《Ranker's Return》Chapter 653

“The name of the instance dungeon I’m currently in is called ‘Hideout of the Vengeful Spirits’. It has been three days since I’ve entered this instance dungeon, but I’ve only met one type of monster.”
Since entering the instance dungeon, Hyeonu had fought only one monster. Its name was ‘vengeful spirit of an abandoned demonic creature’.
“Oh, the monsters came out. Look over there.”
The moment Hyeonu was about to explain about the vengeful spirit of an abandoned demonic creature, they appeared at the right timing.
“Originally, the vengeful spirit of an abandoned demonic creature has different forms. There are some that are the same and some that are different. It is natural. Their appearance before death is different, so shouldn’t their appearance after resurrection be different?”
It was as Hyeonu said. The appearance of the vengeful spirit of an abandoned demonic creature was varied, ranging from small wolves to giant birds.
“The most annoying thing is that I don’t know who is strong and who is weak. I don’t have all the information on the demonic creatures.”
They had power proportional to their stats during their life. In other words, if their level from before becoming a spirit was high, their level after they became a spirit would also be high. However, there was no way for Hyeonu to figure out this information without fighting them. After all, the demon world was still an unknown world.
There was little known information about it. Large guilds never disclosed the information they knew. What was known was mainly about the demonic creatures near Etono. The information about demons was still top secret, and few even knew about the demon nobles at all.
“Then I will try hunting.”
Hyeonu walked toward the incoming vengeful spirits with the Mysterious Sky Sword in his hand.
“They aren’t like normal spirit monsters. They can exercise physical strength.”
The original meaning of ‘vengeful spirit’ meant a soul with resentment. Nevertheless, the vengeful spirit of an abandoned demonic creature had the same quality as an undead. The ground sank deeply when they used their bodies.
“Spirits or ghosts can’t exercise physical force. To be exact, they use magic power to attack. Meanwhile, these guys are different. Look, didn’t the ground sink when they moved? It is easy to think of them as undead, not vengeful spirits.”
Hyeonu finished talking and moved. A huge dark blue beak pierced the place where Hyeonu had just been standing.
“It is dirty and big. As expected, it is the size of a demonic creature in the demon world. It has no shortage of strength and speed.”
Hyeonu was standing on top of the dark blue beak. This was due to his use of Mysterious Sky Steps. He utilized Mysterious Sky Steps to move backward before using the effect of the Limited Freedom shoes to step in the air and return to his original position. It happened so fast that it looked like Hyeonu had teleported.
“However, the weakness is obvious. These guys are basically very vulnerable to the fire attribute. I don’t have the fire attribute, so I’m going to push with strength.

Hyeonu didn’t stop talking as he swung the Mysterious Sky Sword. Strong purple pure energy extended from the Mysterious Sky Sword. There was the sound of the wind being cut, and the body of the giant bird was split in half.
The split bird didn’t bleed. It just disappeared as dark blue smoke.

“The defense and health are a bit weaker than normal demonic creatures. It seems to be related to the name ‘vengeful spirit’.” Hyeonu continued to talk while picking up the gold coins that had fallen to the ground. He didn’t rest his mouth for a moment. It was as if he couldn’t tolerate any silence in the audio.
-No, what is this...
-No matter how I look at it, that isn’t a normal demonic creature.
-It seems to be at least a low-grade or intermediate demonic creature.
-It isn’t the lowest grade.
-It was sent away in one blow.
The viewers were amazed by the series of processes that Hyeonu showed. They were even more surprised since it had been a long time since Hyeonu last showed his hunts. The difference became even greater because they had watched the demon world hunts on other streams before watching Hyeonu’s.
The large guilds had six people in a party to hunt the demonic creatures. They had taken quite a while, spending around 10 to 20 minutes to kill three or four demonic creatures. Yet Hyeonu killed one in an instant, and he didn’t receive anyone’s help.
“Next, I’ll deal with that little one over there. I’ve killed it a few times, and it is more agile than the bird I just killed.”
The moment Hyeonu’s words ended, the wolf kicked off lightly against the ground. The wolf didn’t come in a straight line but a zigzag. It was just that the speed was so fast that it did not feel like it was moving from left to right.
“Isn’t it moving very fast? Don’t be flustered. In any case, this guy’s target is obvious.”
Hyeonu shook his left index finger, and his lips curled up in a smile. Then he stabbed the Mysterious Sky Sword forward like a thunderbolt. The Mysterious Sky Sword penetrated the wolf’s snout. It was as if the wolf had rushed toward the Mysterious Sky Sword.

Hyeonu stared at the wolf that disappeared as smoke before turning his head to speak to the viewers again: “It will come from the front anyway. You can easily hit it by predicting the attack. Isn’t it simple?”
“I’m speechless, Master dude. What are you saying now?” Tang-E shook his head seeing Hyeonu’s behavior.
He was speechless.
‘Don’t you know that it is only possible for you alone?’ Tang-E commented inwardly. If it was the Hyeonu that Tang-E knew, there was a good possibility that Hyeonu already knew this. That meant Hyeonu was just teasing the viewers.

‘This is so easy. Why can’t you do it?’
-Right. Tang-E’s words are right.
-It is right even if I’m hearing it a hundred times.
-If this were the case, I would be hunting in the demon world.
-I think this is also a strategy. I’m so frustrated, frustrated.
The viewers were like Tang-E. If they could do what Hyeonu showed, they would all be rankers. Hyeonu used the Mysterious Sky Steps and spoke while avoiding the attacks of the vengeful spirits: “Ah, you can’t do this? Then shall I show you something easier?”
-Yes, something easier.
-This is too difficult.
-Let’s be easy, easy.
The viewers were very happy with Hyeonu’s words. The techniques that Hyeonu showed against the giant bird and small wolf were techniques that the viewers couldn’t follow. They were techniques that could only be shown when both experience and strength were available.
“Then I’ll make it easy according to the requirements of the audience.”
Hyeonu swung the Mysterious Sky Sword, and dozens of purple pure energies cut through the space. The vengeful spirit of an abandoned demonic creature turned into smoke and disappeared.

The Mysterious Sky Sword was inserted back into the sheath with a light sound.
“How is it? Isn’t it easy? You just have to beat them up,” Hyeonu said with a smile.
Despite that, no one could smile except for Hyeonu. None of them could smile at all.
***
Hyeonu continued to hunt in the instance dungeon. However, the fact that he made no progress for three days didn’t change because he turned on the stream. It was more or less the same as before.
“Um... It seems that I’ve been hunting too much. Let’s proceed with other content. Is that okay?”
Hyeonu stopped hunting. He thought it was impolite to viewers to only show them hunting on the stream.
-This isn’t bad. Still, it is good to do something else.
-Honestly, it was just hunting, but I wasn’t bored.
-There is Tang-E, and it is fun to watch Reina.
Of course, just hunting was fine with viewers.
It was because the hunting of Reina, Hyeonu, and Tang-E was fun to watch. The three of them looked surprisingly good together. Moreover, they didn’t stop talking during the hunt. It was only Hyeonu who felt it was inadequate.
‘Still, I have to do what I prepared...’
Hyeonu had anticipated that today’s stream would go this way and prepared something in advance. He said, “Just because it is other content doesn’t mean it is anything huge. I am going to do a light conversation. Reina or I will look at the questions in the chat room and answer them.”
-This type of thing is always welcome.
-Can I ask questions now?
-So what is your relationship?
-Are you really not dating?
The moment Hyeonu’s words ended, the viewers repeated the same messages they sent at the beginning of the stream.
‘I knew it would be like this. In any case... I have their attention.’
Hyeonu tsked inwardly. The viewers’ questions were exactly like he expected.
‘Let’s shift their attention.’
Hyeonu started to say what he had prepared to divert their attention. It was something he had to mention in today’s stream.
“First of all, I have something to tell you before you start asking questions. You can see it as a type of announcement. It is a notice related to New Moon.”
-New Moon? The audition?
-Right, what is happening with that?
-Surely you haven’t picked them all already?
-No way? I have already applied.
The viewers listened to Hyeonu and made various guesses. In the chat window, rumors spread in an instant that ‘New Moon’s audition is actually a smoke screen’. However, the guesses were completely different from what Hyeonu was trying to say.
‘I haven’t picked any players. What type of smokescreen is there?’
Hyeonu shook his head and said, “Um... It isn’t like that. Sooner or later, we plan to pick the first successful candidates through the screening process. If no one meets the criteria, the successful candidates might be the final qualified people.”
Selecting players through New Moon was a must. Currently, he couldn’t obtain players through other methods even if he wanted to.
-How are you setting the standards?
-Is it a rare class and the fourth class advancement?
-Is the above person a fool? There are fewer fourth-class players who don’t have rare classes.
-Ah, right ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ. It is usually like this except for priests.
The viewers talked about Hyeonu’s selection criteria and how the small number of successful applicants meant that the standards were going to be strict.
“The selection standards aren’t that tricky. It would be nice if you have received your fourth class change, but... there is still a lot of time until the Spring League. You only need to be level 270.”
-Then specs aren’t the problem.
-Isn’t that too low for a professional gamer?
The viewers thought that Hyeonu’s standards were too low. Based on what was known, most professional gamers had already done their fourth class advancement or were close to it. Compared to them, level 270 was really low.
“The part I am paying special attention to is personality. In addition, your past. I will never select someone who acted as a proxy knight in the arena or a PKer. In addition, I won’t select people who have caused a controversy on the community sites. I’m only going to pick people who really want to be professional gamers.”
The chat window exploded at Hyeonu’s resolute announcement. It was because the standards were tricky in a different direction from what they had expected.

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!

Luster
Growing up with her recently deceased mother’s addiction and her own struggles with gender identity, June Fujiwara was not a nice person. Gaining powers from nearly being murdered didn’t change that, and neither did becoming a mercenary to fund her transition. It took horrific manipulation, the resulting trauma, and the family that helped her through it all. Luster is a derivative work based on Worm by Wildbow (John C. McCrae) that begins prior to Worm and although it doesn't show straight away, the story is very AU.
