《The Supernatural Case of an Accidental Time Traveler》Not Forgotten - Part 004

“There is one thing. Do you still have Silva’s blade here?” Scott asked.
“Of course, I have kept it safe here since you asked me to store it.”
“Could you get it for me?”
“Sure thing, but like I said before. You better not do anything stupid.”
“I don’t plan on it.” Scott said as Monty started heading to the back and disappearing through a door in the back.
* * *
SIlva walked into the old pub with a young Scott tailing behind. Monty was talking with another customer so they sat down at a small table by a window. Scott wasn’t exactly keen on sitting across from the woman he had just witnessed kill several monsters in the blink of an eye but she promised him food so he went along with it.
“So Scott, how old are you?” Silva asked as she put her elbow on the table and her hand under her chin in an almost seductive way.
“Twelve… I think.” he answered.
“And why exactly were you out so late at night?”
“I was looking for somewhere to sleep.”
“Do you not have a home?”
“No, and no family either.”
“Well, would you like to be part of my family? You’ll always have a place to sleep and never have to worry about food.”
“That sounds too good to be true.”
“Well, there is a catch. You’ll have to train under me and help me with my work.”
“And does that work include killing monsters.”
“So you know about monsters?”
“Of course I do, once you’ve been on the streets all the time you can see what is hiding in plain sight.”
“That’s a good point, but what do you know about them?” she asked right as Monty walked over.

“Ah Ms.Silva what can I do for you today?”
“Two platters and some water.” she replied.
“And who might this be?”
“His name is Scott. He might be my apprentice.”
“Hey, I haven’t agreed to anything yet!” Scott shouted out.
“I would suggest learning to control your emotions, child. Your fear is showing.” Monty said to Scott with a smile before walking away.
“I guessed that you would have to think about it but I am pretty sure you’re going to take me up on my offer. Now, what do you know about monsters?”
“A lot of them live like normal people and aren’t scary at all, but there are plenty of them that make people disappear when they think no one is looking.”
“That’s pretty spot on but I wouldn’t call all those creatures monsters. A lot of people just call them the creatures of the night. What makes them a monster is if they decide that their wants are more important than someone's life. Those creatures you saw me kill earlier had been eating people because it tasted better than what they could find at any market. They didn’t deserve to continue living.”
“But how did you turn them to dust?”
“Silver, you can use silver to kill any creature of the night. My gloves are lined with it and my sword is made from it. However, a lot of monsters will die from conventional weapons but it’s a lot more difficult and some are basically immune to everything except silver. On top of that their body will still remain as a corpse unless killed with silver so it’s a lot easier to just use silver.”
“So if I become your apprentice, you’ll let me stay with you and have plenty to eat?”
“Of course.”
“One last question. How old are you?”
“I’m seventeen, but didn’t anyone ever tell you that it’s rude to ask a woman their age?”

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.

The Bronze Players of Recreation
The world of Creation has seen a recent explosion of what can only be called an adventurer’s culture over the past few decades. People who were once looked at as nothing more than lower class mercenaries rose to the ranks of heroes and legends as adventuring became recognized as an idealized lifestyle of overcoming hardship and finding triumph. With the establishment of a guild-based government system on the continent of Terramania, adventurers were soon legitimized and adventuring became a phenomenon universally accepted around the world. Redlette had retreated from this world to live on Earth for the remainder of her years, having been born and outcast by the gods of Creation. However, upon meeting a friend that she treasured dearly, she found herself longing for a return to her world—she wanted to experience it properly and go on adventures with someone whom she holds dear. Putting a plan into action, she meets with her friend, an awkward, nerdy boy by the username of Herring who she’d only known through years of playing online games with him, and invites him to go on this fantastic adventure with her. An adventure in another world had always been an impossible dream for Herring, but when he suddenly found himself with the opportunity to embark on one, he knew it wouldn’t be as simple as books and shows made it out to be. Redlette was notorious for rushing into things without thinking them through, and he was flighty and weak. In the games they played together, they rarely grasped victory. They were losers through and through, both in hobby and life. Despite this, though, he takes the leap and sets off with Redlette into the world of Creation. Together they only had one goal: to have fun and go on the adventure of their lives. This time, they’d establish a guild of their own and be free to take on whatever exploits their hearts desired. This is the story of the founding of their guild. Author’s Notes: -My writing style is largely based off of the absurd amount of light novels I’ve read and anime I’ve watched, so it may come off as cartoonish or exaggerative at times. If that isn’t your thing, I’d steer clear of this story.-Not an MMO story.-No numerical stats.-Relatively slow pacing.-Posts are between 2000-5000 words weekly after Chapter 1.
