《End's End》Chapter 2: The Artificial

Unity gazed upon the massive glass wall to the side of his room. He could see the crowds filing out through the streets a hundred feet below, a sea of different colours signifying naive allegiance to meaningless ideals. Just looking at them pissed him off, it was why he’d specifically requested he be situated on a higher floor. Authentics were so strange, didn’t they know they could walk off the chess board whenever they wanted? Well, Unity could at least- he supposed it was probably just another item on the long list of things he was better than everybody at. The glass presented a partial reflection of his own face, black hair with a red streak and brown eyes. Both unusual for Unix, where blue-eyed blondes were more common. Of course Unity’s appearance was among the least notable things that made him different.
"Are you even listening to me, you prick?!" Unison spat from behind, his voice was like- no it wasn't like anything, it was annoying, it was petulant and most importantly it was interrupting Unity's meditation. "I swear to God. Answer m-"
"I was!" Unity rolled his eyes before turning to face his handler. Unison and Unity shared little in common past the slight similarity in their names. Unity was young and smart and funny and handsome. Unision was stupid, he had short orange hair that fell down to his ears and a face that looked like it had been flattened by a shovel, but his most notable feature was the stupidity.
Unison’s dark eyes narrowed and his lips thinned.
"Ah I see, what did I just say then?"
Unity waved a hand before replying.
"I don't remember."
"You said you were listening."
"You weren't very audible."
"I'm two feet away from you."
"Well I couldn't hear you over the sound of my thoughts!" He groaned, was it really Unity’s fault he thought so much and so loudly?
"Now who's fault could that be?!"
He was confident that even Unison would be able to deduce who’s fault it was, but decided to help him along by pointing directly at him just in case. Sadly, the Immortal apparently did not take the hint.
"Your-"
"Yours!" Unity shook his head.. "Now please repeat, and this time make sure not to be boring while you're at it."
Unison stole a long breath from the air and reluctantly let it all out. He liked to do that when Unity talked, perhaps it was the only way he had of keeping himself from bursting out into laughter at Unity’s amazing wit.
"Fine." He said, sounding exasperated. "The Factions told me to stress that you are to behave yourself during the duration of this tournament. Basically what that means is anytime you get the urge to do anything... anything at all. Just don't."

"That's very vague." Unity said, eyebrows raised. He walked to the center of the room and sat on the bed. "Does this include, talking, breathing, telling people that they should kill themselves, walking, singing?"
"Let me put this in terms you will understand. If you fuck this up for us. I will do everything short of kill you, Artificial." His voice was leveled and his tone didn't seem to alter when he spoke, he didn't even seem to be trying to intimidate Unity, he didn't need to, there was no need for such a thing when they both knew he was serious. Immortals rarely joked, after all.
"Fine." He groaned.
"Now our intel says that the Gemini arrived two days ago so I'll try to see if I can arrange a public interaction between the both of you. It'd help calm the nerves of our allies if they hear word of you and the new frontier of magic meeting."
"Oh I finally get to meet her?" His eyes lit up. "Took you long enough, I've been asking for this for years"
Unison rolled his eyes. "You can't really blame us for locking you away after what you did to the Olympus girl."
"Actually I can, and this might come as a surprise to you but I do.”
"You nearly started a war."
"It was for a worthy cause."
"You reached for her chest in the middle of a meeting."
"My mistake then-" Unity sighed. "It was for two worthy causes."
The look in Unison’s face made Unity almost lose his composure laughing then and there.
“Okay, but seriously though. You’ve seen the pair on her, they’re amazing. Huge, firm but still soft, with just the right amount of bounce.”
Unity could almost hear his handler’s teeth grind together when he replied.. "Of Course they were." "Look, I'll be going to see who I can talk to about setting up this meeting. You stay here and do whatever Hancho says you should."
"Who now?"
"...Hancho." he said, gesturing behind him to a tall bald man who's attire looked like it consisted primarily of freshly obtained skin. His eyes widened at being referenced to and he seemed to stand up a bit straighter.
"Oh."
"You're only just noticing him aren't you?"
"Don't be preposterous, no I'm not." He huffed. "I knew Ha-...Han-...um."
"Hancho." Unison said as he shook his head. He walked out the door with a sigh.
"Hancho, yes. I knew he was here the whole time. Hi Hancho.." Unity put on his most convincing smile, waving at the bald caveman.
"Hi." He replied with a bright smile and friendly eyes, he looked genuinely happy to be getting recognition. Poor thing.

"Okay, Hancho, I'm gonna be real with you. I actually didn't know you were there."
"It is alright, sir Eden." His words were slow to come, he clearly wasn't a native Gean speaker. "My duty is to serve." He bowed.
"Yeah, which is exactly why I didn't notice you. As a fusion of two gods...well, it's quite hard to find someone who's actually genuine and once I saw you my brain must have just not been able to comprehend what my eyes were telling it.." He mimicked a genuine smile to perfection, he'd spent days practicing it in the mirror and while it was fairly tedious, Authentics always fell for it.
"Oh...oh really?" Hancho’s eyes widened. This was a man that must have been invisible to the world around him, this was a man that was always the last to be considered by any scanning eyes. "That means a lot to me."
"Look-" he said, voice tender and eyes soft. "-Unison, he doesn't understand me, But...you do. Tell me, what are your dreams?"
"Well...My da in North always wanted me to be big general. I couldn't cut it no. still, work as guard in Bermuda is good too." The bald man said, voice wearing it's cracks like glass on the cusp of shattering.
Unity nodded slowly. "But?"
"But...I just want to make papa proud, yes. In his grave, I know he weeps for me everyday. His son, his brown cub, working as petty bodyguard. I want to make my home, Kulak, I want to make it proud." His eyes glistened with tears now, his nose and mouth being pulled at by emotion- perhaps trying to make a show of regret or shame against their master’s wishes?
Unity placed a warm hand on his shoulder, it vibrated as he weeped. "What if I told you I could make that all happen."
He looked up at Unity with teary, hopeful eyes.
"All you have to do Is let me through that door."
The man paused, considering before his eyes widened. He looked around as if he'd just discovered where he was and scrambled backwards. The previously vulnerable Hancho straightened up and backed away from Unity, barely regaining his composure. "N- no...Unison warned. He said you are conniving serpent. Can't let you through door"
Unity leaned back, the warm facade stripped right off to reveal his grin and he wore it cleanly across his lips. "How rude of him." He stood up from the bed and began idly stretching out his muscles.
The guard shook his head, glaring daggers at the boy who broke him down with just a few words. "You-"
His eyes widened as Unity punched himself. His nose broke on impact and began leaking blood unto the floor.
"Wh-what are you doing?!" The man shouted, panicked. God it hurt, Unity didn't like pain,no in fact he hated pain quite a lot but he assumed other people hated pain just as much as he did, which was why he went out of his way to cause them so much of it, harming himself though, now this right here was new ground as he didn't quite enjoy causing pain if the person receiving the pain was him.
Unity looked up and blinked through the tears streaming into his own eyes to see the confused terror scribbled across the man's face. He couldn't help but grin. "So...let's play a brain game shall we?" He said, voice nasally.
The man stared, sweat rolling down his cheeks. He was torn between concern, fear and a few other emotions. "What are you doing?"
"Unison walks in to see the person he's sworn to protect, bleeding profusely from the beatings of a body guard who's primitive tribe wanted to take revenge on the Factions for overtaking their land."
"He'll never believe you."
"Now tell me, what does he do to the worthless human that dare lay a hand on the future of the Factions."
"He'll never believe you!"
"Won't he?" Unity couldn’t help but giggle this time. "I made you believe I gave a shit about your worthless village didn't I?" He hummed, his lips discarded the grin and all that was left in his eyes was a cold slithering hue of malice. "A military might capable of turning countries to molten paste will descend upon your tiny little village and they will not loot, they will not pillage, they will burn it down until all the culture, the memories, the women and children are reduced to ash."
The man just stared, trembling and covered with enough sweat that the thought of touching him seemed even more repulsive than earlier. Unity let him stir for a few moments. Confusion was gone now, all that was left in this man was a deep pervading petrification at what he was dealing with: a vessel without a soul perhaps, a monster which wore human skin?. Unity only wished he could go fishing around in that brain of his.
"Now." He walked passed him and towards the door, nearly skipping in excitement. "I'll be on my way then." Unity opened the door and walked out, shutting Hanzo, Hanro, Hangro or whatever his name was in the room.
He shuddered at the sudden rush of freedom that pervaded his system. He sprinted past an old Onī, the angry red man yelled at him to stop being so reckless but he didn't, he wouldn't, nothing could stop him.

Synopsys: The Empire thought humanity died, and forgot all about it. The Empire is mistaken. A Note From the Author: This story was written as a National Novel Writing Month 2018 entrant. As such, its entire 50,000+ word length was written between November 1, 2018 and November 31, 2018. Overall, I would consider this no more than a polished draft. In that vein, the chapters have no names, only numbers. Special thanks to Chronus on youtube for answering my questions on NATO radio procedures! My Apologies to the Finnish Language, which I have abused in (probably) unforgivable ways to create Twisted Empire names. If anyone is interested, break the names up by commas and toss them into your favorite translation program (I used Google Translate, and tried to avoid umlauts and other accents) for some semi bilingual boni. If I got something wrong (and I know I did… somewhere…) let me know over on reddit and I will see what I can do to fix the mistake. Lyrics, where included, are cited in footnotes.
