Chapter 554: The Mighty Ancient Dragon Projection
Translator: Henyee Translations Editor: Henyee Translations
The white light flashed again, and An Lin disappeared before reappearing over a kilometer away.
Tina’s spatial flicker was quite useful, and it was this ability used in conjunction with An Lin’s Vermilion Bird Mirror and Divine Plunder Technique that caught the black dragon completely off guard.
He immediately yelled to Cassidy and the others, “Attack the black dragon now! I’ve already taken away his defensive ability!”
Cassidy and Merlin’s expressions shifted upon hearing this. He could even snatch away the defensive ability of the black dragon? As expected of the Holy Leader!
Mi Ya felt like An Lin was spouting nonsense, but upon seeing the black dragon’s scales losing all their luster, she had no choice but to believe that the black dragon had indeed somehow been weakened.
A massive black fist projection tore through the clouds as it descended from the sky.
Tobias had finally returned, and he immediately threw a devastating fist at the black dragon’s head.
The fist collided with the black dragon’s head, and it was once again bashed into the ground. However, what was different this time was the fountain of blood gushing from its mouth upon being struck by the devastating fist.
Mi Ya and the others were all shocked upon seeing this.
An Lin actually stripped away the black dragon’s defensive abilities!
Everyone immediately took advantage of this opportunity to unleash their full power. Blue pillars of water soared into the air, the blood demon projection was conjured up again, and a series of monstrous crimson sword projections rained down as the tables were instantly turned!
Once again, An Lin went to stand atop his black brick while spectating the battle with a calm expression.
Dao Ye was in a state of shock upon seeing all this.
This was the real An Lin! He only participated in the battle for a few seconds, but he was instantly able to flip the entire battle on its head! Was this really something a Soul Formation Stage cultivator was capable of doing? The average Soul Formation Stage cultivators would’ve probably sh*t themselves in the face of such a mighty dragon, but what about An Lin? He was completely calm and collected with not even the slightest hint of fear on his face!
An unshakeable heart combined with unfathomable power…
No wonder the Dark Night Monarch fell at his hands. Dao Ye was starting to feel quite concerned for even the Moonlit Night Monarch!

Dao Ye was completely unable to muster up even a hint of courage in the face of An Lin’s overwhelming strength. He felt like his top priority should be to get out of here alive so that he could deliver news of what he had witnessed here to the Moonlit Night Monarch!
He had to warn her of how terrifyingly dangerous it was to oppose such a monstrous being!
The black dragon was getting the living crap beaten out of it, and its body was riddled with wounds.
Just as everyone was thinking whether they should beat this dragon to death, all the scales on its body suddenly opened up while a brilliant crimson light burst forth from its body. Immediately after, its aura began to climb explosively.
“Roar!”
Its body spun on the spot as the fearsome power emanating from its body twisted the space around it into a corkscrew shape. Everyone around the dragon sustained internal injuries from its desperate counterattack, and they all stumbled back in retreat.
It was also right at this moment that the black dragon flew toward An Lin!
That’s right, its target was An Lin! It was reduced to this pitiful state because An Lin stole its defensive ability. Hence, the only way to turn the battle around was to kill An Lin!
Tina immediately tried to unleash a defensive spell formation.
To her surprise, An Lin prevented her from doing so. “Get out of here; I’m invincible during this period of time!”
Tina instinctively heeded An Lin’s instructions, and she flew back in retreat.
Meanwhile, An Lin turned to face the furious black dragon. His body was so insignificantly tiny compared to the gargantuan dragon, but it was exactly this tiny, yet fearless figure that appeared especially scintillating in everyone’s eyes.
“Mountain Quaking Lightning…”
Boom!
An Lin didn’t even have a chance to unleash his Mountain Quaking Lightning Fist before he was slapped into the ground by a gargantuan dragon claw.
The black dragon didn’t hold his strength back at all. Its claw struck An Lin with a mountainous force, leaving a series of spatial cracks in its wake while the residual power tore a massive abyssal fissure into the ground.
However, An Lin flew back into the air in the blink of an eye before chortling at the black dragon. “That was piss weak, little black dragon, could you try a little harder?”
Cassidy and the others were in the process of rushing to An Lin’s aid, but all of them faltered in their footsteps upon seeing this. Meanwhile, the black dragon’s face was filled with shock and incredulity. “How could this be…”

“Roar!”
It unleashed a blast of scorching black flames toward An Lin, leaving a trail of black flames in its wake with no end in sight.
An Lin placed his hands on his hips as he stood on his black brick without even attempting to dodge.
The monstrous black flames knocked him back by over a kilometer, but he remained completely unscathed.
“Ptui! Did you spit out saliva at me or was that fire? There was no temperature to it at all!” An Lin looked at the dragon with a scornful expression.
Black Dragon: “…”
Xiao Ze was completely dumbstruck. How was it possible that this human’s defenses were even more powerful than its own…
“What are you all standing there for? Kill it!”
An Lin yelled at Cassidy and the others, who were still in the process of recovering from their incredulity.
He could only steal the black dragon’s defensive ability for ten minutes, so he could only pray that his personal army would be able to take care of this black dragon within the ten-minute time limit.
Cassidy and the others finally came to their senses as they pounced toward the black dragon again.
The black dragon finally lost all battle intent at the sight of the Return to Void Stage mighty figures charging toward it. It was unable to kill their leader, and its defensive ability had been stolen. If this battle continued any longer, it would fall to an inevitable defeat…
This was simply far too bizarre…
How could a Soul Formation Stage human cultivator be so powerful…
Xiao Ze looked deeply at An Lin, as if it was trying to commit An Lin’s face to its memory.
“I’ll make you pay for this another time!”
The black dragon let loose an enraged roar toward An Lin. Its voice was imbued with the boundless dragon might within its bloodline as a black sound wave swept toward An Lin with overwhelming force.
It wasn’t expecting to hurt An Lin with its roar, but it had to at least gain a moral victory over An Lin before it fled the battle!
An Lin wasn’t planning on taking any evasive measures either. He had the dragon’s ability of absolute defense, so he didn’t need to fear any attacks.
However, it was at this moment that an unexpected change struck. The ring on his finger, which was glowing with a faint golden light, suddenly began to tremble violently, as if it had been greatly enraged by something.
Immediately afterward, An Lin’s consciousness stirred, and the projection of a mighty black dragon appeared under the starry sky. The projection of the dragon was indescribably vast, and all the stars in the sky seemed to lose all their luster upon its emergence, and the golden light emanating from its eyes became the only color in this world.
Boundless ferocious might engulfed the entire island, as if the island would be reduced to nothingness with just a flick of its finger.
“So it is you that is trying to provoke me?”
The projection of the black dragon spoke, and each and every syllable it uttered resonated with the dao of heaven and earth, making everyone shudder in awe.
Xiao Ze was scared sh*tless by the projection of the black dragon as it knelt down onto the ground before kowtowing 1 over and over again. “Senior, it is my fault for not recognizing you. I didn’t mean to offend you; please spare me!”
The projection was a black dragon just like Xiao Ze, but the disparity in their dragon mights was like a gigantic dragon towering over a worm; they were simply on completely different levels. Xiao Ze had been paralyzed by fear, and he could only kowtow incessantly while begging the dragon projection to spare its life.
The projection of the black dragon remained silent for a moment before slowly vanishing.
An Lin experienced a sharp pain in his consciousness, which appeared to be the after-effect of summoning the projection of the black dragon.
The stars in the sky regained their luster, but everyone was still frozen in place as they struggled to come to terms with what they had just witnessed.
An Lin was also not expecting the ring Yang Yuan had once given him to unleash its power at a time like this. Not only was Xiao Ze scared sh*tless, but everyone else was also paralyzed with fear. None of them dared to say anything in fear of the black dragon projection killing them with a swipe of its palm.
Xiao Ze wiped the cold sweat from its forehead with fear lingering in its heart as the black dragon projection disappeared. It then turned a pair of grateful eyes on An Lin as it kowtowed again. “Thank you for sparing my life, Senior!”
An Lin: “…”

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
