《Changing My Life with A Level System》4. One last time
Advertisement
Buckets of water came pouring down from the dark clouded sky and were collected in small ponds across the streets, that reflected the neon glowing billboards. Before a dark ally stood Bao, in his hands the napkin with the black, squiggly writing of his friend on it, naming the exact street before him. His eyes stared down into the pitch darkness, the abyss because little light reached down the ally, he didn't expect any less from such shady business, it properly fulfilled all the cliches he had in mind. Descending this path could mean never coming back again, it could mean disappointing his family and himself again and more than that it that one year of hell would have been for nothing.
Like frozen he stood there, not moving an inch, not even a muscle was twitching from his tense posture, only his chest was going up and down at every deep breath he took. Ning gave him a great opportunity but at the same time it also loaded a heavy burden on his shoulders since he would regret not taking this chance for the rest of his life, he knew that would be the case.
It was his dream to live an adventure like the heroes in his stories, how could he not take this possibility? He took one last deep breath, put the napkin in his right pocket and lift his left feet high up, higher than it should have and with all his body he took the first step into the abyss, the unknown.
-30 minutes before-
"Ah, ah, ah, ah, where are you going?"
Bao froze in the middle of going down the stairs, he didn't expect his moth to say anything, since they never talked to each other after he came back.
"My friend Ning invited me over to his house for coffee, we didn't meet for a year after all." he responded, with a baffled expression.

"You shouldn't hang out with that kid anymore, he was the cause why you even started using... using that thing there."
"Mom! We already had this discussion, I was the one who asked him if such a VR existed, he just gave me the information and it was MY decision to use it, he is not to blame and you know that. While he was worried about me disappearing for a year, what did you do? You didn't even bother to visit me, do you even care about what happens to me!" He was screaming at this point in the discussion.
After realizing what he just said to his own mother with both eyes wide open, he fled down the stairs towards the exit door.
"Bao, wait! I... I di..."
Her sentence was cut off midway by the slamming door behind him and without halting he walked away.
- Present -
It felt like it took him an eternity to reach the internet cafe down the ally but he finally did it. Only now he noticed that even his underwear was soaked but there was no way he would go back now, not after what happened.
He quickly entered the shop, his clothes dripping down to the floor.
"How may I help you, Sir?" The attendant carefully inspected him.
"I have a reservation with the name NW."
His stare at him became even more aggressive, it felt like a tiger was just observing his prey.
"Of course, Sir please follow me. I'll also let you bring some spare clothes given your current condition."
They went through a big room that was filled with the constant sound of blowing computers and talking users, in short, it looked like a normal internet cafe to Bao. After reaching the end of the room the attendant opened a small metal door that was secured with multiple procedures.

"Down here please" He held the door open for Bao.
Against his expectation, there was no room behind the door but what seemed to be an elevator and after the attendant also entered a robotic voice came out of the speakers.
"Which floor would you like to visit?"
"Floor zero."
Without a sound the elevator descendent.
"On this card is written your booth number, simply insert it to the device on the small table and connect yourself to the system. Your clothes should be already there if you need anything just press the button at the side of the door and someone will come to assist you."
"How much time do I have?"
"As much as you want, Sir."
"Okay, please wake me up after three hours."
"As you wish, have a great dive."
It was the first time after a whole year that he would re-connect to the VR system. As he walked down the corridor between two rows of booths, he continued to say to himself "Only one more time", convinced that will stop after this dive.
After finally entering his small cabin, number twenty-six, he laid down on a small bed that felt rather uncomfortable as it was pressing against his bony body. But that won't really matter any more once he enters the VR-World. As if it were daily routine he inserted the card, grabbed the cable beside his bed and swiftly inserted it in the entry on his neck. The familiar sensation of a slight tingling spreading throughout his body let him put a smile on his face. With everything being ready he laid down and dived into a new reality, into virtual reality.

Shift (Ben 10+DCU Fanfiction)
Omnitrix+ DCU, what's not to like? The main character will not be Ben Tennyson, rather someone from our world who gains the Omnitrix Hello! This fanfiction Shift is what I wanted to do for an homage to what I thought were underrated pieces of media, Ben 10 and some DCU characters. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t add context to two of the major works that inspired Shift, Dial, and A Practical Guide to Evil. Dial is another ben 10 fanfiction, however that story takes place in the MCU, and with an adult that is already a grown-up at the beginning of the story. Dial, by my own accounts, is more superficially Like shift, even though the Omnitrix is a central device in both. My protagonist starts out around 18 years old, so is less serious and can build relationships with some of the junior justice league members, and then later on in the story meet the Justice League officially. The tone will be more light-hearted at the beginning of the story as teenagers are known to use sarcasm and jokes at each other’s expense. Furthermore, in Dial, the protagonist has a well-developed knowledge of the MCU which he uses to have knowledge on events and characters, that the character in Shift will not have. While the MC will have some knowledge of people's abilities, lesser-known characters and people's real identities will be not included as much, but the MC of Shift will have some knowledge. APGTE's influence is deeper than Dials'. The epigraphs at the beginning of every chapter are an example of that, a place for light-hearted jokes and worldbuilding that's not pure exposition, but I also want to incorporate narrative stories to Shift (heroes win more than lose, providence, etc) on a lighthearted scale. While the heroes of Shift will have to work to win against villains, the MC of Shift will be allowed limited precognition, through narratives tropes and archetypes as a trade-off of less knowledge of the DCU. For example, a villain a hero faces might monologue, but the MC will not instinctively know how to counter every villain they encounter. I also wanted to bring in more realism than usual superhero stories, ie: the MC cannot just walk and have a meeting with Batman or Superman, he would have to “work his way up” in terms of credibility and whatnot. The Aliens that show up in Shift I tried to make different than the ones in Dial, just to share the love for lesser-known characters. And to make it fairer for the villains of the DCU, the main character will not wantonly use if gain at all an Alien X or a ben 10 form of Kryptonians, just so the characters have to work a little bit for victory. I urge anyone reading to consider checking out both APGTE and Dial as they are both amazing works, and I hope you enjoy them. The beginning of how the MC enters the DCU will not be as important as him actually existing in that universe, so that is why a ton of time is not spent on that part of the story. Chapters will be around 2.5 thousand words and come out around every weekday.

Saga of Fallen Kings, Book I: The Revenant Prince
The Philosopher King once conquered the known world, his power seemingly unlimited and his armies inexhaustible. Since that time his might has slowly unravelled, and his once steadfast empire has begun to crack, splinter and devour itself. In the isolated Southern Realms, where even magic has abandoned them, none of that matters. For years it has been filled with warring kingdoms, where as many kings die to the blade as to old age, and constant battles tear apart the land. When one such kingdom invades its old enemy, the King and his heir, Prince Caden, are killed. Unable to accept the loss of his family Prince Arian is broken, and when the Philosopher King stretches out his hand in aid, Arian takes it without a second thought. When Caden wakes from death, he's different. His eyes and soul have changed, and he finds a world filled with friends who no longer trust he's even human. Suddenly thrust onto the throne and indebted to the Philosopher King, Caden has no choice but to keep going - he must finish what his father started, and try to survive the machinations of the figure who now owns his fealty. Meanwhile something beyond death stirs for him, desiring nothing more than to drag him back into its embrace. Author's Note: This story used to be known as "A King of his Own", but after some consideration I have decided to rebrand it. The first reason is that I was growing increasingly dissatisfied with the title. The second is that I have come increasingly to view this story as a 'saga' containing multiple 'books' rather than one long, continuous publication, and as I did so I realized that as I was quickly getting to a point in the story where I wanted the first 'book' to end. This doesn't mean I'm going back on the things I said below - they're just going to continue in the next book of the Saga of Fallen Kings. :) Also, be aware that I do plan to edit this at some point. Though I take care to squash out any obvious errors when I proof-read, and do simple edits in that process, at some point I'm almost certainly going to do large edits that might significantly change parts of the story. Old author's notes: This started as a completely random writing session. There was no purpose or direction, but as I kept typing an entire world began to form in my mind that I knew I had to write about. My plan is to turn this story into a veritable medieval fantasy epic that spans an entire world, follows multiple character and storylines, and takes place over many years. The story has quite a grounded, almost 'realistic' start, but many more fantastical elements will be introduced, expanded upon and become central to the narrative. I have ideas for this story that make me genuinely excited and I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy writing it, and join me on what will hopefully become a truly massive fantasy epic. If you do enjoy this story please consider following, rating and leaving a review. I'm also happy to answer any questions or comments you have. Disclaimer / Author’s note: I’m writing this story purely as something to do. If you choose to read it, I’m glad, but it’s certainly more written for my own enjoyment than anyone else’s, so… sorry if it’s not for you. With that, do be gracious with me, as well as offer whatever helpful criticisms you might have. I’d be much obliged. Enjoy!
