The Numbers That Brought Our Fates Together Chapter 85: Abandoned Daughter.
The doors closed, and Melinda began to watch the elevator count the floors, going down smoothly. The girl sighed with relief and turned to walk toward the stairs.
"What are you doing here?" A stern male voice made her shudder in surprise. Melinda turned back and saw David.
The gaze of the man was like an icy wind, full of coldness and scorn.
"I… I… I just…," she began to stutter, and could not clearly answer anything.
The man went ahead and called the elevator.
"I wish I will never see you next to Elena. Get lost," David said, not even looking toward the girl.
The elevator pulled up, and he went inside. Melinda did not dare to move ahead and remained standing until the man's silhouette disappeared behind the closed doors.
Only then did she come to herself and walked away quickly.
The girl parked the car near the large apartment complex. The houses were old buildings and were on the very outskirts of the city. Nobody went here at night, as it was life-threatening. But even during the day, it wouldn't be safe to be around there.
Melinda went up to her apartment on shabby steps and opened the door. The girl's face immediately wrinkled from the familiar and unpleasant smell.
She took off her shoes, went into the living room and saw a man lying on a sofa surrounded by empty whiskey bottles.
The girl went to the kitchen to get a plastic bag and began to collect trash scattered on the floor.
The man opened his eyes lazily and said in a hoarse voice, "Melinda, is that you?"
"And who else could it be?! When will you stop drinking, eh?! Do you think it's only you who became bankrupt? Do you think it's only you who had hard times recently?" The girl loudly reprimanded her father.

Her home life before she grew up was not a fiesta either. Her father was rarely at home. And if he was, then in those rare moments he did not care about his daughter. Since her mother died when she was ten years old, Melinda lived on her own. She raised herself, cooked food for herself.
The only thing that was required of her was not to cause problems at home and to behave as an exemplary daughter in public. Because for any blunder she was severely punished.
Secretly from her father, she began to study dancing and even won a competition, the prize in which was training in one of the best dance schools in Europe. But her father did not let her go. So another girl took this opportunity.
Soon after, she met Elena at one of the social events. She knew that the girl was President Lee's adopted daughter, but when Melinda saw how warm and caring Chen was to that girl, her heart filled with resentment and envy.
She did not understand why her own father treated her worse than this man was treating a child who was not even his real daughter. It was then when Melinda began to feel irritated about everything Elena was doing. Although in reality, Elena had nothing to do with it.
And now, after so many years, when Melinda decided to return to her old childhood dream and started dancing again, that same Elena sincerely congratulated and encouraged her. And she did not hear a single good word from her father.
Melinda collected empty bottles and headed for the exit to take them outside. Suddenly, her attention was attracted by an unknown document lying on the dining table. She came closer and looked at the contents of the first page. The girl's hands fluttered, and the bag fell to the floor with a crash.

Melinda grabbed the paper and read them carefully. With every paragraph she read, her heart sank more and more.
She rushed to the man lying unconscious on the sofa and began to shake him desperately,
"What it is??? Now come to yourself and explain to me what is it all about??"
Her father opened his eyes reluctantly, looked at the document and pushed his daughter, "Leave me alone. I needed the money, and I decided to sell this useless apartment," Mr. Matthews replied and rolled over.
"Useless?! But how could you!" Tears came out in the eyes of the girl.
She began to beat the man on his back with the papers desperately, "It was my apartment!! Mom left it for me! How could you sell it??! This is the only thing left for me after mom died!!"
The apartment in Spain, which Melinda's mother inherited, was her last hope. She has already agreed with her friend that together they will open a dance school for children in Barcelona and that she will work as an English teacher as the school grows. She even bought tickets to Madrid and packed up to fly away tonight and forget about all this as a terrible nightmare.
With all her heart she wanted to start a new life, where no one knew her, and where she did not know anyone. Where she could be herself and not think about the "high class" social life.
But now she didn't even have that opportunity. Her own father robbed her of the last thing she had.

Leftover Apocalypse
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] This is a story about the newly-adult Calliope Smith having a terrible day that ends in her getting mysteriously teleported from Phoenix, Arizona to a fantasy world where her life is in constant danger. She considers this an upgrade. Someone evil is looking for her, and she doesn't know why. Someone who seems to know a lot about her has promised they'll help her, but she doesn't know who they are. All that matters to Callie is that magic is real and one way or another she's going to learn it. The end of the world is coming up, sure, but Callie won't need to worry about that. In fact, by the time she even finds out about it one of the doomsday devices will already be destroyed, and the authorities will be well on the way to dealing with the other one. It's fine. Everything will be smooth sailing. Almost certainly. Probably. Chapters are usually about 2500-3500 words, and the goal is to post 2-3 per week but I sometimes get busy or have some writers block. It's your standard portal fantasy / Isekai premise, but unlike some the main character's time on Earth and how she got pulled into another world will (eventually) be explored. Some slight GameLit-feeling stuff later, no menus or level-ups but there's something suspiciously like a skill tree when the magic system gets going. No number crunching, and while the main character will get to do some silly stuff she won't be a god like in some fics (and will in fact spend a lot of time being badly outclassed by her enemies). Some reader interaction, ranging from adding to the worldbuilding to occasionally making big important decisions about skill progression. Please note that the main character is flawed and impulsive, and will make some stupid decisions. That's part of the story, but I get that it's not for everyone. Trigger Warnings: Foster care system references, crappy parenting. Some mental health adjacent stuff, specifically the main character has some issues where she experiences varying levels of empathy and emotional vulnerability depending on the day (it's complicated and not meant to portray any real-world conditions). Occasional violence including mention of death and grievous bodily harm, but no detailed descriptions of gore.

The Ingress Estate
Jonathon Eucole. Soldier. Scholar. Now an Initiate, the dedication without dedication, he finds himself both prisoner and master of an arcane edifice, the Ingress Estate, which can neither be escaped, nor controlled; only diverted, maintained, and pacified. This is a gothic fantasy story, set in a world in which gods and the afterlife are not only real and known, but were both established in living memory of some of the inhabitants after millennia of arcane warfare with the being who constructed the mundane reality the humans occupy. But this isn't the story of those who colonized the afterlife at the cost of their own humanity, but a somewhat more ordinary man, in somewhat extraordinary circumstances. This is also a LitRPG-lite, which means there's a system of sorts, fragments of which can be observed through Jonathon's eyes. Don't expect level-up screens, or statistics, or indeed numbers much at all, beyond those the inhabitants of the world itself apply to understanding their own reality. It pretty much doesn't matter to the story, I mention it so those who don't want to read LitRPG at all can successfully avoid it here. I don't have any particular plan here, just some ideas inherent in the genre. This is a character concept I toyed with some years ago; an old man, bright of mind but weighed down into apathy, both by his past and his responsibilities for a terrible estate that cannot be left without stewardship. Don't expect any kind of overarching plot or story, because that's really not what this is about. Also don't expect much dialogue. Or character development. Or much of anything, really, because I've planned nothing in the way of an actual book, here. Other relevant information, if you've read this far for some reason: The MC isn't super-powerful to begin with, and probably never will be. He's a veteran with some useful skills, and the insight on how to use them, so can deal with the world's ordinary threats reasonably well, but not too much beyond that. --- Currently on hiatus, as currently the story has a rather poor ratio of effort-to-personal-payoff. I may return to this once I have a clear idea of how to get the stories where I want them. I've started a more standard LitRPG using the same system. But if you like intelligence characters who cleverly min-max their classes, it probably isn't the story for you; it's the story of a rather ordinary guy who winds up in a very similar universe.
