《Light of Returning Darkness》CH 75 : THERÍON SONAR

After Feng Luotian survived the [Ground Slam] from the Wing Realm Earth Dwelling Mountain Monkey by activating [Underworld Physique] and repeatedly punching the ground to create a hole deep enough for him to avoid the damage then jumping into that hole just before the land tsunami went over his position, he found himself dropping much further than he expected.
With the land tsunami covering the hole’s exit, the place Feng Luotian fell into became nothing but darkness.
With a burst of Theríon, the purple-golden illuminated the surrounding area. As a result of Feng Luotian seeing the place clearly, he noticed that he was in a large tunneling cave. And there were three paths to take from where he was currently standing.
Looking up, the cave’s ceiling was much higher than Feng Luotian could jump and make an exit through the way he had jumped into. Unless he was a Wing Realm Master, who could literally fly, Feng Luotian could only find another way to get out of this place.
Following some consideration, Feng Luotian took out a wisp of conscience and flung it upward. The wisp traveled through the ceiling and stopped right above the landslide, which was afterward picked up by Sun Wuji.
Feng Luotian softly muttered: “I hope everything will go the way I intended. Now, which path should I take?”
He closed his eyes and gently released his Theríon. With a soft boom, an invisible layer of Theríon originated from him and traveled toward every direction in the spherical form.
Everything that had even the slightest amount of Theríon would be detected once this layer passed through them.
This technique was called [Theríon Sonar]. It was used to sense any entity with Theríon in a wide range. The maximum range would be determined by the user’s cultivation; the same as Theríon spent would be by how well they were with the technique, so no need to mention a reincarnator like Feng Luotian, he would be able to execute the technique with just a bit of Theríon.
However, [Theríon Sonar] was not recommended to use most time. Why?
The first reason was that once the Theríon touched upon them, the ones being detected would also know that they were spied on and also from which direction [Theríon Sonar] was originating.
The second reason was the technique was sometimes unreliable. Some cultivators and monsters had abilities, skills, or treasures to bypass a simple detection.
Not only the user was made known after using the technique, but they could also get inaccurate intel. The only time people would use the technique was when they were confident in their strength and did not care whether they were caught.
As for Feng Luotian, he knew that there would only be monsters at Talon Realm or at most a few Wing Realm in this dark tunnel. Because monsters still did not develop their intelligence at that level, even if they sensed the technique, they would only be alerted for a moment and after confirming there was no threat around them, they would continue to do their own business. That was why he used [Theríon Sonar] without hesitation.

After receiving information from the technique, Feng Luotian could sense approximately the same number and strength of monsters in the two pathways. And the last path was out of the question because the monsters there were much more terrifying than the other two, which left two paths for him to choose.
But after a sniff, Feng Luotian said: “Umm. This way should be the best one since its smell is not as foul as the other. Isn’t someone once said: If in doubt, always follow your nose!?”
He began his journey into the chosen path. When he was at it, he restrained his aura as much as possible, because constantly activating aura just to illuminate this dark place was consuming his Theríon at a rapid pace. And now, he was out of his Moon Lotus Seed, so he could not afford to wastefully spend any more Theríon.
Feng Luotian kept the aura until the surrounding area was barely visible to him and slowly walked through the place with caution instead.
After carefully treading for about 10 minutes, Feng Luotian found himself in another huge cavern. And this was where he sensed the nearest monster when he used [Theríon Sonar].
When Feng Luotian entered the chamber, the floor felt sticky, making it a little hard to walk. He amplified his aura a bit to observe what was on the ground: “Oh?”
With a little surprise, Feng Luotian decided to unleash the full aura to see everything in the cavern. Spider webs: thousands of thousands of silk lines were formed into sticky meshes covering every square meter of the cavern’s surface. But those webs were not the only things that caught Feng Luotian’s attention.
Other than the sticky environment, what was constantly moving on top of the spider webs inside the cavern gave a corner of Feng Luotian’s lip a little twitch.

…
Upon seeing hundreds of Kronos’s panels across the cavern, Feng Luotian could not help but gave out a wry smile: “Here is the nest of Diamond Shell Spiders? Hehe … I don’t know if this is a stroke of good luck or bad luck?”
At least five hundred spiders were scattering all over the place: on the floor, on the wall, and on the ceiling. Although Feng Luotian could deal with them because their strength was not so strong, he was clearly outnumbered.
They looked similar to spiny orb-weavers but with a grander size. They ranged from one-foot to two-meter span according to their strength. The stronger, the bigger.
The shells on their backs were made of diamond, increasing their defense. Even more, those diamonds were not in round shape. They formed into spikes all over their shells. If the attacker was not careful, they would get a sieved hand instead.

But the most frightening aspect of all was that these monsters were not solo hunters, instead, they attacked their preys in hordes with an incredible synchronization.
Combining with a sticky environment, not only these tough spiders were very hard to kill, but they were also deadly to anyone passing by.
Nonetheless, their bright sides were enough to attract people to hunt them down.
No need to mention diamonds as they could be used to make jewelry or girlish accessories. However, in this cultivation world where fighting was inevitable, armaments were more valuable than those decorative items, so mostly these diamond shells would be sold to forgers as materials to make defensive armaments, such as armor plates, shields, bracers, greaves, and et cetera.
And those defensive armaments that were crafted using those shells would be high-grade ones, which meant they were considered to be high-grade materials.
Even though they were not as valuable as the tail lion’s blades Feng Luotian had procured previously, their number could make up for the gap.
One month ago, with the Blade Tail Lions, Feng Luotian used his past knowledge to identify their location and toyed with them as he already knew how to hunt them. But this time, he had basically ventured into a treasure house by chance, and only his strength would be able to determine whether it was good luck or bad luck.
Noticing a new savory entering their den, the spiders made their wriggling and squeaking sound echoing the whole cavern. They did not taste any human for such a long time.
Not even one second after they instinctively agreed on their assaulting coordination, one spider after another swiftly approached Feng Luotian in a spearhead formation from three directions: left, right, and above.
Feng Luotian no longer acted carelessly and confronted the situation with a more serious attitude.
With a sound of a lightning strike, he activated [Pinnacle Flash Lightning] and dashed away to escape the incoming encirclement to the front.
The spiders instantly reformed their formation and enclosed Feng Luotian from all sides with even more speed. The ones on the ceiling began to drop down like hails.
Feng Luotian hurriedly equipped his [Bone Claw Gauntlets]. And together with the destructive [Underworld Physique] activation, he ruthlessly bulleted himself toward one side of the spider horde.
Spotting their target’s powerful charge heading toward them, the spiders on that side quickly aligned themselves into a four-meter diamond wall, while the rest was ceaselessly making their siege.
After seeing the towering wall, Feng Luotian let out a soft chuckle: “Smart, but are you fast enough?”
Following a flash of lightning sparkled, Feng Luotian vanished from one side and a series of explosions bombed the other side of the horde. Unprepared for this surprise attack, the spiders from another side suffered an unstoppable onslaught from Feng Luotian.
Thanks to his battle experience and his [Momentum Eyes], the spiky diamonds held no threat to him at all. One spider after another was smashed apart under his ferocious palm strike.
Even in such an intense battle where Feng Luotian had to face hundreds of monsters while reflecting and dodging the ones from above, he still had the time to collect every monster core from the spider he killed.

Seeing the information, Feng Luotian could not help but exclaim: “Great!! These cores can benefit both of my skills!! It seems I need to train here for a while. Can’t waste such an opportunity, can I?”
The more he fought, the more efficient he was. After a minute or so, Feng Luotian only needed to activate his aura to keep the place barely visible and keep Theríon spent to the very minimum. Nonetheless, the fight was not easy for him at all. Being in an environment that could reduce his speed and restricted his vision, together with the overwhelming number that could come at him from all sides, Feng Luotian still took some strikes once in a while. Even with the [Evil Cyclone] that generated every time he hit the spider, the regeneration by absorbing the cyclone could barely keep up with the wounds he received. Despite that, Feng Luotian still chose to spend as little Theríon as possible, because once he was out of Theríon, that would be the end of him.
Just like that, the fight went on until there was nothing left in the cavern except the blood-soaked Feng Luotian.
