The gates swing gradually open with a loud screech that grates the nerves and itches the senses. Allowing you a brief glimpse of what lies beyond the gate, before swinging open fully to let you inside the great Halls of the Dwarves. Bronze statues much like the ones that guard the city, line up along corridor, their gleaming bronze Warhammers raised to the ceiling to create a sort of arc. The floor paved with blocks of stone that have gathered dust, suggest that it has been long while since someone has been in here. Cautiously you pass through the gates and enter the hall. The gates slamming shut behind instantly, the second you pass through. You lick your lips and walk slowly down the hallway, your hand never far from your weapon, when you notice at the end of the hallway a massive tapestry hanging off the wall in front of you, with two corridors splitting off to either side of it.
You walk closer to get a better look at the faded tapestry and see images of Dwarves battling a huge red scaled monster with yellow snakelike eyes and wings. The Dwarves equipped with some type of black plated armor, battle the creature valiantly using weapons that call down the elements. Your eyes move to the scene directly above the first, where the Dwarves victorious haul the chained Dragon down into their dungeon. The final scene sewn into the fabric of the tapestry is the baleful yellow eyes of the dragon looking out from it's dungeon. Eyes that stare right at you. Praying the dragon is long dead, you look down the sides corridors to decide, which way to go when you feel another gust of wind.
Whatever had caused the gust of wind was close, you just know it. You look both ways trying to figure out which way to go, when you hear scrabbling coming from the corridor to your left and harsh, ragged breathing, just like before at the entrance to the cave. Hoping the creature hadn't somehow managed to follow you here, you quickly move to the corridor on the right and walk along the dimly lit narrow passage that leads you to a small room. Within the tiny room is a cot, a night stand carrying an empty silver flagon and a bookshelf filled with scrolls.

You glance over towards the doorway on the other side of the room and hear the light pitter patter of footsteps scurrying away. Curious to see what it is, you chase after the creature. Blindly following the creature through a series of narrow passageways that lead you further downward. Eventually you hear the skittering feet stop and you slow down. Readying your weapon, you peek your head out around the corner to see another equally bare room with only a night stand and bed. Balled up into the far corner of the room is a young Dwarven female in a tattered blue dress. Her greasy brown hair covering her face, and her feet dirty. Your wondering how in the abyss she got in here, when she let's out a loud shriek at the sight of you appearing in the room. Loud enough to wake the dead.
You swiftly stride across the room, grab hold of her and clamp a hand across her mouth. She struggles in your arms, looking up at you with bright emerald green eyes full of hate, but you tighten your grip on here. Until you feel her calm down, you whisper softly in her ear that your not here not harm her. She blinks up at you, the hatred dissipating from her eyes. You tell her, that'll let her go, if she stops screaming. The Dwarf eagerly bobs her head up and down. You release her and take a step backwards, holding your hands up to show her you mean no harm. The young Dwarf looks at you in surprise. Then begins babbling about dark mages in a chamber not far from here, who captured her with a few other Dwarves searching the ruins here for treasure. Apparently the mages are trying to summon a powerful demon by sacrificing her and her friends. She begs you to rescue them, before they're all killed.

5. Do you ask her if there is another way out of here, and try to avoid the Dark Mage's attention?
You ask the Dwarf, if there is a way to avoid the Dark Mage's? And feel a gob of spit hit you on the cheek. She calls you a coward and wimp, and curses you for all eternity. Refusing to rise to the bait, you decide to find your own way out on here. Careful to avoid the chamber, where you hear chanting, you make a swift escape down a side passage.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
