CHAPTER FORTY EIGHT

Your title makes more sense after seeing the way you fight...

~

The scene before the boy was wrong in every way he knew

She lay there sleeping as if it was just normal to do

He walked toward her, noticing that she was breathing still

But wonder how she slept despite the smell that made him ill

He knelt down just beside her, on the wet and dirty ground

As he reached out to touch her his heart began to pound

He touched her shoulder gently and attempted to wake her

Almost guilty for ending the girl’s peaceful slumber

But when he stirred nudged her shoulder, it was not as it should be

With a crunching sound her arm moved unnaturally

She groaned in pain and opened up her eyes with a small frown

“Mother, I’m still tired from yesterday, so quiet down…”

Leaf was so confused he almost laughed at what he’d heard

But then he saw something fly by and knew it was no bird

His sense of urgency returned and he leaned in to speak

Worried that even if she awoke she’d be too weak

“Sky, wake up, you’re injured and I found somewhere to hide

But there’s lots of caves, so I need your help to decide”

Hers eyes cleared up and found her friend, whose face was near her own

And this time she started to move with one long painful groan

Her face contorted as she sat up in the pool of blood

Pain she’d never known was possible came like a flood

“Sky, let’s get that monster blood washed off, and you’ll be fine”

“No, this time I’m pretty sure that most of it is mine”

Achievement: Nap Time

There could be no finer title to describe you now

Even there, you look like a little angel somehow

It’s like you were born to fight just for my enjoyment

Even other monsters have been avoiding that scent

She caught the smell of blood and other odors in the air

Wincing as she looked around and saw death everywhere

Leaf’s stomach had reached the limit of would it could take

But knew that stopping to recover would be a mistake

He did his best to only look into her glassy eyes

Ignoring all her injuries and cuts despite their size

“We need to go, if you can’t walk I’ll have to carry you

It’s not a great plan but it’s the best that I can do”

She slowly rose to her feet and quickly tried to walk

But Sky felt like her broken foot was tied to a big rock

She couldn’t move no matter how she struggled through the pain

Even hopping on one leg, her efforts were in vain

“Alright, just climb on then, before the next monsters attack”

Leaf knelt down so she could lean against his slender back

He tucked his arms under his legs and ran away from there

Nauseated to his core and trying not to care

Achievement: Burdened

You leave no question in my mind, your title suits you well

Yours will be a story gods will likely always tell

This will likely hurt, but you’ve already come so far

Bare a little more and be the hero that you are

You’ve never carried such a weight, and no boy your age should

But you’ve proven that if you could help someone, you would

There are monsters everywhere, so stay low to the ground

Focus less on speed than trying not to make a sound

Sky had fainted with her arms around Leaf's neck by then

Silently he thanked his guardian god once again

The level up and blessings came and though his body burned

He continued to concentrate his mana as he’d learned

His footsteps were much heavier now, hindering his stealth

But he spared no effort, thinking about Sky’s poor health

He grew light headed as he tried to breathe without a noise

But stealth was not a skill a speedster normally employs

One by one he felt the eyes of monsters on his back

Pushing him ahead as he struggled to stay on track

And before long, his best attempts and stealth was all for nought

Too many high level monsters’ attention was caught

He started running, disregarding every horrid beast

Looking on at him and Sky as a potential feast

He heard the sound of several monsters running from behind

And now surviving was the only thing on his young mind

He had no time to dodge trees branches as they met his face

He closed his eyes and barreled forward in his desperate race

He felt like he’d be running an eternity but still

He’d run another thousand years if all it took was will
