《Solomon's Crucible》12. An Exciting Workout

Solomon pivoted backwards, releasing the pressure he'd been applying to the injured boar. As the boar ran past him he bumped it with his shield, both to nudge the boar away from him and to give himself a boost as he jumped backwards. He desperately wanted to evade the boar coming at him from behind.
He almost made it.
The charging boar had just about missed him completely when it tossed its head and caught his calf with its tusk. The sharp pain from the point of contact provided a sort of accent to the painful shock of having his leg scooped out from under him.
Part of Solomon's mind noted that he was developing far too rich of a library of painful experiences lately. The rest of him focused on trying to salvage his landing.
Despite his best efforts, he came down in a tumble. His investment in dexterity and a little bit of luck at least let him keep his limbs from tangling up. He was still dizzy from being spun around, but the spur of an imminent maiming had him popping up to his feet before he even tried to take stock of the situation.
Once up, Solomon took a quick glance around to find that both boars were slowing down and getting ready for their next attack. The one with a spear through it was moving awkwardly, at least, but it wasn't giving up.
Standing his ground against two boars at once was a recipe for disaster. He turned and ran. His pulse was thundering in his ears in counterpoint to his feet hammering away at the ground.
Solomon neared the edge of the clearing. He scanned the trees ahead of him, thankful for every step he took without a boar tackling him from behind. There was a low-hanging branch just a little off to the side. He angled himself to head straight for it.

As he drew near the branch, he put everything he could into a mighty leap. He surprised himself with the height he reached off the ground. He realized a split second later that instead of grasping the branch with his right hand, he was about to slam his wrist right into it. Fortunately, he surprised himself again with his reaction time, pulling his arm down and snatching hold of his target.
His feet kept moving, just about yanking his arm out of its socket as they swung upward. Part of Solomon was shocked that he was supporting so much weight with one arm, but most of him was focused on holding on. His legs swung back, and as he swung them forward he managed to redirect the motion so that he was able to wrap his legs around the branch. Then it was a matter of scrambling and cursing for a moment before he finally got himself perched securely on top of the branch.
He was going to look back to find the boars but found he didn't have to, as the uninjured one charged underneath him just as he got settled. The one that still had his spear lodged through its body came walking up a moment later. He took a certain vindictive pleasure in seeing that the boar was having trouble moving around, as the butt of the spear tended to slide down and catch on the ground as it walked.
That was about the only thing Solomon had to feel happy about. He was panting like a dog, squeezing the branch with both legs and his good arm to make sure he didn't fall and put himself at the boars' mercy with nothing but his pocketknife to fend them off.
He was also, now that he had a moment to think things over while he wasn't in immediate danger, pissed off. He'd been mentally prepared for a fight when he entered the dungeon. He would have liked to be facing something smaller, but he would have been fine fighting a boar one on one. The system's attempt to gore him in the back had thrown him off. The whole thing struck him as deeply unfair.

"Is this how it's gonna be?"
Even the cool sensation of his HP being used to heal his calf didn't do much to soothe his feelings. Absently, he reached down and rubbed his lower leg. He could feel the beginning of a tear in his pants, but they'd held up well enough to their first test. He didn't want to think about what would have happened if the boar's first attack had left him unable to walk.
The fact that the first boar had taken his weapon from him added insult to injury. Fortunately, he still had his MP and his perch on the branch gave him enough space to put another weapon together from his extra materials. It would be a little unnerving to work while a pair of dungeon monsters were staring right at him waiting for him to fall, but at least they couldn't climb trees. All he had to do was get his crafting materials out of his inventory.
Sorry! Inventory can not be accessed during a combat encounter!
"You really know how to kick a guy when he's down."
The system didn't deign to respond.
Solomon gathered himself and took a look around. If not for the monsters trying to kill him, it would be a pleasant view. The dungeon's first floor was exactly the kind of secluded wilderness getaway that he sought out on his hikes. Whatever the system was doing to simulate the sun was shining down with a pleasant warmth, illuminating a lightly forested region of perhaps ten acres. It was hard to be sure of the distance, but if he looked carefully he could make out a shimmering wall that he figured should be the edge of the floor.
He calmed down as he had a chance to catch his breath. So he didn't have access to his inventory. So his weapon was stuck through a monster. He still had enough MP left to improve the gear he was wearing. His spear was constantly draining that stupid boar's HP and should eventually start doing real damage. He had plenty of time left before the twenty-four hour grace period was over.
He hadn't started out his attack on the dungeon on the right foot, but he was far from done.

Entangled Fates Book 1 - Quantum Beginnings
“By far, the greatest danger of Artificial Intelligence is that people conclude too early that they understand it.” —Eliezer Yudkowsky Hey all, we're moving over to book 2. This content is in a state of transition. The book is now availble on Amazon (includes extra chapters): https://www.royalroad.com/amazon/B07W1534R8 Artificial intelligence was nearly mankind’s last invention. AI took off like a rocket, then when it racked up an impressive death toll, it crashed before it could blossom and took most high-tech industries with it. Resistance and fears became deep-set. Two decades after the infamous Rev. 4.6 incidents, humanity hasn’t quit dreaming of the wealth and power that could be at their fingertips. A new generation of mega-corporations rose from the ashes. When one melds a quantum computer to a barely functional mental patient as a PR move, there are those who seek to profit, those who want to destroy it, and Alex. Alex Sage is a typical college student trying to keep up his grades and maybe find a meaningful connection with the fairer sex. Then, an automated semi crashes into his home, killing his family and turning his head into a pin cushion in the process. Alex awakens to find most of his memories gone and an illegal AI hidden in his brain implant. Now the pet project of a tech billionaire and heavily in debt, Alex struggles to stay valuable enough to be kept online. Still grappling with the repercussions of his injuries, and threats from a dangerous anti-augmentation political movement, there are no easy answers and threats loom around every corner. Alex must use whatever resources he can to escape from under the thumb of a ruthless corporation, while keeping those he comes to love safe. Chapters will stay up on RRL until Aug 10. It'll go up on Kindle Unlimited after that. How do you get those extra chapters I didn't have planned for RR? If you want them, they'll be in the published book. Book 2 will still make sense without them - I made sure of that. But... isn't $3 a lot for extra chapters? Think of it as tipping me for a good job and you'd also be getting my eternal thanks. If you enjoyed it so much that the idea of missing out a few chapters haunts you, I did my job as an author and made an engaging story. What's in those extra chapters? Resolving a few issues, set up for the cybernetic revolution, a rather intense sex scene with a new partner, revelations of who's really pulling strings, and a bit of set up for book 2. Complaints that people missed out on it when it was published here won't help (sorry!). I posted this for the folks who helped me shape the book, which is you all! (Again, yay!) But... Why! Why not keep it all on RR forever? My editor likes being paid for one. For two, I'd like the ability to get broader readership. If I break even on editor costs, I'll be incredibly happy. What about book 2? Drafts for Book 2 will go up around Sept 10. My draft of Book 2 is done, and it will be handed to the editor once Book 1 is published. Feedback has been even more positive. Beta readers devoured it and wanted more. I'll add a link to Book 2 once it's up on RR. I'm more or less, using you all for Beta Readers, so you get it before it's "canon" and edited. I invite active and meaningful feedback during this process. In return, you get early access to chapters. That does mean that the book content or plot might be adjusted before it gets published as I refine it. Sex Y/N? Yes. I heard the feedback, 90% wanted it explicit. You all will get the "full" experience. Will I dump all of book 2 here? Honestly, I'm not sure yet. At a minimum, it'll be up to the 75% mark as we collect feedback, much like what I did with book 1. It really depends on how good the feedback is and how nice people are. Lots of support + meaningful feedback to make it better = higher likelihood you get all the book. Will be it up here indefinitely? No, it'll probably go up on KU at some point, but I'll make sure there's enough time for a large readership to grab it here. Then we move to book 3 which already is around 60K words already. What about other adventures in the same universe/characters? Yep. Absolutely. Nothing ready to share yet though. I plan to keep those side chapters and more slice of life stories as RR exclusive. Since I'm carving this off in book-sized segments, I'll have to figure out where those disconnected story arcs belong. I'm open to suggestions.

Izuku Midoriya was a college student, just trying to get his teaching degree. He had been living in the sam duplex house for a year now and hadn't had any problems with the elderly woman who lived below him. She was a quiet and lovely neighbor. Until she died. Sike, I'm not that terrible guys. She just got put into an assisted living thing. Which meant the bottom floor was up for rent and it didn't take long for Izuku's landlord to find a new tenant, or tenants. Katsuki Bakugou and Shoto Todoroki were the two guys that moved in below Izuku. They were also in a band. A very loud band. Izuku was close to going crazy with all the noise he now had to live with and the two wouldn't quiet down, even after he asked, multiple times. Eventually, Izuku listens to them practice so much, one of their songs gets stuck in his head. He takes out the trash, not even realizing that he was singing it softly to himself. Until the two boys hear him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Izuku threw the bag into the dumpster on the side of the house, softly singing the lyrics that were now stuck in his head. "Hey, that's our song." A voice said from behind him. Izuku snapped his attention to the two guys sitting on the stairs of his front door. "It's stuck in my head because neither of you seem to have common courtesy to practice somewhere else." Izuku snapped back, not wanting to deal with either of the arrogant males.Shoto seemed unfazed by his attitude. "You've got a nice voice." He mused. Izuku eyed him suspiciously, not trusting his compliment. "Thanks I guess." He muttered. "Wanna join a band?"
