Starting With Contract Pets Chapter 69

The second day at school.
At 10 a.m., two phalanxes of students stood in the field. One row was Class 2.3, the top liberal arts students, and the other was Class 2.4, the top science students with Su Bai among them.
It was now their turn for the test.
This year, the number of people who had chosen the pet department was around three hundred. There were more than four hundred people in the whole grade, and nearly three-quarters of them had chosen the pet department.
Classes 2.1 and 2.2 had already finished their test, so it was now the other classes' turn.
"It's so difficult this year. Rookies like us actually have to compete with the Pet Tamers who have elite commanders? Are they trying to kill us?
"Although they said that we can go with two or three people, I still don't feel that it makes any difference."
Someone whispered in the team.
"Don't be afraid. The battle still mainly depends on the level of our pet training and our ability to command our pets. It's not a must to beat the instructor."
Guo Dong shrugged. Beside him stood a half-meter-tall, red-haired Lava Dog; it held its head high, clearly full of confidence.
The assessment of pets was mainly about potential, training level, and actual combat ability.
The school could directly obtain information about a pet's potential from the Spirit Alliance's system, since everyone's first pet was recorded down.
As for the training level and the actual combat ability, a special instructor would judge it based on actual combat and give them fair scores.
"I'm afraid that my White-tailed Cat will be intimidated by those commander pets. Plus, our instructor is too strong; he's even bigger than Yang Zhou. What a super-size muscles tyrant."
"How is it? How many moves do you think you can resist?" Chen Rouxue blinked at Su Bai.

He glanced at the pet instructor who was onstage. The man with tan skin was nearly 1.9 meters tall and wore a brown short sleeve. His incredible muscles looked frightening, and he looked like a humanoid tyrannosaurus.
The pet standing next to him was even more terrifying. It was a Stone-ice Blizzard Furbolg, which was more than two meters tall; its frightening aura was enough to make people tremble.
"I'm not sure about myself, but with you and Chen Tingting, I think we can resist a few moves."
Su Bai slowly shook his head upon seeing the terrifying information. The current Purple Jade could not hold out on the opponent at all, and its skill power was not even qualified to break the opponent's defense.
"Okay, quiet! I hereby announce that your scoring test begins now. This test is to classify students of different abilities for our unified teaching, and it doesn't mean that you should give up if you don't enter the top class. As long as you make good progress fast enough, you can apply to the top class at any time to learn more advanced content," shouted the big-muscled instructor onstage.
When everyone quieted, he smiled slightly. "Speaking of which, this year's batch seems pretty good. Any volunteers to come onstage to fight? It'll add bonus points!"
Everyone exchanged glances, but nobody dared to speak out.
"Cowards!" The instructor's smile instantly disappeared. "Since no one is taking the initiative, I'll call in order of the list. Once you're onstage, don't hold back and don't be afraid of hurting my Stone-ice Blizzard Furbolg. Just do your best and use your full force.
"The first group is Yan Yongchao, Li Shitao, and Hao Hongmei; come on up."
Class 2.3 was called before Class 2.4. The team, comprising two boys and a girl, that just got called walked forward. Their pets were a Wind Spirit Bird, a Little Rock monster, and a Water Ripples. Among them, only the Little Rock monster was a mid-level servant, while the others were low-level slaves.

"Let's begin!"
The big-muscled instructor announced.
"Little Rock monster, use Ground Split!"
Li Shitao took the lead and commanded the Little Rock monster to launch an attack. Looking at the Stone-ice Blizzard Furbolg, the pet hesitated for a moment, looked back nervously at its Pet Tamer, and then launched the attack.
Bang, bang! Earth element spiritual power exploded and formed a crack on the ground which rushed toward the Stone-ice Blizzard Furbolg. However, when it was about to hit the target, the Little Rock monster suddenly turned a corner.
Li Shitao: "…"
Everyone: "…"
The opponent was a commander pet, after all, and it was terrifying, so it was normal to fear it.
However, this also showed that the Pet Tamer had not trained the pet enough.
"Little Rock monster, use Flying Stones!" shouted the boy angrily.
His pet was even more frightened this time and ran over to hug his trousers.
"Wind Spirit Bird, use Wind Knife!"
"Water Ripples, use Water Gun!"
At this moment, the other two also commanded their pets to launch their attacks. The Wind Knife and Water Gun's skills fell on the Stone-ice Blizzard Furbolg like tickles, cutting off only a few of its icy-blue fur.
"Do you have anything else to show?" The instructor raised his head.
"No." The three shook their heads. They were all rookies and did not have many skills.
"Okay, next group…"
Five or six groups came up consecutively. Out of the dozen or so people, some performed well while others performed poorly. There were also high-level servants, but none of them was able to pierce through the defense of the Stone-ice Blizzard Furbolg enough to wound it.
At first, the furbolg just stood still, but gradually, it yawned and fell asleep.
"The next group…" The big-muscled instructor also yawned, feeling bored.
"Wait a minute, instructor. The three of us want to challenge you!"
Suddenly, three people came out. One was Guo Dong, the other was class 2.3's class monitor, and the last member was the sports committee member, Liu Rui.
"We want to challenge you!"
Their pets were a fire-earth dual element Lava Dog, an earth element Little Rock monster, a lightning element Lightning Kitten Monster, but one of them were high-ranking pets.
"We finally have a show to watch."
The people in the audience discussed among themselves, feeling that the three pets were giving off a strong aura.
"Hey, when did Guo Dong have such a good relationship with Shi Lei and Liu Rui?" asked Yang Zhou in surprise.
"What's weird about that? They already knew each other. Although Guo Dong's studies aren't good, it's obvious how dedicated to pet training he is. I'm guessing that his strength was recognized by Shi Lei and Liu Rui." Jiang Yang analyzed.
Most of those in the higher sections were top students. Before they split into liberal arts and sciences, they were from the same class.
"Do you think they can win?" asked Chen Rouxue.
"Of course not, but they have a chance of breaking through the furbolg's defenses, provided that it doesn't fight back," replied Su Bai.
"The lightning, fire, and earth elements are pretty good against the stone-ice element. I hope that they can cause more damage, then we can go onstage and take advantage of it," Chen Tingting said.
"Very good. Your team is very courageous. All three pets seem well-trained. Start your attack and let me see how strong your pets are."
The three of them stepped forward and surrounded the furbolg. They exchanged glances and launched their attacks.

An Unwavering Craftsman
Given the hereditary nature of classes, everyone expects Damien—the child of two high-tiered adventurers—to be granted a high-tier combat class of his own. Expectations are betrayed, however, when Damien finds himself instead saddled with a crafting class of the lowest possible tier: [Neophyte Tailor]. Left practically crippled compared to those with better classes, Damien wants to avoid becoming a pawn in the machinations of the nobility, desiring only to grind his level in peace while wondering why the usual rules of inheritance were broken. Was it his desire to excel by his own effort, rather than an unearned blessing from a god? Did the Five take offence at his opinions on the unfairness of hereditary classes? Or maybe it was something to do with the alien voice that intruded on his ceremony? A voice that offers great power, and freedom from the tyranny of the Five, but that never names its price. This story is litRPG-lite. While the class someone possesses controls most of their lives, people don't get dinged at for every level they gain, nor can they see their status without undergoing a special ritual. The MC has no romantic interest. Crafting is merely a way to game the system, and doesn't feature heavily in the story, aside from a few descriptions on how they're carrying out the system abuse. There is, on one unfortunate occasion, maths. The pace is quick. This was a participant in the Spring 2022 writathon. (i.e. it was posted as-written at high speed. I may give it another editing pass in the future.)
