《Awakening: Prodigy》Chapter 16.5: Demon in Plain Sight (v3.17)

Mr. Mathers,
We in Squad IV hold ourselves to higher standards than the average team. We aim to beat Squad VII, securing our place as prominent contenders in the Academy’s history. We cannot achieve this goal when registered team members fail to attend scheduled training and meetings.
When I agreed to take you on as a favour for Captain Wright, I was assured that you would be willing to bring yourself up to our standards. In a nutshell, he assured us that you could be refined into a usable asset.
It is with great disappointment that I hereby notify you of your imminent removal from Squad IV. Do not reapply.
Captain Evelyn Clark
She was dead now. Her and everyone who belonged to Squad IV. She got what she deserved. They all did. It wasn’t his fault he couldn’t find out what happen on the field that day. It’s not like he shucked his responsibilities. It wasn’t his fault! Why were people always blaming him when things went wrong?
He switched to his notifications. He needed a friendly concerned message from one of his friends, a single message that showed him that someone out there noticed his absence and missed him. Finding his friends messages would be easier to spot among the brilliantly color coded notification system. He could ignore all of the orange notices, since he was officially kicked off of Squad IV.
A pile of notices from the school, listed in grey, filled his screen, forcing him to scroll for a while before nearly brushing past a different color.
‘LECTURE ON ADVANCED APPLIED MATHEMATICS IN TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE BUILDING ON FLOOR 10, ROOM 1025 IN 5 MINUTES’
The first notice was dated four weeks ago, Monday. He always loved these little reminders. When he was approved to attend the academy, he had nightmares about not being able to find his class. In one version of the nightmare, they had switched classrooms at the last minute and hadn’t told him.

‘LATE FOR LECTURE ON ADVANCED APPLIED MATHEMATICS IN TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE BUILDING ON FLOOR 10, ROOM 1025’
‘FAILED TO ATTEND LECTURE ON ADVANCED APPLIED MATHEMATICS IN TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE BUILDING ON FLOOR 10, ROOM 1025. FLAGGED AS ABSENT. MEDIC SENT TO GENERAL STUDIES 3ND TIER DORMS IN ADMINISTRATION SECTOR, BUILDING D UNIT 305.’
It was protocol to send a medic in case the student was ill. Class attendance was optional for the most part, as long as the students grades were high. It was assumed that the people who were attending class needed the dedicated attention of a professional educator. As far as William knew, there were at least four tiers of student groups. Most prayed that they never fell into the fourth group; those were the students who were on their way out of the Academy’s graces. They’d finish their term and then be invited to leave.
William realized early on that class attendance was about so much more than grades; they were about social connections. He found the advanced students hard to relate to. They’d geek out about their current obsession as though nothing else in the world mattered. Liam was like that with hacking the Games Matrix. The only reason Liam managed to make friends at all was because he got close once in his second year. People noticed and took an interest.
Most people wanted to be in the second tier group: the smart kids with too many social obligations. People like Nicole, the infamously gorgeous Captain of the Event Committee, or Sarah who spent most of her free time planning private events and catering to VIPs she wanted to have attend one of her parties. She claimed it separated the wanna-be’s from the people who made things happen. Even the first tier students needed the connections the second tiered students made because there were so few first tiered students, fewer with social skills.

William fell on the cusp of the third tier to second tier groups. He was smart enough to do well in the second tier group, but didn’t feel the need to show off. He couldn’t give the people in the second tier group what they wanted, even if they figured out he existed. It was better to underperform than to disappoint. At least he knew he could do better, and that’s what counted, right?
‘FAILED TO SUBMIT ASSIGNMENT #1004 FOR LECTURE ON ADVANCED APPLIED MATHEMATICS IN TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE BUILDING ON FLOOR 10, ROOM 1025. 10% PENALTY ON FINAL GRADE.’
‘ADVANCED APPLIED MATHEMATICS ASSIGNMENT #1005. VIEW ASSIGNMENT REQUIREMENTS.’
‘STUDENT NOT FOUND IN DORM. ABSENTEEISM CONFIRMED. STUDENT MUST MEET WITH DOCTOR ASAP IN GENERAL STUDIES BUILDING, FLOOR 25.’
‘FAILED TO MEET WITH DOCTOR. ABSENTEEISM RECORDED ON PERMANENT RECORD.’
The sequence of missed classed repeated each class, daily for the full week. By Friday he was receiving the red notices, a colour reserved for impending consequences.
‘DUE TO REPEATED FAILURES TO ATTEND SCHEDULED LEARNING, WE HAVE CONTACTED YOUR FATHER, MASTER MATHIAS MATHERS TO ASSIST IN RESOLVING THE ISSUE. CONTINUED ABSENTEEISM WILL RESULT IN EXPULSION FROM COUNCIL’S ACADEMY.’
His dad must have got that last notice after he left the Academy, or else the last letter he had received might not have come across as mild disappointment. William assumed that the Red Order hadn’t approved of Mathias leaving Clearwater since his last visit. He might have realized that his son wasn’t trying to avoid him, but had genuinely gone missing. He might have been able to do something. Instead, William had to save himself.
‘FAILING GRADE RECEIVED ON ASSIGNMENT #1004. FAILED TO SUBMIT ASSIGNMENT.’
Similar red notices for all of his failed assignments started filtering in, until he hit more grey notices.
‘SCHEDULED FOR REMEDIAL STUDIES ON ADVANCED APPLIED MATHEMATICS WITH PROFESSOR BOURGEOIS.’ Which was followed by a list involving all of his classes.
‘FAILED TO ATTEND SESSION FOR REMEDIAL STUDIES ON ADVANCED APPLIED MATHEMATICS WITH PROFESSOR BOURGEOIS.’ Again a list that made up all of his classes zoomed by. William felt his chest tighten. How was he going to fix this? It wasn’t his fault! Would they understand? Would they believe him? He knew what the next red notice was going say:
‘FAILED TO MEET MINIMUM GRADE REQUIREMENTS. EXPULSION SCHEDULED AS OF FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH. MASTER MATHIAS MATHERS HAS BEEN CONTACTED TO RETRIEVE THE STUDENT AND THEIR BELONGINGS. ACCESS PERMISSION STATUS CHANGED TO GUEST. PLEASE REPORT TO ADMINISTRATION BUILDING FOR TEMPORARY HOUSING.’
The last notice was sent Friday morning. Yesterday.
William stared at the screen. He didn’t know what to think. He didn’t know what to do. His life, his future, it was all over. The Academy’s slogan stared back at him.
Council’s Academy
Striving for Excellence
Excellence Begins With You
It wasn’t his fault.

Stanley moved to Bleakburn, hoping to start life over, when strange occurrences keep happening around him. Each day, people grow more disheartened and depressed. Each month, someone jumps off the same apartment complex building, that he could afford. Police are scrambling off different cases, unsure of how to handle them.On top of that, a strange new face appears in his new workplace, one who's taken on Stanley's appearance. His name was Jordan, and besides his name, the only difference between him and Stanley were his eye color and personality. Having a hunch that Jordan is the cause of the occurrences happening around town, Stanley tries to get to the bottom of things. Can he pull it off without digging too deep and losing his sanity? (Just a heads up in advance, this is a pretty slow-paced story, so it'll take a while for the main plot(s) to get going)
8 330The Mystifying Diviner
Content warning, there is cursing in the story and there will be some pretty heavy sexual innuendos in it also. I don’t really plan to write gore, but there will be fight scenes. Fair warning to readers, it is a slow start. But hopefully it is enjoyable for you to read. Follow the story of an old chef who was lucky to be selected to become a system host. Well maybe not so lucky, because gaining the system killed him. He will be given a system that might not be the best match for him. While also having to deal with a snarky system monitor who might not be that helpful most of the time. He will also use his new found powers to enjoy life in a new younger body. What you can expect from this story is bad writing, poor grammar, and slow pacing maybe. Food, cooking, comedy, slice of life, fighting, exploring, tournaments, scamming and probably face slapping. I mean who doesn’t like a good face slapping? This is my take on a cultivation story, a lot of Eastern stuff will be crammed into with a mix of Western. This story started as a goal for myself to write 60,000 words in a month for NaNoWriMo. I was able to do it even with taking days off and not writing. I plan to keep writing the story, but at a slightly slower pace. I am aiming for 2-3 chapters a week now with about 4-7k words written. This is only posted on RoyalRoad currently, and I have no plans to change that for now. 8 68Reality's Gate: Stealing The Gifts Of The Gods
One day, earth managed to create an alternate Reality Gate. However, it malfunctioned, molding our reality with the other. In this, it became commonplace to jump between worlds, create magical wonders, destroy and create with but a whim. The biggest change though came from something that was truly unique: The "gifts" given at birth. These "Gifts" given by the gods of that reality were now bestowed upon our Reality as well. Yet, there was one person who wasn't given a gift. And in a last ditch effort of The Anomalous One to fight the gods gave him a gift since the gods wouldn't. Though it was a gift for him, it was a curse for others... This is a story about The Successor of the Ouroboros, who was given the gift of thievery, the gift of taking what the gods give to others and using it for his own purposes. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ This is not a good guy's story. This is someone filled with hate. This is someone who wants revenge against the gods who didn't give him a gift. This. Is. The. Anti-hero. Of. Anti-heroes. 8 89Contact Through Voided Lenses
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Edit: Fixed some inaccuracies in the synopsis. The void is a vast unexplored ocean filled with various wonders and dangers all waiting to be explored by those brave enough to travel and record. Many souls do find themselves brave enough to face the vast distances, the various risks to personal safety and do the hundreds of task required on a craft. However, at times the void itself can be boring with absolutely nothing to do but as time pass and more and better technology is reached, things got better. The various trips got faster, communications became faster than light and you can be home to see your loved ones after only months now. Through the various planets whether rocky or gaseous, the various stars whether small or giant, the various systems both eerily similar or completely alien. As part of an expeditionary scientific exploratory survey craft, one could see that the void offers no reprieve from all the discoveries and wonders. At times, it can feel empty and silent where no soul can hear you scream and at others it can be overwhelming with sudden phenomenon that can overwhelm the brightest of minds. The void itself is a truly fascinating ocean where one must chart the various islands or drown in its deadly tidal waves. But the question still remained no matter how you try to hide it in of itself… is there truly other intelligent life out there? Are we alone in this ocean? Those very questions still haunt the minds of those on the crafts themselves as they brace for every jump ready for the unknown and the known. Many would try to explain that yes there is other intelligent life out there whilst other still say no after 2 centuries of continuous flight out of the home system. Still, those are questions that bury deep in the minds of the crew and those at home as the voidcraft jumps to a system with a single yellow star orbited by 8 other planets with one crowning blue jewel being the 3rd closest with its 5 oceans and 7 continents, a planet called Dirt which is inhabited by a primitive species called Humanity. Hello, author here and this is my newest dive into writing particularly for the Writathon currently in progress being my first one. I hope you give me story a try but in case you still want more information on what you’re getting into, below are some pointers about the story itself. First Contact: CTVL is a story about a first contact scenario between an advanced alien civilization and a slightly more advanced modern day humanity on their planet called Dirt. Characters: The story will take place mainly on the perspective of the alien visitors themselves though there will be human POV characters who will show how the rest of humanity react through media and forums. Action: It won’t be an actual alien invasion but you have to see for yourself how well first contact went. Sci-Fi: I will be very forward here, I WILL bend the rules of physics in order to add in parts of the plot and there WILL be parts that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Theme: It will be a brooding story talking about the futility of pe… Just kidding, it’s mostly wholesome stuff to be honest here. Alien: The aliens themselves will… actually why should I tell you, you have to go and read it to find out what the aliens are though I will draw a few things here and there to aid in the process. Extra tidbit: If you are a grammar nazi or someone who really wants a realistic scifi story... this story is probably not for you at all. Anyways, that’s pretty much all I can say before I spoil something major of the plot itself, the story is slice of life so make sure that type of story is what you like because I am terrible with anything else as I found out, anyways, have a good time everyone and good luck to the other Writathon participants.
