《Monstrous (Rewrite)》Ch23. Agreement

My brother beside me finally noticed the intruder and went to jump up in preparation to draw his sword, but quickly thought better of it when a large pile of weapons and armor appeared behind him. A staring contest took place for a few minutes until I realized it was drilling a hole in my cigar with its gaze, and it suddenly came to me, it wanted to trade. I gave a relieved cackle and elbowed my brother before telling the other to grab a few cigars and a bottle of wine for our new guest. Bill, the one on cart duty, quickly rose onto two legs and rummaged around until it tossed out a cigar case and small bottle of our second finest wine to me which I promptly rolled to the, hopefully, new trading partner. The coyote easily opened the dual cigar case and grabbed one before leaning in close to the fire to light it.
The dull orange glow from its now lit cigar made one of its eyes to eerily glow and with each puff, the smoke danced around the creature. Suddenly it began to laugh madly which caused us to laugh as well until a deep and gravelly voice caused us pause.
“It's rare to see your kind this far into the cold.” It said in a series of barks and whimpers.
I was shocked that it knew our language, not many bother or have the chance to learn it.
“I could say the same to you coyot, I didn’t know you guys could even leave the deserts,” my brother beside me responded.
The coyote chewed on the cigar for a second while looking into the fire before peering back, “You are mistaken, I’m not a skinny,” it tapered out its final words in a laugh.

Huh, I thought for sure he was a dark shaman from the desert tribes, but I guess we were just taking a guess based on its current form. There was a silence for a while as we continued to puff away and after a little bit, I joined in on the conversation.
“We never give up the chance to practice our craft and make some money,” I took a long draw from the cigar, “You know, we are not that trusted or welcomed back home. Up here in the cold though we are embraced with open arms and wide smiles, especially in these tribes.”
We continued to sit in silence while drinking and smoking until the creature asked one last question, “How often do you pass through?”
Hmm, looks like we may have a new recurring trade partner, “Every other moon cycle usually.”
Taking that as the end, the coyote pushed over his still full wine bottle and half-empty cigar case which I assume means it wants more. Bill understood it the same way and grabbed one of our boxes of cigars and a pot of wine before placing it near the creature. With one final laugh, the darkness reached out and engulfed both the coyote and its new bounty. I shivered at the sight of such a hard feat being performed like a simple party trick. With the creature now gone, there was only one thing on our mind, what was that thing?
POV shift--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What a hospitable group, usually they are so fearful of me that they pass out or become incoherent. I dropped off my supplies into the shack’s basement and went back to retrieve the bones before placing them in a pile nearby. With that done I resumed my previous mission of gathering information about the village, but after a few hours, nothing particularly interesting happened so I decided to do some infiltration. Dropping down from the treetop I maintained my coyote form and leaped over the wall. I landed softly on a residential home and began to stalk the shadows. Soon I remembered why I’m not a fan of large settlements, I could hear every heartbeat and every breath. I could sense the iron and metal tools and utensils in every house as well as the calm brain waves of the sleeping residents. The smell of unwashed humans lingered on every surface, along with the smell of animal feces wafting from the barn.

All the smell and sensations caused me a slight headache, should I dull my senses? I don’t really like doing that, but It should be fine as long as I keep an eye on magic signatures. Ugh, I forgot how much settlements cause me sensory overloads, its not even the height of activity or anything, everyone’s asleep. I dropped down from the rooftops and started peering through windows in a very creepy like fashion, there’s no helping it really, in search of nothing in particular. The interiors looked like the work of trappers, with abundant furs everywhere. I didn’t find any bedroom, so I moved to the second floor and found a lit fire pit and several people wrapped in furs asleep around it. I had smelled smoke before, but I thought it was a fireplace or something, not a stone fire pit on the second floor.
I took a close look at the internal activity of the residents and found that, like everything else, their magic content was abnormally high. I debated whether or not to snoop around some dreams but left it for later in case there was a dream shaman around. I dropped down and checked the other houses until I got to the biggest, by a slight margin, house on the block. Hopefully, it belongs to the leader, if there was anyone’s dream, I should snoop around in it was his, or her. I was very careful with my approach because of a rough ward surrounding the perimeter. Quickly my caution paid off when I detected very thin lines of thread crisscrossing the surrounding ground. With smooth steps, I weaved through the early warning systems until I got to the window. As I placed a paw on the window seal it started to throb slightly causing me to remove it quickly, you would think that after all these years after that incident I would remember that the layer protecting me from iron was damaged on that hand, but noooo I always forget.

Earth to Rae
Rae, who has had a terrible childhood, died saving Mary -his sister from his family who saved and adopted him when he was younger- from a stalker. Afterward, a god who looked no older than a 14-year old boy, expecting his sister, appeared before him. Rae's soul is then sent into the body of a goblin vampire in a world called Altera. Now, Rae must journey through a new world that strangely resembles many fantasy worlds created through literature and video games he’s familiar with to get back to Earth and reunite with his adoptive mother and sister. Rae: Goblin? Vampire? Cursed? And what the hell is Electra's Gift?! ***Warning: first story ever. Will definitely have many errors although I will try my best to rectify them beforehand. If you have any constructive and *not* abusive criticism, then please do not hesitate to comment. Also, the prologue is a bit slow but will have a large time skip in Chapter One.***

Hazelsong: A LitRPG Novel
Release Schedule: I will be moving to a set release schedule as of 1/1/2022. A new chapter will be released every Saturday at Noon EST. If I have time that week for a second chapter, I will leave a note on the Saturday chapter and post the second chapter on Sunday at Noon EST. An up to date character sheet for the MC Erik will also be posted on Sundays at 12:15 PM. If life happens and I am for some reason unable to write that week, I will post a blank chapter giving you an update on where I am with my writing. Saturday Noon EST: First weekly chapter Sunday Noon EST: Second weekly chapter (if I have the time) Sunday 12:15 EST: Updated character sheet Synopsis: Years after surviving a deadly accident, Erik struggles to come to terms with his painful disability. When offered the chance to playtest the world's first full immersion VRMMO, he wants nothing more than to retreat back into his secluded life, until he learns what Hazelsong really offers. An escape from the pain. Hazelsong is a world of magic and adventure, a place where friendships are formed, loot is won, and glory and fame are there for the taking. While the threats feel real and the stakes are always high, there is only one thing Erik is really in danger of. Forgetting which world is actually real. Story Themes: Hazelsong is a LitRPG novel that not only explores the fictional world of a realistic online fantasy realm but the life of a man suffering in silence from chronic pain and PTSD due to a significant physical injury and disability. Mental health is an important subject and we all know at least one person in our lives who has or is dealing with some form of mental illness. I plan on putting my best effort forward to represent these illnesses in a fair and accurate manner. Not as a cheap plot device to help make the protagonist more unique, but to help paint an accurate picture for those of us who have been lucky enough to not have to suffer in silence. About the Author: I am Ash Durra, general video game nerd and a connoisseur of fantasy and sci-fi of all shapes and sizes. Needless to say, I am not a professional author (B.S. and M.S. in Education, 8 years teaching). After really getting into LitRPG novels over the past several years, I found my way to Royal Road, which has inspired me to use my spare time to begin writing a story of my own creation. As this is a hobby, I am not writing and posting chapters on any kind of specific schedule at the moment, though my goal is to post on average 1-2 chapters a week. I am incredibly excited to share this story with others as I write it, and I look forward to any constructive feedback about how I can improve in my writing.

Artifice: Iysinfyr
Nalulthyn is the young daughter of a duke that is one day asked for a favor. This favor involves the adopted daughter of the duke from a neighboring area. This girl has had a traumatic past and has closed herself off from the world completely and reacts violently when touched by anyone but her personal maid. The duke hopes that a girl close to the age of his adoptive daughter will be what she needs to recover, but things are never as easy as they seem. First is that this adopted daughter is a Terran, a rare being from a different world that has skin and hair as white as snow and an almost alien build. Second is that there is a power to this girl, one that makes her recovery all the more dangerous to Nalulthyn and perhaps beyond. Author's note: This is a soft reboot of Artifice: Tools of the Gods. As I wrote the other story years ago I felt it would be better to do this approach as my writing has changed and improved since then. For now only two characters will return though I might reintroduce others later in the story. Even though this has the gore tag, I don't plan on being excessive with it. Most chapters shouldn't have any. The only reason I have it is to be realistic with the descriptions.

Manaseared
Adventuring is for losers. Only the absolutely impoverished or the megalomaniacally mad would stoop to graverobbing and dungeon-delving to put food on their tables. As a career it is dangerous, unreliable, illegal, and infinitely unpleasant. Most who choose this life have no other options. They're the seventh sons of seventh sons, the disowned, bastards, impoverished and desperate, and nearly always young. And they are, without fail, losers. Eris is an adventurer. Eris is a loser. Like most of her make she's a teenage runaway with no other options. Unlike her company, she isn't fodder for the meatgrinder. She's beautiful, brilliant, and a talented magician; she's also vain, callous, selfish, and proud. This is her story, as she grows into adulthood, masters her abilities, and learns to care about more than just herself. Manaseared is an episodic fantasy adventure serial. It's also a pastiche of early D&D and RPGs in general, and an attempt to explore at what it might really mean to be a first level adventurer.
