《The Blue Mage Raised by Dragons》Book 5 Chapter 133

“There’s a letter for you.”
Tafel turned her head away from her paper. At the entrance of her room, there was a skeleton. It was standing still, holding out a latter in its right hand. Tafel raised an eyebrow. “Well? What are you waiting for?” she asked and stretched out her arm. “Bring it here.”
The skeleton walked over and placed the letter in Tafel’s hand. Then, it turned around and walked away, causing Tafel to stare at it with a slight furrow in her brow. Sometimes, she wasn’t sure if the skeletons were the remains of once-rude people or if they had been damaged during the process of being turned into an undead. Or perhaps, the skeleton was having a bad day. Tafel shrugged and opened the letter. Her eyes lit up upon seeing the contents, and she climbed to her feet. A silver glow appeared on her horns, and a portal opened beside her. She stuffed the paper she was reading earlier inside of it before opening a second portal. She poked her head inside of it and looked around before walking through.
“Hi, Tafel,” Vur said. He was sitting on a wooden box, facing the Recordkeeper who was also sitting on a wooden box. Not too far away from them, placed in the middle of the room, there was an opulent couch made from bear fur. “How are you?”
“I’m good,” Tafel said and glanced at the couch. A few skeletons walked around it, carrying boxes and furniture pieces. Thankfully, with the addition of wardrobes and cabinets and shelves and paintings placed against the walls, the golden glare had been significantly reduced. “Why are you sitting on the boxes and not the couch?”
“I’m already comfortable,” Vur said. He nodded at Tafel. “Are you here to test another spell?”

Tafel raised the letter in her hand. “Nope,” she said and shook her head. She walked over to Vur and took a seat on another wooden box. Luckily, there was a whole pile of them placed on the ground. “Alice finally announced the time and date of her wedding with Mr. Skelly. She sent us a bunch of questions she wants answered, an RSVP letter.”
Stella tilted her head. “What does RSVP stand for?”
Tafel furrowed her brow. She had never really thought about it before. “Respond soon, Vur, please,” Tafel said with a straight face and nodded upon seeing the fairy queen blinking as if she were stunned. She leaned closer to Vur and placed the letter between him and herself.
Vur raised an eyebrow. “Why does she even need to ask some of these questions?”
“She sent the same letter to everyone she knows,” Tafel said. “So, even though she knows we’ll definitely be there, it’ll still ask us if we’re going to be there or not.” She looked around before opening a portal and retrieved a quill and some ink. The portal closed as she wrote down her and Vur’s name before scribbling a checkmark on the box indicating they would be there. She glanced at Vur. “What do you want to eat at the wedding?”
“Raw bear meat,” Vur said.
“Good choice,” Tafel said and wrote down Vur’s suggestion word for word.
Stella pointed at the letter. “You’re supposed to choose between fish, chicken, pork, or beef.” Rather than checking boxes with different options, Tafel had written over them in large letters.
“Those are suggestions,” Tafel said. “If we weren’t supposed to offer our own suggestions, there wouldn’t have been space to write any down.”

“…But there wasn’t space.”
“Moving on,” Tafel said and cleared her throat. “Relationship status…, married. Traveling accommodations…, not required. Inn accommodations…, also not required. Song requests….” Tafel turned her head towards Vur. “Do you have any song requests? I think they’re for dances.”
Vur shook his head.
“Alright,” Tafel said. Her horns glowed silver, and a portal appeared beside her. Without warning, there was a short scream, and Alice tumbled out with a stack of papers in her arms. Tafel and Vur blinked at the guild master that was lying on the ground with a confused expression on her face. Tafel cleared her throat. “I think that’s the first time something like this has ever happened.”
“You opened a portal right in front of me, didn’t you?” Alice asked as she picked herself off the ground and glared at Tafel.
“Not on purpose,” Tafel said and held the letter out to Alice. “We filled out your RSVP letter.”
“You could’ve just mailed it back to me,” Alice said and grabbed it. Her eye twitched upon seeing the writing that had been added to the food section. “Thanks.” She put it on top of the pile of papers she had dropped. “Oh, can you ask some of your dragon friends if they’d like to come? The people related to me don’t really approve of my relationship with Nate, but they’ll keep their mouths shut with dragons staring them down at the wedding.”
“You could always … not … invite them,” Tafel said. “Just because they’re related to you doesn’t mean they have to be a part of your life.”
Alice rolled her eyes. “But how am I supposed to let them know I’m happy despite their protests?”
“I guess if that’s what you want your wedding to stand for…,” Tafel said and scratched her head. “But yeah, we can ask Gloria and Ramon to come. They’re baby dragons, and they love anything new. I bet they’ll be ecstatic to hear they’ve been invited to a wedding, and there’s no way their parents will let them go unaccompanied.”
Alice raised an eyebrow. “So, that’s a yes to dragons? I’m guessing they’ll want bear meat as well?”
“Probably,” Tafel said. “Although, some of them only eat moonlight.”
Alice nodded. “Alright,” she said. “I’ll be sure to commission a few quests for bears. If I sticky it on the mission board at the adventurers’ guild, I bet I’ll have more meat than the dragons can eat by the time of the wedding.”
“Abuse of power,” Tafel said while coughing. She smiled upon seeing Alice’s glare. “Don’t look at me like that. I’ll definitely bring dragons for you to terrorize your relatives with.”

Humanity endures. The phrase is not only an informal slogan of the reformed United Nations, but a rallying cry the world over. Even in the face of extermination, we struggled, we fought, and we endured. But just how close did we actually come? In our darkest hour, how many steps separated our species from oblivion? And are we even safe now? Were the mistakes made by earlier generations really so obvious? Or are they only so blatent when we look back with the advantage of hindsight? If so, what horrors might be staring us in the face even now that no one has the foresight to prevent?
