《A Fungal Dream》Chapter 54. Judged

The Giant floating before me snapped his fingers appearing on a two-dimensional blue screen.

“First, an introduction for those who don’t know him. Darwin Tim Right, before known as Phil Smith was an experiment made with dark magic and necromancy. After escaping his captives, he used his knowledge to understand himself and the world, becoming a Life Scholar. Through his experiments, he managed to create several points and an entirely new species, called kayeri that might prove a danger to the current ecosystem of the world as the mortals know it.”

The people on their thrones whispered between each other.

“This meeting is held to decide the future of this species and the limitation we need to impose upon Darwin Tim Right.”

“Isn’t it obvious?”

One of the small thrones floated slightly forward, on it was a beautiful woman with brown skin and a red dress.

“He is a threat to that world. Let's just take him and all that species off that rock and put it on a planet that can handle them.”

The giant shakes his head.

“He is one of the Apostles. He is meant to be there, in the end, taking the survivors to his garden so that they may see the end and birth of the new world.”

“Wait, sorry what?”

I raised my hand so that the giant could see me.

“What future are you talking about?”

“Right, you haven’t read it yet. Each Apostol, be it at the side of dark or light, has a role to fulfill. Since you heard of it, I shall show you.”

A piece of the blue screen detached from the rest and transformed into my own

[

-and as Death collects the soul of the deceased, the Thirteenth Apostle, Putrefaction may follow. His green hands and a swarm of flies will end the rebirth of all things and devour the warriors of the Holy War. By his hands, the corps of the world will be cleansed and returned to the earth, so that the foundation of a new world may be built. Those who hid from the reaper will be forgotten and forgiven for their sins, as he will bring them to the garden of flies to witness the birth of the new order and may witness its end when the Fourteenth Apostle arrives, bringing this world into nothingness.

]

When I was done reading the screen disappeared from my eyes.

“That’s it?”

My future is being the janitor of a world which will be snuffed out from existence anyway? There must be more than that! For crying aloud, I created a fucking race out of mold!

“This prophecy is written into the stars and is bound to happen. As long as you possess the class Apostle of Putrefaction, you will do that.”

“Till I have the class. That's what you said! It means that I can get rid of it! What do I need to do?”

“…This isn’t the subject of our discussion today.”

“Wait! I-“

“SILENCE!”

With a simple word, my voice was gone. No matter how much I tried to scream, no sound escaped from my throat.

No, no, no, no, NO! MY VOICE! BASTARD, GIVE IT BACK!

I raised my left arm at the giant and without thinking I made my inbuilt crossbow appear.

The arrow was about to be released, hitting the giant directly in the eyes when-

Poof!

One of the entities from the thrones appeared next to me and grabbed my arm, breaking it into pieces with only its hands.

“That’s a terrible idea. Try that again and I will pulverize your head next.”

I kept ‘eye’ contact with this guy, trying to remember his face, but the only thing I could identify was the axe hanging on his hip.

In pain, I slowly nodded.

The god squeezed my arm before letting it go, returning to his throne.

Grinding my teeth in pain, I fell to my knees, holding the mangled remains of what used to be my arm, screaming absurdities in my mind.

The giant didn’t seem to notice me and continued speaking.

“Now then let the meeting begin.”

??? POV:

Before the gates of the mansion where War and Putrefaction, a carriage arrived, drawn by horses as white as the new snow.

The moment it stopped before the mansion, servants lined up on both sides of the paved passage to the door, their heads bowing in a perfect 90 degrees.

Slowly the doors of the carriage opened, and several people walked out of it.

The first one was a young youth dressed in an all-white coat and boots, with silver buttons. His hair looked like melted gold and there were literal sparkling stars in his eyes. As he walked

Behind him came an eight-year-old girl in a white summer dress and a straw hat, smiling radiantly.

Following her was a young woman, in white ceremonial robes, holding onto a majestic staff made from pure gold, with a richly decorated cross embedded into its top.

Ending the line came a middle-aged man, dressed in a black suit, with a black coat, and a black hat.

His eyes and hair were dark as the pit itself, and it felt like he made the shining sun dimmed by its own presence.

The group walked to the doors of the mansion where a man with an impressive mustache was waiting for them.

“Welcome! Welcome to our humble residence, envoys of the church!”

The man bowed so deeply that his head almost touched the ground.

The youth kept smiling and bowed slightly before the man.

“It is an honor to meet you! I have been looking forward to this meeting for a long time.

While the middle-aged man and the youth exchanged pleasantries, the man in the black suit looked up to one of the windows of the mansion.

Behind at the furthest of the top, he saw an elegant woman dressed in red smiling at her.

*****

This meeting was going on for so long that I lost my entire interest in it, even when they were discussing my own life.

At first, I tried to fix my arm, by using the body’s parts, but they put some sort of barrier around it, blocking me from doing anything.

At least I could observe something interesting. From the chest of the body, the mold crystal grew out, ruining the whole thing.

It must have absorbed the nutrition of the body, growing without any control.

I might need to add some limiters, it’s lucky for me not to be in that thing's head when that happened.

So, while the mighty gods were whispering between each other I was lying on my floating floor piece and was murmuring songs to myself.

I even started to make my own, but I only had the refrain which I had been repeating to myself for a while.

-

I’m the first to do it, the first to build it.

I have the blueprint,

My children, new humans

It’s time to hear the music.

You will see the world slowly changing.

All the people are raging.

Hear the cheers of the brothers

Here are the words of the Father

It's still a little rough around the edges but it’s better than nothing. If only I had an instrument with me then I could give it a good beat.

“ A decision has finally been made.”

I looked up at the giant good, who looked down on me.

“We decided the following. The race kayeri may stay in this world but some limitations need to be imposed on them.”

The giant lifted his right index finger, making the blue screen appear.

“Kayeri is now a permanent race of this world and will slowly appear in other worlds as well. They may keep most of their powers, but new limitations will be imposed on them. First, they are now bound to live underground. They can only leave the surface once it rains, or a red eclipse appears. Your species are forbidden from using magic, but they will receive their own powers. Humans cannot be converted into full-blown kayeri anymore, but we shall allow you to create the first pure-blooded kayeris, from which your species will be evolved from. Any questions?”

“…”

“…Sorry. forgot about that.”

Suddenly my voice came back.

“I-I ask ye, mighty gods is this… divine decree is immediate, or I may prepare my flock for this change.”

You may wonder why I was speaking like that. Well after I calmed down, I started to think. These were the creatures that governed the entire world, maybe even more than that. Getting on their bad side is pure suicide so I have to swallow my pride for once and kiss ass.

“The change will happen slowly. It will give you ample time for you and your people to be gone. Also, you are forbidden from creating a body like that. We will make sure that it won’t happen again, and you shall be severely punished.”

“…As you wish, oh mighty gods of creation.”

“…Still, as the creator of an entirely new race and we are limiting it, we shall… give you something. To ease the change.”

As the giant said these words, the word slowly changed around me, returning me to my lab, my arm healed and good as new.

“The fuck?”

As I looked around making sure that everything was the same as before, notifications popped up before my eyes.

[ Skill [Plague Berserker] been changed into [Rot Embodiment]]

[Skills [Weapon Alteration] and [Armor Alteration] been received and embedded into skill [Rot Embodiment]

[Title received: [Father of New Race]

[Error.]

Before I could answer what was happening, several notification screens appeared, having unknown characters on them.

This swarm of notifications flew in the direction of my room and assembled themselves into the vague shape of a man.

“Who are you?”

The figure didn’t say anything, instead, he pointed to one of my tables.

On it, several red notifications showed up, before disappearing, leaving something behind.

When I looked at the figure it was already gone leaving nothing behind.

I walked to the table and looked at its content.

One was a letter, written on a piece of paper with red ink and a bundle of rags.

Slowly I unbundled the thing, revealing its content.

What the hell is this?”

There were two things.

One was a golden mask, similar to the one I had when I first arrived in this world, but this one had symbols drawn on its surface, made in a way that looked like tears flowing down from its eyes, with a giant cross in the middle of its forehead.

The other one was a pair of mismatched gloves, the left one white and the other one black.

“This is… creepy.’

I picked up the paper and started to read the letter.

Dear Darwin Tom Right,

You may not know me but I am an avid admirer of your work and achievements. Meeting you today was one of the best days I had in this century, and I may say that it is horrible how the others are treating you.

A man of your wisdom, knowledge, and expertise, deserves the recognition he deserves. Your latest invention, which reanimated the body, even if it self-destructed during the meeting, has potential that the others might not see.

So, in good fate and in the hope of collaboration, I am sending you these three gifts. one of which is a prayer that allows you to come to me. I recommend writing it down somewhere safe since a lot of people wish to find me. The other two gifts are quite special as well.

The mask belonged to a high-ranking member of the Priesthood of Nergal, who was tasked with regularly sacrificing offerings for their lord. It might not be as strong as the gifts that God gave to his champions, but it still has power that can be useful for you.

As for the gloves, they are from another church. One that was forgotten by time. They still hold quite interesting power although they have diminished greatly.

I hope we will see each other soon.

With all regards,

Mr. Gift, Kings of Crossroads.
