《Demon's Journey》Chapter 30

“Owen!” Raea shouted and tackled him. “I thought you were dead.” Tears formed in her eyes. Carmella and Gerome stood on either side of the two angels. Gerome scratched his head, while Carmella eyed Palan who had his arms across his chest. The first sun was just beginning to set, the trees casting long shadows on the ground.
Owen extricated himself from Raea’s embrace and glared at Palan. His armor was caked in a layer of dirt. He snarled. “The hell was that?”
Palan tilted his head. “I’m not sure what you’re talking about.”
“The poison!” Owen shouted. “Everyone died because of you!”
Gerome and Carmella took steps back as Owen marched forwards with his lance in hand. Palan snorted and unsheathed the two axes on his back. “You’re still alive aren’t you? Maybe I should rectify that.”
Raea’s face blanched. “Stop! Please,” she said and grabbed Owen’s arm. “What do you mean?”
“Your demon ran away and scattered poison over the whole battlefield,” Owen said and spat on the floor. “If I reacted a second slower, I would probably be dead.”
Carmella and Gerome nodded. Gerome cleared his throat. “I actually ran away with Carmella when I noticed Palan climbing a tree. Well, it was more like Carmella dragging me away,” he said.
“I had a really bad feeling,” Carmella said and nodded.
Palan shrugged. “I killed the greater demon and all the lizardmen. What’s the issue?”
“The issue is you killing everyone else,” Owen said and pointed his spear at Palan, jerking his arm out of Raea’s grip.
“They would’ve died to the greater demon anyway. It would’ve endlessly regenerated as long as the blood around it was pure,” Palan said as he knocked the spear away with his axe. “Everyone was resolved to give their lives for the mission, no?”
“Palan,” Raea said and furrowed her brow. Her lips quivered. “Did you really?”

“I told you I was going to,” Palan said and snorted. “It’s not my fault you didn’t stop me; I took your silence as an approval.”
“I was unconscious!”
“Not my problem. If I didn’t do it, you would be dead,” Palan said to Raea before making eye contact with the other angels. “All of you would be dead. If I had the chance to do it over, then I would make the same choice.” Carmella bit her lip before nodding and walked over to Palan with her lance lowered. She stood next to him and turned around to face Owen, Gerome, and Raea.
“He tried to kill you,” Owen said and glowered at Carmella. The wavy-haired angel shrugged and planted her lance into the ground, leaning against it. Gerome drew his lips in a line before he sighed and also walked over to Palan’s side. Owen’s eyes narrowed. “You too?”
Gerome scratched his head as his eyes flickered towards Carmella. He let out a weak laugh, but didn’t say anything. Raea bit her lip and hung her head, staring at her feet as Owen’s hand tightened around his lance. Palan raised an eyebrow. “Why are you two here?”
Carmella hummed and brushed her white hair behind her ear. “I feel as if fighting against you now would result in my death,” she said as her face warped into a bitter smile. “Honor doesn’t really mean much when you’re dead, right?”
Gerome nodded. “I’ve decided to follow Lady Carmella, no matter what choices she makes,” he said, his face glowing a deeper hue of red than usual.
“Following that demon will only lead to your death,” Owen said. Raea’s body trembled as she raised her head.
“Now is not the time to be fighting amongst ourselves,” Raea said with her brows furrowed. She spoke in a low voice, but everyone heard her clearly. She looked at Owen and took in a deep breath. “As an angel of patience, I have already forgiven Palan for what he has done.” A bitter smile appeared on her lips. “I have already grieved and found my resolve earlier. Truthfully, I already suspected something like this happened, but I did not want to admit it. What has happened has already happened, and nothing I do can change that. The best thing we can do is to continue forward and not let their sacrifices be in vain.”

“You cannot be serious,” Owen said. His voice quavered as his lance trembled in his hands. “They’re dead: Karl, Max, James, Talin, Micah. Your guards who have followed you since you were a child, they’re all dead, poisoned to death by the demon in front of you, and you want to forgive him?” Tears formed in the corner of Raea’s eyes as Owen gazed at her.
Palan snorted. “Cut the crap,” he said as he raised the axes in his hands. “Did you want me to wait for the greater demon to hack them into pieces before I applied the poison? If you want to be mad at someone, get mad at Ishim for sending us out here. Or get mad at Raea’s parents. It’s not my fault your friends were completely incompetent.”
“Raea,” Owen said with bloodshot eyes, ignoring Palan. His voice was gruff as he fell to his knees. “Please punish him. He must be punished for what he’s done. I can feel our companions’ souls crying out to me in my heart. They want justice for what happened. We could’ve killed the greater demon if we worked together, but he”—Owen pointed at Palan—”denied us that chance!”
Raea shook her head as tears flowed down her cheeks. “I can’t,” Raea said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I, too, am at fault. What right do I have to judge Palan?” She touched Owen’s cheek with her hand. “You have to forgive him too or the unrest in your heart will fester and consume you.”
Owen let out a hollow laugh as he lumbered to his feet. “I will never be able to forgive him,” Owen said as he turned away from Raea. He trudged towards the forest, heading in the direction of the battlefield. “Never.”
“Owen,” Raea said and frowned as she touched his shoulder. Owen twitched and brushed her hand aside. “Where are you going?” Raea’s voice trembled.
“To bury them.”
Raea bit her lip while turning around. She saw Palan sheathing his axes while Carmella and Gerome stared at Owen’s back. Palan turned around, gesturing for the angels behind him to follow. “Let’s go, Raea. You’ll get poisoned if you touch the corpses.”
Raea stood in the center of the field, watching Owen and Palan walk further and further away from her in opposite directions. Her brow was furrowed as she yelled, “Stop! Both of you, please!” Her body glowed white and chains made of light shot out from behind her, enveloping Owen along with Palan’s group. The chains tightened and shrank, dragging everyone towards Raea before stopping right in front of her.
“You couldn’t have done this in the battle?” Palan asked as his body futilely struggled against the white restraints.
Raea shook her head, causing beads of sweat to roll down her face.
“You really have forgiven him,” Owen said and sighed.
Raea nodded. “We have to work as a team. I want Palan and Owen to hug each other and truly mean it. I don’t care how long it takes. Until Owen and Palan are best friends, we won’t be moving from this spot,” she said and closed her eyes. “I am serious.”
Palan frowned and asked Carmella, “How long does it take for an angel to die of dehydration? I don’t believe he can outlast me.”

Thief of Time
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Book 1: The Legend of Tot Synopsis: Claud Primus, a self-declared master thief, has a simple goal. To live forever. It's a rather easy task, for miraculous objects called lifestones are able to extend one's lifespan. These lifestones are best found in the treasuries of nobles, lovely resorts that Claud pays a visit to every so often. Unfortunately, one of those nightly visits go awry, and Claud is forced to escape with just a single lifestone and a box in hand. Normally, that's when things die down. The guards yawn, the gates close, and the night continues. But this time, the night isn't that forgiving. A dozen schemes result in the murder of someone important, and with a convenient scapegoat — Claud — at hand, it doesn't take long for him to be framed as a heinous criminal, wanted for the indirect murder of someone high up...and it just gets worse from there. Book 2: The Moon Lords' Rise Synopsis: As ordered chaos sweeps across Licencia, Claud leaves for Julan Barony, intent on making some profits there. Accompanied by the erstwhile heiress of Julan, a fellow member of the Moon Lords, the two plot against the barony's wealth...as well as a promise to bring about its downfall. Meanwhile, back home, the Moon Lords have busied themselves with digesting their gains. Eyes, however, are beginning to turn to this proverbial fish in a small pond. The fishermen are coming. When they cast their hook, what will Dia and the others do? Book 3: Murders under the Moons Synopsis: In the sleepy town of Nachtville, where Claud and Lily are forced to stop at, a set of nasty murders occurs. Victims scream out in fright, before a spear falls from the sky to end their suffering. Cowed and cautious, the master thief and his partner slink in the shadows, their objective that of home... A new task, however, has fallen on Dia. With a trusty helper at her side, she has to set off towards Nachtville itself, to solve the mystery Claud had abandoned. Faced with an enemy whose sole skillset is geared towards killing, how will they succeed? And what dark secrets will they find? Book 4: In the Dark of the Moons Synopsis: The year has ended. The four months of the full moons will soon be followed by two months of the new moons. Duke Istrel's ascension is around the corner. Amidst this political upheaval, Count Nightfall, Licencia's strongest defender, has been called away. The Moon Lords' largest task yet — to protect Licencia in the absence of its ruler — has begun. And yet, trouble is unrelenting. A distinguished personage, one that Claud fears, has been found dead in the county, his brains dug out and his body disemboweled. The inquisitors of the White Church have been dispatched to investigate and apprehend the murderer...as well as the person behind this puppet. Tormented by a call to fight, Claud directs his eyes out of the city, looking for the puppetmaster. Skulking in the shadows, the master thief will soon confront his greatest foe yet. A foe just like him. Book 5: Moonlit Tides and Darkened Seas Synopsis: A new era has begun. For the privileged, the sands of time dribble away for every passing moment, counting down to the arrival of a entity of mythical proportions. The night now harbours shadows and fog, and operatives of the Moons and the Dark clash in shadow. Claud, as usual, is investigating a spate of nasty disappearances in the city, but little does he know what these disappearances truly mean. And yet, a tide is coming. When it finally breaks, what will he do? Book 6: Secrets in Shadow Synopsis: The person behind a strike that would enter the annals of history flees his home, bringing with him the person closest to his heart into a new land and into a new world. Having left Istrel for the first time in his life, the two of them attempt to settle down in foreign lands, only to be caught in the middle of hostilities between two mighty powers grappling for dominion. Yet, none of that has anything to do with him. Following his desires, Claud eventually makes his way to the fabled Celestia Ruins, a fragment of another world. Bearing witness to truths he cannot yet comprehend, he returns from his exploration, a small break away from the machinations of destiny. One thing, however, is for certain. Destiny will not wait for him. Book 7: Reddest Rage Synopsis: Destiny churns on, heedless of mortal machinations, and Claud watches as the battlegrounds between the Moons and the Dark are drawn up. With the forces of the great Dark occupying Lostfon, Claud comes to a startling realisation — that he may have very well be a murderer of heinous proportions. Grappling with that realisation, he struggles to prepare for his Second Tutorial... Back in Istrel, Dia finds herself confronted with a perennial truth. Even in a time of writhing destiny, the machinations between nobles never cease to end — and unfortunately for her, the group once known as the Moon Lords are forced into dealing with a petty squabble between two counts. What they didn't account for, however, was the startling discovery they would soon make... And the shadow of the Red God's Holy Son behind it all. Book 8: Darkness Descends Synopsis: Nightmares haunt the horizon as Claud sinks and awakens from a seeming dream. What was once illusory begins to play out before him, in a way he cannot imagine. Dia, forced to wield arms, begins and ends a battle that opens her eyes to the vast dangers that lurk in this sundered world. Under the banner of humanity and divinity, she beholds the silent, forgotten protectors of Orb...but there is no forgetting the battle between the divinities. The Dark descends, the Moons writhe, and the horns of war blow once more. But this is not their battle. Not yet. Book 9: Moons Muster Synopsis: As more and more events fall into place, Claud finds himself desperate. Not for himself, but for the person who has turned into his world. Armed with the knowledge of a certain future, he approaches the only person that could possibly help him in his time of need, trading information for a promise of help. With that as solace, he returns to the grim task of understanding and seeking, revisiting an ancient, shattered fragment of another world...unleashing changes that he never knew was possible. Back in Istrel, Dia and the others must now navigate around a familiar spirit, who seeks to investigate the death of his master's Bearer. With them as prime suspects, the Seekers of Life must move carefully...but the Coloured Gods are not the only divinities eyeing them closely. The Moons, bristling from repeated defeats, are looking for new recruits, and the Seekers of Life are prime cannon fodder. Above all, destiny marches on, the unfeeling clock a warning to all. The Trial of Aeons will soon arrive. Book 10: Destiny Divine Synopsis: ??? Release frequency: one every few days or something, I guess. The Supernormal
In a world where fantasy has become everyday, one man stands against absurdity. The local Tower stomps through the streets. Any hedge could contain a witch. Walls regularly crumble, though none more often than the fourth. In the magical city of Blackpool, all ridiculousness is possible, and it takes everything for Jack Of All Trades to survive. Badly, at that. Perpetually late with his rent, he'll take up arms for any paying customer in order to fulfill his quest. His obstacles include polka-loving ghosts, card-game playing vampires, and the most vicious monsters of all: copyright lawyers. When he's joined by an arrogant magus and an insecure vampire, his life gets even more complicated, but no matter what kind of infuriating choose-your-own-adventure he finds himself on, one constant remains—his rent is due at the end of the month. On second thoughts, maybe he should stay in bed. The Supernormal isn't your average web-novel. It's an urban fantasy parody that saunters through a world full of the absurd, delighting in poking fun at popular media, widely-accepted ideas, and often itself. Story arcs only loosely connect through the characters, who are themselves slowly fleshed out as the story continues. Think of Discworld meets The Dresden Files meets Gintama. This novel won't be for everyone, but if it is for you, you're in for a hell of a ride.
