《Isekai Winner: Super Sweepstakes!》Chapter 25: Contract

Tchadd crossed his eyes, one pupil following each of us. “If you want to get this W, you’ll need to get lucky.”
“Well, no shit.” I’m pretty sure that was, like, the entire point of the conversation.
“You misunderstand, Emma. You’ll need to get lucky.”
Olivia adjusted her top hat. “Stop wasting our time. How exactly are we supposed to ‘get’ lucky?”
“Under normal circumstances, the optimal training regimen would involve betting entire multiverses on casino games at an infinite rate through supertasking, but it’d take more resources than this company has available if you wanted to accomplish something like that. However, there’s a bit of an alternate route to success - if you’re generous in your interpretation of ‘success’ - in the form of borrowing luck from a higher being.”
“‘Borrowing luck’?” I didn’t understand what he meant.
“There’s a luck bank that you can take a loan from. I’d offer my own stash, but with the situation the company’s found itself in lately, I’ve been running this show on a shoestring as it is. I couldn’t afford the expense out of pocket, but I’m sure that at least you, Emma, have good enough credit for the job.”
I snapped. “And what if I can’t pay the interest? How does the foreclosure work? If you can’t afford to pay, there’s no way that I’d somehow be capable.”
“Don’t worry about paying it back, I’ll be able to handle it after the work’s done. If I somehow still didn’t have the funding, then the worst that could happen would be the foreclosure of your past lucky actions, maybe some from your time in the target’s world, and we’d be back where we started. I’m sure I could figure out another approach if it really came down to a situation like that.”

“Just get on with it. Where’s the bank, and how do we take out a loan?” Olivia rose from her seat and started walking backwards toward the exit, still maintaining full eye contact.
“Just go to the interdimensional highway, you’ll be able to figure the rest out on your own. But we still need to discuss the terms of the contract, or you’re working for free.”
“There won’t be any contract, Tchadd. You’ll pay me right now, and I’ll do as you say to maintain my reputation. Otherwise, the deal is off. There’s no way I’d sign a contract with someone who routinely uses them to enslave people for eternity.”
“Then you can see what happens when the bank denies your loan after what happened with your college fund when you come without any contract or affiliation.”
“Then there’s no deal to be had. Emma, I hope you can escape this freak’s ‘business’ sometime soon. Thanks for the beef wellington, bitch.” Olivia reached to open the gift shop’s door, though her arm was frozen in place before she could twist the handle.
“You won’t be leaving my domain until you agree to a contract, bitch.”

All the while, he can’t help but envy the the students who are living the life he had so eagerly awaited. But when an object of great and malevolent power promises to make good on all the promises the mages broke to him Mar is thrust into the world of magic. Mar will find that fate had something more than a life confined to the library planned for him after all. Authors Notes: I consider this to be a comming-of-age Sword and Sorcery story based mostly on the style of classic western fantasies. So if that's your thing then I encourage you to take a peek. Something I want to mention though is that the main character starts of pretty wimpy, and that might not be your thing. That being said, if you stick with him he's got a long way to grow. Also, while this version of the story is meant to be fully readable, more dicerning readers may want to wait until I move out of rough draft phase. There may be some inconsistancies with character and plot while I am still in the rough draft phase. I'm sorry for this, but this is my first web novel and from what I've read the best way to get a good novel out is to write write write, and then edit ruthlessly after you're finished with the book, so that's the plan I'm going to follow. Again, this is a rough draft. Everything you are reading is subject to change, including the name, title, and cover photo. This may no longer be the case once I've decided I know where this fiction is going and I have a reasonable understanding of the characters and their behavior. You're reading what comes off my keyboard as it's made, with very limited editing. There will be mistakes in the text. I do a quick spell check to take out the worst of the errors, but there will be some I miss. You can point them out in the comments if they are particularly confusing or glaring and I will try to fix them, however I am not overly concerned about minor errors as this is not the final draft by any means.

The Good Crash: An Oral History of the Post-Scarcity Collapse
"Don't we all feel, deep down, that we deserve the apocalypse?" APRIL, 2028—Global capitalism has collapsed. America has sealed itself off from the outside world, and inside its borders, a revolution rages. All it took was one incredible little machine. That machine turned into two, then four, then eight... like a virus, the replicators spread. As a work of oral history, The Good Crash features over 50 interviews with key witnesses to the events of 2027. The text is rendered in the words used by the interviewees themselves, with light editing for clarity and concision. As such, the book contains language and themes that are not appropriate for children.By capturing the voices to the people at the very root of the revolution, journalist and historian R. Vondersnitch has traced the origins and aftermath of the replicators' rapid spread. Crucially, the book also includes perspectives and testimony from those who attempted to stop the spread of the reps. "Some of these are heroes, too, in their own ways," the author writes in the book's introductory note.
