Chapter 942: Battle of Dao Hearts
Translator: Henyee Translations Editor: Henyee Translations
Hei Tengge and Bai Xingge were both quite surprised at An Lin’s sudden change in attitude.
However, Bai Xingge was ecstatic that An Lin had decided to accept its challenge, and it instantly sealed the deal.
“Great! I’ll lead the way to the Heart Examining Lake immediately, Lin An.”
Bai Xingge led the way with a hint of excitement in its heart.
It held mixed emotions toward An Lin. Its most beloved arena idol had perished by An Lin’s hands. Even though it was a fair and square battle, he was still not happy with the fact that An Lin had appeared here.
Bai Xingge wanted to initiate this dao heart contest in order to lay these unresolved emotions to rest and also to kick An Lin off from this Sun Tree.
An Lin followed Bai Xingge to the western edge of the seventh level, where an entrance cave had been set up using interwoven branches.
Just approaching the cave gave him a sense of coolness.
“This is… yin-type power?” An Lin exclaimed in amazement.
He was quite surprised to find a place with such rich yin-type energy in a place where yang energy was teeming.
“That’s right. This is the only place we’ve discovered on the Sun Tree that is imbued with a rich power of yin. Yin and yang give rise to one another, and it is because we have a place like this that the Sun Tree is so flawless and balanced,” Hei Tengge explained.
Bai Xingge didn’t speak, but a hint of reverence appeared in its eyes, and it had even completely retracted its feathers as if it had entered a sacred place.
It wasn’t large, but it was still about the size of thirty to forty An Lins.
This was considered to be quite small within the Vermilion Bird Tribe.
Even so, it still unleashed a shrinking spell technique to minimize itself to around An Lin’s size before stepping into the cave.

They didn’t have to walk far before an extremely clear lake appeared before them.
The lake was quite wide and rippled with yin-type energy, which was extremely abundant here.
It was covered with a faint, white fog, so no one could see what lay on the other end.
An Lin unleashed his divine sense to try and survey the lake, only to find that even his powerful divine sense couldn’t penetrate through the white fog.
“This is the Heart Examining Lake?” An Lin asked.
Bai Xingge nodded. “That’s right. One’s dao heart paves the way forward on this Heart Examining Lake. How far you go will depend on the firmness of your dao heart. Once your dao heart wavers, the lake water will no longer be able to support your body, and you will fall into the lake before being swept back to shore.”
An Lin recalled back to the Dao Exchange Conference of the Four Powers back in the day. There was a dao heart trial then as well, and he couldn’t even take a second step at the time to receive a score of 0.1 of a point.
With this in mind, he was a little scared.
Bai Xingge managed to catch a glimpse of An Lin’s fearful expression, and it was greatly elated upon seeing this. “Mr. Lin An, are you scared?”
“I am. I’m scared you’ll lose and try to attack me in a fit of rage,” An Lin retorted with a grin as he surveyed his surroundings.
“You…” Bai Xingge’s expression darkened with rage. “I hope you can still say the same thing after you fall into the water!”
After a war of words, the contest finally began.
An Lin surveyed his surroundings to find that yin-type energy was flowing from above as well as from below to converge here. Which meant that part of the yin-type energy here had flowed from the eighth and ninth levels.
Was this the connection with the entire Sun Tree that Hei Tengge had been referring to?

Then, could he trace the flow of yin-type energy and go in the reverse direction to reach the eighth level?
“Lin An, let’s begin our battle! I’ll make you realize just how pitiful your dao heart is to me!” Bai Xingge organized its feathers before turning to An Lin with a battle intent surging in its expression.
An Lin remained indifferent and couldn’t even be bothered replying. He stared out silently at the lake water with a profound expression, giving him the appearance of some supreme being.
It wasn’t that he was intentionally shunning Bai Xingge, it was just that… he didn’t even know what his dao heart was himself…
“Hmph! Flex all you want! I’ll see if you can still flex when you fall into the water!” Bai Xingge was quite enraged when An Lin ignored it.
An Lin didn’t say anything. Instead, he took the first step into the lake.
The lake water rippled, and his reflection appeared on the clear surface of the lake.
He didn’t fall in! An Lin was ecstatic!
He could do this!
He turned to Bai Xingge with a smile. “Shall we begin?”
Bai Xingge’s expression shifted slightly at the sight of An Lin’s confident gaze, and it too raised its proud head. “Come!”
It followed in An Lin’s example and stepped onto the surface of the lake. The lake water rippled, but it supported its body as well.
An Lin slowly walked forward. He did not dare to go too fast because he was worried that he might fall into the water.
Bai Xingge also continued forward and insisted on leading from the front like a sulky child.
An Lin rolled his eyes exasperatedly.
This Heart Examining Lake wasn’t as difficult as what he had expected. It was basically exactly the same as walking on flat ground.
Furthermore, there weren’t any illusions or anything to impede him. It really was just like walking on flat ground.
Thus, the two of them walked for several hundred meters.
Hei Tengge stood by the shore, and he had already lost sight of their figures in the white fog.
An Lin furrowed his brows slightly. There was something wrong here.
They had walked for so long, but there was no impediment or difficulty of any kind. How could a trial of dao hearts be so simple?!
He turned involuntarily to look at Bai Xingge.
He was given a huge fright by what he saw.
“Holy f*ck! Brother Bai, what are you doing?” An Lin let loose a cry of surprise.
Bai Xingge was still making its way forward, but its whole body was spasming, as if each and every step it took was extremely taxing. However, it still insisted on walking in front of An Lin with all its might.
“Who’s your brother?! I have never lost to anyone in my life, and I won’t lose to you!” Bai Xingge glowered at An Lin.
An Lin: “…”
Bai Xingge was immediately astonished upon seeing An Lin’s expression.
“You, why do you not look like you’re in pain at all?”
“You want a painful expression?” An Lin blinked before sticking his tongue out and rolling his eyes over into the back of his head. “You mean like this?”
“Pfff…” Bai Xingge threw up a mouthful of blood.
What the f*ck! It was having the battle of its life walking in front of An Lin, but the man behind it didn’t look to be suffering at all! He still had the spare time to pull faces?!
It had to be said that he had completely thrown it off its game.
“No! You must be feigning all this to create psychological pressure on me!”
Bai Xingge suddenly came to a realization as a cold sneer appeared on its face. “Hehe, what a sneaky man! I bet your dao heart is trembling with pain and about to give out, right? I have seen through your sinister plot, and I will be the final victor!”
An Lin: “…”
Was this bird f*cking retarded?

I wrote this when I was 16/17 (which was many years ago now!) on a really old PC I called Phylis. I remember having to print it out on an old ribbon printer to submit it to publishers - this was back before esubs were the norm! It never got picked up and I ended up self publishing it. I hope you enjoy.
