《A Beautiful Woman of Science and Other Absurdities》Epilogue

FOUR YEARS LATER
Four years passed since the destruction of the Order of One Justice’s research Transportal which exploded in a horrific fashion from the side of the cliff on the South-Eastern side of the island of Formose.
Marielle, now nineteen years old, was still a teenager in years, but much more mature in the mind. She was less starry-eyed and less emotional as she entered young adulthood. She sat in a thin, upholstered chair in her living room at home. The architecture of her home was ultra-minimalist and modern-looking almost resembling a modern art museum. The wall behind her was one giant display screen which she decorated with frameless pictures of her family and friends. Of course, pictures of her twin sister Anaelle were displayed, along with several pictures of Viviane, Kylian, Luc and her father Leandre Renard. Conspicuous in all this was one special, old-fashioned photo mounted in a real frame propped up on an end table which showed her mother Elise in a yellow dress along with Anaelle and Marielle who were both no more than three years old.
“It’s been four years since my adventurous days of the past with my sister Anaelle. Since I’m sure you’re dying to know, let me tell you what has happened since we escaped from the Order of One Justice.
“After we were all rescued and returned to the UEN, that’s when Anaelle and I were told by Viviane that the infant boy she carried on her arm was our father who reverted back 39 years to become a one-year old child. At first, we couldn’t believe it! But then, we were sort of happy that he was alive. Still, the one-year old boy was so adorable that, even though we knew he was our father, we just accepted it as his fate. The fact that he didn’t die gave us hope that one day, we could become re-acquainted with him again.

“Having no other family to take him in, Viviane ‘adopted’ the one-year old boy and has been raising him as her own ever since. She changed his name to René Fox. Now five, René learned to read at age two and is already showing a keen interest in science and mathematics. No surprise there.
“Once the UEN government learned of all the secrets my father hid from them, they swore us all to secrecy. The public was never told the truth about what happened. The official story was that Dr. Renard was kidnapped by the Order of One Justice, and he was killed in the explosion of the Transportal in the cliff. However, because of our real story, the leaders of the Ruling Party have changed their policy of embargoing technology and they are now trying to gradually introduce some of the UEN’s advanced technologies to the rest of the world to benefit all people around the globe in the name of peace.
“Aveline continues to sing and entertain. She and Bastian still haven’t gotten married yet but say they will someday in the future. We are all invited to their wedding when it happens, of course! Anaelle and I are so shook that we’ll be there!
“Since my father had not chosen a proper successor, Kylian, who knew all the secrets, was promoted to Director of the National Laboratory. He’s still working on improving the technology of teleportation.
“Moyenne still works at the National Laboratory. She doesn’t fully accept Kylian as her boss, so she will sometimes cause trouble for him.
“Viviane returned to her life as supermodel. Are you surprised to hear that? She says she wants to work in a glamourous career that values and pays women much more than men while she’s still young enough to do it. Besides, she has not completely turned her back on physics research and mathematics. Not long after we were rescued and things settled down, she and Kylian got engaged! They married about a year later. So Viviane comes back home after work to physics, math and teleportation every evening! I think Kylian likes telling everyone he meets that he married a supermodel.

“What about Luc, you ask? Well, once things got back to normal, Luc insisted that he be put back on High School guard duty. He felt it was the most important job to have after all and he’s no longer embarrassed to be watching over a bunch of High School students. Case Carswell who escaped before the explosion hasn’t been heard from since, although no one is taking that for granted. Anaelle and I graduated from High School last year and we are now enrolled at the University of the UEN at Capital City, right here alongside the National Laboratory. We’re both following in our mother’s footsteps and majoring in Physics. Anaelle is still single and hoping to find the love of her life. Me, on the other hand, I’ve been happily married to Luc Coquin for about a year. We’re expecting our first child sometime next spring.
“After all, my dream is to be a good mother to my own child, the mother I never had growing up.
“See you later! Bye-bye!”

Killing Tree
When your day goes to hell and you find yourself kidnapped, strung up from a magical tree, and left to bleed out, what do you do next? Asking for a friend. Fortunately, Riordan Kincaid is a tough, gives-no-fucks honey badger shifter. Unfortunately, now that he's survived the first attempt, a death mage and their cult are determined to finish the job by whatever means necessary, pursuing Riordan across the wilds of rural Michigan. Ghosts and spirits are outside of his specialty, and heaven help him if he has to cast actual spells, but Riordan isn't going to make this easy on his enemies. Even if that means breaking his long exile, turning to the local shifter community for help, and dealing with a bureaucratic department of mages. And don't even get him started on getting licked by a damn spirit bear. Now he just needs to figure out what will kill him first: his enemies, his past, or his own attempts at using magic? Or will Riordan beat the odds and prove that honey badgers really are that hard to kill? If so, what will he do with a life once hung upon a tree that's more than a tree? After the Long Burn
After the longest exodus in human history, a terrible accident threatens to turn the salvation of humanity into its most desperate struggle for survival. From the ashes of calamity rises a new human story. A frustrated scientist dedicates her life to recreating the Earth in alien soil, while another is gunned down for his sin and sets off a chain of events culminating in a desperate escape across the void for an opportunity at redemption. Around a distant moon a deep space miner stumbles onto a secret, the key to which lies buried inside his own tortured mind. After the Long Burn is an anthology of short science fiction stories set in the distant Ionad System. Author's Note: I thought I might try something a little different with this story. Rather than one story, it is six stories of varying length, each taking a slightly different perspective to tell a larger story. Some are more actioney, others more cerebral but I hope there will be something for everyone. Stories over 7000 words, with the exception of the titular After the Long Burn, will be published in two parts. I anticipate an upload schedule of one part every other day.

That Scottish Play
This is a very silly and cringey parody of Shakespeare's Macbeth. The play format will be kept consistent throughout. Unless you enjoy cringing so hard you experience physical pain, I'd suggest avoiding this work. However, as the level of cringe is only slightly less than that of the office, any fans of that show may enjoy this work. (I believe, as a parody, this work is protected from copyright by fair use, additionally, Shakespeare is in the public domain so it doesn't fall under copyright in the first place. If I'm wrong please let me know)
