I Did Many Dangerous Things After Knowing When I Would Die Chapter 10

The ball of green fire soared high up into the sky.
It was certainly bone-chilling as it incinerated everything in its path, leaving behind a trail of scorched land as it manoeuvred its way around.
When the expedition members saw this monstrosity, their faces were ashen, as if they were going against an enemy that they could never have imagined defeating.
They retreated in a group, back to back, towards an open space.
The green, ghostly flames reflected on half of their faces, casting a disproportionate shadow.
At this moment, the viewers in the livestream also sensed that something wasn't right.
After all, the expressions of the expedition team members could not fool anyone. They had pure terror painted all over their faces!
"What's going on? What happened? Captain John, did something happen at the cemetery?"
"I think I saw the crosses being split just now... am I seeing things?"
"Guys, doesn't the livestream seem to be shaking? Could it be that the cemetery is quaking?"
"Damn, the screen really seems to be shaking! Captain John, what's going on over there?"
The viewers in the livestream were in an uproar.
At this very instant, the audience finally recalled that this was an adventure livestream, similar to what Jack London had done on the night of his dreadful incident!
This was the same place he had been killed last night!
This... was a haunted cemetery!
...
Fear gripped their hearts once again as they heard a cold wind whistling through the cemetery.
As the wind swept up the clothes of the expedition members, the viewers were hit with a strong sense of immersion, as if they were in the shoes of the members at the cemetery!
"Everyone... don't be nervous!"
Just as everyone was trembling in fear, John spoke.
Of course, he had also noticed that there was something very amiss with this cemetery. However, he was sure that the cold wind was a natural coincidence. As for the green flames, he felt that it was probably someone playing pranks on them!
Someone must have used a special chemical to fabricate these flames, with the purpose of frightening them out of their wits!

With this in mind, John surmised that this trickster wasn't any ordinary amateur, and decided to play along!
'Aren't you tired of playing tricks?
'In time, you'll have a taste of your own medicine! I'll repay you for your deeds!'
John grinned and looked towards the lens of the video recorder.
"This isn't the work of any supernatural being. In fact, this is the power of the cross!
"It's the power of my twenty crosses. They have merged with the green flames and are driving away the spirits of the dead.
"Everyone, don't worry. After tonight, there won't be any more ghosts causing trouble around here."
John spoke in a relaxed tone.
Although the netizens in the livestream were puzzled, many of them immediately heaved a huge sigh of relief.
"I told you guys, what the hell? It's all the work of Captain John exorcising evil!"
"Isn't this cross a little too occult? Captain John, hurry up and put it up for sale. I'm already itching for it!"
They started to tease him again, jokingly.
The audience in the livestream gradually lightened up.
At the cemetery, however, the members of the expedition team could not afford to be laid-back! They were just inches away from the other-wordly flames.
Their skin was slowly turning raw near the cold flames...
Their instincts told them that there was definitely something abnormal about this!
"Captain, why don't we retreat first? I have a feeling that this place isn't just an ordinary cemetery…"
"That's right, there's no need for us to stay here. Look at that kid Blake, there's no sign of the ghostly fire near him at all..."
A few members of the expedition team whispered to John.
When John heard their words, his face darkened.
However, it was also during this moment that he could feel his facial features drooping, and his originally clear thoughts were starting to get sloppy.
In his field of vision, everything started becoming fuzzy and blurry...
He looked around at his teammates and realized that he was not the only one going through this unusual experience.
Everyone seemed drunk, their heads wobbling.
The world began to flip in their eyes and the colors stirred together.

'What was going on...?'
It took John all his strength to keep himself awake, but it was all in vain. He couldn't fight the strong urge to pass out.
He looked at Blake in the distance, finding that he seemed to be in a similar state.
However, Blake then fished out a pill from his pocket.
...
Blake had indeed been affected by the dense ghostly qi as well; even the cross had not served as a full protection against it.
Soon, he thought of the second item that had been given to him by the system.
The Spirit Awakening Pill!
Upon consumption, his spiritual power could surge up to 500%! Blake did not hesitate for a second before taking the pill out from his pocket and swallowing it.
In an instant, he felt his mind clear up, and round orbs of ghostly qi were forced out of his body.
The Yin-Yang Eye was open again!
He glanced over at the expedition team.
He could see that they were surrounded by spheres of dense smoke that shoved them toward the center.
A vast black fog streamed through everyone's orifices, from their ears to their nose, down to their throats as it entered their bodies.
The members felt as if they were deprived of oxygen, and their bodies slowly went limp as they fell to the ground.
John, who had the strongest body among them, held on to the livestream equipment to help him stay on his feet.
However, his legs were already numb, and he didn't think he would be able to hold on for much longer…
'The ominous atmosphere of this tomb is so strong… its owner must be an evil spirit that has lived for thousands of years.
'My Yin-Yang eyes didn't even manage to detect the ghost's aura...
'This should mean that the ghost is still residing beneath the tomb and hasn't shown itself at all.
'This is just the ghostly presence that is leaking out… and that alone is already so terrifying!
'If the ghost were to come out personally, how terrifying would that be?'
Blake frowned as he pondered.
Unknowingly, he took a few steps back. He was somewhat glad that he had decided not to approach the northern cemetery.
Otherwise, he would be like the members of the expedition team right now. He would have been disoriented and physically drained like the rest of them.
As Blake ran through his thoughts, he suddenly recalled that there was a tool in his Supernatural Treasure Guide called the Ghost-Seeking Compass.
According to the Treasure Guide's records, this compass could determine the location of ghosts, and it would release a scent that could suppress its presence.
'I wonder if it's that effective?'
He was extremely curious as he thought about this, and he retrieved the Ghost-Seeking Compass from the Treasure Guide.
Then, he began reciting the incantation in order to operate the compass.
Immediately, its needle flickered, finally pointing toward the direction below John's feet.
This meant that the ghost was currently a couple of meters directly below Blake!
At this moment, a ball of red light emerged from the compass.
Then, it floated directly toward the ghost's position.
Wherever the red light passed, it would extinguish the green flames in its way, and even the black ghostly qi that enveloped everyone disappeared.
Suddenly, everyone woke up!
John was the first to react.
He took a deep breath, examined his teammates who were staring at each other blankly, and attempted to take control of the situation.
"Is everyone too drowsy because they haven't been sleeping well recently? Drink Le Hu to refresh yourself!"
Despite John's forced confidence in saying this, he had already confirmed his suspicions about this cemetery.
However, he did not show it. He simply smiled, relating it to lack of sleep.
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Then, he took out a bottle of Le Hu from his backpack and chugged it down his throat.
However, as everyone finished their drinks and looked at each other, their faces turned as pale as a sheet, and terror was visibly clear in their eyes.
What they saw leaking from each other's mouths was not the sports drink, but instead… blood!
Their mouths were full of blood, oozing out and dripping from the corners.

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound.
