Chapter 44 - A Female Body
“You’re kidding me.” I said flatly, staring down at the naked body below me.
Pale skin. Slender arms and legs. An hourglass body with a large amount of weight pressing against my chest.
I was missing my large sausage.
Hm.
Strangely, I did not feel the urge to fondle or even touch them. They felt foreign, yes, but not the least attractive.
“What… happened?” I asked out loud.
While doing so, I noticed the pitch of my voice had become noticeably higher. My jawline also felt less defined and my cheeks a little softer. Not to mention the long locks of hair flowing down my shoulders. It was blonde, at least.
[Your skill {Potato Body} has different cooldowns for the different bodies available.]
“Oh, Eve, you’re back?”
[Well, I am your assistant, after all. Also, you should put on some clothes.]
I looked down at myself once more. “Yeah. You’re probably right.”
A few minutes later, after slipping on that same robe Red had given me- which was incredibly tight in some places, cough, the hips and chest- I sat back.
[You probably don’t feel like touching yourself much, am I right?]
She was right. No longer did I feel impressed with my body parts or peeping on other girls. I just felt… normal.
Which was strange, because I was literally living my dream right now.
[Once again, it’s a side effect of your skill.]
“Yeah, well…” I looked down at my thing, bony fingers. “What do I do now, then? Now that my plans have all gone to waste.”
I didn’t actually expect her to respond.
[Well, you can’t return to school, can you? You also shouldn’t be seen by anyone you know, since they might suspect. Not that you know anyone, though.]
Did she just indirectly insult me?
“You’re right. But when did you know so much about my life?”
[I am your assistant. It’s my job to know.]
Right. I raised an eyebrow. “So what do you suggest I do?”
[You could practice your magic. Or train with the sword to complete your class quest. Or kill monsters.]

Wow. Out of all of those options, not one seemed easy.
Wait, did I just…
Was my attitude changing just because I’d transformed into a girl? Had I always been this lazy?
“Aargh!” I dug my hands into my scalp and shook my head around.
Soon enough, if I didn’t keep a close watch, I might completely turn into a different person.
“I guess I’ll just choose the third option, then.”
It wasn’t like I knew any other spells apart from ‘collapse’ and my void magic. Nd, well, without the additional restrictions from the ring, I’d probably cause a lot of trouble. And for some reason, I wanted to test out this new body. If it was half as strong as my human one…
A smile came to my lips.
A half hour later, I strode out the back door of the house, a longsword in my hand.
I’d borrowed it from the basement. No one would probably notice as there were dozens upon dozens of different swords there. I’d chosen this specific one since it was almost identical to one I used to train with as a child.
Yes, even if I was a royal, sword fighting was a compulsory subject we’d have to take in school.
Since I didn’t want to be spotted, I’d decided to take the back alley route to the place where I’d fought the maldakive snakes yesterday. I figured I’d scout it out first, and if there weren’t any of those monsters remaining, it was as good a place as any to train.
“Allllright.” I yawned, stretching my arms, back and neck, and breaking into a jog. It didn’t take long before I reached the spot. It was a leafy, overgrown area at the end of the street, surrounded by the forest and empty houses. The overbearing canopy of the trees provided some much-needed protection from the hot midday sun.
Before I started, though, I wanted to test out the class skill ‘element infusion’.
“Show skill information for ‘element infusion’.”

Element Infusion

The most basic skill of the {Warrior-Mage} class. This skill allows you to use spells on a specific weapon or item. The weapon or item will retain the spell’s properties, and it’s shape may be altered depending on the type of spell. The spell may also be altered depending on the type of item.

Alright. This was expected. It was basically an enchantment of sorts.
“Element infusion.”
[{Element Infusion} has been activated. Cast any spell onto an item.]
The only spell I knew was ‘collapse’. Using it would be risky, since I might cause the destruction of the entire area. But honestly, I couldn’t wait any longer.
I rested the sword flat on the ground and stepped back a few paces before holding out my hand.
“Collapse.”
The power flowed to my fingertips, and the euphoria began to fill me. However, I pushed it aside and focused on controlling the magic. I couldn’t depend on the ring forever, and if I destroyed this body right here and now, I really would have nothing to do for the rest of the day.
A sudden, stinging pain shot up my hand.
The more I held back the power, the more the pain increased. Within moments, it was almost unbearable.
I looked down and watched my hand glow brighter and brighter, ready to explode at any second.
But then, all of a sudden, the pain disappeared along with the feeling of elation.
The ground in front of me remained perfectly intact, apart from a few cracks around the place where the sword lay.
The sword itself flashed once, twice and then lay still.
[{Element Infusion} has been successfully used. The {Item Index} has been created. A new item has been added to your {Item Index}.]
A separate window appeared beside the fallen sword.

Longsword (Element Infused)
Tier: Common
Enchantment Type: Element Infused
Element: Earth
Enchantment: Collapse
Current Xera Storage: 610/1000
A normal longsword, infused with a beginner level earth spell; collapse. This spell causes the earth to break and crumble when the sword is plunged into the ground.

Great. So now items had information windows too.
[Oh? It’s been a long time since someone has unlocked the {Item Index}. Although, to be fair, it’s been a long time since anyone has used this version of the system.]
“Oh, hi, Eve.” I said dryly. It kind of annoyed me that she kept popping up at random times.
[Hello! Just came by to see how you were doing. To open the index window, use the command ‘open index window’!]
“Yeah, yeah…” I muttered. “Open index window.”

[You will only see the information for specific items that have at least one of these two properties: Must be directly altered or affected by you, or, must have a deep connection with you.]
“Yeah, and what the hell is that supposed to mean?” I shot back. The properties sounded so vague. “What counts as ‘directly affected’? If I pissed on the sword, does that mean I can see its information?”
[Well… no.]
“Then can you elaborate?”
[It’s hard to explain. If you have a skill that directly affects it when it is activated, that will count, such as your element infusion. It also counts if you made the sword yourself.]
I sighed. “Alright, whatever.” Seeing the information for an item was useful, but not particularly if I had to go through a whole process before doing so. I didn’t have time for that sort of thing if I had to fight an opponent.
I grabbed the hilt of the sword and immediately felt a warm sensation. I had been around it long enough to recognize the feeling of magic.
[I wouldn’t put that into the ground if I were you.]
“And why is that?” I asked, the tip mere centimetres away from touching the soil.
[Because you’re going to regret it. Have you forgotten that you have infinite xera capacity?]
“No…” She was probably right.
So, I flipped the sword around, stretched out my legs, leant forward, and tensed my muscles. I felt the long shoulder joint of my robe tear a little, and mentally apologised to Red.
It was time to get back into the action once more.

Dark Matter
In the year 2023, scientists investigating the nature of dark matter caused a blackout throughout the entire world of Coranth. With this blackout came the appearance of supernatural and near-magical elemental abilities able to be wielded by all. By harnessing the dark matter in the environment, even ordinary humans now accessed powers that would have been deemed fantasy. These abilities include Wind, Fire, Lightning, Water, and Terra, being the five natural elements of which dark matter is absorbed by the planet itself. Additionally, the two moons orbiting Coranth offer the "Superior" elements of Dark and Light. The year is now 2041, and Dark Matter will follow the story of an adolescent boy named Raiden Sullivan in a dystopian future, 16 years old, eldest of 2, and son to Marcus Sullivan. Raiden is an intelligent young man belonging to a poor family with an absentee mother. He partakes in daily chores to cover living expenses after school and his home life is surrounded by his caring father and younger sister. In truth, this is my take on urban fantasy with slight LitRPG that keeps the "magic" elements somewhat scientific for a more realistic story. In using the dark matter surrounding our universe, humans can now harness elemental abilities as well as absorb dark matter from the beasts/monsters to further strengthen their abilities. For the most part, that'll be the main premise of the power system. Full transparency, this will be the first story I write and also the first story I publish, so please be patient with me. For some context, I'm an avid reader and after 4 or so years of only consuming, I feel that it might be time to try my hand at writing instead. Please feel free to add your opinions and criticism, it would be much appreciated. With that said, I hope you enjoy Dark Matter!

Parallels
Parallels are a constant in life. Our friends' lives often run parallel to ours; we share similar experiences or tastes- perhaps even both. Sometimes, however, opposites attract- and our lives run perpendicular. In that case, we are not attracted by similarities; rather, we are attracted to the differences in others. So, what happens when two parallels are broken apart? What might happen to them? Are they forever doomed to run alongside each other, never seeing one another, never meeting? Or, perhaps, might they be spun about? Could these lines that formerly ran alongside one another meet? Could they possibly be set perpendicular? Any feedback is welcome, so long as it is constructive. Also, you may not use any characters, ideas, places, or what have you that I present here without my explicit permission. A note: This is a story which I began over a year ago, but never got around to finishing- it feels about time to really get it going. Now, there are a couple of things about the story, and myself, that need to be said. First and foremost, there's a slow start, but by the third-fourth chapter things should be speeding up a bit. Secondly, in regards to release speed and/or word count per chapter, I make no promises- my schedule is fairly random, and in regards to word count, I will cut off any chapter at any point that feels appropriate to me- that may include cliffhangers, if necessary. I'm not trying to reach a specific word count, I am trying to create a cohesive story, with pseudo-appropriate chapter breaks. This means I will also not rush a half-baked release for the sake of getting a release out. Thirdly, I will make any edits, anywhere in the story and at any time, that strike me as necessary- typically being wording and/or formatting changes, but I may also decide to change major plot points- in that case I would put a notification in the next chapter released. Finally, and most importantly, I am a Christian; this story is intended to at least moderately reflect those values. So, if you particularly dislike any of these things, feel free to look elsewhere, and don't let the door hit you on the way out. God bless, friends.
