Avatar Online Chapter 18

[Ding! Your Elemental Mastery bar is full. You received one Elemental Point.]
Although Liu Ye didn't receive any experience or gold for killing a player, he was still training his Elemental Mastery. Flaming King and his buddies came in clutch with their arrival and helped him cover the last 8% left.
Liu Ye didn't busy himself with stats just yet though and instead got them moving. "Alright, I am ready. We can depart."
Vice-leader Marco brightened at his words and dropped everything he was doing. "Perfect! Follow me! I will lead us to the Waterfall Mountains. It will take us an hour to get there so we better hurry. The Bandit Leader will return back to the camp before sunset."
Liu Ye secretly hoped that Vice-leader Marco would whip out a Dungeon Key that would take them directly to the designated location but he was asking for too much. Thankfully, they immediately started running and they kept a good pace without stopping.
[Time Left: 13:57:26]
They would still have around 13 hours left after they reach the Dungeon so Liu Ye wasn't that worried. At the very least, he got some time to check his loot.
[Ding! You opened a Player Bag.]
[Ding! You opened a Player Bag.]
[Ding! You opened a Player Bag.]
Liu Ye opened all three bags he picked up from killing the players and almost tripped when he saw all the goods in his inventory.
[Medium Health Potion x21]
[Medium Mana Potion x21]
[Small Health Potion x60]
[Small Mana Potion x174]
[Waterskin]
[Fire Stone]
[Wolf King Necklace]
[Mazamut's Ring]
[Mazamut's Ring]
[Blessed Cookie x5]
He already expected to get a large amount of Mana Potions but that wasn't what shocked him. It was the three new items that he didn't expect to see.
[Wolf King Necklace] [Locked]
[Description: A single wolf fang on a string carved entirely out of a Fire Stone! Beautiful piece. The markings on its base signal it was made by Arron, one of the best sculptors in the Fire Land. It's strange a bandit possesses one of his creations when he never sold a single piece. Could it be stolen? Be careful while wearing the necklace. You might be accused of being a thief.]

[Effects: The wearer gains 50% more Elemental Mastery with each Fire Ability used.]
[Requirements: Lvl. 25, Firebending, 5 Wisdom, 10 Intelligence]
The first item Liu Ye saw looked strangely familiar to the one he found earlier, but that wasn't all. The second item was literally a replica of his Mazamut's Ring but instead of granting +50% damage from Earth Abilities, it was Fire Element instead.
Just this alone raised a red flag in his mind.
The third item was the most useful to him as it wasn't locked and could be used right away.
[Blessed Cookie x5]
[Description: A single-use cookie with unique properties.]
[Effects: Increases your Max Mana by 100 for the duration of 1 hour.]
"I think I get it…" Liu Ye muttered as he checked his inventory again. Each of these items came from a different player and he also found one item.
It could only mean the game buffed the chances of finding the first item, probably in hopes of enticing the player to play more. Who wouldn't play at least till Level 25 if they had an overpowered item at hand?
It also made the game interesting, giving players an opportunity to find unique quests.
"Young man, we don't have all day!" Vice-leader Marco called out in a hurry, forcing Liu Ye to increase his pace.
Although Liu Ye didn't mean to PK a lot, how could he resist such good items which he could use or sell for good money? Too bad, they only spotted players after they left the Red Zone.
"Someone is coming!"
Vice-leader Marco wasn't sneaky at all, running straight past the battlefield of three wolves and four players. One fireball even hit him but he took 0 damage and didn't even react to it.
[Alpha Wolf - Lvl. 7 ]
[HP: 50/250]
[MP: 25/70]
Seeing such a low HP monster while passing by, Liu Ye just couldn't resist himself and shot three Ice Projectiles to finish it.

[Ding! You killed the Alpha Wolf. You received 100 Experience and 1 silver.]
"Hey!" The four players called out angrily but Liu Ye was already gone, running away after Vice-leader Marco. They would receive the same amount of experience even if he didn't steal a kill, so it didn't matter.

"Isn't he the guy from before? The one that caused us to get killed?"
More and more players began to recognize him as Liu Ye ran through the newbie areas. Some even tried to talk to him by blocking his way only to be brushed away without sparing them a glance.
"Young man, we are entering a dangerous area," Vice-leader Marco warned after a long thirty minutes of running to reach the other side of the Waterfall Forest. "Watch out for spiders."
Liu Ye could tell the place wasn't friendly when spider webs were hanging everywhere. The number of players also lessened and seeing the crawling spiders from afar, Liu Ye wasn't surprised by their choice.
[Spider - Lvl. 3]
[HP: 30/30]
Five long-legged spiders ran up to block their way with their eyes staring intensely. They looked like they came out from a horror movie and any normal person would be too scared to face them.
Liu Ye wasn't a normal person though. He didn't even stop moving as ten Ice Projectiles shot out and pierced into the Spider's bodies.
[Ding! You killed the Spider. You received 10 Experience and 20 bronze.]
The experience he received was so minuscule that killing them wasn't even worth it anymore.
"There is no need to kill them. They are too slow to catch up to us so we can just avoid them," Vice-leader Marco suggested as he continued to sprint. "We don't want to attract the Spider Queen with the sounds of a battle. That would be a bad idea."
His words couldn't help but pique Liu Ye's interest. "Spider Queen?"
"Yeah, she is a monster dominating this part of the Waterfall Forest. Usually, she hides in her lair and only comes at night to hunt so we should still be relatively safe right now," Vice-leader Marco explained as he gazed to the right. "It's best if you don't ever go in this direction. That's where her lair is."
Ahhh!
Just as he spoke, they heard a female scream coming from that exact direction. Liu Ye's eyes immediately brightened as he just wondered what excuse he could use to check out that place.
"Oh no! A woman in distress needs help! Let's go!" Liu Ye called out as he changed his path but Vice-leader Marco didn't take the bait at all.
"Hell no! If that woman went there, she was asking to be eaten! I'm not fighting that." Vice-leader Marco shook his head firmly with fear in his eyes. "I once saw that Spider Queen and you can't even run away if you want to. She will catch you in no time."
"What if she lost her way? Aren't you responsible as a Guard for protecting the civilians of your land? The least we can do is check what is going on," Liu Ye convinced and began running towards the screams without waiting for an answer. "Follow me!"
Thankfully, the AI didn't fail him, sending Vice-leader Marco after him.
"Help!!!"
The female's screams grew louder as they got closer and they finally reached the scene, peeking from behind a small boulder. A gigantic Ice Spider was toying with a human body that hung upside-down on a thin line of a spider web.
To Liu Ye's surprise, it was another player that the spider spun around while wrapping her into a cocoon.
[Ice Queen (Boss) - Lvl. 10]
[HP: 1250/1250]
[MP: 450/500]
A real field boss!
"She is done for…" Vice-leader Marco whispered as he watched the Ice Queen in fear. "We should leave…"
"Don't you want to help her?" Liu Ye questioned as he quickly opened his profile to unlock a new ability.
[Ding! You unlocked the Small Ice Wall.]
[Small Ice Wall]
[Description: Creates a small ice wall to block enemy attacks. It is capable of absorbing 100 Damage.]
[Cost: 5 MP]
He needed one defensive ability so he chose it over Water Boxing which wouldn't come of use against such a monster.
"There is no way we can help her. We have to run before we get discovered," Vice-leader Marco argued.
"It won't be able to see us since we are outside of its rang—"
Liu Ye paused mid-sentence as he suddenly realized the Ice Queen disappeared. He turned to search for her only to freeze when he heard muffled screams coming right behind them.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

The Due
Every sailor knows the tale of Davy Jones' Locker. That place drowned sailors are sent to, ever resting on sea's bed. Some tales recount of a ghostly ship, the Flying Dutchman. Many a story has spawned from these two tales. Countless retellings mixing in their own fictions. But all stories spawn with a kernel of truth to them, and the story of Davy Jones is no exception. Those who've met the legendary seaman and his ghostly ship might call him a ferryman, escorting the drowned to their respective afterlives. Others might call him a devil, meting punishment on those deserving. The true story is always slightly different. Davy Jones is a ferryman, but not one for the afterlife, as Walter finds out. No, Davy Jones manages those who die at sea while in debt, and Walter died with a lot of debt. Unable to pay, Davy puts Walter to work. The specter has just the job for the dead college graduate. Another god, Sod, needs an afterlife for his new world. Davy tasks Walter with the job. Suddenly, Walter finds himself having to run a fledgling underworld with little instruction from Sod. To top it off, the denizens of Sod's world have their own ambitions to achieve godhood, and they won't take kindly to Sod's newest employee shaking up the status quo. [Traumatizing Content tag is up just to let everyone know this will be a story that deals with different themes of death. Some of them won't be nice and so better to be safe than sorry.]
