Chapter 150: A Traitor Amongst The Sinister Devils
Translator: Henyee Translations Editor: Henyee Translations
An Lin only wanted to encounter one sinister devil, but now he encountered a bunch of them…
This type of sinister devil value package was a gift they did not want.
An Lin had already gripped the Soul Formation attack talismans in his left hand. If their enemy was too strong, then he could only use this trump card. He looked around to find that they had been surrounded by twelve sinister devils.
Sinister devils did not have cultivation bases so he could not detect how powerful they were. However, a powerful sense of peril constantly enveloped his body.
Whoosh!
Four of the sinister devils set into motion and charged toward An Lin and the others.
“Fire Spirit!”
Flames enveloped Xu Xiaolan’s body, making her appear as if she was a blazing phoenix. She slashed her longsword through the air, creating slash after slash of flaming sword projections.
As the sinister devils twisted in the face of the slashes, black claws formed on their bodies, grabbing toward the flaming sword slashes.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The flames exploded, charring the surrounding area black.
A black figure shot out of the flames, charging toward Xu Xiaolan at speeds even higher than before whilst exuding a dark, violent aura!
At the same time, the other three sinister devils had also begun to engage in battle.
Ji Yanling materialized white bolts of lightning with her swords as she fought one sinister devil.
Xiao Chou wielded his silver staff as he battled another sinister devil.
They were both Spirit Nurturing Final Stage cultivators and An Lin was the most powerful in the group in terms of overall combat strength, but it was still a difficult battle for them.
The attacks of the sinister devils were not only extremely ruthless, but also followed no patterns for them to take advantage of. On top of that, they could also mess with their opponent’s emotions.
Another sinister devil charged toward An Lin whilst An Lin shouted out to Da Bai. “Quickly, go help Xu Xiaolan!”
The sinister devil engaged in battle with Xu Xiaolan suddenly materialized countless sharp spikes on its body like a porcupine before the spikes began to elongate, stabbing toward Xu Xiaolan with terrifying penetrative power.
Xu Xiaolan’s expression shifted as she flung waves of flames forwards, whilst she retreated at high speed.
But the spikes were like countless flying swords, their speed even greater than the speed of her retreat.

At this moment of peril, a powerful blast of air suddenly flashed past, sending the sinister devil into retreat.
“Da Bai! What are you doing here, go help An Lin!” Xu Xiaolan yelled in surprise.
“Big Brother An just told me to come to help you, woof!” Da Bai replied honestly.
Xu Xiaolan: “…”
At this moment, An Lin, who was now alone, was only beginning to realize just how terrifying a sinister devil was.
Their constant shape-shifting, bizarre movement techniques and powerful mental attacks combined in a lethal package, just a split second of distraction could spell death.
Just as everyone fell into a desperate situation, another four sinister devils suddenly charged toward them!
If those four sinister devils joined in on the fight, they would definitely be overwhelmed.
“Unyielding Frost Sword!”
An Lin had no choice but to activate a Soul Formation talisman.
A blue sword slash immediately appeared in the air, slicing through the air with frightening power.
The sinister devil in battle with An Lin was immediately sliced in half and let out a yell of anguish before dissipating in the air.
Success!
But there was no notification from the system informing him of the fact that he had defeated a sinister devil. Could it be that it didn’t count unless he defeated a sinister devil with his own strength?
He had no time to think and immediately brought out another talisman.
“Unyielding Frost Sword!”
This time, he targeted two of the sinister devils that were close to him, that way, he could kill two of them with one talisman.
Yet another sword slash imbued with a powerful frosty aura was released from the talisman, freezing the sinister devils in place as it slashed toward them.
The two sinister devils were sliced in half once again, both of them receiving fatal blows before disappearing like the first one had.
These talismans were very useful, but An Lin was extremely distressed.
The talismans gifted to him by the leader of the Kunlun Mountain Immortal Sect, Spirit Child Shi, had all been used up. He reluctantly brought out the warding seals gifted to him by Heavenly Teacher Zhang of the Longhu Immortal Sect.
“You trashy sinister devils, taste the power of soul-vanquishing lightning!”
An Lin knew that he had no choice but to use these trump cards. Hence, he began to flex with zero hesitation.
A warding seal was activated and blue lightning spat forth.

The bolt of lightning was imbued with the terrifying power of pure Yang, striking a sinister devil like a flash of light tearing through the darkness.
A huge boom erupted as the sinister devil disappeared in a wisp of smoke before it could even let out a cry.
So powerful… these warding seals seemed to be a lot more powerful than the sword talismans he previously used!
An Lin’s mind spun quickly as he brought out another warding seal, vanquishing the last sinister devil that was still in the battle.
Now, there were only three sinister devils left. An Lin held a warding seal in his hand before re-entering the battle while wielding the Evil-Slaying Sword.
Boom!
A pillar of flames rose up into the sky, encasing the sinister devil in scorching flames.
The sinister devil charged out of the flames at Xu Xiaolan, even as thick smoke rose from its body.
At this moment, a huge burst of wind pressure descended from the sky, taking direct effect on the sinister devil, creating a crater in the ground in a thirty feet radius.
The sinister devil’s movements were immediately restricted.
Rings of wind appeared underfoot as An Lin charged toward the sinister devil, with streaks of white wind swirling around his sword, completely unaffected by the wind pressure.
The sword flashed through the air at the speed of light, slashing toward the sinister devil.
Slash!
The sinister devil’s body was slashed in half and it fell to the ground. It quickly shrunk and disappeared.
“Ding Dong!”
System notification: “Successfully defeated a sinister devil!”
Delight appeared on An Lin’s face, all that was left now was to absorb the aura of the sinister devil.
He looked toward the spot where the sinister devil disappeared, but there was nothing there. Forget the aura of the sinister devil, there was nothing there aside from empty air!
He then realized a very serious problem. What even was the aura of the sinister devil? How could he absorb it?
With that question in mind, he and the others slew another sinister devil with assistance from Ji Yanling. An Lin gripped the sinister devil’s body just before it dissipated.
The body had a jelly-like consistency.
At the same time, a huge amount of negative emotions, despair, hatred, depravity, violence… all of them streamed without reservation into his head, causing him to retreat quickly, his face ashen with fear.
There seemed to be no absorption of aura taking place upon physical contact… Instead, all he received was a powerful mental blow.
If physical contact wasn’t the answer, just how should he absorb its aura?
An Lin cast his gaze on the last sinister devil, could it be…
He had to eat one?
From the sinister devil’s quivering body and the frightening aura it exuded, it most probably wasn’t good to eat…
It was like asking you to eat half a kilogram of sh*t in exchange for a hundred million dollars, would you do it?
You’d refuse, of course!
Thus, An Lin and the others mercilessly beat the last sinister devil on the battlefield to death.
An Lin’s last warding seal was yet to be used. He had specially reserved it for the last few sinister devils that hadn’t yet entered the battle but to his surprise, he had not had a chance to use it.
The others also all cast their gazes on the last sinister devils, confusion written on all their faces.
Four sinister devils stood there quietly.
There were a total of twelve sinister devils that had surrounded them, but only eight of them actually attacked.
The remaining four sinister devils did not attack, nor did they retreat. They were like devilish sleeping beauties, creating a bizarre spectacle.
At this moment, a shadowy figure began to move slowly.
It was a humanoid sinister devil with a single dark red eye on its head. A twisted, violent energy flowed around it and its aura was as vast and boundless as the sea, exerting extremely strong pressure on everyone with its very presence alone.
There was another humanoid sinister devil gripped in its hand, but that sinister devil’s aura was extremely feeble and its energy was rippling inconsistently.
The sinister devil threw the sinister devil in its hand onto the ground, its single red eye filled with ridicule.
An Lin was extremely shocked upon seeing this.
This sinister devil was clearly different from the other sinister devils, it already had a set body that was not chaotic and twisted.
An Lin had seen some relevant information on this… this type of sinister devil was at least of the Soul Formation Stage cultivation base!
The sinister devil on the ground was clearly about to die at the hands of the other sinister devil, could it be that a traitor had appeared amongst them?

Cinder Roots (Undergoing a Rewrite)
This novel is currently undergoing a major rewrite, as I noticed several plot points that needed to be revamped. I'll leave the chapters I've posted here to anyone curious to see how everything started, but I'll be posting the rewritten story as a new novel in the future. The characters will be the same, but the journey will be more understandable and hopefully, a lot more fun to read. -------- First, everything was fire, it killed, it consumed, and it gave him life. He was just a tree, born in the biggest forest that remained in the world, full of dryads, naiads, elves and treants, but he was alone. He couldn’t see. He couldn’t talk. Curiosity plagued him. He dreamed of wandering the land, but could only wonder what stood outside the reach of his roots. The tree was tired of waiting. He decided to not just dream, but to act. How could he survive against a invading empire, a grand conspiracy that threatened to shake the foundations of the world, and the raw danger that lies within these woods? With pure determination. Warning - There are quite a few POV changes in the first chapters, but that'll change after the introduction is done, as I'll be focusing on the MC perspective only.
