《Dragon: Birth of an Ancient》A2:C9 - Welcome to Netherspire City

Kai's heart lurched slightly as he passed a semi-transparent barrier, one even his keen senses could not detect before it rippled, however, before he had the chance to retreat, his mind jarred at the scene before him.

Flying creatures were flying through similar entrances, one in each direction, meeting one of the many flying demons or angels, before being redirected to landing zones.

Semi-transparent images, showing a wide range of people or products littered the walls, seemingly attempting to sell or promote products.

Beasts and the rare monster, would land, transform into their humanoid form before being offered a robe and lining up and waiting their turn to approach a box-like construct and talk to the human inside. After a short process, and standing in front of a crystal that illuminated the person, they would be given a token and move to the centre of the room were disk-like platforms would descend into the tower.

In all of Kai's inherited memories, he had seen nothing like it and, once again, a desolate feeling wrapped around his core, reminding him that this is not the world his ancestors knew.

For the million years that his incubation had lasted, the world had moved forward. In the beginning, it seemed similar. The dress and weapons of the humans, languages and the Frozen Forest were enough to give him some comfort.

When he was expelled from the forest, the changes in the landscape had shaken him, and the buildings and flying structures did not help, but it was only now that he realised how much things had changed.

Species of beasts that he had never seen before rushed about or qued up, mortal enemies, like the angels and demons were working together in harmony, and strange images, materials and constructions were all around him.

It seemed to Kai that, in the eternal war between Chaos and Order, Order had gained the advantage and the world had become a much more boring, dull world.

As a being of Chaos, an immortal dragon, a creature that's existence was against the laws of mortals and gods, this slightly unsettled him, yet it was only to the point of being uncomfortable.

"Kai, this way," said Mellisa, unaware of the dragon's inner thoughts as she analysed his surprised, slightly nervous expression and relaxed somewhat. By his rapidly moving eyes, it was clear that this was the first time he had been inside an airdrome and so, the thought of him coming with hostile intentions diminished.

The demoness hovering nearby clearly disproved of Mellisa interfering with her job. A frown cast upon her features as her mouth twisted into a pout, revealing two sharp canines, but after seeing a small badge on Mellisa's belt, shrugged and moved to the side.

Mellisa's call brought Kai to his senses and, nervously, his large-wings propelled him forward to follow her and Eldric. Even though he decided to trust her and follow, a faint, orange glow could be seen between his chest scales and along with his throat.

At the first sign of trouble, Kai was going to incinerate everything. Man, woman, young or old, beast or monster. In this sort of enclosed space, his flames would be unstoppable.

Mellisa shivered, the reason unknown to her, and turned to see the scowling dragon, his lips twitching in aggression, as every loud noise attracted his attention. "Kai, relax. We are just here to register your arrival, get a token and then we can go get something to eat. As I work for the Sky Wardens, I don't need to do it, but I will go in front and show you that it's safe."

While unusual, Mellisa's behaviour wasn't unheard of. Powerful creatures, especially monsters were treated cautiously even if they were bonded and those who interacted them were always cautious to a certain point. An enraged or terrified monster or high-level beast, acting on instinct was not something they wanted to be involved with.

Eldric flew towards one of the many landing zones, a circle of green, summery grass and landed.

Kai followed and soon noticed that most of those close to him, and even a few in the distance were watching him with wide eyes, some even taking small crystals out and causing them to flash.

Even the demoness, who tried to maintain her professional appearance earlier, was slightly distracted while dealing with her next charge as she watched Kai out of the corner of her eye.

The bustling, noisy room became more and more silent as people noticed the flying lizard, the size of a large cow, preparing to land.

Mellisa, noticing the stares and worried that this would anger the obviously nervous Kai, quickly jumped off Eldric and pulled out a robe form an inconspicuous bag, the same colour as her clothes, at her hip.

At the same time, Eldric started to shrink as he was engulfed in a bright, white light. His bird-like features turning more humanoid until, instead of a large vermillion bird, a red-haired, muscly man stood naked, his back straight and proud.

Grabbing the offered robe without any trace of discomfort that he was naked, Eldric made sure to keep an eye on Kai before quickly pulling the robe over his head, his features set in a serious expression.

Kai hesitated a moment, the intense states of those nearby causing the urge to release his dragonic fire to rise before he took a deep breath and slowly descended.

This was his first landing, and while it was clear to those with experience that he was inexperienced, he still managed it fairly easily and landed on all fours with a soft thud.

A few people, both humans and beasts that looked like guards nervously patrolled the area and kept an eye on him, causing Kai's muscles to tense.

They carried stick-like weapons that didn't have a sharp edge, slung over their shoulder or held in the nook of their arms, and while Kai could sense danger from the strange objects, it wasn't at the level that he felt threatened.

"Come on Kai, transform into your humanoid appearance, and we can get going. Don't want them to mistake you for an unbound unenlightened do we?" said Mellisa in a comforting voice.

Kai turned to face Mellisa, causing Eldric to instinctively move in front of her. As a fellow monster, a high level one at that, he could sense Kai's unease and the occasional bloodlust that rippled outwards.

Eldric knew that they were walking a very fine line here and silently cursed Mellisa for not picking one of the quieter ports to land. He knew that creatures that had escaped the adventurers and hunters and reached enlightenment, especially those with powerful bloodlines like the one he sensed before him, were not simple.

Kai realised that this was perhaps the first test he would have to undergo. A very clever test that was made to seem as natural and non-provocative as possible.

From all the other beasts and even Eldric, Kai knew that he had to transform and so, with a deep breath and feeling slightly depressed, he began.

Unlike Eldrics transformation, which looked magical and, in some ways, beautiful, Kai's change was, in a single word, monstrous.

Loud cracking noises, as muscles and bones broke down, a small portion of them reforming while the rest was sucked into his void like core, caused those watching to flinch and cringe in sympathy pain and shock.

Scales retracted inward. Where red, raw flesh appeared, white, jade-like skin quickly formed. Nails and teeth shrunk, condensing and becoming less terrifying as black hair sprouted from his head, stopping when it was a few centimetres long.

The process was far more painful than it looked and Kai couldn't help but close his eyes and hold his breath as his body shook violently.

He had taken his time with the transformation in the Frozen Forest, but he couldn't afford to do that here and so was pushing both draconic essence and mana into the process, speeding it up at the cost of comfort.

Mellisa and Eldric were shocked, their mouths hanging open in an o-like shape, similar to the crowd that was gathering.

While the process sounded intense, it only lasted a few breaths before a naked teen, with a gaunt, yet muscly frame stood before them.

Breathing in and out, a few black scales that had broken away due to the rapid pace of the transformation, falling to the floor, Kai opened his eyes.

Blazing golden eyes, with pitch black pupils, much more vivid against his snowy, white skin scanned area before finding Mellisa and Eldric.

Taking a step towards them, Kai's legs did not move quite the way he wanted and, without any grace, he quickly face-planted the floor.
