《A Job for a Wendigo》Moving Forward

News of Jodi Cartwright aka Chimera’s arrest was such a second thought they sandwich the article in between two ads for fancy jumpsuits for Gremlins. That didn’t stop Sylvia from sending the clipping out to be framed. She was currently wading in the ocean with her Kirin walking next to her. After the events of the summer, she had decided to name him, Stormrider.
The other two kirin of their small herd was not too far away frockling in the ocean with Tide Breaker. Since arriving at the island he hadn’t felt the need to disguise his true form anymore. Yrsa had chosen the more comfortable option of sitting inside next to the circular fan. Sitting on the floor she was picking through the recovered articles from her grandparent’s RV. The pile of unsalvageable was growing at an alarming rate. So were her only other pair of shoes. Smoothing out some of the paper money that got wet she heard Sylvia squeal with delight from the shore.
Curious, Yrsa looked up to see Sylvia waving wildly at the passing ferry drifting by. The cyclops gave a half-hearted wave back as he made his wave to the next island. He made a shape in the air before pointing back to the docks further down the island. The selkie gave an even louder screech of joy as she tore up the beach.
“Yrsa! Get the keys. We need to pick up the mail.” She cried out. Moving to the side Yrsa allowed her partner to dash by.
“Don’t slip.” Ordered Yrsa getting up. Their floors were made of polished wood which was easier to get sand off but was just as easy to slip on. Yrsa liked that she could forgo shoes since she didn’t have to worry about her nails getting caught in the carpet. In a whirl of excitement, both girls were driving down the unpaved road towards the only pier on the island.

It was nearing Samhain though the island looked as an idealistic daydream as ever. One song from Empresses later they were parking right where the dirt road met the pier.
Once upon a time, the islands were used for tourism. After the Atlantis Group took control back from the mainland the remaining buildings were left to rot. The only building the group kept up on was the souvenir shop attached to the pier. Using that as their office it was nice to have a cooler they could keep their drinks/lunches in. Even though the mailman had a key he would just open the window to slip in the letters. After a few days, Yrsa got a basket to catch the letters. She even put a pillow in it just in case something fragile might’ve been dropped off.
Sylvia let herself in rushing over to the box to pull out the brown paper wrapped frame. Turning on the light Yrsa maneuvered around the crouching girl. Looks like the mail carrier decided not to drop the mail through the window today.
“This is going to look so good in our living room!”
“Uh-huh.” Yrsa supplied checking on the rest of the mail. An insurance statement. An official letter from the main island. What caught her focus was a handwritten letter from the Windstrider Ranch. She felt a pang of guilt since she didn’t recognize if it was from one of her parents or Orion’s handwriting. Setting back down the rest of the mail she ripped open the letter.
Dear Yrsa,
We hope this letter finds you well. Your father and I are in good health. Your brother is entering his prized elk to the Samhain Festival this year. If your schedule permits it we would like to invite you to the End of Year Feast. Send your reply ASAP.

“Could’ve saved herself some postage if she wrote that on a postcard.” Commented Sylvia from Yrsa’s elbow.
“Reading someone else’s mail is a crime you know?” Yrsa said stuffing the letter back into its envelope.
“Oh yeah. So anyway, here are your orders from Konani.” The selkie handed her annoyed wendigo friend the opened letter. Huffing Yrsa snatched the letter from Sylvia, careful not to scratch the other girl.
“Looks like we’re headed to Puma Parks. Hey maybe if we get done early we can head to your parent’s place. Bring the kelpie to show them what you are capable of.” Sylvia leaned against Yrsa with a bright smile.
“Ah. There it is.” Pointed the selkie from her position on Yrsa’s elbow.
“Where's what?”
“You’re smiling.” She said pointing her finger at Yrsa’s face.
“You know I can’t smile.”
“You smile with your eyes.” Syliva sang before making her way back to the truck with a spring in her step. Yrsa followed after reading while walking.
“Says here to report at six tonight. Considering it is four now we need to be packing thirty minutes ago.” Said Yrsa trying to change the subject.
“Oh, that fine. Besides not like you have a lot to pack.” The second those words left her mouth Sylvia's smile fell.
Before the smaller girl could stumble over herself apologizing Yrsa reached a claw out to poke her in the chest. To her surprise, she felt something hard on the normally soft material.
“What in the-”
Sylvia reached up to touch the spot.
“Oh. My button is coming in.” She half shouted bolting to the passenger side mirror to look in the small mirror. Giving a small chuckle Yrsa decided she was going to take Sylvia with her to meet her parents. Having someone that energetic around the ranch would be very amusing. For now, though, they had work to do.
Soon the island would have herds of kelpies before too long. It was nice there was a job just for Yrsa.
“You're smiling again.” Pointed out Sylvia still searching for her button in the pelt.
“Shut up and buckle up. We got a job to do.”
Syliva gave a nod as they took off towards their next adventure.

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)

The Infinite Labyrinth
(Story complete - Book 1 "Shanghaied", 2 "Shortcuts", 3 "Secrets" and 4 "Sanctions") It is the 19th century, and war smoulders between England and France. Any hope for a quick end to Napoleon's rampage across Europe ended when the Great Gates opened in 1800. For a fortunate few, the strange world of the Infinite Labyrinth offers opportunities, strange descriptors popping in their minds, informing them of growth, and status beyond that of a mere mortal. The materials and power crystal they bring back foster a new age, both military and civilian. Aether-powered Skyships prowl the skies, as all the great nations blessed by the Gates try to turn the blessings of the Labyrinth into immediate advantages. But for Jonas, an apprentice leatherworker, his friend Ira, and so many Londoners, the fabled ones that walk the Labyrinth are distant heroes, seen from afar. They fell short when their Potential was measured, and they fill their mundane lives with distant dreams. One man wants to break the stalemate. The Tyrant of the Dominion of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, has a plan. Eighteen years after the world changed, he will force it to change again. And when civilians are caught in the fallout, the unthinkable happens. Six people, unqualified, forbidden to ever enter the Labyrinth, find themselves stranded in a distant zone, forcefully turned into Professionals. They know little of what that means, but they have to figure out the rules that are now their lot, for they have little hope to escape their predicament otherwise. They need to understand what the descriptors in their minds mean, what each of the strange piece of gear waiting in treasure chests behind terrible guardians can bring them. They have to become Professionals on their own and rejoin the Empire. They will figure out their new lives one way or another. But will there be an Empire waiting for them when the Gates re-open? Caught in a clash of empires and high tiers, they will do what little they can. They will step up and do their best. One way or another. The Infinite Labyrinth is a slice-of-life litRPG adventure set in a real historical setting. It's a hard, crunchy litrpg. Expect blue boxes everywhere, and the system itself is very mathy. It started life as a serial. I prepared some proper worldbuilding, with enough details and background for lots of different potential story arcs, but as I wrote, I realized the main story needs to have a definitive end. So, there are four books in total, for a bit under 1500 pages, plus additional side stories, and even maybe a sequel one day. The Gore tag was added as a precaution because there are a few scenes with some light gore.
