《A New Breed of Pirate: A VRMMO Tale》Chapter 32: Little hands, Big rock

Well, I guess that explains all of the skill levels I’ve gotten over the last couple days… it almost feels like cheating. Although, is cheating while you had no idea you were cheating really cheating? Actually, do I give a shit? Nope, I don’t think I do.
All I’ve done in the last few days is either get richer or more powerful. Which I am going to need a stupid amount of both to prove that the right person, given the resources, can change the world through an unshakable sense of self… and a healthy dose of paranoia. Well, I have a ways before I have to worry about someone I trust poisoning me… I think.
There is probably a lot of news that I should catch up on, but screw it. I decide to spend just enough time to read the wiki on Mexican Axolotl to be informed on what that serum was based on. That’s all I have the patience to do though. It’s been almost a week straight of having some kind of horrible injury. Well, I hope I’m healed… I may actually kill Liber if he lied to me. Eh, nevermind. I think that would just hurt me in the long run.
I insert the spinal implant into the base of my skull, and lay back into my bed, falling into the game.
As I come to, I realize I have never been this fucking hungry in my life. I look around, and see that half-eaten nutritional brick. I start biting off the largest chunks my mouth could fit. It’s dried out some, which makes it feel like half-dried cardboard… but this is the best damn thing I’ve ever eaten. After I finish it, I have a moment of feeling full, but then I realize I am thirstier than I’ve ever been in my life. I can actually feel the moisture leaving my mouth. I honestly feel like I might die if I don’t get water NOW. I run out to the nearest water barrel, and I dip my head under. I take in huge gulps of water until the thirst subsides. That had to be at least a gallon of water I gulped down. As I look around, I see the water barrel on the porch of the building I slept in… I look down to see a horse’s water trough. Then I notice the horse just staring at me from the next trough over.

“Don’t fucking judge me. At least I don’t have to worry about eating myself to death if I get fed too much… I think.” My stomach is hurting pretty bad right now…
After I drank a few shots of rum to help my body kill whatever bacteria I drank, I head towards Mrs. Brown’s. As I’m traveling through the town, I notice a huge difference in how people treat me. Children now point and stare, instead of running away. As for adults, I only got a glance at most. I’m just glad that people don’t find me horrifying, but I do wish I had a mirror. A child’s scream breaks my train of thought. At first I thought it might have been just kids playing, but then I hear it again… there is a definite note of terror in that scream. Mrs Brown will just have to wait.
As I’m sprinting towards the screaming, I relish in the feeling of flexing my legs, willing myself faster. Being on a ship for so long didn’t leave me much opportunity to run, but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been this fast. I’m going so fast, that I can’t stop as a group of players grouped up into a tight crowd appears. I end up slamming into them, scattering them like a human bowling ball. I pick myself up, and I look at what I just broke up. At the center of the sprawled out players, there is a little girl. She is battered, bleeding, and terrified, and curled up into a ball crying.
The first player to get up starts looking around in confusion until he sees me, “Who the hell are you? Why would you ruin our fun like that?”
Wait, did I just hear that right, “What do you mean fun?”
“You know, beating the hell out of NPCs. It’s hilarious to watch how they react. It’s so realistic!”
I just snapped after looking at the little girl in that kinda shape for such a stupid reason. I sprint up to him, feigning a punch, but actually kicking the side of his knee. I hear a soft ‘pop’ as the ligaments in his knee tear.
“AHHHH, FUCK! My leg, my fucking leg. Why the fuck would you do that?”
“I wanted to see how realistic your reaction would be. Although, that might have been a fluke. I better make sure with the rest of you.”

I take a few steps back and pull the khukri knives from my sheathe on my back. As soon as they come out, the other players start to freak out.
One of them points at me with a look of recognition, “Oh shit… is that Utah? Let’s kill him! We could be famous overnight!”
Another player holds up her hands, “Fuck that, I’ve seen some clips of that crazy mother fucker. I’m out.”
I reach deep to find my best authoritative voice, “Everybody stop. Some of you might wanna walk away from this, but you didn’t give this little girl that choice. Do you honestly believe I’m going to let any of you walk away? But, don’t worry, I’m not going to kill any of you.”
I slide the blade of my khukri across the inside of my forearm. As the blood starts to flow, I feel myself sink into the first level of my blood high. I drop both kuhkris behind me.
I break my gaze from the blood flowing down my arm. Looking up, smiling from the power I feel surging, “I’m not going to use my blades either… I want to hurt you with my hands. I want to feel your bones break.”
Some of the players pale at my words, some of the scoff at them, and some of them get angry. But, every single one of them pulls out some kind of blade. Well, besides for the guy on the ground beside me. He just cowers in the dirt like an earthworm. Ooohh, earthworms sound tasty right now… wait, what the fuck? Why did I just think that?
Before I can contemplate that weird-ass thought, the biggest player makes a move. His dreadlocks swing back and forth as he stutter steps towards me. He stabs at me with the 12 inch dagger in his left hand. I bend my torso to the side, pinning his hand against my chest with my left arm. I bring my fist across, slamming it into his locked elbow. I feel the ligaments pop as his elbow gets destroyed. He falls down to his knee, and I take the chance to rip the same arm out of socket at his shoulder. The tearing I feel from his shoulder is so damn satisfying.
I leave him screaming in the dirt as I walk up to the remaining six players. A guy and a girl run up to try to stab me from two different sides. I deflect the guy’s knife, but just barely move out of the way as the girl’s knife continues into her friends chest. I stomp down on her overextended lead leg, causing her knee to fold backwards. I slam my elbow into her temple knocking her unconscious.
The player that wanted to run earlier pointed at me accusingly, “ I thought you said you weren’t going to kill us! He just got stabbed near the heart! He’ll never survive that…”
I just give her a confused look, “I didn’t kill him.” I point to the girl I just knocked out, “She stabbed him, not me.”
A look of horror spread across her face just before she turns to run. I lunge grabbing her ponytail, and jerking her towards me while I kick her lower back as hard as I can. I feel her spine pop under my boot.
She hits the ground like a sack of bricks. As she starts trying to get up, she start to scream, “I can’t feel my legs! I can’t move my legs.”
I look up from her, smiling at the remaining two players. Both of them drop to their knees as they both start begging for mercy. I walk up to them, and put my hands on their heads, “Don’t worry guys. I forgive you.”
As I feel them both relax, I slam their heads together as hard as I can, “Psych.”
The both land face first into the ground… with both of their skulls caved in a few inches, “Fuck, I ended up killing two of them.”
About that time I notice a squelching noise behind me. I turn around to see the battered little girl beating the first player’s face in with a huge rock.
“Damn kid, I think you got him.”
She turns around with tears in her eyes, and she gives me a nod. Then she slams the rock back down, leaving it lodged into his mushy face.
I raise my eyebrows, “Well, remind me not to fuck with you kid.”

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

This was ment to be the self-published 'real' book of Binary Progression; turns out there isn't much of a market for this kind of story... that and it sucked! He discovers an old, abandoned game with an active, albeit very eccentric, community of no more than five-hundred players on a single server maintained by an unknown individual. Unbeknownst to him, the game he found is more than just an ordinary WoW clone and after many adventures with his group, they make the terrifying discovery that after two full volumes this story becomes a god damn isekai. What’s worse, JohnWillStab, the number-one edgelord on the server is somehow ending up in positions of power despite literally being an undead rogue with evil magic tentacles! Will John’s edginess ruin the isekai? Why does the doctor have the highest kill-count in the game? Is 👑 really a valid character you could use for your username? Can the chef perform an exorcism? Why is God asking John for chicken nuggets? Really, he could just spawn them in - in fact, we saw him spawning food in before!
