His heart fell as he saw the message. Closing the inbox interface, he thought to himself, “I guess what’s destined to happen will happen in the end.”
He immediately set off, with his team, for the canyon entrance. The mood was tense during the entire journey as they rushed to the canyon. Everyone kept silent and hung their heads low as they reflected on the upcoming battle.
Half an hour later, they finally arrived at the canyon entrance.
Lin Huang spotted a few giant boulders from a distance and knew they had successfully blocked the entrance and created a smaller choke point. However, that choke point was much larger than he had anticipated. He envisioned a choke point spanning a few hundred metres not the 2 km wide choke point they had now. This was the standard he set in order for the choke point to limit the monster horde’s numerical advantage to the absolute minimum.
However, time clearly did not allow them to do so. Before they could shrink the choke point, the horde invaded.
The 2 km wide choke point was soon flooded with monsters as they started their frenzied attacks.
The residents who helped move the boulders had long since been evacuated by the Hunters. With the horde’s invasion, them staying behind would only serve as food for the monsters.
All of the stronghold’s hunters had come out to aid in its defence but even so, they were vastly outnumbered by the horde. Counting the hunters brought by Yi Yeyu, they only had a measly 1,000 plus hunters. As such, spreading out to battle was not an option as they would get dogpiled to death. Yi Zheng naturally knew of this and organized the hunters into defensive layers.
Forming the spearhead of the defence were the 20 Gold Hunters.

The 20 hunters spread themselves out at the choke point, each standing no further than a few hundred metres away from each other as they began massacring the monsters.
While a large portion of the monsters had been bewitched, they still possessed some consciousness and could clearly sense the danger emanating from these hunters. They all rushed into the gaps between these hunters.
The hunters themselves didn’t try too hard to block them as they were too busy killing the monsters in front of them. They had to leave the remaining monsters to the Silver hunters behind them.
The silver hunters numbered at least 1,000 and were standing approximately one hundred metres away from the Gold hunters, forming a defensive arc with two to three metres of spacing between them.
They were also clad in battle armor but to a lesser extent, to aid them in killing the monsters who leaked out from the first defensive layer.
Next were the Copper hunters who formed a third defensive layer. They were similarly stationed 100 metres away from the preceding defensive layer. There were 100 Copper hunters stationed in this layer with a 30 metre gap between each. Thanks to the first and second layer, they faced the least pressure as only a small amount of monsters leaked through which they usually stepped forward to kill. However this was also in effect, the last defensive layer.
The fourth defensive layer behind them consisted of 20 old men who used to be veteran hunters till they had to retire due to their injuries, which caused their combat strength to fall. They usually spent their time in this stronghold relaxing but they were now defending the stronghold as well. They were all equipped with heavy firearms as while they were no longer able to use their Life Energy, but their skill with a gun hadn’t deteriorated
Yi Yeyu spotted Lin Huang’s team from her vantage on one of the giant boulders. She didn’t try to give them verbal commands but instead pointed at her Imperial Heart Ring. Lin Huang immediately knew what she meant. With the sounds of battle and monsters howling filling the area, messaging via the Imperial Heart Ring was the only way to communicate.

A short while later, his Imperial Heart Ring vibrated and he opened the message screen to see Yi Yeyu’s message. “The third layer is full. Head to the last layer with your team. Those seniors are equipped with guns but some of the monsters are impervious to guns so you guys have to take care of that.”
“Got it.” He replied simply and turned around to convey her message.
After hearing the message, some of them were dissatisfied.
“They are clearly looking down on our strength. They are afraid we would get in their way so they dumped us at the last layer.” Zhou Le huffed as he commented.
“That’s right. By the time we got here, everyone had already started fighting, this means everyone else got the message earlier than us. They definitely do not trust us. If that’s the case, what’s the point of me staying behind. I should have left with Bai Yan!” Yu Guang was incensed as well as he vented his frustration.
“Hey, now’s not the time for these complaints. You guys promised Yi Zheng that you will absolutely obey his orders.” Lin Huang said as his eyes swept over the teenagers present.
“The reasons why the head examiner made us stay at the last line are one, for our safety and two, we aren’t able to withstand the pressure in other lines. After all, we still aren’t official hunters and naturally can’t compare to the BlueCopper hunters.
“Besides, just think about it, if they really didn’t trust us, she wouldn’t have given us the last defensive layer. While we might seem to be most relaxed of the 4 layers, we are also the most important layer. If any monsters break through our layer, their next stop would be the 200,000 residents.”
“The first three layers all have a backup layer behind them so it is fine for them to let some monsters through. However, our layer does not have that luxury so our responsibility is the heaviest among the 4!”
Hearing this, the teenagers’ morale was boosted once more.
However, Lin Huang was chuckling in heart, “What a bunch of kids. It’s so easy to lie to them.”
He knew that Yi Yeyu didn’t factor the 4th layer into their plans. They intended to stop all the monsters at the third layer. Their team were essentially idlers.”
Against a vast enemy such as the monster horde, the human forces did not have the luxury of numbers so every part of the defence had to function properly. If one portion malfunctioned, the entire defence system could collapse.
Yi Yeyu wouldn’t take the risk of such a thing happening by making Lin Huang’s team of kids, a part of the defence plan. If anything happened to this piece, everyone would have to pay the price.
Furthermore, Lin Huang was deeply aware of the problems his team possessed. Their organization was poor and they weren’t able to perform consistently. Their teamwork was lacking compared to other professional hunters, not to mention their mental fortitude and attitude. If it was up to Lin Huang, he wouldn’t use such a team in his defensive plan either. As such, he was nonchalant about their treatment.
To him, the best outcome would be that the first three layers performed their job perfectly, blocking out all the monsters. He would then idle for the next two days and by then the human transcendent would arrive and kill the monster transcendent, ending this incident.
However, reality was a cruel mistress as after an hour of idling, they finally saw some action. A commotion occurred 100 metres north of them and within a few seconds, a stream of monsters broke through the third defensive layer and charged towards the stronghold…
