《Light of Returning Darkness》CH 113 - Head Grabbing Demons (1)

First Elder concluded and ordered: “Alright, let’s begin the Preliminary Round! All participants, gather in front of me!”
Once everyone was in place, First Elder waved his hand, and the arena was divided into six separate smaller arenas. Each had a number made of light floating at its center.
First Elder declared: “Next. A number will be shown on your student badge, indicating the arena you will be fighting at. So, go to the waiting area of your designated arena.”
Everyone looked at their own student badge.
Feng Luotian saw his number and scanned the rest of the team: “I will be fighting at Arena 1 together with Brother He and Brother Wei, huh? In the case that we have to fight each other, let’s give it our best!”
He Chen and Wei Ci nodded with an excited expression.
Feng Luotian said the rest: “Everyone, good luck! I know that you all are strong enough to get into the top ten, but we better be careful. We might have to fight some of the previous Feathers.”
After accepting a reminder from Feng Luotian, they all went separate ways. Sun Wuji went to Arena 3, Mei Yue’er to Arena 5, and Tu Lingxi to Arena 6.
“The ones with a glowing light on their badges will be fighting first. Get in the area and show us everything you have got! LET THE GREAT FIGHT BEGIN!” First Elder commenced the Preliminary Round.
A few moments later, two participants in each arena had their badges pulsing in white light. One of those at Arena 1 was Wei Ci. He could not help but comment: “I am the first, huh? Is it because I am the earliest to register my name, I wonder?”
Ten of them jumped onto the arena at the same time, causing his opponent to complain out loud: “What is this?! First Elder said that only those who had a glowing light on their badges would be able to fight. Why are you all here? Are you trying to break the rules?!”
Wei Ci held his hands up: “Calm down, Brother. These are my clones, making me one identity. However, to make it fair for you, I will be fighting you alone. How about it?”
Even after realizing the fact, Wei Ci’s opponent did not fare any better. Instead of feeling relieved that he did not have to fight all of them, he felt insulted for being looked down upon. He barked at Wei Ci: “Don’t you dare look down on me! If you are one, then come at me together, so you don’t cry after you lose.”

Wei Ci casually said: “Don’t worry, Brother. I alone am enough.”
“You!” His opponent’s face became bright red with anger: “Since you wish to lose, die!”
The guy burst out all of his Theríon at Seven Fangs and stormed forward, intending to crush Wei Ci in one strike.
As for Wei Ci, a profound light flashed across his eyes as he calculated his opponent’s traveling path and speed. With a wave of his hand, golden chains emerged from the ground and restricted the guy’s movement.
Under the effect of [Gold Lock], the opponent’s complexion turned grave because he could move in the slightest. He looked down at what was binding his movement and tried his hardest to struggle and free himself from this disabling skill, but to no avail.
Feeling something was off, he decided to look forward to Wei Ci and his clones right then. However, what he saw were his nine other duplications. There was no longer any sign of Wei Ci.
A moment later, the scene suddenly changed. The nine clones the opponent saw just now switched to a headless body as blood gushing from its neck while he watched that scene from the low angle. He was confused at first, but he realized that it was his own body after a careful look. He was shocked, and the feeling of death rushed into his mind before the light dimmed down.
Wei Ci’s opponent vanished from the arena and reappeared outside in the waiting area. When he woke up, he found himself completely uninjured. Trying to figure out what was going on, he looked around and found a strange expression on each of the people surrounding him. In the end, when he saw Wei Ci and his clones standing on the stage, he finally realized that it was not a dream. He was killed instantly right after he was caught in those golden chains.
The crowd was still in a trance, astonished by whatever transpired before their eyes. The fight only started not a minute ago, but it was already over with one guy taking another’s head right off.
Wei Ci only used a small amount of Theríon to activate his [Gold Lock] and take his opponent’s head, so it was still hard to determine his actual cultivation by just that.
Meanwhile, his opponent released an aura of Seven Fangs, which was above average in all the participants. Nevertheless, he still lost in such a rapid fashion without Wei Ci needing to utilize any more Theríon than crushing an ant. The situation made the crowd look at Wei Ci in a new light as a powerful dark horse in this Feather Ranking Competition.

As for those cultivators under Seven Fangs, they trembled at the sight and planned to give up right away if they were to face this guy in the arena.
On the other hand, Feng Luotian sighed in his heart: “Let’s hope that he will not become an enemy in the future. I really like this guy. His personality, attitude, thinking, calculation, and fighting style are similar to mine. Even the way he took people’s heads off is similar to mine. We will make a pair of great buddies if fate permits it.”
After Wei Ci got off the stage, the next contestants entered the ring. The second battle was not as fast and frightening as the first, but every spectator still enjoyed the fight.
The battles went on. He Chen quickly dominated his opponent with one level higher than him, making him another dark horse.
At the twentieth match, Feng Luotian finally got a chance to enter the stage. His opponent happened to be a tall man with an athletic build. Although he was not as huge as Mo Qianqing, the Gladiator, the guy was still giving off an aura of those with tyrannical power. He released his Theríon as a Nine Fangs Fighter right of the bat.
Everyone here recognized Feng Luotian and knew that he defeated Sikong Jiu, the Speed Star, about a month ago. While Sikong Jiu was only Eight Fangs, he could definitely take care of those with higher cultivation. Being able to defeat such a man indicated that Feng Luotian was immensely powerful in his own right. That was why his opponent did not plan to look down on him, even though he thought that Feng Luotian had lower cultivation.
With all the serious preparation that he readied himself for an intense battle against God’s Son, he was immediately astounded by what Feng Luotian was doing when he looked straight at his opponent.
Right after Feng Luotian got inside the [Ultimate Battle Formation], he repeatedly used each and every one of his available skills, spending Theríon at a ridiculous speed.
Since [Pinnacle Flash Lightning], [Underworld Physique], and [Whirlwind Armor] were activating skills, he ceaselessly activated and deactivated them. As [Chilling Touch] was an attacking skill, Feng Luotian used it and continually punched the ground.
Not only his opponent but also everyone witnessing this was confused with what he was doing. Some found it interesting and started laughing.
On the contrary, Peacock Lord, Supreme Elder, and First Elder looked at each other. They all knew the reason behind his action. However, there was a question that needed an answer, so Peacock Lord asked the other two: “How did he know about the secret way to train using the formation? Did you tell him about it, Lord Father?”
Mei Hengkong shook his head: “I rarely speak to him ever since the sparrows visited us that day. So, no, I did not tell him about it. Maybe, it was that mysterious master of his telling him about it.”
Peacock Lord and First Elder exchanged glances and nodded in agreement.
At that time, Feng Luotian had already finished whatever he planned to do. His body was soaked in sweat. His breath was panting. He still left the [Underworld Physique] activated, but he only had a last bit of Theríon left to use for executing one attack. He looked at his opponent and said: “Well, let’s end this, shall we?”
The opponent harrumphed: “Is this how you wish to give me a handicap before we fight, God’s Son? If that is the case, then I have to say that you are too arrogant to think that you can defeat me in that state. Even though you are strong enough to defeat Sikong Jiu, I am not that ….”
A deafening boom interjected the sentence as Feng Luotian vanished from the scene. One split second later, a similar scene occurred for everyone to see.
The opponent’s head was detached and slowly disappeared from the stage, together with its body, making all of the jaws drop down in shock. This guy was a Nine Fangs Fighter they were walking about, but the guy was dead in the same manner as the previous Seven Fangs Fighter.
Nonetheless, that was not the end of this shocking series. Feng Luotian, the victor of the match, ruthlessly stabbed his hand into his chest and dug his own heart out before crushing it into pieces.
When they saw Feng Luotian using his skills and punching the ground, they thought he was insane. However, after witnessing this scene, he had become a psychopath in their eyes.

Follow Alan through his adventures, and find out for yourselves how he deals with the challenges thrown at him by a new world, while struggling with the issues brought with him from his old one. * Author’s note: A fair warning. This is the first time I’ve published anything, and basically the first time I’ve written anything more than mandatory school-stuff. The story will probably have inconsistencies, grammatical errors (not my native tongue, though that excuse is getting old), and potentially confusing (missing?) plot. I will naturally do my best to write something worth reading, but my main goal in writing this story is to have fun and explore the limits of my own creativity. My hope in publishing it here, is that I’ll reach someone who enjoy the story, and can push me forward towards writing more, as it is difficult at times to find the motivation to write just for myself. Additionally, I can’t really promise to have regular updates, as I have a full-time job that often likes to take the ‘full-time’ part literally, and a sporadic social life that occasionally surprises me (happy surprises mostly, so I shouldn’t complain). I’ll aim for once a week to start with, and take it from there. Happy reading! Cover photo by Jeff Hire (/photographer/gun4hire-58415), from https://freeimages.com/.

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
