《A New Breed of Pirate: A VRMMO Tale》Chapter 20

Well that’s an awful thought...
Who knows I have money? I know I forgot to turn my feed off, but that much gold would be on everyone’s radar. If they saw that chest of gold I’m sure every player on this island would have taken a crack at me. I don’t think any locals would know, unless Mrs. Brown has a death wish. Zijde made it pretty clear he’d kill her if she screwed him over.
Zijde brings me back to focus as we turn the corner to the Brown’s gigantic bar, “Ok, Bheki take this and lose yourself in the crowd. I would ask Utah, but his face garners too much attention.”
Bheki dons the large coat to cover up the ludicrous amount of weapons he has, and meanders through the crowd. ZIjde motions for me to stay put as he strolls through the front doors. I just lean up against the side of the building to wait. I can’t help but notice how powerful I feel with all these weapons on my person. It reminds me of how I felt back when I went on missions as a PJ. I use to tell everyone that I was a Pararescuer, and they kinda assumed I was like a military helicopter paramedic. All I could do was chuckle since I couldn’t talk about most of the missions I took part in. I really wonder how many international statutes we broke with some of the shit we did...
“Always a pleasure to do business with you Mrs. Brown. I will have the amount verified by this time tomorrow. I will let you know of any discrepancies.” Zijde walks out the building followed by Mrs. Brown and a couple guys carrying a chest the size of a large cooler.
Mrs. Brown tilts her head and crosses her arms underneath her chest… which pushes her breast up to seemingly impossible proportions, “Captain, my darling Captain, you should know I only wish to win your affections. We would become great together. The things we could accomplish are endless.”
Throughout her entire offer, Mrs. Brown was dripping with charm. She even had me wanting Zijde take her up on it, but the captain just stared into her eyes.
His said eyes never once wavered as he gives her a smile to kill for, “My dear, I must politely refuse. Someone with my reputation could do nothing but harm your wonderful enterprise.”

She tsks in disdain, “I see... I need to find another capable man to be the face of my company. Do you have any you’d part with?”
Without missing a beat she turns, giving me a smile that sends my heart fluttering. She turns back to Zijde, “I have one in mind. He’ll always have a spot in my… ‘company’.”
With that she leaves. The two men with her set the chest down and follow her in without a word. I turn to Zijde with a wide-eyed look of shock on my face. Zijde bursts out laughing so hard I thought he might hit the ground.
“Well my dear friend, it seems that you might be the object of the affections I’ve spurned for so long. Like any pirate worth their salt, you’re free to make any choice you desire. I hear that fire is fun to play with, and I’m sure that particular flame would be… interesting. Haha, help me with the chest.”
As we go to pick it up I start to realize, ‘Ah shit, this is gonna be stupid heavy.’ But, we pick it up and start carrying it with relative ease. I guess I need to start reading the forums to see if there are any other physics-breaking properties of this game.
As we start walking I give Zijde a worried look, “Cap’n, aren’t we a little undergunned to be moving this much loot?”
Zijde just chuckles, “Two things my friend. First, if we had an armed entourage we’d probably get mobbed by the good people of Nassau. Most people here are quite desperate. On the other hand, the people walking around have no idea how important a chest two people carrying could be. Second, there are very few people that know about this little transaction. So, if a group well armed enough comes by to take it, it’ll be easy to find whose skin I need to take it from… and the crew is waiting at the docks. If they hear more than two shots, a few dozen armed pirates will descend on our attackers.”
I nod slowly as we continue walking. That makes a lot of sense actually. It takes a lot less effort to move something in secret than with intimidation, and the risk with each is about the same. Also, the thought of that many pirates protecting their next few months pay is terrifying.

As we get about a 100 yards from the dock, I see four men in odd looking clothes eyeing us from a alleyway. I look behind us a few moments after we passed it and see the same men start tailing us. One gets a little too close for comfort and I instantly know it’s a player. Fuck this isn’t good…
“Hello friends! Can I help you?”
I turn back and see four more men walking towards us. I start to panic for a moment, but I realize these four aren’t players. They look like some thugs trying to make a quick buck. So, maybe they aren’t ambushing us together? I look back and sure enough, the group of players are hanging back.
The biggest local walks up to Zijde with his arms out trying to look more intimidating, “What’s in the chest little man?”
Zijde just smiles as he motions for me to put the chest down. He takes a step back and hands the man the key, “Here you go friend. Find out for yourself.”
The man scoffs as he snatches the key from him. As he reaches out to insert the key Zijde catches my eye. He has the same smile as the night we fed the man to the pigs, and he simply nods to the three other men. I turn back to see a look of shock on the other men's faces. Then I hear the hissing of metal, and that gives way to the sound of metal cutting through flesh and bone. I look down to see the man’s head start to fall to the side, only to be caught by a small piece of flesh barely holding it together. Blood squirts an almost comical distance as the man's heart keeps pumping. As I watch the blood splatter across the sun-bleached wood of the walkway, I feel that sense of excitment and euphoria creep into the base of my skull.
Notification
Everything seems to freeze, but I know any moment his three friends are going to do something stupid. So, I did what any reasonable person would do. I pull my blunderbuss out and fire into them.
Notification
I ignore the second notification as I sheathe the gun and pull out a khukri. The shot tore through the first to two killing them. The one in the back is trying to get a pistol out of his waistband as I step over the dead. Just as he points his cocked pistol towards me, I step to the side and bring my blade down at his elbow as hard as I could.
Notification
I feel my blade glide through the flesh, but just before I sever it, his pistol goes off. I grab my second blade, pulling it out in and lodging it into the man’s temple.
Notification
Jesus, how many notifications am I gonna get? After I pull out my khukri, I turn to find Zijde holding a bloody sword and fingering a hole in his frock coat, “That fucker almost hit me Utah. You must be more careful cutting off people arms. You apparently never know who can get hurt.”
He bursts out into an infectious laugh and retrieves the key. I look past him, but I can’t see any sign of the players. Hell, I guess that’s good news. The rest of the way to the docks was pretty calm. I guess Zijde isn’t worried about any authorities since we just left the bodies where they fell. Although, there were plenty of witnesses that I'm sure would be terrified to say it was anything other than self defense.
“Have a good trip Cap’n?”
Gunney was waiting for us with a rowboat full of the crew behind him. Zijde just smile and nods as we hand the chest off to the crew. As they secure it, Bheki pops out of nowhere like a creep.
“Captain, you both were followed the entire way.” Bheki face is full of concern.
Zijde just waves it off as he hops into the boat, “Oh we took care of them Bheki. Don’t worry so much!”
“Not that trash Captain. I was referring to them.”
We all follow Bheki’s finger and see a group of ten people watching us. Among them were the four players from earlier. A woman wearing a bright purple tank top steps forward to wave at us. Wait, a tank top? Well, I guess it’s safe to assume my new found fame has garnered some unwanted attention from my fellow players.
