It’s one of those chapters...
The kind where a brand-new point-of-view shows up out of nowhere, grinding the pace of the story to a halt as this mysterious new person is given space to introduce themself in some new subplot that is seemingly irrelevant to the preceding events up to this point.
Market research shows that web fiction readers absolutely love this kind of stuff and never, ever complain about it in the comments section, so we are going to follow through by introducing this new cast member through their own eyes.
...
It was a dark and stormy night in the Kingdom of Al’Shazan. Wind swept over the lands and through the dark expanses of the Balthus Valley.
Not a creature stirred, not even a mouse.
The trees were silent despite the wind. The great slumber of night had taken even them.
Only one being was awake.
In the city of Gareth, there was one mysterious cloaked individual who was not only mysterious and cloaked, but also clearly the person who our narrator would follow but not quite get into the head of until the climactic reveal. They were covered in such darkness that it was impossible to tell who it was, even for omniscient beings.
This being stepped through the sleepy streets of Gareth and found their way to the only building with any light—the tavern.
Of course it was the tavern. Nobody writing fantasy stories could be creative enough to think up locations that weren’t readily shown in Lord of the Rings, because breaking any new molds would just be stupid and risky. We can’t have this mysterious individual going to the train station, now can we? Because while magical systems involving soul palaces and crystals are all fine and dandy, but it just gets unrealistic when you introduce—gasp—industrial technology.

The individual entered the tavern, and immediately they were confronted by a large bald man with a disgusting face.
Matthias. Their target.
“What ya doin’ here, fine one?” Matthias bellowed out in a drunken mumble
“Assassinating you,” said the figure.
Still cloaked in darkness, even when inside this well-lit building, the figure unleashed two dark whips—
No—
Two shadowy vines.
The vines wrapped around Matthias’s arms—
And pulled them off!
Oh no!
Dark vine magic!
The now-armless Matthias stumbled around with blood pouring out, but not depicted in enough detail to bother adding a violence content warning tag, especially since the vines also cauterized the wound a second later and stopped any bleeding—now they were basically green lightsabers.
“Why would you do such a thing?” Matthias cried out.
“Because I’m a mysterious POV,” said the figure. “And that’s what mysterious POVs do.”
They left the tavern and carried on with their night, off in dreamland.

Feel free to give suggestions and constructive criticism is appreciated.Another Important Note: Don't judge this book by the reviews that are given by reading only early chapters. Most of those reviews came after my novel went on trending and some wannabe critics who have never written anything in their lives decided it's not trending worthy. If you want to judge then read reviews given at later chapters or better read 15 to 20 chapters yourself. Thanks! :)

Neophyte: Common Route
A story about self-discovery, interpersonal relationships, magic and magical creatures-- and a silent war. Marsha is about seven years past adulthood and still feels like a scared child in her parents' home. This is exacerbated when she discovers her father has apparently keyed up his destructive, sadistic habits-- leading to a mad dash out of the house with precious cargo in tow and only one idea where to go. This begins her journey, leading to a discovery that will change her life forever. And she never wants to go back. (Warnings: Lots of descriptions of abusive, sadistic and otherwise traumatizing and triggering behavior that a parent perpetuated toward a child or multiple children. Descriptions of violence, a main character with emotional issues that will be dealt with, and a whole lot of the 'aftermath' of battles in a war. Even a few descriptions of some of those battles. Things of that nature. If you can't handle one of those, please do not read.) {I had this idea to write a 'common route' and then 'romance routes' like they do in otomes? Book 1 is the common route, and then at book 2, you choose your love interest. Each of which is encased in their own book.}

At The Lions Gate
In the 20th century America reinvented itself. Devastated by depression, scarred by war, rocked by a revolution, Americans banded together to preserve their country and their freedom. They had faith in themselves, faith in one another, and for those who believed…faith in God. This novel tells the story of one American who lived through those turbulent years….years that would test his character and the character of a nation. For Josh Sanders it begins in 1935. A star athlete in school, pro football is a ticket out of poverty during the Great Depression; but when his father, a WWI veteran, is killed during a robbery, Josh’s spirit is broken, and with it his boyhood dream. To honor his father Josh joins the war effort in 1942, distinguishing himself as a fighter pilot, until a fateful decision near the end of the war changes the course of his life once again. But many years later, after a stint as a boxer and a failed marriage, Josh finds his calling…at a time when the country is at war with itself. The year is 1968. King and Kennedy have been killed, race riots are breaking out, and Vietnam has become an albatross, causing massive protests across the country. In the streets of San Francisco Josh watches a crowd of students march for peace. As a veteran he’s conflicted, toward the war and those who oppose it. But when he encounters Rosy Goldin, a spirited young protester in need of help, a voice from the past calls him to action. His good intentions are soon tested when Rosy falls in love with the fugitive anti-war activist Erick White, a young man determined to oppose the war at all costs, against the wishes of his own father. Fearful of what happens to Rosy, Josh confronts Erick, unwilling to be part of his plan to escape…until he meets the boy’s father. A high-powered criminal attorney, Karl White is also a flag-waving patriot demanding that his son follow the law. But as White makes his case Josh is jolted by a painful war-time memory, a crisis of conscience that will soon determine the fate of Rosy Goldin and Erick White.
