circle that held the cloud water began to part and a small rock floated out. After that, small clouds came out of it and stretched two meters out the little cloud and island rose up to form the initial island for the 2rd floor.

Dia was still down below in shock as the little cloud stopped 20 meters above her head.

Please describe the appearance of your stairs. Warning, once this is chosen it will be permanent.

Misty told her what the message said and hearing that she remembered the stairway in her house, but she didn’t want that. Then she remembered a story that spoke of the little farmer that sold his last cow for magic seeds that made a huge beanstalk that took him to the land of giants in the clouds.

A big excited grin appeared on her face.

“Make it a big beanstalk!” She shouted.

Without warning the island began to tremble and from the hole one large vine grew out. It grew while slowly twisting its vine that was slowly turning brown and bark was forming as it strengthened itself. All along it were huge leaves that worked as steps to climb.

The island had been pushed to the side by almost 10 meters and it expanded due to the rush of mana to make the stairs.

Misty looked confused, but Dia was grinning and even blushed from excitement.

The first floor is now connected and denser mana will slowly flow down from the upper floors allowing the first floor to expand.

“A cloud dungeon is really strange. The higher the floor, the smaller it is instead of the other way around.” Misty said.

Mir nodded as she looked up. ‘Let’s go up, have Dia call some nixies and order some wisps and gnomes to come with us as well. That way we can expand the second floor which will lead to more expansion of the first floor.’ Mir said.

With a nod Misty snapped Dia out of it and they slowly gathered a few spirits, some herbs, flowers and defensive plants and slowly climbed the beanstalk to settle in the second floor. As the spirits reached it, they felt the island suddenly lower until the second floor was at the top of the troposphere while the rest was submerged. This showed how the dungeon truly worked. There was no escaping reaching the ground eventually.

The beanstalk was, as expected, not directly in the middle of the dungeon but instead next to the clouds. The clouds were attached to the last leaf and allowed for easy access. Also the clouds this time were fluffy and solid and could be walked on unlike the cloud water one. The far side clouds were cloud water.

“Oh this is island cloud. It seems from the second floor up we can make more ‘rooms’ with the island being the boss room.” Misty said

The nixies were left in the water and the others each took their own areas. With the excess mana left, the cloud water was expanded to 12 meters. The cloud water covered everything except a hole in the cloud where the beanstalk was. There was also an option to expand the island cloud.

They simply waited for mana to gather and slowly worked from there.
