《The Trials of Bethany》37 - No Longer Pear-cival

Collapsing into a bed in the guard’s break room, Pearcival made some general sounds of exhaustion. Sounds that he didn’t particularly have to fake, given how focused he’d been so far. This groan drew the attention of the other guards for a small amount of time, enough for a knowing look of commiseration but nothing lingering.

He lay there for a while, long enough that he had become part of the furniture and the others in the room had finished their game and moved on. As such, nobody was in the room who had been there before he entered, in fact it had emptied out almost completely as others who had been on the shift prior had finished up their game and were heading home. Others came and went and Pearcival watched, from within the bed, face down but peering out. Occasionally people entered and pointed laughing slightly but through it all he stayed still watching, and hoping to gain a clue to where the keys were being kept, after all he hadn't noticed them on any person directly and the guard he had accosted certainly hadn't had keys on them. Eventually his waiting paid off but not in a way he had expected and certainly not in a way he had wanted.

An older guard had come in, one labeled as [Jared Bottler, 3], clearly in a fairly foul mood, he'd slammed the door on entry causing the rest of those in the break room to look up, their attention grabbed by the angry man, he had marched over to the new group sat at the table, and scraping a chair across the table had slammed himself down, hitting his fist against the table as he did so. The group paused their chatting and sat in uncertain silence for a while. Sensing something was happening Pearcival rearranged himself slightly so he could properly take in the full scene. The room was silent, almost deafeningly so in fact.

One of the other young men was clearly uncomfortable with the silence and was first to crack.

"tough day Jared?" he offered as a conversational olive branch.

"You don't know the half of it, mate. Went out last night and was made a laughing stock in the pub, was laughed out of the place. The today I went somewhere else and had just settled down when I heard somebody telling the story to somebody else. It was a whole different bloody pub, aren't these things supposed to be here today gone tomorrow. Plus when I left there I ripped my bloody shirt and the wife didn't half have a go, just had to take it too because the brother were in town. I was fuming, plus he kept going on about some promotion, his wife is pregnant which got my wife going on. I'm just really fucknig done."

The young man was struck silent at the outpouring, he probably hadn't really planned for how he would respond. Nor would he have expected such a detailed answer, or any answer at all beyond a huff or two. He'd clearly asked more to break the silence than anything else. But he was in for a penny now, so he went further.

"Why don't you check the chart, I'm pretty sure room two is empty for the rest of the day. I'm sure you could find somebody to take there to relieve some of that pressure one way or another. The old man perked up at that as Pearcival's head dropped, he knew what an offer like that meant, he'd seen it before after all.

"Where's the spare key then, anybody who particularly won't be missed?" Jared asked.

Somebody else chimed in "just check the fucking chart, nobody here keeps active track. Keys are under his bed." he pointed directly at Pearcival causing him to freeze at the attention.

Fortunately Jared didn't care at all about his presence and instead leaned down to grab the hidden key that was clearly an openly kept secret. Pearcival crossed his fingers, hoping his target wasn't on the list. He lay there waiting for Jared to return, knowing that this was unfortunately in his favour here, even if he disagreed with it on every personal level. Having waited once more for people to empty out, Pearcival attempted to nonchalantly check the list, and frantically looked for Susanna's name. He let out a sigh of relief and grabbed the keys before heading out. Some of the people gave him a knowing look which almost caused him to physically lash out at them, he headed towards Susanna's cell.

Reaching the door he pulled out the set of keys he'd picked up, wincing slightly at the attention grabbing sound they made as they clattered together. He looped his way through the options until he found the right one and with a little force he got the key to turn in the lock and to unlock the cell. Having gotten in he beckoned over the terrified woman who was inside. Susanna froze to begin with, terrified by the man before him and her assumptions of what was about to happen. Despite that she stepped forwards towards him, ready to follow him to whatever fate lay ahead of her. For his part Pearcival had to stick to his part and act like the monster she assumed he was. Feeling her flinch slightly under his touch, recoiling at the skin on skin contact was almost too much for Pearcival but he kept going and ushered the woman out of the room and towards the visitors rooms toward the entrance of the prison. As he walked he tried not to meet anybody's eyes. He'd almost reached his target, a room where they would have privacy when he heard somebody shouting to him from behind.

"Be careful there mate, she isn't on the list. She's got a daughter on the outside who visited a little while back. I wouldn't risk it until nobody has visited in a while. Give it a year or two and I’m sure she’ll be up for grabs."

Pearcival didn't know how to react to the comment so he stuck with the act that had got him so far, the generally silent type. He gestured vaguely over his shoulder but didn't break his pace. The guard shrugged but didn’t question it further. The two kept walking until they were alone in a meeting room. Pearcival let out a sigh of relief when the two were alone. Susanna misunderstood the sigh slightly and took a couple of steps back. Now the two were alone, her eyes had regained a little steel in them that he recognised from the eyes of her daughter, as she strode to create some distance between the pair.

"You don't need to worry love, your daughter Beth sent me." Pearcival said, slowly not wanting to further startle the woman.

"Bethan-" Susanna started before the word faded in her mouth. "Wait you know my daughter? Why are you here? Did you hurt her?" Susanna actually grabbed one of the chairs in the room at that and held it aloft. The slight tremble in her arms betrayed both her fear and her inability to hold the makeshift weapon for long.

"No it's not that at all. It's a little more complicated than I have time to explain, but the long and short of it is that she hired me to come help her. I'm not from around here." At this Pearcival willed his stealth to fade slightly and grinned as Susanna's eyes grew wide at his level. Among other things the stealth skill caused people to not particularly look for the level unless they were actively trying to find it. After all stealth was mostly about avoiding gaining attention rather than losing it once it had been gained. The life of the party can't stealthily leave but they can stealthily ensure they never become the focus of the party in the first place, allowing them to leave discretely later.

Hoping his level was enough to convince Susanna of his honesty he turned back to the door, locking the pair in. Despite the reassurance Susanna still backed herself up into the opposite corner of the room. After all even if he wasn't a real guard that didn't mean he wouldn't take advantage of the opportunities he had. PEarcival understood her apprehension and sat down, hands open palms upwards as a sign of how unarmed he was.

"We still need to get you out of this place, you might be temporarily safe at the moment but that isn't going to last, if we don't come up with the next step. There isn't much further to go but there are both innocents and trained guards between us and the exit. First and foremost we need to get you out of those clothes."

Sensing his poor choice of words he quickly pulled out the now very wrinkled dress he had borrowed from Bethany, it wasn't fashion form this planet and he hoped the striking outfit would draw attention to her outfit rather than her face and would distract from the fact she hadn't headed through the door. It was a gamble because people might question why they hadn't noticed her come in but they certainly wouldn't assume she had come from one of the cells if you were wearing something like that. He turned himself to the wall facing the door they had come in through. After all he didn't want to become unalert but also wanted to be very clear to Susanna she had her privacy and he wasn't going to peek. Eventually she let out a small cough and he felt safe turning around to see she had changed out of her now filthy outfit.

He got her to toss the outfit she had removed into the corner, after all they didn't need it anymore. Susanne rubbed her arms and shivered slightly. The dress wasn't designed with sleeves and she was feeling exposed in the light flowy fabric. After all it was a far cry from the materials of the time, even if it was much nicer to the touch. Pearcival needed a distraction, something to draw the attention of most of the guards, some kind of state of emergency. He had an idea in mind but that involved leaving Susanna temporarily. He took the meeting room key off the large collection and pressed it into his hand making her promise not to open the door unless he used a special knock.

Taking the rest of the keys he peered out the room before creeping back towards the basement dungeon. Though he had his disguise he focused entirely on being unseen. After all, he needed this bit to not be noticed for a little while. Having gotten halfway down the stairs he flung the keys into the most visible cell and fled back up the stairs, wincing at the clang as they hit the bars. He then snuck back into the room with Susanna and together they waited.

Before long an alarm bell was ringing and Pearcival could hear the war cries of those previously locked up, who were ready to fight back even with their bare hands. He quickly smuggled Susanna out and pointed her towards the inn he had left Beth and Pete behind in. Leaving her to make her own way was a risk but Pearcival didn't want to impose on their reunion. Further now that he had successfully helped Susanna to escape without killing anybody, much like Beth had asked, he wanted to send a message of his own. As he headed back into the prison he pulled out both his daggers, ready to get some justice.
