CHAPTER FIFTY SEVEN

Will there be a moment to recover and reflect?

~

Leaf couldn’t believe the speed with which his friend could run

Twig had always been slower than almost everyone

He’d be out of breath halfway through any game they played

The way he ran while carrying his friends left him dismayed

The pain in Leaf’s leg hurt like no pain he had ever known

The monster’s fangs had pierced his skin and broken through a bone

But as his head began to clear of panic, fear, and dread

He started to think there was a chance not to wind up dead

“Twig, there are some caves nearby where we could go and hide

Run in that direction til you reach the mountainside”

Twig didn’t reply but turned to where Leaf had pointed

He could help but feel Twig look slightly disappointed

Twig felt almost nothing as he ran, just cold and tired

His willingness to feel a thing had just about expired

With his left hand missing, holding sky was getting tough

He feared she might fall off his shoulder if he was too rough

Achievement: An Actual Quest

Of all the times to not be able to adjust your stats

You are just the worst of all the kingdom’s useless brats

Those you carry in your arms are worth more than you know

Find a place to let them heal, don’t waste your time now, go!

“Don’t you think I wish my friends were far away from here…”

He mumbled as his wretched god’s opinions became clear

Luckily for him, the blood of monsters hid their scent

So there were few that noticed the three children as they went

Those that happened to discover them as Twig ran by

Did manage to catch up unless the beast could fly

But even those soon gave up on chasing Twig through the trees

Twig had all the strength he needed to escape with ease

After what felt like forever, the three friends arrived

Leaf trying to not question the way they all survived

He stopped for just a moment at the rocky mountainside

Looking for a cave or somewhere they could rest and hide

But standing still for even one second was a mistake

His ears were deafened by the roar of a big Wingless Drake

It saw them come out of the trees and started galloping

Closing in before the boys knew what was happening

The size of a small elephant but dragon-like in form

This is the last thing you’d want to face in a great swarm

It’s dark scales and fiery breath are fearsome on their own

But its paralyzing cry carries a lethal tone

Indeed, the cry had stunned poor Twig who couldn’t move a foot

Watching as the drake’s mouth starting spewing smoke and soot

He thought he had been lucky after all to live so long

But accepted destiny would never make him strong

He managed to throw Leaf away to give him a fair chance

But wasn’t able to throw Sky before the Drake’s advance

As his knees gave out he simple fell and dropped his friend

Sorry that he couldn’t protect them both in the end

But as Sky hit the ground, she suddenly opened her eyes

And noticing the drake, she stood up to her friends’ surprise

With ever step it sounded like another bone would break

And drowsily she stumbled forward to the charging Drake

The creature didn’t change its course when it noticed the child

And it was only several paces from her when she smiled

With a laboured motion, hindered by her injuries

She fell toward the monster, putting strength into her knees

Her fist extended just in time to meet the monsters face

And the right side of the drake’s head was gone without a trace

Carried by momentum, the dead creature rolled on by

But Twig had trouble taking his eye off the bloodied Sky

The god of war is jealous not to have won this girl’s heart

This girl can make a battlefield into a work of art

Her talent to make use of every skill with which she’s blessed

Means that in war, she will always be a welcome guest

She turned around and hobbled over to him where he stood

“Hanging around staring won’t do you boys any good

Pick your lazy friend up and come follow me this way

Please don’t make me ask again it’s been a busy day”
