Chapter 58 – Birthday (2)
“This is my gift for you,” Chen Feng changed the subject and handed Chen Daiyu a wrapped box. This caught her by surprise, she hadn’t even expected her birthday to be celebrated much less for everyone to get her gifts.
Seeing her surprised expression, old man Shan’s heart was filled with pity and heartache.
“Here’s mine.” Shan Yijun took the gift he hid behind the door and gave it to Chen Daiyu.
“I won’t forget mine ta-da!” Lu Ji took out a ring box from his pocket and put it on Chen Daiyu’s hand.
“Would you like to open them now?” Old man Shan asked.
“Yeah!” Chen daiyu nodded her head like a chicken pecking rice. She put everything else aside and started with the biggest gift- her dad’s.
She slowly and carefully opened the present as if it was a fragile thing, when she saw what it was her eyes shone.
Just what I needed!
It was a tablet with high specs at first glance, she studiously read the package and noted its speed and its uses. Even if she wasn’t going to use it much, Chen Feng wanted all of his daughter’s things to be the very best.
Just judging by what she had at the mall, the tablet was one of the best pieces of technology available.
Everyone could tell she loved the gift.
“Yu Yu why don’t you open mine?” Shan Yijun pouted. Chen Daiyu nodded, she carefully put the tablet on the Go board ignoring the game that was set up, unwilling to let it touch the ground. Lu Ji had to hold in a chuckle.
She picked up Shan Yijun’s gift. It was thin and long but it was as heavy as the tablet Chen Feng gave her. When she opened it, she raised a brow.

It was a butterfly knife, when she picked it up to observe the blade Lu Ji told her nervously, “be careful holding that.”
“Ok,” Chen Daiyu answered. She opened it and observed the craftsmanship of the blade. It was almost as thin as paper, it looked exquisite too.
“Hehe~ dad gave a knife collection for my birthday, but I think this one suits you better” Shan Yijun started off proud, but then he stared at the butterfly knife… he wasn’t even sure if he would be getting one next year…
Seeing his sad face, Chen Daiyu smiled comfortingly. “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it”
Shan Yijun nodded.
She then next moved to Lu Ji’s gift, while ignoring his smug face.
Chen Daiyu opened the ring box, as expected it was a ring. It was small but it’s still too big for any of her fingers, so she put it on her thumb instead.
“Thank you uncle!” Chen daiyu flashed a smile at him and Lu Ji froze.
“Aren’t you at least going to ask what it’s for??” Lu ji asked dumbly.
“Uncle, although I’m only at pre-school, I knew that rings are for fingers,” Chen Daiyu pointed at herself, feeling wronged. Everyone looked at Lu Ji as if he was an idiot.
Lu Ji almost cried, before the word “idiot” could forever imprint on his name, he explained what the ring was for.
“That ring can help you if you are in trouble” Lu Ji took her hand and pointed at the circular gem. “If you twist this to the right a bit forcefully, it will send us your location. This is for emergencies only, like last time you were kidnapped.” Lu Ji emphasized. Chen Daiyu’s mouth went ‘O’ in understanding.
Lu Ji could only sigh.

“Ahem” Old man Shan coughed to get their attention. When Chen Daiyu looked at him, he told her his gift
“Yu Yu, my gift for you is to allow you to train under me with the other children. I can see that you are fascinated by our training sessions everytime you come by. Although it’ll be hard at first, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. I’m not forcing you”
Chen Daiyu’s eyes shone and answered enthusiastically. “I would love to!”
This is probably the best thing she had reaped today, training, she could also make Shan Yijun join in. After all, training martial arts in the attic would be a problem once they grew up.
Chen Daiyu could feel all her plans finally starting to take shape, she would do anything to make sure her family was safe.

A Prose of Years
For decades, spiritualist Evert Kallstrom and his team have joined in humanity’s millennia-long fight against the beasts. Wielding their weapons and their ki, they fought and killed these great threats to civilization. And yet, despite their efforts, humanity was losing traction in the war. In the last fifty years alone, more cities had been overrun than in all of known history. While most thought the great beasts natural, a few knew the terrible truth. They were the product of a dark lord, who desired neither fame nor wealth nor power. Instead, his sole purpose was the genocide of humanity. While their peers dithered, a small faction of the strongest mankind had to offer—including Evert Kallstrom and his team—set out towards the Deadlands to find and confront this dark lord. After weeks of travel, twenty-one spiritualists found themselves approaching an ancient fortress wherein rested a being known only as the Eastern Guardian. All they found was death. But death has other plans for Evert. Evert bolts awake in his 16 year old body near his hometown, decades in the past. He is confused, poor and weak. But with grit, sweat, and years of experience, he won't let the future repeat itself. That level of strength won't be enough by itself (it wasn’t last time) and victory is hardly assured (he’ll need to reach farther and higher than he ever did), but Evert refuses to squander a second chance. [Other tags: First Person POV, Hard Magic, Faulty Memory] Volume 1 is complete and has been fully released. My current intention is not to write any sequel volumes. That said, I have also released appendices (SPOILERS) that cover the worldbuilding and future story-that-never-was. Comments suggesting fixes for grammar, misspellings, etc. appreciated. Note: If you came here from Candlelit Lives, these stories have nothing in common.
