Chapter 1922: Blue Spiritual Root, Gu Long!
Translator: EndlessFantasy Translation Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation
“Duan Ling Tian’s right!”
“That’s right!”
“It doesn’t matter if it’s Duan Ling Tian or Gu Chun who swear on the lightning penalty oath. Both would yield the same result and prove if Duan Ling Tian destroyed Gu Chun’s Innate Spiritual Root or not!”
“Based on the situation, it seems like Gu Chun doesn’t dare to swear on the lightning penalty oath!”
“Exactly!”
As soon as Duan Ling Tian finished speaking, his words caused many people to doubt Gu Chun.
They saw Gu Chun hesitating when Duan Ling Tian asked him to swear on the lightning penalty oath. Not only did Gu Chun hesitate, but he even unreasonably insisted that Duan Ling Tian swear on the lightning penalty oath.
From the beginning until now, he was the one who had brought up swearing on the lightning penalty oath. To think he wanted to change his mind at the last moment? Did this not mean he was guilty?
In the thousands of Black Turtle Sanctum’s disciples’ opinion, it did not matter if Duan Ling Tian or Gu Chun swore on the lightning penalty oath since it would yield the same result. Since Gu Chun was the one who brought up the lightning penalty oath, they all felt that it was more appropriate for Gu Chun to swear on the lightning penalty oath like Duan Ling Tian had requested.
More and more people began to doubt Gu Chun. This was something he did not expect.
At this instant, he felt as though he was hoisted by his own petard!
“Gu Chun, do you hear them? All our fellow disciples feel that it’s more appropriate for you to swear on the lightning penalty oath…” Duan Ling Tian said mockingly as he looked at Gu Chun, “As long as you swear on the lightning penalty oath, everyone will know the truth! If you’re not killed by the lightning penalty, it would mean you’re lying, and I’m the one who destroyed your Innate Spiritual Root!”
Duan Ling Tian was delighted by his counter attack.
‘Didn’t you want to swear on the lightning penalty oath? Well, go ahead! Swear on your freaking oath!’
When Gu Chun heard the Black Turtle Sanctum’s disciples words, his face paled immediately. His heart was in turmoil.
He wanted his master, Li An, to kill Duan Ling Tian. He was not 100% certain Duan Ling Tian had destroyed his Innate Spiritual Root or not
This was a strange world after all. Unexplainable things happened all the time. It might be a coincidence that his Innate Spiritual Root disappeared, and it had nothing to do with Duan Ling Tian. If that was really the case, he would be committing suicide if he swore on the lightning penalty oath.

Although he no longer had his Innate Spiritual Root, and his cultivation base would stay the same, it did not mean he no longer valued his life. On the contrary, he valued his life even more than before. This was because now that his cultivation base could no longer be raised, his life span was fixed. He would not be able to extend his lifespan. In other words, a day gone by is a day less in his life!
Due to this reason, he did not dare to swear on the lightning penalty oath like Duan Ling Tian asked him to. He did not dare to gamble with his life.
What if the disappearance of his Innate Spiritual Root had nothing to do with Duan Ling Tian? Would he not die a wrongful death if he did that?
“Gu Chun’s feeling guilty now!”
“Tsk tsk… It seems like he was just baselessly accusing Duan Ling Tian. Duan Ling Tian probably didn’t destroy his Innate Spiritual Talent at all.”
“To think I almost believed him!”
The Black Turtle Sanctum’s disciples present on the scene began to whisper among themselves again. When Gu Chun heard their words, he turned pale, and he was rendered speechless.
“Didn’t you say you’re 90% certain Duan Ling Tian was the one who destroyed your Innate Spiritual Root? Why are you changing your mind at the critical moment?” When Li An saw Gu Chun making a mess out of the situation, his expression turned grave. He continued to transmit his voice to Gu Chun. “Don’t tell me 90% is not enough for you to take a leap of faith? Duan Ling Tian’s probably calling your bluff. He’s trying to scare you so you won’t swear on the lightning penalty oath. You have a 90% success rate! If you’re right, Duan Ling Tian will die!” Li An instigated the matter.
90% success rate!
A leap of faith!
If he won, he would live and Duan Ling Tian would die!
After listening to Li An, Gu Chun’s eyes brightened. He gritted his teeth and made up his mind.
However, as soon as Gu Chun made up his mind and looked a Duan Ling Tian determinedly, Duan Ling Tian said indifferently before Gu Chun could swear on the lightning penalty oath, “How boring! Gu Chun, if you think you’re at a disadvantage for being the only one to swear on the lightning penalty oath, I’ll swear on the lightning penalty oath at the same time with you. Are you satisfied with this?”
Boom!
Gu Chun who was about to swear on the lightning penalty oath after listening to Li An felt as though he had been struck by lightning when he heard Duan Ling Tian’s words. He quickly swallowed the words he was about to say.

Duan Ling Tian’s confidence and nonchalance had completely destroyed his hard-earned confidence.
In his opinion, if Duan Ling Tian really destroyed his Innate Spiritual Root, he would not agree to swear on the lightning penalty oath with Gu Chun! The fact that Duan Ling Tian was so bold to agree to swear on the lightning penalty oath meant that he was not afraid.
Gu Chun lost all his confidence at this moment.
“He must have known you’re going to swear on the lightning penalty oath, that’s why he struck first to make you doubt yourself. Don’t be afraid. Agree with him! Swear on the lightning penalty oath with him!” Li An saw through what Duan Ling Tian was planning and advised Gu Chun.
However, Gu Chun felt Li An was only using him. If he won, Duan Ling Tian would die. If he lost, he would die! He only felt that Li An was trying to use him to take this gamble. No matter what the outcome was, Li An would not be affected at all.
Now that he had thought of this, how could he possibly agree to Duan Ling Tian’s request?
“Fine! My Innate Spiritual Root is not destroyed by you. I’m the one who accidentally destroyed it when I was cultivating!” Gu Chun said as he looked at Duan Ling Tian.
Clamor!
His words caused an uproar among the people. Nobody expected he would just tell the truth.
“Ah, Gu Chun is the one who wants to frame Duan Ling Tian!”
“Hurmph! I knew it! Gu Chun is not a good person after all!”
“He really caused a lot of trouble for Elder Li An this time!”
The thousands of Black Turtle Sanctum’s disciples whispered among themselves, raising another commotion.
Some of them even felt Li An had ordered Gu Chun to frame Duan Ling Tian.
Naturally, they only thought about it. They did not dare to speak their minds.
Duan Ling Tian smiled. He knew he had successfully called Gu Chun’s bluff.
He had suddenly said he was going to swear on the lightning penalty oath with Gu Chun because he had been studying Gu Chun’s expression all this while.
When he saw the determined expression on Gu Chun’s face as though he was throwing caution to the wind, he knew Gu Chun was going to swear on the lightning penalty oath. For this reason, he decided to strike first to gain the upper hand and completely shatter Gu Chun’s determination!
Naturally, if it really came down to it, he did not dare to swear on the lightning penalty oath with Gu Chun since he really did destroy Gu Chun’s Innate Spiritual Root! To be more precise, he had devoured it.
When Duan Ling Tian heard Gu Chun’s words, he could not help but sigh in relief inwardly. His gamble had paid off, and he had won.
On the other hand, Li An’s expression turned grave when he heard Gu Chun’s words. He already knew the outcome of today’s incident. His plan of getting rid of Duan Ling Tian had failed because of his lousy teammate, Gu Chun
“Hurmph!” Li An snorted after he glanced at Gu Chun. He turned around and left. From the beginning until the end, he did not say anything to Gu Chun at all. It was apparent he was furious.
“Gu Chun, if you and your master want to frame me next time, make sure you come up with a better story. This story is full of flaws!” Duan Ling Tian who had won was in high spirits. After he had spoken to Gu Chun, he returned to his house.
As Gu Chun watched Duan Ling Tian’s silhouette disappearing before his eyes, his body began to tremble in anger as he clenched his teeth. His hands were so tightly fisted that his nails dug into his skin, causing blood to flow.
The thousands of eyes that were looking at him almost made him go insane!
“Duan Ling Tian… Duan Ling Tian! You’ll definitely die when my cousin comes! You’ll definitely die!” Gu Chun knew he was no longer a match for Duan Ling Tian now that his Innate Spiritual Root had been destroyed. He would no longer be able to seek revenge. He could only put his hopes on his cousin who would be coming soon. At this moment, his cousin was his life savior.
…
A month passed by peacefully before a guest appeared in the Black Turtle Sanctum of Fire Worship Sect.
It was a travel-weary middle-aged man. When he appeared, he was stopped by the patrolling team from the Black Turtle Sanctum that was led by a Bronze Flame Elder.
“Who are you to trespass into the Black Turtle Sanctum of the Fire Worship Sect?!” The Bronze Flame Elder asked in a low voice.
The middle-aged man had a huge-built and an ordinary appearance. He carried a sheathed long saber. He seemed like a tower, firm and awe-inspiring.
“I’m Gu Long. I came here to join the Fire Worship Sect!” He replied indifferently. His expression remained calm even when he was faced with the Bronze Flame Elder.
Then, the Bronze Flame Elder took out a Spiritual Pearl to assess his Innate Spiritual Root.
After the test, they discovered the middle-aged man possessed a blue Innate Spiritual Root!
The Bronze Flame Elder became much more polite when he discovered the middle-aged man possessed a blue Innate Spiritual Root!

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
