《A Dragon Idol's Reincarnation Tale》Chapter 9: I am Kobold Slayer.

The day has come to an end. With the sun having left the sky to the moon, a certain forest is covered in darkness, with only moonlight and starlight illuminating the night.
Isolated from civilization, on a mountain, the forest sees less action during the night, when only nocturnal hunters and prey wander.
However, on this very night, a feast was held to celebrate the successful hunt from a nomadic tribe of kobolds. The young and female feasted on the rich [Spike Horn Doe] meat, while the five kobold warriors, who lead the hunt, were boasting their strength to indulge themselves in the praises of their tribe. Everybody was cheerful, rightfully so, as it is rare for the whole tribe to be able to eat their fill.
These kobold warriors have a job, their average status compared to an F rank Monster [Spike Horn Doe] or a [Spike Horn Buck]. While they are physically stronger than their kobold brethren, these kobolds still rely on their numbers and ingenuity, just like humans, to take down stronger foes. Safety in numbers, a true and tried strategy. Mistakes are common to happen, so a higher body count for every hunt means a higher chance for a successful hunt.
However, for this hunt, neither wounded nor dead were among the hunters of this monster. A rare blessing for this tribe.
Of course, even with the festive mood, the kobolds would not gamble their life by leaving their guard down in this forest. Hungry creatures still stalk the dusk and with the rambunctious kobolds causing a ruckus in the middle of the night, it will doubtlessly attract one or two curious onlookers.
For this reason, a few of the able kobolds, who did not participate in today’s hunt were guarding the surroundings. Although they were not allowed to join the feast yet, they were not displeased of it. It was natural for them, after all.
It was the duty of the hunters to rest after a successful hunt. It was the duty of the young to eat and grow strong, for the future of the tribe. It was the duty of the females to stay healthy, for they are responsible for the population of the tribe. Lastly, the duty of the guards was to protect the weakened hunters and vulnerable members of the tribe, so the tribe may enjoy these scarce moments.
“Grouuh!”
“Grou! Grou!”
“Grao!”
“What a wonderful mood!” thought a kobold guard. Despite not participating, the guard was infected by the joyful cheers of his tribal family, which made him suppress his urge to abandon his post and join in.
He knew it was not the right thing to do. One mistake in this forest means death. That was the truth of this world. After all, he learned this fact when two of his brothers never made it back from a hunt. The tribe couldn't afford to lose any more of its members. Vowing to protect every single tribe member, the guard must become stronger and fulfill his duty.
At that moment, something came out of the forest. One of the other guards noticed it and called over the rest.

The kobold guard went closer to the unknown intruder with his trusty club and bark shield equipment. Upon closer inspection, this intruder looks like a small ball of light. It glowed a delicate shine so beautiful it was mesmerizing.
More balls of light came out of the forest and attracted a few of the celebrating kobolds towards them. This eventually led to a gathering of the whole tribe in front of the levitating balls of light.
“What a weird sight.”, the kobold was right to question this strange scene. Balls of light created by the spell [Light] are not a natural phenomenon and without a mage, it would be impossible for them to appear. However, this is something a kobold without any knowledge of magic, will never be able to understand. Due to this reason, the kobold was not able to notice the urgency of the situation.
“Graaa…”
“Grou…ahhh.”
“Gou…ahhh.”
None of the voices sounded weird to the kobold. It may not have been very suitable for the event, but it isn’t surprising for some of the kobolds to be astounded by what they are seeing.
“Grouuu…”
“Gra…!”
“Gr..urgh.”
“Grrr? Grahh! Gruuuu…”
“Huh? That sound was weird. What’s happening?”, the prolonged cry of one of the tribe’s members attracted the guard’s attention.
“Grrr?”
With that thought, the kobold guard turned around towards the sound. What he saw was a distortion in the air and a kobold being consumed by it.
“Graaaaaaaa!”
This shout would be the last thing he would do, for a shadow approached and decapitated the mortified kobold guard.

“Gra?!Graaaaaa!”
“Grou?!Grouuahhh!”
Oh, come on, that went so well though. Why did that one kobold have to turn around, eh?
Everything went so incredibly well while taking down everybody besides the five warriors. I didn’t think using [Light] would be so useful, despite being a weaker version of [Shine]. Well, I should be glad that [Light] had the function of being remotely moveable, even if it does cost a bit more mana to use. It distracted the whole tribe long enough for me to kill seven of the kobolds, but that one guard had to notice.
That just goes to show, that light shows are a universal way to capture the attention of animals and people.
Can't be helped now. Holy Protection, Imbue Fire, Earth Wall!
My recent hunting sessions have taught me, that the receiver of an ambush will be vulnerable during the initial moments, after being ambushed. It's like your brain is trying to work out the sudden rush of information, but your mind suddenly goes completely blank. This is the time I need to take advantage of it and control the flow of the battle. The last two kobold guards need to be taken down!

*swish swish swish*
With a combination of [Enhanced Claws], [Mana Strike] and [Imbue Fire], my fire cloaked claws tore through the throats of my two foes. I may still be smaller than a kobold, but you don’t need to be large to cut somebody down.
Once finished, I opened my storage and shoved the 3, now dead, kobold guards into it. That makes ten kobold corpses.
Proficiency requirement fulfilled. [Mana Control Lv. 3] evolved into [Mana Control Lv. 4]
Ja, finally! Better control means better efficiency. Storing the kobold bodies costs a ton of mana, and I’m already down to 100 mana. I need a level up.
“Gurarghhhhhhhh!”
By the time I was done celebrating, I heard the war cry of a remaining kobold. I use [Haste] and aimed a [Firebolt] towards the direction of an approaching kobold [Enhanced Enemy Sense] warned me from. The warrior took the spell head-on without protecting himself. Now staggered, I exploited this advantage and struck him down with my claws.

Time to focus now. It’s a showdown between me against four angry kobolds.
With their initial befuddlement gone, the other kobolds noticed me killing their tribesmen and stormed towards me, roaring with uncontrollable rage. Are they spitting up blood?
Rock Blast, Earth Strike!
I should stop their movements first. Now that they are enraged, if I can control them, they should be easier to predict.
…Easier said than done. They ignored my attempts to cripple them and powered through my attacks. Two of them lunged their spears at me, but it was easy enough to dodge. I ducked and cast a [Smite] on the right kobold.
A radiant light steadily grew on top of my horns. So brilliant is that glow, that even I was slightly entranced by it. The spell shot towards that kobold and basked his head in holy light.
“Graaaa!”

Without letting my momentum slow down, I jumped over the next spear strike and stomped on it.
Acquisition requirement fulfilled. [Acrobatic Lv. 1] acquired
I fired off a [Fire] at my assailant but was stopped mid-way at dispatching him by a thrown spear. I jumped away. But I did not let this chance escape.
Using my new [Acrobatic] skill to perform a dexterous somersault during my jump, I infused a lot of my mana into my tail and used [Mana Strike] to send the kobold’s head flying.

Mana is back to max. Only two left.
*squash*
Uhh, I mean 1 left. Looks like one of my [Rock Blast] just now triggered and shot a rock into the spear-less kobold’s head.
Oh well, Identify.

Prediction The ability of the user to predict certain results. The accuracy of the prediction is determined by the level of the ability
Neat skill.
“Grao. Grao. Graouu!”
“Kra. Kisha.”
I don’t know what you just said there, but I do understand what you meant. If you want your revenge, then come at me! I’ve been itching to fight somebody like you for a very long time now.
I’m feeling excited. A fight against a boss-like monster, although, I seem more like a boss monster than him.
Hmm. But for some reason, I can't get this bad feeling away, that I had ever since the start of this raid.
Sigh, I’m letting my mind wander again. Focus!
Whatever it is, it can be dealt with later.
‘Cause the main show starts now!

*Note: This story is on hiatus. I intend to pick it up again, but the mood of my life has shifted for the time being and I'm going to be working on a side project for a bit.* What would you give to live the life of your dreams? What kind of deal would you make? And when you were there, forced to stare your dreams in the eye and live them every day, how long would it be... before they broke you? Author's note: This is my first excursion outside the realm of villain fan fiction and I welcome feedback. The thing I've loved most about RRL so far is the potential for writing to be an interactive experience with excited readers. That said, also, the primary genre this is intended for is the blossoming realm of LitRPG. Namely, a slice of life tale in the manner of Grimgar or Re:Zero. So, likewise, I don't expect there will ever be a clear beginning-middle-and-end type of pattern to this story. It will likewise always be a bit more of a reactionary, exploratory novel into realms unknown - much like the 1800 travel-novel theme used by Jules Verne. Or, at least, that is my ambition.
