《Artisan》Act 1: At Least Spiders Can't Fly part 4

In a way, Justin wasn't all that surprised. It wouldn't be much fun for the villains if the prison system wasn't a little bit porous. Justin had never considered playing a villain, but he was aware there were whole quest-lines related to running and escaping prisons, and the worst supervillains would find themselves 'blanked' or 'spun' eventually.
The choice between a mind-wipe death or being exiled to the death-world dimension would be an easy decision for Justin, bring in the brain-scrubber, time to start over. There hadn't been much in the promos about the alternate earth which was affectionately titled the Justice Zone, but what there was sounded horrifying to Justin, and he was just grateful that the only super powerful enough to reach it was an NPC named Vortex that worked for the government.
Populated and run by the worst of the worst, it sounded like a post apocalyptic free-for-all, wilderness, guns, superpowers and monsters. Justin was just glad that he'd never see the place, and that escape was a near impossibility. Which now that he thought it, sounded a little like tempting fate.
The other consideration in Ku and Dragon's escape was that they were obviously still receiving help from the outside, and until the team managed to pull the whole mess up by the roots, or at the least cut off the head, Justin was sure the Michigan prison system would continue to prove about as water-tight as an old bucket.
Dropping into the Underground, he found one of Division's clones with his feet up on the table, reading a book. Given the time, Justin had intended to just leave a message for when the team arrived, but he supposed it made sense for Division to sleep his clones in shifts. The only question was whether Division himself could stay conscious while his prime was sleeping, and what happened to the clones while he was unconscious.
Justin was about to start asking questions when he remembered why he was there. He really was getting much better at avoiding distractions. Quite pleased with his progress, Justin spent a moment wondering if it was the meditation or control training that had helped. Maybe he could run some sort of test to see which had a greater impact on focus, but you couldn't run that kind of study with only one person, you'd need to have multiple people trying multiple combinations.

"Did you want something?" Division asked, breaking into Justin's thoughts. He was sure there was amusement on the older man's face and he wondered how long he'd been congratulating himself on his new focus.
He mentally sighed at his well-known and long standing inability to concentrate. His mother had always said that the only way to stop him trying to think about three things at once, was to put a puzzle in front of him. Justin remembered that she'd always blamed it on his gaming habits as a child, and he honestly wasn't sure if the expanded resources available as Kip were making things better or worse.
"Ku and Dragon are once again free from incarceration." He informed Division, getting straight to the point. He wasn't sure what response he'd expected, but a delighted grin certainly wasn't it. "Ku and Dragon. Supervillains." He expounded, in case Division was having a senior moment. Did you get senior moments in your forties?
Division's grin widened further. "I know, it was bound to happen. Ever since we got the info on Rasidae's warehouse, I've had the feeling that something was rottenin the state of Detroit, his being present for the bombing just confirmed that something was going on."
"Does not explain happiness." Justin prompted. Ignoring the strange reference to Detroit as a state.
"Ah, that's because you don't know that I had a tracker placed on Ku." Division said, his grin turning a little evil.
"What? How?" Justin sputtered slightly, a little surprised that he actually could sputter.
Super detention was highly regulated, with incredibly stringent checks on everything moving in and out of the facility. It would be no fun escaping if it wasn't a challenge after all. Justin hadn't really investigated, but he had absolutley no clue how he'd even go about gettin in, let alone back out.
"Shade introduced me to some friends," Division said, and for a moment he seemed slightly embarrassed.
"Same friends as past?" Justin asked, wondering if they were referring to the same friends that helped out in their initial ambush of Ku and Dragon.
Division nodded with a strange smile. "Sorry, they're Shade's contacts, I really can't tell you any more."

If he wanted details, which let's face it he did, it looked like Justin was going to have to up his surveillance on Shade and maybe Division too. He paused for a moment to consider if it was strange that that was his first thought rather than just asking SHade for more information. Probably, but he was ok with it.
"How to activate tracer?" He asked, getting back to the point.
"Ah, it's not exactly what you'd call technical." Division said, looking embarrassed again. "It kind of requires triangulation using specialist hardware." He lifted the book as if he was suddenly desperate to continue reading.
"Hardware?" Justin pressed, not letting him escape that easily.
Division sighed and dropped his book back onto the table. "Dowsing rods." He said. "The tracer was magical." He still seemed embarrassed, as if he'd been caught photographing fairies, but in the game world magic was just another type of science, a system of cause and effect. Justin had even considered asking Naiad for some pointers, it would be interesting to see if magic was a measurable phenomena.
"So," Division said, rising quickly to his feet. "I should really get on that." Justin watched him leave. He'd seemed fine around Naiad, but maybe Division had some issues with magic?
By the time morning arrived, Justin had settled on a design for incorporating aluminium composite throughout Shift's armour, plugged in to a storage capacitor in the small of his back which should work to siphon a charge away from his body. If something managed to get through the suit entirely then Shift was on his own. Justin had spent way too long investigating insulation options, but they would all restrict motion and ramp up the heat load by way too much.
He'd also taken some time to lay out an exo-frame for Division, and maybe Oscen? He'd have to remember to ask, though he could already see her having issues with how loud the motors were running. They currently sounded like someone zipping and unzipping a tent, and Justin wasn't sure how he was going to fit noise insulation into the already tight fittings. It was nowhere near finished, looking a little like a collection of pipes, pumps and wires. But it was nice to be even one step closer.
He'd already managed to get Revenant's chest and arm plates cooled, hardened, and ready for its silver coating. The helmet, however, had turned out to be a real pain. Justin's first attempt came out looking something like a riot helmet wearing a Halloween mask, and Justin had decided he really need to take produce a proper mould of Revenant's head to work from, and maybe investigate actual blacksmithing to see if there was some technique he was missing.
It wasn't like he needed to dunk Revenant's head in a bucket of plaster to get a mould, he'd already gotten a full scan of the team to aid in producing gear.
Thinking about the in-depth, and possibly overly-personal scans he'd taken of the team, and then 'forgotten' to mention. He recalled having scanned the fake dead Barrows during his trip to the morgue.
At the time, he'd had the idea that the man's identity might lead them to his killer. Now that they knew his killer was probably one of the transformed Jackals, was there really anything to be gained from identifying him?
Suddenly feeling guilty at such a dismissive thought, he had Era check for updates on the body, and was a little frustrated to find that the police had closed the case, happy to write the corpse off as the accountant Barrows, and move all the attention to investigating the bombing itself.
He was a little surprised that there was still an investigation to be ongoing, especially since the team had already solved it and handed over the culprit. It was pretty easy to discover the answer. Apparently the lizard man had suffered an 'accident' after agreeing to work with the DA.
Still, it wouldn't have hurt to mention their contribution. The team really needed to work on their PR.

Incursions
This blurb concerns Incursions book 1: Incarceration. If you could buy superhuman abilities, but they might kill you—or worse—would you do it? Ten years ago, in a world not so different from our own, people with powerful abilities appeared. The new powers were dangerous, dangerous to acquire—dangerous to have—dangerous to wield. World governments raced to find and eradicate the abilities and those who possess them while using the media to rule by fear. Whereas corporations sought to exploit the abilities for profit. Raz Owens was living the dream - a rising star at a job he enjoys, a girlfriend he loves, but it all comes crashing down when Raz disregards his late father's advice. He is pulled into a chaotic underworld of clandestine labs, shadow organizations, and super-powered criminals. Used as a human test subject in a place where few survive the day, he must last long enough to escape. His only advantage? A power that seems nearly useless—a heads-up display. Contains: monsters, violence, death, dismemberment, gamelit, superpowers, superpower consequences, good guys, bad guys, good guys who might be bad guys, bad guys who think they are good guys, good guys that might go bad, bad guys that might turn good, guns for hire, competence, incompetence, continence, incontinence, conspiracies, and some of what I just said wasn't true. This story is written in third person limited POV. That means you can expect to know many of the thoughts and inner dialog of one character, and only see the actions of other characters. This POV does include scenes without the main character, and thus the reader can and will know things the main character does not. Further, this means characters act on what they know, which is almost always less than the reader knows. Something else to know. These books do not hold your hand. If you're reading it and thinking "Gosh, why aren't 'they' doing some 'obvious' thing." Bad news. You probably missed something that explains exactly that. If you're seeking a light read that doesn't ask much of you as the reader, you're invited and very welcome to come on in, but this might not be the story for you.

Beyond Floating
Muse thought her life had ended twenty years ago because, well, it had. Existing aimlessly for two decades as a ghost, she finds herself yanked along in a rip-tide of strange events. Thrust unwittingly into the midst of a group of paranormal hitmen-for-hire led by a man named Isaac. Michael, a normally rational and righteous holy soldier of God, succumbs to revenge and hatred, sacrificing everything in the fight to destroy Isaac and everyone who associates with him. Muse, by virtue of her inadvertent association with Isaac, is on that list. This is actually my first 'finished' fiction that I've ever written, which I completed about 8 years ago. I dug it up recently and I'm posting it as I thought people here might get a kick out of it. So, take that for what you will. Chapters will be released daily at 6:00pm EST.
