《The Trials of Bethany》50 - Sisters

Legend has it long, long ago there were three siblings. Their names shift depending on the telling but the most common interpretations have them called Wisdonna, Platilda and Naia, Wisdonna and Platilda were non-identical twins and were the oldest of the siblings with Naia being nebulously younger. The three were alone on the planet, being the first 3 sapient being to appear on Hapterel before even the initialisation occurred. Some say in the whole universe. The three were strong and curious being who explored the whole surface of the world. Exploring both the primary continent as well as the assortment of smaller islands and the vastness of the seas. Travelling from place to place and taking in all the natural beauties the planet had to offer as well as investigating the secrets of some of these phenomenon.

These journeys weren’t solemn but were exciting, chatty affairs where they thrilled with each discovery and thrived even during more challenging and dangerous challenges. So strong of will and in tune with nature they willingly slept inside Hepcal pods enjoying the pleasant dreams they induced as well as the protection from the outside would without fear for the consequences that would be deadly for a normal person. The path they walked left new types of plant in their wake. Plants grew to feed them on their journey and foliage in their way shifted away or even died rather than bar their path. While they walked Platilda and Naia chatted constantly while Wisdonna was more pensive and chose to chime in with less frequency. This isn’t to say she was silent or unamused by their constant antics.

Having travelled the world they decided they had found the most beautiful spot in the land and decided to settle down, to build their homes and spend the rest of their days there together. They helped each other build houses they were happy with and that reflected their outlook.

Wisdonna built wide and short preferring to have a lot of rooms on the same level than a stack of rooms. The rooms were varied and most were empty ready to be utilised when needed. They did all contain at least one bookshelf the likes of which she was slowly populating with her finding about the planet as well as any flights of fancy into fiction that struck her. She also painted huge visages of the sights they’d seen from huge waterfalls to areas of beautiful overlapping vines. These painting similarly adorned each room their order mirroring the order of their own journey.

Platilda built her house directly next to Wisdonna’s and the two build numerous routes between their houses from platforms to leap across to underground tunnels. Her house looked like somebody had taken random rooms from a collection of buildings and stuck them together, no real cohesion to size, shape or style. It started much smaller than the houses of her sisters but grew almost daily as she was struck with inspiration for another idea. Unlike Wisdonna she also built upwards as well as outwards and had multiple methods of entry to each room. While each room had a simple method of entry they were also areas that could be jumped or crawled through as well as ropes that could be swung on or climbed.

Naia’s property was very similar to Platilda’s and was situated just behind the other two. With rooms attached randomly to each other and changing role constantly, when she decided a room should no longer be a bedroom she would shift it and use it as a kitchen or whatever else struck her whim. Something that had previously resulted in the whole house having no bathrooms anywhere as they had all been turned into something else. Her rooms similarly had random methods of traversal, however unlike Platilda’s it didn’t have any permanence. Instead the rooms were fashion in such a way that they were naturally shift into the desired exit she required. A trait that noticeable didn’t apply to her sisters and instead they would have to follow though whatever route had struck her fancy the last time she had entered or exited the room.

The three lived together for many centuries growing in strength and knowledge as they studied and got more in tune with one another as well as with nature. While they all hung out frequently together Wisdonna and Platilda were naturally closer to each other than either was to Naia. This was something she grew to deeply resent over time. After all on paper the energetic Platilda was much more similar to herself than she was to Wisdonna who Naia had come to see as stuffy and uptight. What she didn’t see was that the bond between the twins was far deeper than surface level having things in common, and even then Wisdonna engaged in frivolity with Platilda very frequently, she just also was aware of times it was best to be serious and focus up. A skill Naia didn’t possess or understand to be useful.

Eventually after the jealous had only grown and grown, and despite Wisdonna frequently attempting to include and get along with Naia the resentment grew too much and she decided to take it into her own hand and to act. She was convinced that if only she hurt the relationship between the two then Platilda would naturally turn to her as a best friend. She also figured eventually the other two would make up and they would continue to be a trio but with her just slightly higher on the popularity ladder than she was currently. So she hatched a plan under the cloak of night decided to enact it.

She snuck into Wisdonna’s home, her sanctuary, while she slept and sneaking into the various rooms she destroyed the assorted handwritten books. She did more than destroy them though and used them to vandalise each other, switching sections and scribbling out some as well as completely destroying some of them. To clearly place the blame though she turned many into paper snowflakes and used them as well as the cover of the books to create a room of an arctic wonderland, much like that in one of the stories Wisdonna had recently told Platilda while Naia listened. Having completed her deed she snuck back out of Wisdonna’s home using the tunnels into Naia’s home and then sneaking across to her own home base. There she slept soundly delighted by the knowledge that shortly all her dreams would come true.

She awoke to the sound of sawing and wood shifting and got up to see Wisdonna removing all the connections between her home and that of Platilda, systematically ensuring they couldn’t get into the property again without using the main entrances. However, Wisdonna didn’t stop there and removed all but one entrance to the property. Even this only lead to a small waiting room into which she would come to meet Platilda or Naia when they visited. But she was closed off. Naia only realised how much fun she could be when retroactively she wasn’t anymore, but she hadn’t thought ahead and had simply assumed her plan would work.

Wisdonna never left her home any more and the frequency she would come to meet the others in her entry room decreased until one day they found the door shut completely with a small note saying she was focusing on recreating her notes and would be available again once she’d finished her studies. That day never came and her home became more and more reinforced against external influences.

Though she never saw Wisdonna again Naia did still see Platilda. In fact to begin with she was convinced her plan was working. Wisdonna would return but in the mean time the other two could bond. It seemed almost ideal. Obviously it wasn’t. It started slight, Platilda would double check if she’d properly put out a fire, she would mutter to herself things she had to remember over and over in an effort to make sure she remembered them. But these minor quirks became more and more drastic over time. She began to try to avoid sleeping because she didn’t want time to pass without her being aware, she would constantly stare at her hands to make sure they weren’t acting without her control. These delusions only fed into each other exasperating the issue.

A lack of sleep caused her to fall asleep spontaneously. Not for long but for long enough to notice and become terrified of what she might have done in that time. Eventually she drew back from Naia and stopped trying to visit Wisdonna. She didn’t trust herself anymore, the paranoia had overwhelmed her every action. Much like Wisdonna she ended up locking herself away. Protecting those around her from herself and the damage she thought she was capable of doing.

This left Naia all alone in her house, having caused her sisters to pull away from each other and her. There she waited, hoping against hope one of her two sisters would leave their sanctuary and that she could apologise and undo the damage she had done to the two most important people in her life.

Over time the homes of the three sisters grew further to protect them until three glorious mountains stood over the land, casting their glow on all below. Yet even then the damage between Wisdonna and Platilda remained set in stone until the day they would come together once more.

Each mountain they became was slightly different. The mountain that was Wisdonna’s home, was the most overtly dangerous of the mountains but also the most beautiful full of incredible landscapes who’s very existence seemed questionable. Platilda’s mountain didn’t have anything physical that discerned it but all who climb would swear out the corner of their eye they would spot a being, or hear a sound that nobody else on the journey was aware of. Many people were driven mad by her mysteries. Finally, Naia’s mountain was ever shifting. Not in a huge noisy way but the routes would change. Areas normally safe would start having frequent landslides and a steep but climbable cliff face becomes an overhang. Small changes but enough that the phrase “I bet you bought a map for Naia” become a cultural way to call somebody stupid. It was also an act frequently done to take advantage of tourists.

Ever since the ritual of the three sisters has been a long standing tradition. Before unlocking their system a child was sent without aid to climb the 3 sisters. To meditate on the lessons they had to teach the most important of which was the strengths and dangers of friendship. Only once this was completed would they be recognised as fully citizens of the local settlements.
