《A Fungal Dream》Chapter 30. Comrade

??? POV:
This was crazy.
Each word from that monster’s mouth was insane.
Monsters? Skills? Races? Reincarnated?
It sounded like the ramblings of a lunatic! ( (Author Note: Bear it in mind that the first D&D game came out in 1947 and the first proper manga, Astro Boy, was published in 1952. Even if there was one earlier, America and Japan didn’t have a rosy connection in the 20th century. (I think))
“That’s the gift of it.”
The monster who called himself Phil stretched one of his tentacle-like arms and grabbed a white coat on the ground.
From what I could tell he was some sort of humanoid being, with green skin and glowing emerald eyes, his hair resembling vines rather than hair. His clothing was ragged, full of tears, which displayed various wounds. While I looked at him, I saw that one of his legs was missing, probably why he was sitting in one of those chairs.
That chair was hideous to look at, made from green meat and bones, moving as if it was a living being, with four tentacles on its back, each ending with a hand.
What sort of creature would dare to sit into a chair like that?
Clumsily searching, through the coat, the tentacle pulled out a flat flask, opened it, and helped Phil drink it.
“Want some? It's whiskey.”
“…I am seventeen. And its alcohol is banned.” (Author Note: Prohibition from 1920 to 1933)
“You just died and reincarnated in a different world. I think the age limit is out of the window.”
I looked at the bottle then I shook my head.
Being somebody who saw what alcohol did to people, I had no intention to be a part of it.
“Probably a safe option. You are in a new body which we know shit. Things which are harmless to me can be deadly to you.”
“W-Who are you exactly? How do you know all this? You said your name but I aside from that…”
“Right, right I forgot to tell you about myself.”
He put away the bottle and cleared his throat.
“As I said My name is Phil Smith, and I was a human, like you, who got sucked into this world like you.”
He got what?
“It’s a crazy story now that I am thinking about it. I woke up in a lab as a skeleton, broke out of the lab, hid in a city full of racist humans, started a plague, un-started a plague, got picked up by a group of monsters who brought me here, and since then I have been living here.”
“…Okay, I give up.”
I couldn’t understand a word he was saying, and I was afraid that if I did, I would go crazy.
“Smart idea. Just go with the flow till you are used to it. But on a serious note, we should check what sort of skills you have. Say the word status aloud and you will see something cool.”
“Eh...Okay. Status.”
As I said the words, letters formed in my mind, forming complex sentences.

“What is this?”
“What did your stats say? If you tell me, I might be able to explain them to you.”
A little bit shocked about what I saw, I told him about what I saw.
After he listened to me, he shook his head.
“Right, listen, I will explain it to you. The name is basic stuff, it’s how you are called. The race tells you what you are, by the way, I am an elf. -
“An elf? You?”
He looks... a little rough to be one of those magical creatures.
“-Your Level is quite complicated. See, in this world, by killing things or doing certain things people get something called EXP. This Exp will Strengthen their bodies and when it reaches its limit, which in your case seems LV: 50, your body goes through a transformation called Evolution. As for the classes, think about them as jobs. Each job has special talents called skills which will strengthen your body somewhat. Allow me to show you something.”
Slowly he lifted his normal left arm and chanted something.
"Lord, nourish these flames born from my fingertips so that they become a roaring fire. Fire Spark."
From his fingertips, a small number of flames flared up, before disappearing in the air.
“H-How did you do that?”
“My class is called [Life Father]. Using prayers, I can do some amount of magic. From what you told me, one of your own classes deals with this, so it is probable that in the future, you are going to be able to do the same. “
I will be able to do magic. Me?
As I was trying to make sense of this, the chair slowly closer to me, the figure looking directly into my eyes.
“But those are things meant for the future. Right now, you have to decide something else. What are you going to do now that you arrived here? Where are you going to go? Who do you wish to become?”
“I… have no idea. Things happened just too fast. I just need a place to calm down and think things through.”
Phil stared into my eyes for a while, then nodded.
“In that case, I know a gall with a super big castle full of empty rooms. I can ask her to accommodate you there and give you a job till you figure this whole thing out.”
“Will that be alright?”
“Don’t worry! She loves me!”
As we spoke something was approaching us from the caverns.
When they got close enough, I could tell that they were a group of small creatures, entirely dressed in brown cloth with their heads covered by sacks that had a smiling face sewed onto them.

“Did you bring it?”
The small people nodded and showed him a piece of fabric, which seemed to be made out of various other pieces of cloth.
“Good job. You kid put it on.”
“Me? Why?”
“Remember about the part about things that could kill you? That tunnel is filled with poisonous spores. To my species it's harmless but to others it's fatal. If you don’t want to become a mushroom yourself, then I recommend you put it on.”
Not knowing how to respond to this, I did as he said.
The suit was uncomfortable, I could tell it was poorly made, with the arms being in a different length, but not wide enough for my multiple sets of joints.
“All set? Let’s go.”
Walking through the tunnels, I saw more and more blackish-green stuff growing on the walls, some even having strange glowing mushrooms on their surfaces.
“We are reaching the village. From there I will bring you to the stairs leading to the surface.”
Soon after he said that we arrived at an underground village.
The buildings here were crudely made entirely of stones, connected together with cobblestone streets.
Where there was no house or streets, were white flowers, glowing strangely in the light the mushrooms let out.
As I approached it, I noticed that the air was strange, it had a hint of blackness to it, as the fine black powder was constantly falling on us.
Is this the mold he talked about?
Feeling a sense of fear, I swallowed my breath as I followed him.
As we were about to enter another tunnel, one of the little people came closer to us, holding something long covered meticulously in a brown sheet of fabric.
“Oh, thank you, I will surely need it.”
Nodding, the creature walked away, entering one of the nearby houses.
“What are these beings?”
“They are called kayeri. Think of them as sapient mushrooms.”
“Are they dangerous?”
“Are you dangerous? In this world, you won’t survive long if you don’t know how to kill something…I learned this the hard way.”
We continued walking through the tunnel, arriving at another big cave.
Here, the floor was covered in sand, and various wooden weapons and training dummies were scattered all over the place.
“Father…wounded.”
What the fuck!?
Several giant creatures kneeled before us.
They were the size of a house, each having multiple sets of arms, and instead of faces, their heads were covered by holes, from which a thin amount of smoke escaped.
“I am fine. If I may ask, can one of you help me get up the stairs?”
One of the giants carefully picked him up from his chair, which quickly ran past me, into the depths of the tunnels.
“Thank you. Cockroach, follow us. Or rather…pick him up.”
“Wh-What? Whai-HEY!”
Picking me up like a doll, the monster carried us on a flight of stairs, on which it had to crawl on all fours just to fit in.
“When we reach the surface there are several things you need to remember.”
As Phil talked, he put on his coat and a similar mask those little people used.
“You can’t speak about the other world. Monsters aren’t quite tame as you would think, some would tear you apart if you aren’t careful enough. Try to blend into the crowd and learn as much as you can about this world. “
“Anything else.”
“… If you can, stay away from the royal family as much as possible. They are too much trouble.”
Soon, we arrived at the end of the stairs.
“Sigh, here we go.”
Jumping off the arms of the giant, he opened the package, which contained a walking can.
He slowly moved to the door, groaning in pain, he opened the door which showed me my new world.
*****
“What have you done to him!?”
There was quite a scene happening in the royal palace.
Kneeling before the throne, the physician Phil and his unknown companion, fidgeted uncomfortably while the king was screaming at them.
Between them, on a well-made pile of blankets and pillows, the prince was sleeping, his eyes still covered by the rainbow-colored powder.
“My king, if you may, I have a per-“
“I DON’T CARE!”
This time he shouted so loud, the ground shook a little.
“YOU WILL WAKE HIM UP! NOW!”
“Alright! Alright. I will need-
“Get. To. Work. Before I cut off your other leg.”
“Aya, Aya, Ma’am! I -Ugghh!”
Without relishing it, the king appeared right before him, grabbing his left shoulder.
“Hell Paralysis.”
As she said the words, his shoulder became covered in drake flames, making him scream in pain.
“Call me a woman again and I will be sure to curse that insolent mouth of yours next time.”
“Curse?!”
The giant cockroach looked worriedly towards the ruckus, but instead of black smoke, he saw something else.
“Cu-Curse, Curse, Curse, fly away as my lady of health lay her healing tear upon my head. Curse dispersion.”
Soon the flames disappeared from his shoulder.
“Damn it, express prayer to the rescue! If only I had a pen to write it down… and I forgot it. Greta.”
Phill looked up to the king, the smile on his mask looking somehow ominous.
“Does this count as workplace abuse? Cause I am thinking about filing a complaint.”
Hearing this the king got pissed. A dark aura formed around its body as the ground shook, with a few bolts of crimson lightning escaping from its body.
The scene before the cockroach made him shake, wishing to return into the cave, to escape the two monsters who were about to jump onto each other's throats.

8 190Embers in the Ash
Four ordinary young people from four corners of the Earth wake up on a hill in another world. Here, their very presence is a crime against the Gods. On the fringes of civilization, life is often brief and always violent, but in the Empire's Heartland, implacable hunters seek to rectify their blasphemous existence with Blade and Fire. To return home, they will need to adapt to a place where their life will be earned in steel. But what will they be ready to sacrifice for their goal? Will their flame flicker out like so many others before them? Or will they thrive as Embers in the Ash? Hello, and welcome to my first fiction on this site! Embers in the Ash is an epic fantasy adventure story that aims to span quite a few chapters (I hope!). To set expectations, this isn't going to be a LitRPG or power fantasy-style story. I'm aiming for a fairly grounded story set in a fairly high-fantasy world. I hope you enjoy it! For this first month of publication, my aim is to give you, the reader, something to really bite into. I will be releasing a chapter every day at 9:15 AM EST (13:15 GMT), as well as the occasional double chapter (which will always be announced by a post-chapter author blurb). Check in fifteen minutes after the first chapter's release! After this first month of publication, the aim is to go for either a weekly or bi-weekly release schedule, depending on the sort of time I can reliably dedicate to writing. Either way, settle in for the long haul, and welcome to the story!
