《The Legion of Nothing》Decisions: Part 5

I drove Haley to her home, but ended up staying for a couple hours after that.
I left there just before eleven, dropping off the car back at HQ, and making it home on time for curfew. Then I read a book for a few more hours, and went to bed around two in the morning.
I didn't fall asleep at school the next day, but I hadn't gotten enough sleep, making me more withdrawn than usual. I took notes, ate lunch by myself, and stayed away from people.
This had one practical result. I didn't know where any of my friends were going to be after school, making it hard for me to bum a ride home. That wouldn't ordinarily have been a problem except that it started to rain during the last period, and didn't stop when school let out.
All of which left me standing in the hall, looking out the front doors of the school, trying to decide if I should call someone to pick me up or just wait for the rain to stop.
People walked past me to buses waiting in front of the school, and across the street to the muddy parking lot.
While I scanned passing faces for friends, Chris stepped out of the crowd.
"Nick, are you waiting for somebody?"
"No. I'm trying to find a ride home."
He gave a bemused looking smile. "I'm stuck too. My car didn't start this morning so I rode my bike, but I don't want to ride home in this shit."
Looking him over, I decided I wouldn't ride home on a bike in his situation either. I doubted the jean jacket he wore would do a very good job keeping him dry.
"I was hoping things would let up soon."

"I wish. The forecast calls for rain from now till midnight. I checked it on my phone."
I looked toward the front doors, watching the rain through the glass. "So, what do you think is wrong with your car?"
"I'm thinking the battery, maybe the alternator. On the other hand, I might have done something stupid that's draining the battery. I didn't have time to check."
"What have you been doing to the car?"
"Just experimenting. I had a couple ideas..."
He started telling me about his ideas, and the conversation took off. Twenty minutes passed without me even noticing.
Sean's voice finally drew me back to reality. The majority of people had now long since left the school and Sean, Dayton, Jody, and a couple girls were the only people walking down the hall. Julie, the girl who had emailed a picture of Haley and I out to most of the school, was one of them. I thought I might recognize the other from when Keith tested people in the parking lot.
Sean's voice carried. "They're still out there. What we have to do is get famous enough that they won't have the nerve to make us disappear. Seriously, they bugged my house..."
As I looked over at them, Sean glared at me, lowered his voice, and kept on talking.
At that moment, I suppose I could have said, "You don't have to worry about it. The Cabal didn't bug your house. That was me."
It didn't seem like the right time.
Chris watched them pass with an expression that I interpreted as disgust.
When the front door shut behind them, and we were the only people standing there, Chris opened his mouth, stopped, and said nothing. Then he quietly said, "I know who the Rocket is."

My guts froze, but I managed to say, "How?"
"You were too good at helping me with Grandpa's stuff. No one figures out something that complicated in an afternoon."
"Just from that?"
"That and when I mentioned to Grandpa that you might help, he looked relieved. Also, when I thought about it, that bit with handing the ball over to the League."
I don't know what the expression on my face looked like, but he said, "Don't worry about it. I'm not going to tell anybody. I just wanted you to know I knew."
"Thanks, and don't take this badly, but I think I've got to get better at hiding it."
"Easy. Don't fix supervillains' equipment."
"Right. I --" I was going to arrange getting the ball back to him. Even as I began, I thought better of doing it right there, and then my phone rang.
I pulled it out of my pocket, noticing two things immediately -- that it was nearly an hour after school had ended and that Vaughn was calling.
"Nick, this is bad. I went into my family's house's uh... really big basement, and someone's been down there. Can you get over here? I've already got Cassie."
"Can you pick me up? I don't have a car, and I'm still at school."
"I'm sure someone can pick you up." Distantly, I heard him say, "Cassie?"
"Wait," I said. "I just thought of something. Haley's not working. She can probably bring me."
"Right. And she might be useful too."
After we hung up, I made a mental note to put "new communications system" higher on my list of projects. I didn't think we'd said anything dangerous, but just about anybody could eavesdrop on a cell phone.
"Hey," I told Chris. "I think I had an idea about how to get you home."

The General Core {The Sphere}
The life cycle in the Sphere is on the brink of collapse because one of its elements, the Dungeons, have been exploited too much by the mortals. The group who created the Sphere already tried and failed with several modifications, because the original computer-like dungeon cores are too inflexible to handle changing approaches. So they try another type of solution – taking souls from other worlds to try to find a solution before the Sphere Cycle breaks down completely. The General was one of the best soldiers of his world, rising from the ranks of a private through Officer School to the highest command with honors. But when his world faced a zombie apocalypse, even that was not enough and he had to make the ultimate sacrifice. Now he is asked for a repeat performance of planning and controlling a dungeon and its spawns in a world that he knows nothing about… But what is the Sphere really? What is that [Xenotic conversion] he has to go through to even enter the Sphere? Something is really strange and he will have to find out what is going on to get to his promised rewards – whatever they will be. Being a soul in a dungeon core means that the General has better chances of finding hints to the truth about the sphere – a knowledge that would help him survive. And no, the sphere is NOT a virtual reality – the key to its secrets is the place where it was physically constructed (Author’s hint). This is a dungeon core story - but there are quite a number of things that I will do differently than common to those stories. 1) I will describe the floors when they are explored, NOT when they are build. Yes, that will mean it will take longer to get to those parts - but I think describing floors both when they are build and when they are explored destroys quite a lot of chances for suspense when adventurers enter the dungeon. After all, if you as the reader already know where the traps are, then you can't really be surprised when the surfacers encounter them. 2) How the world works (and how not) is an integral part of the story, so it will be explained I'm a world-builder first and the Sphere is NOT a regular world (as hinted in the synopsis above). Things will work differently than in your 08/15 default dungeon core stories - as the General and Gunny have already learned in the second arc (and more of that is already scheduled for the next weeks (July/Aug 2019) when the Sky Arrows continue to explore and evaluate that strange dungeon) If you don't like these premises, then I'm sure you'll find a lot of other Dungeon Core stories more to your liking. But if you are interested in more than "Dungeon builds another room and corridor in medieval earth" and are not afraid of a longer and slower story, then go on. I have two more stories in the Sphere, although they both have lower priority than this one: Shaleen the Wanderer (Adventurer, NSFW) (currently on hold after some chapters) Info's on the Sphere (System Docu and Short Stories) (irregular updates when needed) Current Status reports have been moved to a new discord server: https://discord.gg/EaHkXCfm9y

The Magitons
Book 3 of the Universe Series This novel continues the adventure from the previous novel, Ocean of Dreams. Each novel is meant to stand alone. Widhbo ( pronounced "wee bow") is a MC who will be in each of the six novels in the main series. The starship Sora had been hurtling through space using its FTL propulsion system toward the Dezba star system for over a decade since leaving the planet Beldora of the Hellsaxe system. The Sora had crash landed on Beldora over a century earlier carrying a couple of aliens from another dimension. The ship came from the Borrugal Realm, a band world associated with what was known as the Tor Galaxy, what we call the Milky Way. Human life on Beldora was never the same. Under the influence of the alien known as Widhbo, Beldora was catapulted from the steam age to the space age. The majority of the scientific advances on Beldora were attributed to the leadership of a brilliant man, Jejliard Castonea, who was secretly manipulated by the alien, Widhbo. When rapid advances in technology inadvertently led to a nuclear war, Jejliard decided to evacuate his family, friends and co-workers on the Sora. The plan was to find a new habitable planet and rebuild civilization until they could safely return home. Much to his despair, Jejliard’s family and friends opted to stay on Beldora to ride out the war underground. Even the other alien, Gengor, stayed behind. Borrowing technology stored in the archives of the Sora, Widhbo managed to transfer the personalities of those staying on the planet into digital storage units known as magitons which could survive indefinitely in cold, sterile space. Living crew members who elected to stay on board the Sora were also uploaded to ensure immortality for everyone in case their life support systems failed en route. Widhbo sought to design a cyber paradise for everyone inside their virtual worlds, but things never go as planned where Widhbo is concerned.
