Chapter 10 – Carnival of Rust

Hall observed them walking around satisfied. They just transformed the corpse of an innocent girl into an undead slave and they celebrated it. His rage boiled inside of him, but still he observed.

He clenched his fist, his nails digging into his own flesh, but still he observed. He grinded his teeth, his eyes spewing fire, but still he observed.

Until he heard them say their goodbyes. The mage logged off saying he would be back in one real life day, meaning 4 days game time. The other one, who looked like a rogue, told him he would call him on the phone so they could log in together.

Overhearing this made Hall grin. He would make sure he would greet them properly.

So he waited for their bodies to disappear after logging out and watched the goblins relax visibly after they were gone.

There were still two groups with four warriors, two undead beasts and a mage each outside the mine. He guessed inside would be a small army of undead and goblins.

It would be difficult, he still didn't have any real combat skills, so he would have to use his greatest weapon, fear.

With a rock he caused some noises and lured one of the groups deeper into the forest. It was simple, but effective. The dark magic seemed to have raised not only their strength but also their intelligence, a bit, as he heard the tallest goblin growl and was surprised they could speak that well.

"My group follow me... rest stay here... will look if surroundings clear...you watch entrance."

With that command one of the groups followed the noise caused by Hall. He lured them for several minutes until the sounds of battle wouldn't alarm the others.

Hall's plan was simple, he used his chains to entangle the feet of two goblins, while Lily bound the arms of the remaining two warriors to the ground. Thanks to her skill progress she was able to use four instead of three mana chains.

He marked the mage for death and used his Death to Everyone skill to put pressure on the whole group. Lily's song raised his willpower and increased the effect of his pressure.

While the mage shivered in fear Hall attacked the undead wolfs, dodging their claws and teeth, cutting into their rotting flesh with cold steel.

Every now and then he pulled his chains or used his Soul Distortion skill to confuse the two goblins and to keep them from fighting. When he was close enough he stabbed the mage who still shivered and threw manabolts that missed him by arm length. It wasn't enough to kill him as they all were pretty high level, but he was able to deal some damage.

After a few minutes he finally managed to kill the undead wolfs by decapitating them. The warrior goblins were roaring angry despite his soul pressure. They were angry they couldn't join the fight and struggled with the chains binding them.

Pulling on one of the chains, the entangled goblin was dragged over the ground. When it stopped in front of him he used soul distortion to confuse the monster. Within the moments it took the goblin to regain its senses it was already stabbed and cut a dozen times. Bleeding excessively its wild eyes dimmed and with a fatal strike Hall ended its struggle.

Now that his chain was free he started to thrash on the other goblin warrior he bound. Breaking bones and spraying blood with each slash he killed him within half a minute.

Without renewing the mana chains, Hall attacked the other two fighters while Lily shackled the mage with her skill. He kept fighting while using Mana Drain and dodging the clubs of the goblins.

He parried and retaliated. Dodged and stabbed. It took too long for his taste but soon enough the last warrior dropped dead to the ground. Now the mage was the only one left.

He trembled in fear, his comrades dead and in front of him a man he could do nothing against. But instead of killing the enemy outright, Hall kept draining his mana so he could fight without taking a break.

When all lay dead in front of him, cut, stabbed, smashed or decapitated, he took the loot and without hesitation approached the mine and dealt with the other group in the same manner. It was even easier than before and didn't even take him ten minutes.

You have entered Abandoned Sorian Iron Mine

When entering the mine Hall soon encountered another group and again he disposed of the goblins and undead monsters. If he was hit, Lily healed him and if they ran low on mana he drained it from the enemy.

It wasn't even a real fight, more like a beautiful choreographed slaughter as Hall mowed down the goblins with his chains and blades while Lily's beautiful voice underlayed every swing and every strike.

While moving farther inside the mine they met bigger groups of enemies, but that didn't stop him. Hall used his Hells Bells and his other fear inducing skills constantly, disrupting the enemies flow, destroying their balance, causing them to falter and fall.

Hall simply cut them down like he was death himself. His and Lily's level climbed slowly but surely. If he got hurt, Lily healed him and he drained mana so there was no need to stop. If his stamina fell too low he chewed some food and drank from his canteen while lying on the ground panting.

Because there were so many narrow passages he could use Lily's Tears of Heaven skill while he pinned down the group with his chains slamming into anyone who got too close, throwing them back. This way they could annihilate an incredible amount of enemies in a short amount of time.

Hall reached level 20 after a little less than one day of constant battle against monsters more than twenty levels above him. He had three more days left and planned to use every minute of it. The only break he would allow himself would be to eat and drink something in real life.

After Hall distributed his status points in strength and agility he continued to fight his way down into the earth.

Soon enough he found the first human undead. It was the girl from before. She was already far beyond saving, her eyes dull, saliva running down the corner of her mouth and her reaction to seeing him was nothing but a pitiful moan.

He clenched his fist again. Beside her was only one of the mage goblins. He watched Hall in surprise, but soon enough he regained his composure, sent the girl to attack and started to throw mana bolts at him.

Halls eyes still lay on the girl so he just lashed out with his chains. When the bolts hit them in midair the weak magic just dissipated as his soul energy wasn’t only impenetrable by physical attacks but could also block magic.

If he blocked it too close to his body, the resulting explosion would still hurt him, but because it was still a few meters away, it just vanished into nothingness.

Instead of raising his blades, Lily simply chained down the poor girl while Hall grabbed both chains.

With brutal force he threw them straight ahead. They flew like two arrows and penetrated the chest and abdomen of the goblin. He looked incredulous at the holes in his body and at the blood dying the floor beneath him. After a moment he dropped to his knees and died.

Hall barely noticed, instead he approached the shackled girl. The dress she wore was stained by her own dried blood and her shoeless feet were cut by the rough ground.

Her arms and legs were bound to the ground but her motionless eyes looked straight at him. Foam started to appear on her lips as she tried to bite him though he was still meters away.

When sensing her soul he could tell she suffered incredible pain as the darkness slowly clawed its way into her glowing essence. Grinding his teeth Hall took out his dagger, closed the distance between them and held her head down with one hand.

“I’m sorry little one. For all the pain you suffered, for all the torment and your tears. I promise you peace, it may not be much, but it’s all I can offer.” With these words he slit her throat and rammed the dagger through her back into her heart.

The two critical hits were enough to kill the girl, her level wasn’t high to begin with, even if the darkness that swallowed her gave her strength.

Hall still held her head, this time gentle and with care. He saw her soul be released from its shackles of darkness and only stood up after it found its way into the afterworld. ‘I have to ask Grim what happens with these souls.’

He gently placed her body into a corner as he had no time to properly burry her. From then on he frequently met undead humans. They were accompanied by more goblins than before, but he continued to slaughter them.

Lily got really quiet ever since they met the girl, though there was no need for her to talk, she and Hall both felt the same and each other’s company was enough to comfort them.

She put her emotions into her voice and sang for Hall, she sang for the girl and for every imprisoned and mutilated soul in this cruel place.

After two days the enemies became stronger but so did he. Because goblins were generally weak willed creatures his skills caused mayhem and he often slaughtered enemies even without resistance but also without mercy.

He saw what they did when he looked at the undead puppets, felt what they caused when he sensed their souls and he was in no mood to deal in mercy. No, cold revenge and brutal justice was his business.

He was judge, jury and executioner. His chains were the law, his blade was the path and death the only way out.

He thanked Grim for giving him this class over and over again, how else could he annihilate groups of mobs twenty level stronger than himself. He only needed hours to gain the same experience others needed days for.

Usually you would need a group of level 40 players to clear the mine. He did it alone thanks to his own abilities, his class and of course because of Lily.

After three days he was so deep down it became hard to breath, the fights became tougher and he had to take longer breaks between them.

He was almost level 30 now, his and Lily’s skills leveled up quite a bit and he finally reached what looked like the end of the mine.

Until now the mine was nothing more than a simple tunnel, around two meters wide with stone or earthen walls. Every now and then pillars were used to stabilize the ceiling. A couple of rooms were carved into the stone used as sleeping accommodations, storage rooms and dinner halls.

The mine was mainly lit by torches, candles and oil lamps but it still was mostly dark and gloomy.

There weren’t many valuable items, the furniture was cheap, the food bad and the tools crap.

The last hallway was different though, instead of crude rock the walls were covered in mosaics and polished, black marble. Artistic engravings in the marble showed eerie scenes of battle and brutal sacrifices. A few pulsating red lights along the corridor caused the shadows to come alive, devouring each other, creating appalling images.

The sickening hallway led Hall and Lily into a huge room. It was by far the largest in the whole mine, at least thirty meters long and twenty wide.

The room was covered in the black marble he saw before and was dominated by the stairs that began twenty meters into the room and lead to a giant black throne at the end of it.

Seated on this abomination of a throne in this nightmare of a throne room was a single man. At least that’s what Hall thought. It had two arms and two legs, but was at least a meter taller than him and he needed to double his own shoulder size to even come close to the giant.

He sat next to one of the pulsating red lights so Hall could see a dark plate armor, it looked just like the marble the throne was made out of. He even could see the countless engravings on the armor although he couldn’t make out what they pictured.

Though he wasn’t hiding it, Hall somehow couldn’t make out his face, it was like it was covered in black mist. He just sat there, unmoving, an eerie aura enveloping him.

Before entering the direful area there were runes glowing bright enough to alarm even the most careless person. When Hall stepped closer he could read them with his Sorian Language skill.

Sealed away in this cave lies a peril to the world, a menace to its inhabitants and a threat to all that is good.

A creature created by us but beyond our control. Once a man, now a demon.

If left alone it consumes those alive and devours their very souls.

Turn and walk away, beyond this threshold nothing but death awaits you.

But that wasn’t all, someone carved words beneath it into the wall. Not in the Sorian language but in a modern one.

After a long time of research I found a way to unseal the one shackled on his throne.

He needs the souls of the living, but as he is weak in his sealed state, he can’t rip them from their bodies.

I created magic that ties a soul to its host even after their death. If you use it you can control their bodies and let their souls be devoured.

It will take time and the sacrifices will be great and many, but you shall be rewarded greatly.

I myself am too old to gain anything so I hope you will benefit from my studies.

A word of advice, if the unsealing process, the feeding of soul energy, begins, don’t step into the throne room. Lead the undead puppets to him.

Every living being will awaken him in a weakened state. The dead will let him rest until he regained his lost strength to rule at his rightful place.

It seemed like the goblins found the magic to create undead puppets but probably stayed away from this room because their feared it too much or their life force wasn’t strong enough to wake the sealed man. Hall was very sure they wouldn’t be able to learn the Sorian runes and language but the research was probably written in a modern language.

After their intelligence was raised by the dark magic they figured out how to strengthen their forces with undead animals.

When players came along they probably thought they could gain great rewards by unsealing the demon and started to kidnap NPCs to sacrifice their souls. Hall showed a wicked smile while thinking about crossing their plans after what they have done.

As soon as Hall stepped one foot inside the bloodcurdling room he could feel the temperature drop instantly. The black mist around the man started to twist and twirl and red circles that could only be eyes focused on him.

Hall had to gather all his will and courage not to turn around and run, even Lily became pale like she was a Banshee again. Starting to shiver, she quickly grabbed his hand for support. “…what is…that?”

Hall could only shake his head, he had no answer. “I don’t know, but it’s evil, cold and dark. What have they done…? Still, we have to destroy it.” Lily swallowed and despite the fear in her eyes she nodded her head with determination.

They slowly approached the stairs when a roar came out of the shadows that hid the man’s face and made them freeze up instantly.

The roar changed into a sinister laughter, filling the silence in the room, resounding from the walls and the ground. “Welcome human, I am grateful to you for breaking my seal, was it you that fed me all these delicious souls?”

Hall clenched his fists and steeled his will. “No, I don’t know who or what you are, probably nothing but a failed experiment. Yet those fools still try to awaken you and in the process kill innocents and mutilate and torture their souls.

I woke you without finishing the unsealing process properly and I will kill you here and now. You won’t see the light of the sun ever again and you won’t lay your hands on another soul. I promise you this.”

Silence spread in the dark room when a hysterical, infernal laughter erupted from the sinister figure. “Lowly human, you are certainly entertaining, though I won’t allow anyone to mock me. My little puppets will rip you apart.”

The darkness around Hall started to move, moans and the rustling of clothes was hearable as dozens of figures slowly moved into the pulsating light.

There were so many. Men and women of all ages with dim eyes. Their skin in different shades of grey with rotting wounds in their decaying flesh. Most had barely any hair left while their blood stained clothes stuck to their appalling bodies.

The sight and the stench were vomit inducing and Hall had to clench his fist and grit his teeth. Not because he was scared, not because he was disgusted, but because he was angry.

Angry for what was done to those unfortunate people. Angry because he knew how their families must feel. It was just a game, it wasn’t real, but somehow it didn’t matter right now.

Using his soul perception he saw the mutilated and tortured souls of the humans, shackled to their corpses, coming out of the shadows. From their chests a stream of floating lights made their way through the room to the dark figure sitting on top of the throne.

Only a few souls glowed bright as most were drained for weeks or even months. Some were so dim they barely were visible in the eerily lit room.

The bodies containing the drained souls were barely able to move anymore and only staggered slowly closer to him. The few with brighter souls were quicker when they approached him baring their teeth.

Hall knew he had to battle the monster on the throne, so he couldn’t exhaust himself fighting the people even if he would like to send every soul away separately. He knew it would be enough to destroy their vessels, their rotting bodies, his Judgement skill would take care of bringing them peace in the end.

He didn’t bother with his fear inducing skills, they wouldn’t work on these mindless puppets and he could feel the man in front of him was a lot stronger than anything he faced until now.

He had to rely on his fighting skills and on his weapons, so he quickly apologized in his head to all the people around him and began to imbue his chains with his energy while he could hear Lily’s voice behind him starting a song, giving him confidence and promising support.

Hall let out a deep breath and started to swing his chains with incredible force obliterating three bodies with the first swing. Minutes and minutes went by while Hall swung his chains in circles, rotated them and smashed it into the groups of people.

It was a gruesome sight. The pulsating red light painted a picture in blood. Limbs were ripped from bodies. Heads splattered, chests crushed and bones shattered. Each one of Hall’s attacks was devastating, annihilating several undead slaves at once.

They might be swallowed by darkness and had a pretty high level, but their rotting bodies were weak and as Hall obliterated dozens and dozens within minutes he gained ridiculous amounts of experience.

When he could feel no more of the unfortunate souls around him he took deep breaths to regain his stamina. While Hall stood there unmoving he saw glowing lights around him slowly dissipating as the imprisoned souls finally regained their freedom and their peace.

He was surprised he didn’t get any fame points because before he got one or two every several kills. Though that was probably because it was a boss event. At least he reached level 30.

After several seconds he heard a grumbling sound originating from the top of the stairs.

“You are interesting human, destroying my fine little puppets so quickly while I am still so very hungry.”

Standing up he was even more frightening as another wave of pressure washed over Hall. He still didn’t even flinch, not giving the creature of darkness the pleasure of seeing him yielding to fear.

“Most impressive, others fled in terror or fell unconscious just from my presence and yet you stand defiant. You are worthy of knowing my name, the name of the one who will be your doom. I am Azmodan, but for you I am death.” His voice roared through the room covered in blood and rotten flesh as he walked down the stairs.

Any normal person would cower in front of this monster, but Hall started to laugh. His laugh cast away the wariness and the seed of fear inside Lily’s chest. He shook his head, still laughing causing Azmodan to stop a couple of stairs away from the ground.

He was now a lot closer and his presence was terrifying. The engravings in the black plate armor showed scenes of torture and executions. His face, now finally recognizable, showed only confusion after seeing the laughing Hall and then distorted in rage. “You dare mocking me human?”

Hall still chuckled and waved his words away. “Haha, no, it’s not that. Well, maybe a little bit. You know, I met death before and compared to her you aren’t even a fly. You aren’t worth calling yourself death and I will show you because the closest you will ever come to meet death itself is ME.

Now pay for your crimes.”

By now Azmodan was shaking with anger, he started to materialize a huge sword inside his right hand. It seemed to be made of shadows as darkness gathered inside his hand.

Before the sword was complete a chain rammed against his head, making him lose balance and his eyes spewed fires of wrath at the defiant human standing up against him.

“Human I will make you regret being born.” He raised his left hand throwing dark waves of magic against Hall without needing a second to cast.

Shaking his head again he slammed his chains against each wave, dispersing the magic without it ever reaching him. As the last waved approached him his aim was off and instead of dispersing it completely he just diverted it and it partially hit Lily who twitched as the dark wave hit her leg after she tried to evade it.

‘Crap!’ Hall was careless. It barely touched Lily and despite their resistance to darkness magic it caused significant damage. A frontal hit without any resistance might kill him.

While he shook off the damage, Azmodan approached him with incredible speed raising his sword and cutting down on him. He barely managed to dodge it and as the sword hit the ground an explosion of darkness destroyed the marble floor beside him.

The moment the shadow blade struck the ground, Hall flew past the demon that once was a man and rammed the dagger he pulled from his belt into Azmodan’s lower back.

Azmodan roared but the moment the dagger penetrated his black armor it was swallowed by dark mist. When it touched Hall’s skin it burned his hand that held the dagger, causing him to let go of it and scream in surprise after he took some damage.

Hall knew his worldly weapons wouldn’t be of use, so he grabbed his chains and swung the left one at the enemy to put some distance between him and the huge black sword.

Expecting it, Azmodan caught the chain as it was about to smash in his side and wrapped it around his hand. Grinning he exuded dark mist from his hand.

It slowly crawled up the chain, tainted the glowing blue light it emitted and caused excruciating pain to Hall. Azmodan started to grin infernally at Hall’s pain distorted face. “Feel my touch, because I will devour your soul, now bow before me and wither in agony.”

Hall’s knees became weak, his legs lost their strength and his breath became erratic.

From behind he heard Lily as she sang in her beautiful voice. He knew she would follow him into the dark, so even if it was only for her, he couldn’t fall here.

As his willpower and defiant, some would say stubborn, traits kicked in, his muscles bulged. He used his Blast Tyrant skill and with a roar his blue soul essence slowly was colored in a flame red tone, burning away the black mist.

Azmodan was now beyond confused and angry as his hand was burnt by Hall’s energy. “What are you mortal to be able to stand against my darkness?”

After a while his Soul Perception was finally able to read Azmodan’s soul properly. It was, as he expected, made up of pure darkness. Though his power was obvious as sensing it alone made Hall almost falter. It was a mass of twisting and twirling wickedness, an evil so abominable it threatened to swallow everything around it.

While Azmodan was still shocked at the ineffectiveness of his attack Hall used Soul Distortian although before he was sure it wouldn’t work.

The effect was negligible but the fact that it had an impact at all when used on someone of Azmodan’s strength, even if he was unprepared, was enough to throw Azmodan even more off.

Hall started to use Mana Drain because his mana was now below half as Lily still used her voice and the fight was already longer than it took him to take care of the undead puppets.

Azmodan noticed and started to roar again, trying to free himself, almost going insane at the thought of a mere mortal daring to take away his power.

While the second chain crashed into his armor again and again Azmodan slashed away at the chain that now forcibly entangled his left arm. He barely noticed the smashing against his side, his legs and his head as it slowly chipped away at his health.

After he finally managed to free himself he rushed Hall with his sword raised aiming for a one hit kill.

Hall barely managed to pull back his chain, catching the sword. But he wasn’t able to completely block the strike as the explosion of dark energy scorched his face, severely hurting him.

His health was down to half and although Lily tried to heal him, the incoming damage was too much for her.

Azmodan went into a frenzy and swung his sword at an insane speed only barely missing Hall with each strike. Hall couldn’t even think about retaliating as each strike left a trail of darkness that burned his skin even though the blade didn’t touch him.

His mark of death and soul pressure was useless and he slowly lost health as out of nowhere Azmodan threw a giant ball of pure darkness against him. Again he tried to disperse it with his chains and managed to take away the biggest part of the damage but the explosion its impact on the chain caused, threw him back two meters, forcing the air out of his lungs and causing dizziness.

With the last attack Hall’s health dropped below 10% and his last resort skill kicked in.

A surge went through him and his dizziness was blown away. He grit his teeth and was about to jump back to his feet.

Azmodan regained his composure as he saw the human lying in front of him, his skin scorched and his armor in tatters. His own health was still above half despite the dozens of strikes he received before and the mortal was close to death. He was sure of his victory now and enjoyed the picture in front of him. In his hubris he didn’t even notice the change in Hall after his skill kicked in.

Hall’s eyes had fire in them again and although he knew it wasn’t a great idea during a normal battle he didn’t have much of a choice. He grabbed his sword while Azmodan looked at him with hatred.

This time he filled it with his soul energy. Not with a blue, calm, pulsating light, but with a flaming red burning through the metal. When it was brimming with energy Hall jumped up and a lot faster than before he leaped at the monster in front of him ramming the sword deep inside his chest.

The black mist pouring out of the wound was overwhelmed by his raging soul energy that radiated from the sword.

Azmodan just stared in shock at the glowing sword inside his chest that pierced his armor so easily and caused his health to drop significantly.

Hall didn’t stop there. After Lily almost broke into tears as she saw him lying on the ground covered in wounds, she now was excited and shivered in inner turmoil as she saw the still badly hurt Hall up again, stronger than before.

Instead of healing him she continued to put all her feelings into her voice as Hall rammed the sword even deeper and with the same movement gained some distance between him and the armored figure.

Before Azmodan could recover, the chains, now also brimming with a red energy that looked like cleansing flames, were again brutally raining down on him delivering crushing blows.

Although the attacks before barely damaged the armor and caused only little damage, his strikes now cracked the armor with each hit resulting in massive damage.

With each blow Azmodan’s health dropped and before he could regain his fighting stance, pieces of his armor started to fall off, laying bare a dark mass below that didn’t look like skin and seemed to be composed of shadows.

For the first time since his time as a human he felt an emotion he thought he was only able of causing. Fear. This human, so close to death, overwhelmed him with his pressure and managed to deal blow after blow, crushing his body along with his mind.

Azmodan was confused, scared, helpless. The blade in his chest caused insufferable pain and the chains raining down on him stripped away his health. He knew he was about to die.

“Human, I won’t allow you to be my death, I will choose the way I leave this world and I will take you with me, know your death was named Azmodan.”

Within the blink of an eye, the remaining black armor cracked and exploded, releasing all the soul energy Azmodan drained and stored over the last year. The corrupted essence of hundreds of souls, tainted by darkness and soiled by evil discharged into a giant explosion ripping apart the demons body and rushing over Hall in a wave of darkness.

“Hear my judgement and be cleansed, leave this world and find peace in death as it was refused to you in life. Rest now, that’s all I can do for you.”

His own pressure build up a wall and as Azmodan was finally defeated, Hall’s soul energy returned to the calm blue tone, cleansing the souls that tried to overwhelm him, granting them rest.

You have leveled up

After all was said and done Hall collapsed where he stood. His beaten and burnt body hurt everywhere and the only thing that kept him conscious was Lily that grabbed his hand, slowly restoring his health. Again no words were needed between them, they knew exactly what they felt.

Still, Lily whispered while touching his cheek gently. “Thank you… for not giving up…for helping them…for being… you.”
