《The Lions of Dawrtaine》37. Circles

Milo punches. His knuckles stop half an inch from the cell wall. He turns, rotates at the hips, and raises his left arm to block an imaginary attack coming towards his face. His hips rotate again, as he winds over the opponent’s arm to capture it before swinging back into a throw. He steps forward with a low kick—noting where the equations stop glowing—and continues forward to address the next attacker with a pair of palms to the torso.
His legs shake. His shoulder burns. The part of his mind always measuring tells him that he’s repeated this sequence from the First Circle seventy-one times. At an average of eleven minutes twenty three seconds per sequence, that’s 13.47 hours. He’s rested in between, but it’s hard to settle—let alone sleep—under all this stone. He needs to keep moving. To stop is to panic. His body needs time to recover though. Soon. One more sequence, and then he’ll stop. He’ll lie down and hold his fear for as long as possible. And when he can’t hold anymore, he’ll start the next sequence.
The door opens. Milo turns to see the outline of a giant framed by light from the corridor—Sab. The necessary calculations link together, and Milo is suddenly running, condensing the equations in his body to duck under Sab’s arms. The map in his head unfolds. It’s woefully incomplete but the best he can do under the circumstances. Sprinting, Milo pelts down the corridor, turns left, and uses his long legs to take the stairs three at a time. Corridor after corridor, calculations point to the most efficient path for each turn. They do their best to conserve his momentum.
He surprises two people wearing masks and dives between them. The equations transform the leap into a roll, and he comes up running. Behind him, Sab knocks the two aside with a grunt.

Lights and doors flash by. Milo’s breath is as steady as he can make it, focusing all his attention on the synchronization of his body with the environment around it. He jumps and uses a wall to make the next turn. He gets ten feet before realizing there’s a door in the way. His hands reach for the handle, but it’s locked and inertia crashes him into the door. Sab comes around the corner, not slowing down. The giant drops his center and spreads his arms wide in a flying tackle. Milo is picked up and slammed into the door a second time. The door squeals in protest.
Dazed, Milo tries to slip free, but Sab’s grip is enormous. He pins Milo and knees him in the stomach. A big, meaty hand smashes into Milo’s face. The world goes sideways and sparkles. Sab hits him again for good measure, flickering Milo’s consciousness.
The equations are all in disarray as he’s dragged step-by-step from one corridor to the next, down one stairwell to another, until they reach a room too big and too well-lit to be his cell. Milo is picked up and strapped to a table. They bind his arms, his legs, and his head. The table swings upright for a dizzying view of his captors—Sab wearing a black mask and two others guarding a door. There’s another table occupied, and in between is a cart like you’d find in a hospital operating room. A collection of tools is being sterilized in a bowl of alcohol. A comfortable chair faces the two tables. The panic that Milo had been holding inside starts to slip free.
The occupant of the other table says, “It’s okay, Milo. You’ll be all right. I’ve seen it.”
He doesn’t understand the words at first. It takes time to piece them together, but the voice is familiar, and the equations coalesce to tell him that it’s Noor. She’s shaved her head, and there’s a line of stitches across her scalp. Dark circles, nearly black, are under her eyes.
The guarded door opens, and the Scholar walks through. Sitting in the chair, he says, “I was hoping to wait and make this a more pleasant experience, but time presses us all. We must move forward by as direct a means as possible.”

Earth Ravaged: The Alliance Chronicles Book 1
Originally published on Amazon in 2013, now published here as a serial for the free enjoyment of all. Book 3 to come later this year. This one could also stand a complete re-write with the knowledge and skill I've developed in the interim, and I may do so once I have pushed out chapters for the third book in the series. In the not too distant future, a group of seven people will set out on a mission of exploration to a nearby star system. Their destination is the Tau Ceti system, one of ten planned destinations as part of a new privately-funded space programme, involving many countries across the Earth. However, old problems still exist, and while they make their successful launch, they have no idea what begins to take place at home, what they will face on their journey, and who decides to pay Earth a visit while they are gone.

A Wheel Inside a Wheel
Two brilliant young me, Reinhard von Musel and Yang Wen-li, are forced to flee the countries of their birth and become refugees on opposite sides of a century long galactic war. While they both struggle to adapt to their new lives, their obvious talent propels them to the forefront of the war. Their choices will shape their adoptive homelands forever, and their clash will decide the future of the galaxy. This story is broken up into volumes, each following one half of the conflict. You can read them in chronological order, or you can follow just Yang or Reinhard. See individual descriptions below. Part One - Speaking in Tongues When Yang Wen-li’s father dies, the only thing that he inherits is a mountain of debt, which can only be paid off with fifteen years of his life. Wanting to escape that indentured servitude, Yang flees his homeland and takes up a false identity in the Galactic Empire, a hyper-stratified society where stepping out of line is punishable with imprisonment or death. Yang enrolls in the Imperial Officers’ Academy to study history, but despite his unusual and unmistakeable talent as both a tactician and a scholar, his classmates resent him for being a visible outsider. When tensions at the school boil over and several of Yang’s classmates attempt to murder him, Yang finds an unlikely ally in the top student in the class: the aloof Oskar von Reuenthal. But Reuenthal and Yang both have secrets, secrets which could destroy both their lives and their newfound friendship. [70k words, complete] Part One (Alternate) - Talking Without Speaking When Oskar von Reuenthal enrolls at the Imperial Officers' Academy, he doesn’t expect to make real friends. The IOA is a competitive place, and Reuenthal has never been well liked. But when a foreign student shows up to challenge him for the top spot in the class, Reuenthal can’t look away. [77k words, complete] Part Two - Life out of Balance When Reinhard von Musel's mother learns that her husband is about to sell her daughter to become the concubine of the Kaiser, she takes her two children, Reinhard and Annerose, and flees to the Free Planets Alliance, where the three of them must start a new life. [129k words, complete] Part Three - Servants of the Pharaoh Now an officer in His Majesty's fleet, Yang Wen-li struggles to maintain his principles in the face of everything that is expected of him. When he's unwillingly drawn into the politics of the court, he has to use all of his talents to keep himself and his new friends out of danger. [173k words, complete] Short - Whatever It Takes to Keep the Body Warm After their falling out, Reuenthal and Mittermeyer are both posted to the brutal wasteland of Capche-Lanka. It's difficult to hold a grudge when you're just trying to survive. [23k words, complete] Short - Keep the Home Fires (Burning) Three soldiers. Two bodies to be buried. One haunted house. [33k words, complete] Part Four - Lighting Out for the Territories While his sister has joined the fierce Rosen Ritter regiment, Reinhard's fame has earned him a post stuck on Phezzan. Instead of getting to fight, he's caught up in a web of secrets, including the shelter and care of a mysterious refugee from the Empire. Separated from everyone he cares about, Reinhard is forced to make some unexpected allies, and make connections with old friends. [147k words, complete] Part Five - Serpent's Mouth, Serpent's Teeth After having sacrificed his freedom to save his best friend's life, Yang must figure out how to win, and not just survive, the largest civil war in human history.
