Chapter 50
Chapter 50 Busy as a Marketplace
Turning the corner, Long Chen stopped, stunned at what he was seeing .
The entrance to his noble estate which used to be always deserted now had a long queue in front of it, all of them married women in their forties or fifties .
He looked around and had to confirm again that this was house . Only then did he walk over .
At this time Bao-er was laughing happily as she received them . “Don’t worry everyone, take it slow . Register the name, status, measurements, a picture, and any other particulars clearly for me . ”
“Miss, can you tell us what the Madam likes in a daughter in law?” one of the wives smiled charmingly .
“Hehe, as long as they conduct themselves properly and aren’t ugly, then anything is fine . But the Madam did say she liked those with big hips the best . She said that the wider the hips, the easier she’ll give birth . Let me tell you, my Madam has actually long since desired to hold a grandson… haha, young master, you’ve returned . ” Bao-er was enthusiastically talking to them when she suddenly saw the gloomy Long Chen .
“Greetings young master . ” Those wives all quickly greeted him .
Long Chen nodded to them and then pulled Bao-er into the courtyard . Pointing to the wives, he angrily whispered, “What are you doing?”
“Young master, yesterday you boldly defeated an opponent from the Grand Xia and basically obtained the title of number one junior warrior in the Phoenix Cry capital . You’ve become an idol for countless maidens, and they’re all here to make familial ties . ” Bao-er covered up her smile .
“I knew you would make trouble . Where’s mom?”
“Madam is inside . Aiya, I actually forgot, she told me she wanted to see you as soon as you came home . ” Bao-er clapped her forehead .
“Good, I’ll go right now . You hurry up and find a way to get rid of them . What kind of place is this? This isn’t a marketplace . ” Long Chen wasn’t in a good mood .
“Hehe, I can’t do that . Madam sent me to receive all of them . I better go . ”
Who would have thought that the always cute and obedient Bao-er would actually not listen to Long Chen and actually run back to those wives with delight .
Long Chen rolled his eyes and went to see his mother . His mind was constantly spinning along the way, trying to find a way to describe the events that had occurred yesterday without making his mother worried .
But as soon as he entered her room, before he could even say anything, his mother angrily said, “This annoying kid, hurry up and enter . ”
Ah, perhaps there was no way for him to explain himself . No matter how he thought about it, he couldn’t come up with a good excuse .
But what he had not expected was for his mother to pull him over to a table covered in pictures of beautiful woman .
“Chen-er, look, these nineteen ladies were carefully selected by me out of over a hundred . Whether it is in terms of beauty, etiquette, or status, they are all very suitable with you . Quickly look, do any attract your interest?”

Seeing Long Chen was in a daze, Mrs . Long urged, “What are you waiting for? Hurry up and check them out . ”
“Uh… ok, I’ll look . ”
Only now did Long Chen realize that his mother had already completely forgotten what had happened yesterday .
But when he looked at those portraits, Long Chen’s expression became a bit strange .
At this time Mrs . Long said complacently, “Look at how beautiful they are Chen-er . Especially their waists and hips; they definitely are suited for birthing . If you marry a couple of them, I’m telling that there’ll definitely be some babies growing in just two months . ”
Mrs . Long was unable to contain her own joy . It seemed as if she could already see the scene of her holding a bunch of her grandchildren .
A bead of sweat rolled down Long Chen’s face, dripping onto the portraits . It ended up landing on a girls’ buttocks, following along the ink and making that part seem even larger…
“Mom, I feel like this should…” Long Chen started to make an excuse .
“Stop delaying . Before your mom thought you wouldn’t be able to find a suitable wife, and now that so many callers have come today, don’t you dare waste this chance . I won’t make it hard for you . Pick out three for me today . Later you can pick some more . In any case, if you don’t choose at least ten of them, don’t even think of going away . ”
Long Chen’s face turned green . Was this supposed to be like breeding livestock? But looking at how strict she was, it seemed she was extremely serious about this matter .
Just as he was at a loss on how to reply, a rough voice rang out . “Brother Long . ”
A huge figure rushed in and pulled Long Chen . “Brother Long, I heard you fought with someone yesterday . Why didn’t you bring me?”
Long Chen saw that it was Aman who had rushed in . Inside he cheered; this brother of his had truly come at the perfect time .
“Mom, I still have some stuff to do and have to talk to Aman . You just slowly do some selections . Once you finish those I’ll come look again . ”
“Kid, you-“
Just as she was beginning to speak, Yao Chen had already quickly pulled Aman far away .
“That rascal . ”
She quietly scolded, but when she turned back to look at the portraits of those ample girls, she quickly became gratified .
“Brother Long, did you get injured yesterday?” Aman asked Long Chen in concern .
“No, your brother Long will now have to fight more and more . Speaking of which, have you learned how to use that technique of using energy that I taught you?” asked Long Chen .
He had taught Aman how to circulate his spiritual qi throughout his meridians . But his comprehension skills were extremely low .
If it weren’t for how powerful Long Chen’s spiritual energy was and that he could teach him by actually guiding him from within, he or anyone else would have found it impossible to teach him .

When Long Chen brought up cultivation, Aman became extremely proud . “Brother Long, I can already use that technique he taught me . ”
“Really?” Long Chen was delighted .
Long Chen brought Aman to an empty area behind the estate . Pointing towards a stone the rough size of a human, he said, “Crush this just with the wind generated from your fist . ”
“Yes . ”
Aman agreed and punched out a single fist .
Wind rushed over the stone, causing it to tremble slightly .
“I didn’t do it right that time . Again . ” Aman was a bit embarrassed .
Another fist shot out, and the wind still only caused the stone to tremble slightly .
“Strange . Again!”
He tried three more times, but the stone remained the same as ever . Long Chen’s face darkened .
“Aman, this is what you’ve learned?”
“Yes . Normally I can succeed in three out of ten punches . It’s just not working today…” Aman was distressed .
Hearing that, Long Chen almost tripped . When fighting with others, could you really rely on chance?
Long Chen felt a headache . This Aman was basically a treasure trove, but the difficulty in unlocking that treasure was incredibly great .
Placing a hand on Aman’s back, Long Chen said, “Try again . ”
“Ok . ”
Aman once more punched out, but this time there was not the least bit of energy behind it .
“Before you punch, you have to prepare . First urge your Dantian into motion, and then punch out . Remember that it is the Dantian that drives the fist, and not the fist that urges the Dantian . ”
While he was in contact with Aman’s body, he could sense that Aman was first punching out and then using his meridian’s energy to spur the Dantian .
This kind of technique could work, but when it came to Aman, it would be a matter of luck . Experienced cultivators would have no problem with doing it like that, but it would be too difficult for Aman to do that .
“Try again . Don’t rush your punch . Circulate your Dantian . Ok, your Dantian is operating . Punch . ”
BOOM!
A huge boom rang out and that man-sized stone was crushed into complete rubble .
“Brother Long, I succeeded!” happily shouted Aman .
Long Chen nodded . He appeared calm on the outside, but inside he was filled with endless shock . Aman had once more become much stronger .
That last fist had had enough power to crush the late stage Blood Condensation Huang Chang .
Although he wouldn’t be able to compare to Huang Chang once he was used his beast transformation, Aman was probably even better than him in terms of power . However his movements had far too many flaws .
Moreover he had only managed to use a strand of energy from his Dantian and wasn’t able to use his full power . It could be said that Aman’s potential was truly frightening .
“Good, now do it again,” encouraged Long Chen .
Aman once more punched out, but this fist was empty like his previous ones .
For a moment it was just Long Chen looking at Aman, and Aman looking at Long Chen . Long Chen was completely silent for over ten minutes .
Finally Aman patted his head . “Brother Long, is it that I’m too dumb?”
“I really want to tell you that you’re not dumb, but since I hear liars will be struck by lightning, I don’t dare say it . ” Long Chen looked at the sky worriedly .
“Then what should I do?” Aman was completely dejected .
“From tomorrow onwards you won’t stay at the estate . Go back to the pasture . ”
“Brother Long… do you not want me anymore?” Aman was completely startled and filled with fright .
Long Chen laughed involuntarily, patting Aman’s thick shoulder . “Don’t joke around . We’re life and death brothers . ”
“Then why do you want me to go to the pasture?”
“From tomorrow onwards all your food will have to be handled by yourself . If you want beef, then you have to kill the cow yourself . However the condition is that you must use your true attack to kill the cow, otherwise you’ll just have to live with an empty stomach . Go . ”
Aman promised him and walked away . Watching Aman’s back as he left, Long Chen couldn’t help feeling a bit helpless .
Aman’s comprehension skill was too worrying . Sometimes he worried about whether he should keep Aman by his side . Otherwise with his intelligence he really was a bit too dangerous .
He was an honest person, honest to the point where his head couldn’t even comprehend tricks . That was also why he would never goof off on what Long Chen told him to do .
Long Chen’s instructions were to make him accustomed to using spiritual qi, otherwise when he fought with others, each of his attacks would only have a chance of working . That was no different then sending himself to death .
In any case, Aman’s appetite was growing every day, and each day he ate over a hundred cows . That was enough for him to train .
If he unlocked his full power and he became accustomed to using his spiritual qi, Aman’s strength would reach a level that even Long Chen felt was terrifying .
After properly arranging Aman’s matters, Long Chen returned to his own room . On the way he saw that line of wives and the happily busy Bao-er . Sweat once more began to roll off his forehead .
He sent instructions that he was entering seclusion and not to bother him unless something huge happened .
He was at the eighth Heavenstage of Qi condensation . One more advancement would let him reach the ninth Heavenstage, and from there he could directly step into Blood Condensation .
Only once he reached the Blood Condensation realm could he truly be able to guarantee his survival . He was extremely irritated that nothing was under his control .
“Just wait . Time for me to see the true faces of the people who have constantly been scheming against me . ”

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
