《The Beautiful Jade》Chapter 16.5 Tai Qiu

Pain fills me as I hold the young girl in my arms. I had messed up. I had let the illusion gain power over me and now Jia Lin was paying the price for my mistake.
“I-I am sorry.” I say, my voice catching as I try to stop myself from crying from the guilt.
Her arms wrap around me, holding herself to me.
I lower my head, my cheek resting against her head. After I’m certain that I’ve completely calmed her qi, I pull back from our embrace.
“I shouldn’t have used my qi like that. I’m sorry Junior Sister.” I say to her, unable to look into her eyes.
“I-it’s alright.” she says, trying to put on a brave face. I look at her eyes to see them red from the pain. “Now I know what happens when a Requiem is forcefully broken.”
I knew the consequences of forcefully breaking a technique like that, there is no excuse for my actions. “It isn’t alright. But thank you for forgiving me.”
Jia Lin stands up, looking up and away from me. To my surprise, she bows to me with none of the hateful emotions I expected.
“Will I be able to return to our lessons tomorrow?” She asks.
“For as long as you’ll have me as your teacher.” I respond. I can’t force her to stay with me after I’ve hurt her, it would be wrong.
To my surprise she smiles at me, showing none of the pain she felt earlier. I miss her next words as she turns around to leave.
I turn my gaze vacantly to the trees.
The blood, the screams, they were too real. How does a young girl of thirteen live with seeing such things every time she plays her music? Even I had felt my qi change with the scene of the battle, flowing with a familiar resonance. It has been a long time since I was truly caught in such bloodshed, but I remember it clearly.

When the illusion had tried to kill me, I acted on instinct, forgetting the magic that I was surrounded by.
I remember her words when I asked her why she didn’t play her music.
“I’m scared of what I will see when I play.”
That was only one technique in a book named after the remembrance of death. What other horrors must she have experienced? Here I am, turning a blind eye to what she goes through, and even causing her more pain.
I failed.
I failed as a-
Music more beautiful than anything I’ve ever heard reaches my ears, drawing me from my thoughts. The notes flow as if an angel is playing. The song speaks of what comes after destruction, the renewal of life. I find myself completely caught in it as I turn my gaze to Jia Lin.
She plays, the music itself bringing beauty to her.
She opens her eyes, meeting mine and holding a depth beyond imagining.
Flowers begin to grow all around us, from the trees, from the ground, and surrounding the portal itself.
The music ends and I quickly wipe away the tears that had come with it.
“Will you formally accept me as your disciple, Master Tai Qiu?” She asks quietly, her eyes not meeting mine.
I recognize the importance of the moment, so I answer her honestly, my qi resonating with my words. “I will.” The words are a promise to her and myself. No matter what happens, I will be there for her. I will protect her with my life. I will guide her to become someone that will never be forgotten.

This story follows Auron, a man who has been plagued with vivid nightmares his entire life. While running away from a beating, a splitting headache causes him to fall to his knees. Once again his nightmares bleed into reality. The next "episode" he has brings him from the scene of his nightmare, to a posionous swamp. To make matters worse his memories from earth are fading, and these nightmares that plagued his childhood, filled with darkness and a red coocoon, are back and worse than ever. As he clings to the only memories he has left, he is forced to fight through a world of brutal blood thirsty monsters, dungeons, and a complex magic system governed by an ancient agreement. First time writing any sort of story. Everything is still a work in progress. As I improve on my writing I will go back and edit parts. Early chapters are subject to change as I grow my ability. I am going to try my best to write this world and improve as I go. My goal is to make my dream come to life through the medium of text. This is why I wanted to post it here. Feel free to comment, and bring constructive criticism. Hope you enjoy! More info (Spoiler warning): only read if you are picky, read a lot, and want to waste no time with a story you may not want read. This book is a litrpg. This means it contains stat tables, and other game elements. (Which you may gloss over if you would like) It is written in a fantasy world, in the style of a progression fantasy. The main character grows in power as the story plays out. My characters are written to my best ability, but you may find them immature. The MC has to adjust to fighting, and killing which he struggles with for a while. His partner is a magical salamander who is a friend and mentor. The world building, monsters, and descriptions are also low tier. (I am working hard to change that!) If you are okay reading something by someone who is just getting started then welcome! I am doing my best, and incrementally improving as I go.

Trial of Champions
It all began with a family trip to an amusement park. How were any of us to expect being transported from Earth to participate in some "Trial of Champions," whatever that was supposed to be? Given only an hour to choose the Classes that would come to define our strengths, we were almost immediately torn away from one another and thrust into a deadly game of survival. It wasn't all bad, though, as terrifying as it could be from time to time. The supernatural and magical powers of the Classes were like something out of an RPG, complete with leveling up by killing monsters and completing so-called "Sub-Trials." And despite the juicy Experience to be gained from killing other Champion Contestants, not all of the participants were bloodthirsty murderers; some could be allied with, or even befriended. Even if it seemed like everyone who had been chosen for this Trial, no matter what universe they came from, was at least a little bit crazy. I would survive this till the end, and I'd make sure that my siblings and parents did as well, no matter how many times we were separated from one another. No matter how long it took. No matter what I had to do. --- A first-person litRPG incorporating classes inspired by D&D and other sources. If you like blue boxes but don't need to have huge lists of numbers to scratch your itch, you should be satisfied on that front. Each chapter is, in my word processing document, seven pages long (approximately 3300-3900 words). The Traumatizing Content warning is there because of discussions of certain topics. Nothing that I think deserves the warning actually happens in the story.
