《(Indefinitely paused) The Stone-hearted Enchanter》Chapter Two: Into the Depths (2.6)

After surviving the essence explosion Capra considered that one unexpected explosion was enough for a day, so he careful crouched his way over to the stone leaf and stopped a meter away to observe it.
...
The leaf looked… common. Other than its oddly grey color and larger than normal size, it looked like any other leaf. It didn’t radiate magic power, and it didn’t seem like it would explode anytime soon, so Capra inched a little closer. Nothing happened, so he went closer still.
No reaction.
Capra decided that the leaf was safe to pick up so he extended his hand towards it.
Woosh
"Ah!"
All of a sudden the leaf lifted off the ground, frightening Capra so much that he shot back like an arrow and hid behind a tree…
“...”
After a few seconds he wondered why he didn’t hear any explosion and poked his head out from behind the tree. The leaf had moved a little, but it was mostly in the same place.
“Was it a defensive measure?” Capra thought.
Woosh
Suddenly a gust shot through the forest, and the leaf flew up. It gently collided with the trunk of a tree and stayed pinned there until the wind completely ceased. Then it slowly fell back to the ground.
“...”
Capra stared… he was glad no one was around to see how he had panicked. Seeing as the leaf didn’t seem to be shooting off any more essence Capra inched closer and picked it up.
System Notification: You have obtained [Essence Forged Leaf (Stone)] x 1.
[Stone Forged Leaf]:
A common leaf indigenous to the [Sinking Depths] region. It has been saturated with stone essence beyond its bearing capacity, but managed to survive. It is a unique material, the first of its kind.
Weight: 0.01 kg
“A unique material?”
It just looked like a leaf with an expensive dye job.
“Is this a joke?”
Capra played with the leaf in his hands. He tried to bend it, and it bent like a leaf. He tried to twist it, and it twist like a leaf. After some hesitation, Capra decided to try to break it. His hands tugged at the leaf on opposite ends, pulling with all the strength he could muster, and...

The leaf didn’t break.
“...”
“What?”
He tried again, still nothing…
“Let’s try something else...”
Capra pulled out his skinning knife and raised it above the leaf, he then stabbed down at it gently...
Clink.
The dagger struck the leaf and bounced off.
“Clink?”
Capra raised an eyebrow and struck again.
Clink.
“...”
Capra struck twice more with more power, Clink. Clink! But the leaf remained pristine.
“...”
“Is the weapon too weak?”
The skinning dagger could hardly be considered a weapon, but it actually did the same amount of damage as the standard issue dagger given to rogues at the start of the game, and those could pierce through low level leather armor easily… yet it couldn’t pierce through the leaf.
Apparently the stone essence had made the leaf very, very durable.
“What are its limits?” Capra wondered.
…
After a batch of tests which included launching a chaos bolt at the leaf, drenching it in water, jump-stepping on it, and stabbing it some more, Capra found that the leaf was extremely resistant to the elements and physical damage.
It didn’t take long for him to see the utility of the leaf. Almost immediately after his tests Capra started to gather fallen leaves. He picked up close to 50 of them, then he started essence siphoning rocks.
…
Due to his mana regeneration Capra had to take a few breaks while gathering stone essence, but after a few hours he collected enough stone essence to enchant the leaves.
He quickly got to work.
He didn’t begin by enchanting the leaves, instead he pulled out a needle and some thread. One of the things Capra had noticed about the stone leaf was that it was very difficult to use as a material unless he had some sort of binding agent — which he didn’t. However, with a little bit of prep work that problem could be easily solved.
...
The needle moved quickly in his hands and the thread followed. The leaves were pieced together one by one, and soon they took the shape of a vest. Capra added long sleeves, a hood, and lastly he extended the length of the bottom of the vest to turn it into a robe.

“Enchant.”
...
Like the items he had enchanted before, the leaf started to float and then stopped once it rested stabley above Capra’s hand.
System Notification: You are in possession of essences. Would you like to use some to enchant [Common Leaf]?
Y/N
Capra immediately selected yes. He then skipped through the essence selection and chose stone.
...
A few minutes passed.
The leaf was slowly absorbing the stone essence. It still had a lot of green left, but it was slowly turning grey.
...
A few more minutes passed, and by now the leaf was completely grey. It trembled and the absorption rate multiplied tenfold, but Capra didn’t panic, this time he was prepared.
Instead of trying to force all of the essence into the leaf he guided as much essence away from the leaf as he could, siphoning it back into his own essence reserves. This proved to be very effective.
The absorption rate began to slow down, and when the last of the stone essence was gone the leaf stopped asborbing.
System Notification: You have successfully enchanted [Common Leaf]. Enchanting Proficiency: +2
A smile lit up Capra’s face and he grabbed another leaf and got to work.
…
Roughly five hours later Capra finished enchanting each individual leaf, he even took the liberty to enchant some thread making it super durable, then he started to piece together the leaf robe using his enchanted materials.
He'd already done it once, so re-assembling the robe was easy work. Within 15 minutes Capra was done, and the resulting product left him speechless.

The robe he made was so strong that Capra could practically smell the money rolling in… but then again he remembered how long it took to make it, and he thought better of trying to mass produce it.

When the Change occurred, humanity suddenly found itself with superhuman constitutions and the ability to use mana. All the government leaders had known about it beforehand and had made an announcement, so there was little strife and instead excitement to loot the dungeons that the Change had created. Kyle Anders was incredibly excited when he saw his starting skill, called Exponential Mana Regeneration, but his excitement quickly waned when he realized it was almost useless with his starting mana pool of twenty. He had nearly given up hope on being a mage when his family got him a new skill for his 18th birthday. Suddenly, with his mana pool expanded because of the skill, Kyle’s mana regeneration shot through the roof. But while humanity worked hard to loot dungeons and increase their skills and stats, Change was coming, and peace cannot last forever. The story is currently on haitus. (This story is a work in progress. As the first story that I have ever written, the beginning, especially the first ten chapters or so, needs heavy editing. I have decided to continue writing the story instead of going back and editing the beginning. I hope that despite all its flaws you will still find my story enjoyable.)

Greene's Monthly Contest
most writers don't have enough recognition. most of them only win awards based on the general aspects of a story; genre or theme, judged by the same things, not appreciating the genius behind the chapters. same awards, same results.--and we disagree with that.
