Chapter 44
The inner sect examination was divided into four stages: cultivation base, comprehension, immortal arts, and resilience .
Fei Kui’s 1 . 5 meters height and his round body made him look like a pig and he had a very comical appearance . Moreover, his smiling face gave him a wretched vibe as he explained the examination .
“The disciples that had achieved the fifth level of the Connate Realm are eligible to participate in the inner sect examination . Although you have failed your Foundation Establishment, the sect does not have a rule that says that you can’t participate . ”
“Moreover, Elder Rende is the main examiner and he is a very righteous senior . I am confident that I can persuade him . ”
“I remember that Elder Mude was the main examiner in the past . When did they change it to Elder Rende?” Gu Qingfeng did not have any impression regarding this name and he just thought that Rende was someone from the same generation as Hude and Jinde .
“Haha, that’s a matter of the past, and quite a funny one . ” Fei Kui seemed to think of something funny, and burst out laughing .
”I think you’ve heard that Sovereign Bloodheaven was a janitor in our sect right? Back then, he passed the examination but was rejected by Elder Mude due to his mediocre spiritual root . Later, the Sovereign became famous and shocked the world, turning Elder Mude into a laughingstock, and also giving him the nickname ‘blind man’ . Because of this he was too ashamed to be an examiner anymore and gave up on this job . ”
“Oh, I didn’t expect this to happen . ” Gu Qingfeng shook his head and smiled, rather amused .
However, he still couldn’t think of anything about this Rende, so he asked, “What about Elder Rende?”
“Elder Rende is Master Huode’s senior brother and an official elder of the Redcloud Sect, he is also a respected senior in the Bluesun Domain . He is a man of integrity, fair and impartial, and he is very influential in the Redcloud Sect . He is supported and respected by a lot of people and he is the reason why Jinde and Shuide did not dare to be too rampant during these years . ”
Gu Qingfeng had heard from Huode that the current Redcloud Sect was almost divided into three factions: Jinde’s faction, Shuide’s faction, and the neutral faction . It could be assumed that Rende was in charge of the neutral faction .
“In the past, people chosen by Jinde or Shuide could enter into the inner sect very easily, but ever since Rende took over as the main examiner, this has never happened again . ”
“He is wholeheartedly working for the well-being of the sect and is very strict about many things, especially the inner sect disciples . Even if they are recommended by an official elder, as long as they don’t obtain Elder Rende’s approval, they won’t be able to enter the inner sect . ”
Hearing this, Gu Qingfeng almost understood the situation and he was clear why Huode wanted him to follow the rules of the sect .
“Your immortal arts will be tested in the examination . I know that your musical attainments are very good, but this branch is too esoteric . Just to be safe, master told me to give you a few cultivation techniques . ”
Fei Kui took out a few books from his storage bag and handed them over, “One book is for martial skills, one is for magic arts and one is for formation . These are all cultivation techniques from our sect and they are mandatory for the examination . Master said to cultivate them when you are free . ”

As Huode’s confidant, Fei Kui naturally knew about Huode’s plan and the main reason why he wanted Gu Qingfeng to take the examination .
He knew everything, apart from Gu Qingfeng’s identity, and he just couldn’t figure out why did Huode pick someone who had failed the Foundation Establishment to compete for the successor position .
What was even more puzzling to him was that these cultivation techniques are mandatory for the inner sect examination and Huode had asked him to give them to Gu Qingfeng . This clearly meant that the young man before him had not practiced them at all .
But it was already too late to practice them now since the examination was going to start in a few days . Was Huode thinking that Gu Qingfeng was capable of practicing them in just a few days?
Even in the odd chance that he was capable of doing it, it still did not matter because the bare minimum for the examination was practicing these cultivation techniques to the minor accomplishment level .
That was something that required several years, and even the people with a high level of comprehension still took months to reach that level . In the entire history of the Redcloud Sect, the fastest disciple took six months to master these cultivation techniques to the minor accomplishment level .
But the examination was just a few days away…
Fei Kui did not know why Huode told him to give these cultivation techniques to Gu Qingfeng, but after thinking for a good amount of time, there had to be a reason for this .
He had tried to ask about Gu Qingfeng’s identity many times, but Huode only said one word: Ancestor .
As for what did Huode meant by the word ‘ancestor’, Fei Kui had no idea .
Gu Qingfeng took the cultivation techniques and casually glanced at them then threw them into his storage bag, “When is the examination?”
“There’s an examination every month, and we are five days away from the next one . ”
“I see, then go back, I’ll be there in five days . ” Since he had decided to help Huode, Gu Qingfeng would naturally give his best and would carefully cultivate for these five days .
—
Cultivation knew no years, and five days had passed in a flash .
It was time for the examination of the inner sect .
This was the most bustling day in the entire month and many people wanted to take part in this examination .
If they passed the examination, they would instantly gain success and would become inner sect disciples of the Redcloud Sect, which was a type of honor .
Although many outer sect disciples did not want to admit it, only those of the inner sect were considered official disciples of the Redcloud Sect . As for the people from the outer sect, they were at best honorary disciples .
By becoming an inner sect disciple, you be exempted from the tuition fees, and the sect also gave you cultivation resources, pills, and spiritual stones . Most importantly, as an inner sect disciple, you had the right to chose a master, which was extremely important for one’s cultivation road . Everyone wanted to have a master that could guide them .
Although the outer sect also had people that offered guidance to the disciples, they were more like public masters that taught tens of thousands of disciples . If you had a problem regarding your cultivation, not only did you have to wait in line for an answer, but you also had to pay the answer . And even after all of this, everything still depended on the mood of the master .

The outer sect disciples were extremely miserable and all of them wanted to become inner sect disciples, but unfortunately, the requirements for doing so were too high .
There were a lot of disciples that applied for the examination every month, but only a few of them were able to pass . Sometimes, from a hundred disciples, not even one was capable to enter the inner sect .
At the end of the year, it would be considered great if ten people were able to ascend to the inner sect .

A Will Eternal
A Will Eternal is the fourth major xianxia novel by the renowned Er Gen. It tells the tale of Bai Xiaochun, an endearing but exasperating young man who is driven primarily by his fear of death and desire to live forever, but who deeply values friendship and family. The story takes place in the same Universe as Er Gen's other novels, but is a separate story and can be read alone. That said, it does have connections to the other novels, especially I Shall Seal the Heavens. Those connections only pertain to a handful of chapters, so you can read the novel as a whole and enjoy it without first reading ISSTH. However, the best reading experience would begin with the later portions of ISSTH. This novel is much more comedic and light-hearted than Er Gen's previous works, although it has its fair share of action and drama.
