I Did Many Dangerous Things After Knowing When I Would Die Chapter 31

"It's John Jones! The captain of the expedition team! He came out from the tomb!"
From afar, a member of the Criminal Investigation Division could be heard shouting.
Soon, all eyes followed the direction of the person's finger and found the five people who climbed up from the tomb.
"It's really John Jones! They really escaped! Thank god!"
"Captain John seems to be injured. Someone is carrying him on his back..."
"My god! What went on under the tomb? Why are their clothes so tattered and their arms covered in so much blood?"
The members of the Criminal Investigation Division were concerned.
"Don't worry too much. Send someone to help them! The swarm of insects behind them is approaching soon!"
Seeing that John's group had escaped, the captain of the Criminal Investigation Division, who had been gloomy all this while, finally let out a long sigh of relief. However, he could not rest easy yet, as the mob of insects was still crawling over from all directions. He knew that the crisis was not over, so he quickly issued a new order.
Following that, a few men from the Criminal Investigation Division who were on the front lines sprang into action as they ran quickly and jumped into the collapsed pit on the ground.
Some of them were carrying stretchers while others held on to flamethrowers, intent on facing the army of pests head-on!
They reached John Jones and his group in a flash. They wasted no time by immediately placing the injured on stretchers, carrying them and retreating.
"No. Seven, no. Eight, cover the back! The rest of you, retreat! Quickly, retreat!"
The commander of the frontlines called out loudly and waved his hand as he led the Criminal Investigation Division members carrying the hurt explorers to safety.
Behind the escaping members, two other members, No. 7 and No. 8, backed them up with flamethrowers in their hands, directing the blazing fire towards the approaching insects.
...
A few minutes later, all the members of the Criminal Investigation Division had managed to reach safety. They put down the stretchers on the ground as they tried to catch their breath. When everyone saw that the five expedition members had safely escaped from the tomb, they were relieved and reassured. "Captain John, has everyone escaped from the tomb? Was anyone left behind or is this all of you?"

The captain came forward, asking nervously.
John Jones listened to the captain's question intently, panting from the exasperation of their escape. After a few seconds of silence, looking as if he had been deep in thought, he slowly raised his head and looked straight into the eyes of the captain of the Criminal Investigation Division.
"All the members have escaped. We left no man behind. Captain, thank you for your timely assistance!" John said as his eyes flashed with sincerity.
John's words lifted a huge burden off the captain of the Criminal Investigation Division's shoulders and there was a glint of joy in the captain's initially worried eyes.
'John Jones is the captain of the exploration team. His words should not be false.
'It seems that these five members were the only ones stuck in the tomb…
'They are safe now…
'We've finally rescued them!'
The anxiety that had been squeezing his heart ever since the mission started finally released its grip.
He stood up and looked at the collapsed burial area and the surging tide of insects. He felt a rush of confidence overtaking him once again.
"Captain! The members of the exploration team trapped under the tomb have been liberated. Can we now launch an all-out attack on this place?"
A member asked excitedly when he saw the fearless look in his captain's eyes.
The all-out attack would be a bloody onslaught for them, leading to the extermination of all living things in the cemetery.
Previously, they had needed to take the expedition members' lives into account, so the whole Criminal Investigation Division had to hold back and be extra cautious with their strategies.
This time, they could launch a full scale invasion on the whole place and deal with the problem once and for all!
The team members all glanced at the captain expectantly, awaiting his orders.
After a moment of silence, a smile slowly spread on the captain of the Criminal Investigation Division's face and he nodded his head firmly, showing his support.
His men were ecstatic as they received his permission. They moved right away, charging toward the weaponry.

This time, they were going to make these damn bugs taste their own medicine!
...
The captain crossed his hands behind his back and beamed; it was a rare sight for the members as the captain had always maintained a stoic face and rarely exposed his emotions.
The rescue operation was finally coming to an end. He could finally take it easy!
With this in mind, the captain turned his body to face the broadcast camera as he began to organize the words in his head, eager to share the good news with everyone in the livestream.
However, just as he laid his eyes on the screen, he was immediately taken aback.
This was because he realized that the comments popping up at this moment were neither praises nor words of thanks for the Criminal Investigation Division.
Instead, they were…
A large influx of questions?
The captain frowned again and leaned closer to the screen of the livestream to inspect the barrage of comments.
"Captain, there's still someone who hasn't come out from under the tomb!"
Most of the comments were directed at John Jones.
"Where did Blake go? He jumped down to save you, so why didn't you both come out together?"
"John Jones, what happened to you guys down there? Where is Blake? Did you leave him there alone?"
"My god! Blake is still a child! He sacrificed himself to save you, and yet you escaped alone? John Jones, are you even human?"
"John Jones! The bag on your waist seems to be bulging… What are you hiding in there? Are they the treasures that you stole while you were trapped? Hand them over! They are not yours! They are the country's!"
"John Jones, you're shameless! Return Blake back to us!"
"To the captain of the Criminal Investigation Division, we implore you to arrest this guy! He isn't a good person!"
"That's right! He even swindled the high school student's belongings! He's outrageously shameless!"
"Right! He even lied to us in an attempt to make more money for himself! You have to arrest him quickly!"
...
Questions and curses flocked the entire livestream screen!
The captain of the Criminal Investigation Division examined the hail of comments, and the smile on his face slowly diminished into a tight frown.
Through the explanations of the netizens, he roughly understood what had happened in the cemetery.
He concluded from their words that John had been dragged underground by the black mist, and a high school student named Blake had jumped into the tomb in an attempt to save him from being pulled further.
However, in this current situation, John was here with everyone else, except Blake!
Where had Blake gone?
There was only one answer – he was still stuck under the cemetery!
Someone was still in the tomb!
This was not the time to launch a full out attack!
Thinking of this, the captain's face suddenly changed. He quickly turned around and shouted at the members of the Criminal Investigation Division.
"Come back! Come back quickly! There are still people under the tomb!
"The whole offensive is canceled! Everything is canceled!"
The captain's words were desperate and rapid, but it was too late.
The soldiers had been picked on by these insects for too long, and had long held back their anger. Hearing their captain's order to launch the attack, they rushed to the front of the collapsed tomb with missiles that they had prepared beforehand, firing with all their might!
Just as their captain was exclaiming to call off the attack, their missiles landed squarely in the middle of the swarm of bugs!
Boom!
A ball of flames and smoke erupted above the entire tomb chamber as the captain looked on in horror, his eyes wide.

Wildling
Blurb: Silas--a scavenger living off the ruins of humanity--has spent his entire life fighting tooth and nail to provide for himself and his crew. But when a scavenging run goes awry and he's snatched up by an android patrol, he finds himself thrown into a cage and priced to sell as a pet. And when a suitor comes calling, he fears the worst: that he'll be turned into a Domestic, a human lapdog brainwashed into total obedience. Instead, he discovers an equally disturbing truth: that the creatures who stole his world have created a videogame the likes of which Earth has never seen; a sprawling, game-like theme park where humans are the Avatars and androids are the players who control them. And to make matters worse, his android guide is as hopeless as they come, having gotten all of her previous Avatars killed in record time. So if Silas wants to regain his freedom, he'll not only have to fight his way through a world that was specifically designed to murder him in brutal fashion--he'll also have to convince his android guide that he should be the one calling the shots. FAQS: Q: Who are you, handsome stranger? A: I'm Kyle Kirrin, the author of Shadeslinger, book 1 of The Ripple System, published by Portal Books, and I write crunchy LitRPG. Q: What is Wildling? And is it complete? A: Wildling is a crunchy LitRPG mash up of Fantasy and Science Fiction. And yup, Wildling is already complete at 64 chapters, or about 120,000 thousand words. You're looking at something like a third draft here--it's fairly polished, but it hasn't been picked over by a copy editor yet nor has my developmental editor seen it. Q: Upload schedule? A: 5 initial chapters today (2/15/2021) and one chapter a day for the next month. After that I'll probably slow down to 2 or 3 chapters a week until the story is complete. Q: How crunchy is it? A: It's pretty crunchy. I'd put it on the same tier as Ascend/The Land/RSSG, but it might be a bit crunchier than those three? Q: Is this the first book in a series or a web novel or what? And what are your plans for it? A: It's currently a standalone with series potential. Full disclosure: this story may head the way of my publisher eventually, but will be available on RR for quite a while no matter what. Likely several months after it's complete with plenty of warning before/if it's taken down. Q: What kind of build does the MC create? A: Sword and board! Q: Crafting? A: Plenty! Crafting isn't as center stage as it is in The Way of the Shaman, but it's close. Q: Base building? A: Two fully separate, distinct bases, both of which play a major role in the story. Q: VRMMO? Portal? Reincarnation or what? A: This one's a bit tricky. Basically an advanced race has created a game-like world that closely resembles a theme park. Think Westworld but with copious amounts of loot. And the MC has to fight his way through that to earn his freedom. Q: Permadeath? A: Nope! The MC gets 3 lives to play through the entirety of the game world, and death is extremely punishing, but not fatal. Q: Harem? Or romance? A: No and no. Q: Cursing? Blood? A: Quite a bit of cursing, yeah. There's blood, too, but it's not a gory book by any means. Q: How can I support? A: Instead of a Patreon/donations etc, I'd ask that you consider giving my debut LitRPG Shadeslinger a chance. It's free on Kindle Unlimited and the audio is already out narrated by Travis Baldree. It's an epic fantasy VRMMO where the main character gets 3 days of exclusive access to a new game plus a snarky, talking axe to guide him through it in exchange for agreeing to become the target of a serverwide manhunt once the Head Start period ends. Q: How's it similar to Wildling? And how's it different? A. The crunch level is very similar, but Shadeslinger is a much lighter, epic fantasy take on the genre. It's also VRMMO, but without any real world components aside from the first chapter. The MC is very different--he comes off as a bit of a jerk early on and can take a bit to warm up to, especially before his backstory is revealed--but he's also got a talking axe that constantly puts him in his place. Shadeslinger's a much more humorous story in general, and it's a great deal more polished as well. Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy Wildling!

She bled out on her front doorstep following a sudden three-day absence. Seven years have passed, with her little brother—Adam—now standing at eighteen years of age. Following his sister's death, he lived the life of a delinquent, wandering the grimy streets of the city of Steeldale. All it amounted to was years of street fighting experience, no proper home and an uncertain future at a second-rate university. Unbeknowst to him, the day before university, he will be thrust from Steeldale into a brand new world. It is a world where a cherry red sky gazes down upon a fragmented continent, on which civilisations from other worlds have been dumped like refuse. The souls of man leak from their fingertips, coalescencing into superhuman powers and horrible fleshy monstrosities. Tribes of refugees clash against each other, attempting to carve out a place in this unrefined space. With no choice, Adam must traverse this dangerous new world, with Mary's shadow following him every step of the way. This is my entry to the April 2021 Writathon. Chapters will be posted as I write them.
