《The Supernatural Case of an Accidental Time Traveler》Beginnings - Part Thirty-Two

We walked a little ways into the old cottage style town with its cobblestone roads and its lush green fields surrounding it. Beyond the fields to the east was a forest that the Willowisps seemed to be coming from. The people were bustling in the town despite it starting to get chilly from the September air. As far as I could tell there was no danger here. The people were happy and children ran along playing happily without any kind of guidance.
“So, Scott?” I started.
“So, what?”
“Who was that guy you got into an argument with at the Agency? You never told us and you seemed to dislike him quite a bit.” I said.
“Is that what it seemed like to you?” he asked before letting out a sigh.”His name is Compton and we go way back. He might be my longest known living friend.”
“Well, I’ve never met him.” Elysif said sternly as if she was jealous. Which was weird for her.
“He has always been busy with missions and could never visit. He came to visit me before Mama Louise’s party though. I was going to introduce you two to him but you both disappeared before I could.”
“Did he tell you what his secret mission was?” I asked.
“No, and I was just giving him crap. Of course he would tell Arbus the details of the mission, Arbus and Mary have archived everything since the time of the Knights of the Templar.”
“I didn’t know the Agency was affiliated with the Knight of the Templar!” Elysif said surprised.
“We were the Knight of the Templar.” Scott replied in his usual crass, smartass tone.
“”What!”” we both exclaimed.
“Yep, after the Knights of the round table we became the Knights of the templar. After that we were scattered all over the world as traitors and fighting monsters as wanderers. We couldn’t keep the peace that way so Mordred gathered as many remnants of the order and started over in the early fifteen-hundreds. We were unnamed for a while until we decided to go with the title of Agency in the mid seventeen-hundreds.” Scott explained.

It sounded like a history lesson so we took the explanation as is. “So what are we doing in town?” I asked.
“We need to talk to the people about the Willowisps without mentioning monsters or the supernatural. People start to think you’re crazy if you do because we do a pretty good job and make sure the general populace isn’t aware of its existence.” He replied.
“So basically what you’re saying is that we need to ask if anything strange has happened recently?” Elysif asked.
“Exactly.”
“Should we split up?” I asked.
“That might be for the best. We could meet back at the inn at sundown.” Elysif said.
“I agree.” Scott said. So we split up, Scott went south, Elysif went north, and I went West. Since Scott went south back towards the inn I can only assume he was going to drink and sleep but I’ll wait until later to deal with that. Despite everything Scott gave me a job and a home so I owed it to him to try and do my job at the very least.
Without much to go on I went to the nearest shop looking building and took a look inside. It looked like a bakery. There were stacks of bread on the shelves and even more on trays behind. In the back was a large metal oven that was heated by a wood flame. A woman stood bent over beside it throwing a few logs in. She was a stout woman with her hair tied up under a bonnet and an apron went over her dress. Her face was sweaty and covered in a mix of flour and spices.
She didn’t seem surprised to see me but went over to greet me nonetheless. “What do ya want?” she asked in a thick Scottish accent. “Are you the new delivery boy?” she continued.
“No miss, I am visiting this town and wanted to ask you some questions.” I replied.
“You can ask me a question if you buy a loaf of bread.” she said.
I handed her a few shillings from my pocket and she gave me a loaf of bread. “So what do ya want to ask?” she said in the same thick accent.

March 16, 2021 - Hiatus note: I will come back to this story! I'm really struggling with it, though. It's been a number of years and I kind of forgot what the original outline was. I still remember the main path, but not any of the details, because I stupidly didn't write an outline. Progress is being made. I'd like a very decent sized buffer before I start posting again. Don't want to get hopes up only to immediately disappoint! ----- Amy Barnes, an aspiring chemical researcher, finds herself dying from cancer. One of her most desperate prayers is answered in a way that she'd never dreamed possible, and she finds herself living a new life as a dungeon. Warning: Violence, morbidity Cover: Taken from here, courtesy of www.pexels.com by photographer @tookapic. Author's Note: I've read some dungeon core stories on here, and they've tickled my fancy. I've thought up a whole story, start to finish, and thought it'd be a blast to put it into words. Other than the violent and morbid aspects, this story is suitable for children. Aside from the vocabulary, that is. I will avoid the temptation to have any cursing, sexuality, or gore. Excessive gore, I suppose - it is a dungeon story, after all. I’ll do a little research from time to time, but this story will not have a great deal of rigor. I’ve made Amy’s knowledge comparable to my own for that reason. There’s a few things she knows more about than I do, and a few things that she knows less about. Unlike me, she doesn’t have access to Google - it’s a non issue for her to be more knowledgeable than me, on occasion :P This story does not use the same magic system that I’ve used in either Sorcery in Boston or A Summoner’s Confession. This one is mostly intention based, and designed to be easier access for people who are more used to the idea of, “It’s magic, therefore it works” kind of thinking. Do note that Amy is, in most senses of the term, overpowered. This goes along with the usual dungeon core stories. She’s not more powerful than other dungeons per se, but she does have knowledge and intelligence that puts them to shame. I thought about doing this in a LitRPG style, but systems take balance, and I wanted this to be pure fun to write. This story was inspired from a few sources. Despite the title, it wasn’t really inspired by Of Mice and Men, though some of the themes match. Rather, I’ve taken inspiration from a few dungeon core novels on Royal Road Legends for the main idea. Many conventions of dungeon core stories have been perverted from the genre, however. I’ve taken my usual science-loving self to town to play around with the powers, and I can only hope you have half as much fun reading this as I have had writing it.
8 89PINAN: Refuge
All Haeok wants is for his sisters to be safe. Under Japanese rule, security and dignity are scarcities in Korea; and with the world caught in precarious flux, change will shadow the fight for his family’s future.Still- He looks to the north, and dares to hope that the soil of an ancestral homeland might harbor their dream of refuge. This fiction starts in 1942 Korea, during the final years of both the Japanese Empire and of WWII. Out of the necessity of conveying the reality of this time and place to the best of my (limited) ability, there WILL be explicit descriptions of traumatic events for characters. Reader discretion is highly advised. That being said, I hope you enjoy!
8 267Epoch: An NPC's Tale
Epoch is a slow-burn LitRPG/Gamelit novel that tells the story of Luke, later named Lucius—a natural inhabitant of the game-like realm of Elyssia where thousands upon thousands of detached, virtually unkillable entities known as the Players were suddenly introduced right after the dusk of the magnificent Age of Heroes. Shortly after the Players arrived, the balance of power in Elyssia instantly shifted. Kingdoms fell, wars were waged, alliances between races were made, and Lucius, after ten years of training in captivity, found himself being used as a pawn in a prophecy that he had no intention to fulfill. With aspirations and desires of his own, Lucius must find a way to cautiously adapt to the drastic changes in the very foundations of the realm after being sent 300 years into a future that was forever altered by the outcome of the war that his captors had lost and the Players won in a victory that resounded throughout the ages, all for a terrible price. Author's Note As an avid fan of the LitRPG genre myself, I wrote this novel with character progression, heavy Gamelit elements, and some degree of world-building in mind. If you like these, please feel free to give this novel a try. Oh, and the MC is also an NPC, in a sense. And wait, isn't this also an isekai story? Well, it's all a bit complicated to explain here. Maybe you should start reading now?
